show you video first on 4. it shows the concern and fear that people had inside union station moments after a gunshot rang out. now, we were in there and the -- what we are about to show you is metro video that was given to us earlier this afternoon and you will see people trying to get out of union station and into the metro station. here it is. crowds of people flee union station after a shot is fired. this metro surveillance video obtained by news4 shows people desperately seeking safety. on the anniversary of 9/11 was the shooting of a suspect by a armed security guard justified? >> in my opinion, absolutely. this is the way things are supposed to go. we are supposed to respond like this, what we ask citizens to do

as far as remaining calm, shelter in place, we actually have several witnesses who observed the offense and gave us some very pertinent information. >> reporter: this is the suspect who was shot after a domestic dispute in which he reportedly stabbed a woman and threatened a security guard with his knife. it happened at 12:45 this afternoon. a source close to the investigation tells news4 it began at kaiser permanente on second street northeast near the entrance to union station. the man and woman were arguing. the woman told the guard that she had a protective order against the man. he then stabbed her and fled, running into union station. an armed contract guard working with the securities and exchange commission chased the man to the mcdonald's restaurant near the amtrak gates. police say the suspect lunged at the guard, trying to stab him the guard shot once, hitting the suspect in the side. that's when people inside union station scattered. >> everybody came running by me,

>> 14 years on, still a very, very painful day for the families. a lot of people spent a few minutes at the pentagon today and some of them shared their feelings with us. some of them were outside at is up rise for the unfurling of an american flag over the side of the building. it's an echo of the display we saw the day after that attack 14 years ago. a teacher whose school in arlington went on lockdown after flight 77 hit the pentagon brought her mother along to reflect. >> you know, it's sad. but you know, i think -- i think people are recovering well. >> 184 people died when that plane hit the pentagon. if you want to see more photos of some of the ceremonies both here and around the nation, just need our nbc washington app and search 9/11. jim? get used to it, folks.

>> there's a potential for some nasty weather coming in on us this weekend. chief meteorologist doug kammerer is tracking it. what does the radar show right now, doug? >> the radar shows we have some storms well back toward the west, nothing around our area right now as a matter of fact, it's beautiful conditions on our friday, really some great weather. take a look at the numbers out there, 85 degrees. look at what we are dealing with currently, 86 in gaithersburg, 80, culpepper. going to be a great evening but look what's happening this weekend. we have got this frontal boundary making its way our watch the front will move toward the region and give us a very good chance of rain and thunderstorm during the day tomorrow. some things i'm tracking here, headlines, tracking storms for your saturday, cool weather for sunday and not just cool weather, but the coolest temperatures since midmay. we will talk much more about those numbers in the seven-day forecast at 5:15. >> doug, thank you. now to frightening moments for two women attacked at their front doors. within an hour, police quickly

swooped in and made an arrest, but news of the attacks just a few blocks apart surprising women north of old town and alexandria now. news4's mark segraves join us at one of those location. mark? >> reporter: jim, behind me is north patrick street. this apartment building in the middle of the 900 block is where the first victim was attacked. police say within the course of an hour, two women in this same neighborhood were attacked. >> in the first case, he followed a woman into her apartment building. >> reporter: first attack happened about 9:00 last night in this apartment complex off north patrick street. a woman was coming into the building and even though it's a secure building and you need a key to get in, police say the suspect followed her right behind, even followed her on to the elevator and right up to her apartment door. as with the woman tried to go into her apartment, the suspect attacked her and tried to force his way inside. she defended herself and screamed for help and that's went suspect fled.

less than an hour later, police say that same suspect was here on north fayette street just a few blocks away where he atta attacked a second woman in the same manner as she was trying to get into her home. he tried to force his way in. this neighbor, who didn't want to talk on camera, said there typically isn't this type of crime in her neighborhood. >> i'm actually really shocked. >> pretty brazen attack, he attacked two women within the course of an hour. >> reporter: police arrested a 34-year-old homeless man. he is being held without bond, charged with two counts of attempted abduction. coming up at 6:00, you will hear from police on why they say being polite could actually make you more likely to be a victim of crime. pat, back to you. two of the 19 metro rail works sickened in the january smoke incident have yet to return to work.

information obtained by news4 and the public records request show all 19 suffered respiratory problems because of the incident at lan fant plaza. one is still off the job on worker's comp. another has gone back to light duty but not become full time. coming up on news4 at 6:00, more on how on the metro workers are hurt on the job and what's leading this their injuries. just a couple hours, friends will gather in prince george's county to remember the parents of three young children who died in that crash over labor day weekend. the candle light vigil is planned at randal elementary in clinton for delonta toby and his wife, chalet ya. the couple died driving to the store when police say an suv crossed the center line and struck them. that driver has not been charged. friends of the tobys set up a gofundme page to help support the couple's children and we posted a link in our nbc washington app. a warning for women after at least three attempted sex

assaults near a popular trail in prince george's county. many people use the trail to get to the west hyattsville metro station. news4's darcy spencer joins us live to tell us how the women stopped the attacker. darcy? >> reporter: pat, as you said, two of these attempted sexual assaults happened near the west height i can'tsville metro station. that's the station right behind me. one of the attacks happened right here along this path. now, police tell me the women were able to stop the attacker by screaming. this popular cut through between macgruder park and the northwest branch trail in hyattsville, the scene of an attempted sexual assault. about 7:15 thursday morning, the attacker tried grabbing drank a woman walking into this area into the woods. >> walking, biking, walking your dogs on weekends a ton of people right here. i'm surprised about those, concerning, definitely. >> reporter: police believe the attack could be connected to two other attempted sexual assaults that happened near the west

hyattsville metro station over the last three weeks. one happened here where people walked to and from the metro and here, another shortcut from the station to surrounding neighborhoods. >> what do you think about a guy grabbing women and pulling them into the woods like that? >> they have better to do. that's just it, nothing better to do. they pray on people that can't help themselves. >> reporter: in each of the attacks, the victim was able to let out a scream that drew attention. people came to her rescue and that forced the guy to stop and runaway. but police are concerned this man could strike again. he has attacked women after midnight and in the morning. so far, he has not been armed. police are asking women to take precaution. >> i'm trying to make sure there are people around when i walk. i'm glancing around to make sure there are people. i have my dog with me.

a scheduling mess for some fairfax students who missed the first day of school a new computer system briefly removed their records. >> and some cases, deleted their class schedules. northern virginia reporter david culver questioned the school system today on the apparent glitch. >> reporter: you havesly, tuesday was back to school in fairfax county, that wasn't the first day of school for every student. >> we wanted to make sure he had experience of what college in at a big school was like. >> reporter: linda, who didn't want us to use her last name excuse herd son from classes so

the high school senior could make a college visit instead. >> a straight a student, we decided the first day of school would be okay for him to miss. >> reporter: after that college visit, linda's son, a senior here at centerville high school, showed back up at school on the second day of classes, only to be told he wasn't in the system and his class schedule was gone. linda says school counselors plied started looking into the issue. they gave her son a temporary class schedule but warn it hed could take some time to fix. when you start ap classes, you have assignments right away. when he came home, could not see some of his teachers' assignments because he was no longer in their system. >> reporter: linda logged on to the county's new student information system or sis it appeared her son was no longer enrolled. we took her concern to fairfax county public schools n a statement, they told us, in part --

the school system doesn't have an exact number of students affected but acknowledge it is not just at one school and stresses schedules are not permanently lost and students are not disenrolled. had we known, we probably would have adjusted plans, but this took us by surprise. >> reporter: at 6:00, the problem goes beyond fairfax county. we will show you where else students rim pacted. in centerville, david culver, news4. in news for your health now possible new guidelines that could impact you and millions of adult with high blood pressure, doreen gentzler with details on a major new study that could be potentially lifesaving. doreen? >> indeed, pat. the bottom line for this study, lowering your systolic blood pressure more than previously recommended could have major life benefits, even life-saving benefits. when you get a blood pressure reading at the doctor's office, systolic is the number on the top of the reading. researchers from this study

sponsored by the national heart, lung and blood institute say adults over 50 should aim to get that top number down to 120 rather than the previous recommendation of 140. they say that lowering it to that point cut the number of heart attacks, cut the number of strokes and heart failures by a third and deaths went down by 25%. patients in the study lowered their number with an average of three medications. >> with one in three people in our country with hypertension, a lot of them fall in the category of patients that we studied over able 50 with hypertension and at least one cardiovascular risk factor. >> as this physician just mentioned, the study is not include and does not apply anyone under the able of 50 or to people who have had a stroke or been diagnosed with diabetes. researchers found no obvious negative side affects from patients in the study but say they are looking into how a dramatic drop in blood pressure

could impact memory and kidney function. as always, everyone is different and you should always check with the doctor about the best way to handle your own blood pressure levels, but this is a significant study sponsored by the nih, not by somebody who manufacturers blood pressure medication. and they stopped the study more than a year early because the rules were so dramatic. jim? >> important information, doreen. thanks so much. robert griffin iii has been cleared to play the redskins have received the written confirmation now they have been waiting for, rg3 listed as probable for this weekend. what remains to be seen is if griffin will be the backup to kirk cousins or third-string quarterback behind colt mccoy. coach jay gruden says he will not that announcement until sunday. robert griffin iii has been practicing all week in non-contact drills. kirk cousins starts as quarterback, as we know sunday against the dolphins, before the

big surprise for some commuters who use a popular park and ride in woodbridge. they returned to their cars after work to find them vandalized. >> we are not talking about the usual broken windows. northern virginia bureau chief, julie carey, joins us live from the horner road commuter lot to explain just what they were doing. julie? >> reporter: well, imagine this you're headed home after a long day at work, you get to the commuter lot, the home stretch and then you realize, you're not going any were because all of your tires are gone. not just one car. not two cars. but four different cars in this section of the corner road commuter lot were hit by tire thieves on wednesday. michael james noticed one when

he stepped off a commuter bus from d.c. >> as i was approaching my truck, i saw the car on blocks and i didn't think much of it just, oh, somebody might have had an issue but then as i looked closer, i saw one tire, two tire, okay, all four tires are gone. >> reporter: james looked around and more surprised to spot two more cars missing tires. his wife called 191. >> no one wants to deal with that you worked all day commuting and come home to see that yeah. >> reporter: this man parks his jeep here every day and had heard about the vandalism until we told him. >> it's scary, but just depends on if you lock your stuff up. >> reporter: by that he means lock your tires up. his are worth $250 each, sew has hub locks behind each one. >> can't really see it, it is on the backside but makes it were you can't pull, so you actually is to go in and have special tool does it. >> reporter: ward locks can ward off thieves. jamesment ises who ever did this didn't work alone. >> this had to be a crew, at least two or three people. >> reporter: and power tools? >> definitely.

definitely. >> reporter: james and other commuters put up warnings on media. police patrol this lot but didn't see the thieves. as we talk to $commuters here this afternoon, we learned this isn't the first time this has happened. back on may 28th, three cars hit in different parts of the commuter lot. i talked to one of the families who had their vehicle vandalized they said one of the victims saw three to four men fleeing the area, all of them wearing dark masks. and as for this car that's still on the lot, the note explains it all, vehicle is waiting to be towed by the insurance company. back to you now, pat. julie carey. thanks, julie. fairfax county mother just pleaded guilty to child abuse for the second time. news4 was first to report on the case against the mother of three. she was accused of beating her 8-year-old son with a plastic hanger and her fists. in 2010, she served time for pricking her son, who was just 3

at the time, with a needle. she will be sentenced in december in the latest case. new york state lawmakers are praisings list and calling on other sites to remove ads for synthetic drugs like k 2. a state senator there says he and other officials e-mailed craigslist, ebay and back page to alert them about posts involving synthetic drugs. their letter suggested that the sites were being used to help sell and distribute the drugs. the center says craigslist immediately responded, removing all posts that mention k 2 and other related key phrases. i'm chris lawrence at the live desk with breaking news in the presidential race. nbc news has just confirmed that former texas governor rick perry is dropping out of the race. now, perry did not make the cut for next week's primetime debate because he wasn't polling well enough. his camp has been running so low on money that he has had to stop paying some of his staffers and reportedly had to close his

tomorrow, maryland is remembering state delegate james brock tore. state flags are flying at half-staff in his honor. delegate proctor spent 25 years pop issing prince george's county and charles counties. tracee wilkins takes a look at his legacy. >> reporter: these pictures tell the story. >> we did things together and ran together. >> reporter: you never saw one without the other. some guy said to me, hey, mr. proctor, they would get the two of us mixed up, believe it or not and call him val lar yo. >> reporter: he lost his partner in politics and a friend, with the passing of delegate james proctor. >> so, it's really been a tough last couple of weeks. >> reporter: proctor passed yesterday due to complications from heart disease. he served as the delegate for 25

years. >> came time for an opportunity to integrate southern maryland, he was the first african-american to be in the legislature from southern prince george's county. >> reporter: president of the maryland senate, mike miller and delegate val lar yo ran as a three-man ticket and lived like brothers. so they both agree on who would be best to fill his seat. proctor's wife, susie. >> she had been involved with him from day one and she knows enough to fill those shoes. >> i'm going to ask the search coast, two search committees, public hearings, his wife be allowed to fill his seat. >> reporter: right now the focus of the proctor family is on the loves delegate proctor. they released this statement saying -- coming up on news4 at 6:00 there are now two vacancies in the maryland state house that need to be filled from prince

george's county. we will explain what that process is going to look like. in clinton, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. lawmakers in northern virginia are calling for action on a consumer loan nightmare that also affects residents in maryland and d.c., loans from so-called predatory lenders who used vehicle titles as co-late ran. interest rates can exceed 260%. many of these businesses are along route 1 near the beltway with quick access from d.c. and maryland. last year, 40,000 people who took loans defaulted, half lost their vehicles. >> this is problem is out of control. predatory lenders, they target the military, target low-income families, they target people who are not native speakers and, target them other states. >> a huge concern of mine. the voice of consumers in virginia, i will stand up and fight for them. >> efforts to change laws regarding loans against vehicle

aqib ba's day is spent on dialysis. it's time consuming, restrictive and some foods she just can't eat. so, after the transplant, you come home, what's the first meal you're gonna have? >> i have been craving a milkshake. >> reporter: with the wait for a new kidney typically three years or more, aqib ba decided to speed things up so she turned to matching donors.com, a database connecting patients and willing donors. she sent out hundreds of e-mails. >> don't need too much, only staying a few days. >> reporter: this is sarah fleming, a 36-year-old accountant from st. louis. she saw aqib ba's e-mail and decided to donate. >> if i needed a kidney or one of my loved ones did, we weren't a match for each other, i would have to rely on a stranger. how can i expect somebody else to do that if i'm not willing do it myself? >> reporter: 800 miles later, sandra landed in northern virginia at innova fairfax hospital where the transplant
