metro station and popular hiker-biker trail. freddie gray death puts baltimore's mayor in the national spotlight. now she is making a surprising decision about her political future. first at 4:00 a shooting inside union station today. our cameras are there as a man shot by a security guard gets wheeled out. >> yeah, we know it all started with someone getting stabbed in a building next door, then a chase on foot into the food court where so many workers grab lunch. >> we broke in on air and sent out text alerts because of where this happened today. now, chris gordon is able to answer why that guard pulled the trigger. >> reporter: police say that fears are hint eheightened toda because it is the anniversary of the september 11th attack. imagine the reaction at 12:15, 12:45 this afternoon when a shot rang out inside union station. this is the suspect who was shot after a domestic dispute in

which he reportedly stabbed a woman and tlaeptd security guard with his knife. it began about 12:45 this afternoon. a source close to the investigation tells news4 it began at kaiser permanente on second street northeast near the entrance to union station. man and woman were arguing. the woman told the guard that she had a protective order against the man. he then stabbed her and fled, running into union station. an armed contract guard working with a securities and exchange commission chased the man to the mcdonald's restaurant near the amtrak gates. commander jeff brown of the metropolitan police department picks up the story. >> the armed security officer gave chase to the individual, demanding that he stop and drop the weapon. the suspect turned on the officer, lunged at him with the weapon. the armed officer fired one round from his revolver, striking the suspect one time in the side. both individuals, the male and

the female have been transported to area hospitals with what we believe are non-life-threatening injuries. >> reporter: the station was filled with travelers at the time. a few people heard the shot and yelled. police say some people self-evacuated. others sheltered in place. >> we just ran out the door with everybody else. the people just started thundering behind us. it was scary. being 9/11, it was absolutely terrifying. >> reporter: ahead, was this situation handled correctly? should a shot have been fired inside union station? the answer's coming up on news4 at 5:00. that is the latest in northeast, chris gordon, news4, back to you. at the pentagon, defense secretary ash carter laid a wreath in honor of those killed between flight 77 struck the building. during brief remarks, carter shared the very private way he chooses to remember victims.

at the white house, the president and first lady and white house staff held a moment of silence at exactly 8:46 a.m. they marked the exact moment the first plane hit the north tower of the world trade center. a lot of groups are marking this anniversary, the attack on america, by performing public service projects. this morning at the washington monument, veterans and public school children gathered to create books, veterans told their stories of service and the young authors will turn those into books to be given as gifts to children of military families. police are warning women to stay alert after a string of attempted sex assaults. >> all of these victims were on a popular trail near a metro station in prince george's county. news4's darcy spencer is live in high yachtsville where police are trying to find out if these cases are connected. darcy? >> reporter: this is something women need to know about and take seriously. two of these attempted schedule assaults happened near the west hyattsville metro stay, the

metro station right behind me. now the latest attack happened just yesterday morning after the 7:00 in the morning at macgruder park along the northwest branch trail n each of these three cases, the attacker grabs the victim and tries to drag her into a wooded area. each case, the woman is able to get away. now, police are warning women who walk or exercise in these very popular areas to be aware of their surroundings. we don't want you running by yourselves, don't put the headphones in, listening to music, caray cell phone, maybe carry a whistle, use the trail during lighted hours and maybe let a family member know when you're leaving and where you expect to be and use caution. >> reporter: coming up on news4 at 5:00, i will tell you what each victim did that stopped the attacker and made him runaway. back to you.

that forecast has a couple of different facets to it, a chance of storms tomorrow, some could have locally heavy downpours and two -- >> temperatures, we will take a plummet the next few days, don't think we are done with summer either. good point. we are going to see temperatures going to be much cooler this weekend. but right now, a very, very nice afternoon. low humidity, 87 in d.c. 82 in manassas. only 84 back toward win chaernsd 79 toward annapolis again. we have been talking about the rain chance for the weekend, here is what we are looking at, a storm system to the west, another cold front make its way our way. we do have a good chance for rain during the day tomorrow if you have weekend plans, going to have your hour by hour forecast coming up. a couple things to think about here for the headlines, tracking storms on saturday, cool weather on sunday and then, the coolest temperatures since may. we will talk about that coming up in a minute.

i'm scott macfarlane at the live desk, potential breaking news out of arizona related to the recent highway shootings a person of interest now being questioned by police officers there after those officers converged on a convenience store late today. at least 11 vehicles have been hit by bullets recently and most of those shootings happening along the very populace interstate 10 corridor. it goes right through arizona from tucson through phoenix all the way to los angeles. echoes of the beltway snipers, a populace area and cars being targeted with seemingly random bullets a person of interest being questioned, more information to come. for now at the live desk, scott macfarlane. >> thanks, scott. the mayor of baltimore made a stunning announcement today. she is abandoning her re-election bid five months after freddie gray's death sparked riots that rocked the city the six police officers charged in connection with gray's arrest and death will go to trial this yeared. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake says she wants to focus on moving the city forward. she disputed a reporter's suggestion that quitting now

a fisherman off the coast of san diego had a once in a lifetime experience, a visit from killer whales much ben lewis was out fishing on a boat with friends when the killer whales came up to them. he captured the whales swimming around the boat, even jumping and seeming like they were chasing after the boat. the boaters seemed amazed, almost speechless, about the close encounter. wow. an area family makes it their mission to honor the fredericksburg police department. they dropped off 20 handmade cards to the local precinct just to remind the police officers that they are supported and valued and appreciated. a few of the officers read the cards on camera. >> and says heroes don't wear capes, they wear basketballs. thank you for what you do every day for our community and it came from ms. shields and it is very sweet that they took the

the redskins kick off their season less than 48 hours. will rg3 be ready if needed? we have got an answer. he has been looking a lot like a candidate lately but less than four months since joe biden lost his son, beau. what he is saying whether he will jump into the presidential race. union station is open again following a chaotic scene that police say started with a stabbing and ended with a shooting. investigators say a man stabbed a woman in a domestic dispute outside the station then a contract security guard chased the suspect into union station and shot him. we will have more on the scary moment there is from visitors and passengers on this september 11th coming up in a few minutes. residents are on alert tonight as fairfax county police search for a man who assaulted someone in annandale a woman says man grabbed her from behind last night while she was walking on east more land road. she says he pushed her to the ground before running away. the victim's okay but the man is

still out there. for the fifth straight year, a muslim organization is holding blood drives across the country to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11. one of the blood drives took place at the ray burn house office building on capitol hill. several members of congress and their staff rolled up their sleeves and made ñmtodonations. the so-called muslims for life campaign started five years ago. the group says it is an effort to not only honor 9/11 victims but also to serve as a reminder that islam promotes peace. >> we are giving our blood to give life, to help people survive and recover from their troubles and we don't want to take people's life. >> so far the campaign has collected 40,000 pints of blood that have impacted an estimated 100,000 lives. we have got sunshine across the area right now. of course, our temperatures topping out into the 80s, but are you ready for some late

september-type weather? always flip those numbers around for this upcoming weekend, early part of next week. northerly wind now and again some sunshine, storm team4 radar showing just how dry is, as this scan comes across the area. but tomorrow, we are talking about some thunderstorms that will be firing, during the afternoon hours, think between noon and four, maybe as late as 5 p.m. there is the potential for strong, maybe even a few severe thunderstorms, our main threat, seeing high winds, some pockets of moderate to maybe heavy rain down through southern maryland, areas of the northern neck, south of d.c., can't even rule out a little bit of hail coming to the area. but for sunday, sunday will be perfect football weather. maybe some clouds start the day but i think more and more sunshine as we go through the day. when i say perfect football weather, well, washington takes on the dolphins, breezy, 75, 76, and falling through the late afternoon, so, take something to cover your arms. yeah, a little bit chilly. we will have a look at your seven-day forecast in a few.

i'm dave johnson, he may not be the starter but robert griffin iii can actually take the field if called upon this weekend. redskins president bruce allen announced on wtop that griffin has been cleared to play from the concussion he suffered in the second preseason game. now, griffin has been practicing this week and the redskins already had a verbal confirmation of that clearance to play but head coach jay gruden was waiting for that written documentation which the team received last night. gruden said this afternoon, griffin is probable for sunday's game but the coach does not intend to announce whether rg3 will be the backup or third-string quarterback until sunday. as for the starter, kirk cousins, well, jason pugh goes one-on-one with him on news4 at 5:00. he has got a arm and some pipes. coming up at 5:00. >> looking forward to it thanks, dave. five former members of uva swim team are responding to a hazing lawsuit filed by a former teammate. they are asking a judge to throw the case out before it goes to trial next year.

another swimmer has accused them of violently hazing him and other teammates, including verbal threats and sexual contact. all five deny the charges. the alleged hazing happened two years ago. the swimmer who filed the lawsuit has transferred to another school. now to the presidential race where we are seeing some changes in the crowded republican field and growing speculation about whether vice president joe biden will join the race as hillary clinton's popularity gives. evan lawrence is tracking this on capitol hill. >> reporter: vice president joe biden in new york to honor the victims of 9/11 attacks. >> i know a long time, it doesn't go away. >> reporter: as speculation grows about a possible run for president, biden has gained in the polls. on the colbert show last night, biden talked candidly about what it takes to run. >> they can look at folks out there and say, i promise you, you have my whole heart, my whole soul, my energy and my passion to do this. and -- and i would be lying if i

overnight temperatures. veronica has more on that coming up. thanks, doug. a few minutes ago, we showed you the video of that new york city police officer tackling former tennis star james blake in a case of mistaken identity. we are also learning today that officer has a history of allegations of excessive force. officer james france cat torre has been named in two federal civil rights lawsuits, that's him you see there tackling blake outside the hotel. these cases involve men who claimed they were wasn't, pepper sprayed and falsely arrested. last year, an investigation found the officer had five complaints against him in a seven-month period back in 2013. right now, he is on desk duty. a massive wildfire in california more than doubles in size. now, close to 32,000 acres, hot weather, steep terrain and extremely dry brush contributed to the fire's massive growth. the blaze is only about 10% contained now and continues to threaten homes and structures in

killed in the september 11th terror attacks. 14 years ago, news4's megan mcgrath saw the fireball in the sky right after american airlines flight 77 slammed into the pentagon. >> yeah, today, she came back to see an iconic moment from those early days this has become sort of a touchstone. >> reporter: just after sun up, a giant american flag was unfurled from the roof of the pentagon, just as it was for the very first time the day after the attack 14 years ago. as a single generation older than like the world wars, there hasn't been anything -- hasn't been anything other than pearl harbor that's really defined a generation. >> reporter: josh bair and richard green could see the flag as they walked to their offices inside the pentagon this morning. >> 14 years later. >> reporter: they were just kids when the building was hit. josh in michigan, richard in massachusetts, but the experience shaped the course of their lives. each deciding to join the navy and serve their country. >> everything i've done as a

child up until now was because of 9/11. so, um, a lot of us that are in the service this defined a lot of what we do and what we've done. so, we try to take a moment while we are here in work, for all of us that are active duty. >> it's crazy to think that such a monumental event in our nation's history happened in the building we are going go work in today. and every day. but today is always special. >> for sure, it is solemn and sad, but this a weird way, i'm proud. its a he is a proud feeling to walk in and see the flag there this morning and every morning. >> reporter: the unfurling of the flag at the pentagon has back 9/11 tradition a symbol of american resolve and pride. so much so that gene boone and her mother came to see it happen in person. her arlington middle school was placed on lockdown during the attack. seeing the flag lowered was -- >> emotion a.m. you know, it's sad, but, you know, i think -- i think people are recovering well. >> reporter: attack happened 14

years ago, but there's one thing we have heard here over and over again today and that is never forget, no matter how much time passes. from the pentagon, megan mcgrath, news4. news for your health that could impact millions with high blood pressure a major study found that lowering the systolic reading, the top number to 120, instead of the previous go of 140 dramatically cut of number of heart attacks and strokes. deaths were cut by 25%. the national institutes of health funded the study. the information from -- is from 10,000 men and women of various races across the country. starting tomorrow, registered hunters can bring out their bows and ar trees hunt deer in fairfax county. the deer management archery program starts saturday and runs for five months. it is the main way of reducing the white tail deer population in the county. virginia has been tracking hunter safety for more than 50 years and has never had an injury related to archery.

for some fairfax county students, missing the first day of classes haspmñ created a scheduling mess they are still trying to clean up. we spoke with the mom of one centerville high schooler. she says she excuse herd son to miss the first day of school so that he could go on a college visit, but when he returned to classes the second day he was told he was no longer in the system and his class schedule was gone. >> i did call him in absent and followed all the protocol and got a message on the phone later in the day that he would have to come in and be reactivated, which i was confused about. >> reporter: so we went to the school system on this matter. turns out he wasn't the only student affected. we will tell you what they are doing about it and how they said it started in the first place. in centreville, david culver, news4. virginia spends big bucks to replace license plates that batter image of the confederate flag. >> now we know what happens if

right now the virginia dmv is mailing new license flights hundreds of drivers. the state is spending close to $8,000 to replace tags that feature the confederate flag. and reporter brent sullivan looked into what happens if you don't comply. >> reporter: it is a controversy surrounding two tags, one of which the governor is requiring be removed from all vehicles. the second, a replacement that

we are now getting a good first look at. when suspected shooter dylann roof was spotted posing with a confederate flag following the deaths of nine black church members in south carolina, it ignited rage across the nation, even in virginia, leaving governor terry mcauliffe to call for removal of the flag from state-issued license plates. i say they have hijacked the flag for their own nefarious purposes and that shouldn't be. >> reporter: dexter oliver is a member of sops of confederate veterans and takes issue with the new tag virginia just created for confederate supporters. >> i don't approve of them taking our emblem off which has the battle flag. >> reporter: but 1600 of them are headed to the mailboxes of virginia yaps who purchased the old plate. they are now being asked to replace it right away. >> we have enclosed a postage-paid envelope, we will just ask them to mail the old plates back us to so we can recycle them. >> reporter: brandy brew bake we
