announcer: news 4 today starts now. right now at 6:00 a.m., a sex assault suspect runs into a metro station and through a train tunnel. still, this morning, police don't know where the man is. we have a stretch of perfect weather on the way. today, we have to deal with quite a bit of rain. looks like overcast skies, we are dealing with it all today. i'm gos gangie gosk. >> i'm david culver. first, let's turn to the weather and storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein.

looks like we will need the umbrella. >> you are right. no rain right in washington here in the storm team 4 weather center. closely watching showers tracking across northern virginia. they are getting closer to the metro area. south of it, thunder showers showing up. this is west of richmond. this cluster producing heavy downpours. right now, scattered sprinkles. the close up radar in green in fairfax and loudoun county. farther south, the area in yellow, south of warrenton and fauquier county. these showers getting closer to washington, nearby suburbs, prince george's and montgomery counties in the next hour or so. temperatures are cool. in the 50s north of the metro area.

mid-60s in washington. mid to upper 60s around the chesapeake bay. i'll show you the hour-by-hour threat of rain in a few minutes. >> we'll check in with you. breaking news out of prince william county. a man is dead after a double shooting in gainsville. police found two victims in a parking lot before 2:00 this morning. both men had been shot, both rushed to the hospital. a 23-year-old man died, a 22-year-old in critical condition. a third person grazed by a bullet. the suspect left the scene in a light colored suv. a sexual assault leads police to a metro station. police are looking for this man. just after midnight, he ran into the wheaton station and down a tunnel. police chased him into the tunnel, but he did get away. officers cleared the track and

trains will run normally this morning. millions of people across tokyo will try to get back to a normal sense of lifestyle after a strong earthquake. the power of the 5.4 magnitude earthquake rattling the cameras. no one appears to be hurt. they had to help some people stuck in elevators. officials did not issue a tsunami warning. in tacoma, people are on alert. news 4 was rolling when police cuffed this man. he could be the person that stabbed a man near the corner of university boulevard and new hampshire avenue. police are not saying what led up to this. thursday night, officers responding to a double shooting a couple blocks away. right now, hundreds of cyclists getting ready to ride along the tacoma to highlight an

issue. at 8:00 they are hosting an honor ride. they will start in arlington and ride 25, 50 or 75 miles all to raise money for injured veterans and veterans struggling with prescription drug use. the heroes 9/11 5 k will start. you don't have to run, you can go, cheer or donate. go to carl sandburg middle school to take part. major road closures for the police 5k. at 3:00, army navy drive will be shut down between south 12th street and southeast street. columbia pike is going to close between pentagon and south joy street. >> one of those days you have to be aware. washington boulevard, westbound

is going to close to 395. itis going to start at 6:00. southbound route 110 will close from rosalyn to t street. all roads should be back open around 8:00 tonight. on september 12, 2001, firefighters hung an american flag at the pentagon. 14 years after flight 77 crashed into the building, workers continue the tradition there. they put the flag on the west side of the building. 184 people lost their lives that day at the pentagon. the brother of a victim is fund raising a new visitors education center near the pentagon memorial. julie carey toured the site. she reported on why it's so important to younger generations. >> reporter: he helped lead the effort to get the pentagon memorial built and often spent time at the bench bearing the name of his brother.

now, he's heading another fund-raiser in the grassy clover leaf. he tells me, when he led a tour of sixth graders, he realized more than a memorial might be needed to help others remember. the sixth graders didn't know it was a plane that created the devastation. >> we started getting into a conversation. they said no, we thought they were bombs that went off. that's when we realized we had a teachable moment here that we were missing for generations coming after 9/11. >> reporter: these drawings show where they hope future generations will learn the story of what happened on 9/11. the video helps make the pitch. >> the pentagon story is the nation's story. >> a story of heroism and people went in to try to help recover people that were trapped. the story of how we rebuilt the pentagon in a year. and how the world changed, tsa came into existence.

>> reporter: the center will serve to tie together the nearby air force memorial and arlington cemetery. a walking path is planned from the center to where 9/11 remains are. the price tag for the project is $60 million. they want to raise $15 million to help with maintenance at the pentagon memorial as well. >> try to do what we can here to tell the story of what happened at the pentagon. >> reporter: in arlington, julie carey, news 4. we are working to find out more about the man with a knife who was shot and killed inside union station. the man stabbed a woman after he started fighting at a nearby building yesterday. a security guard chased him near the mcdonalds inside the union station. when the man went after the guard with a knife, the guard shot him. the woman is expected to be okay. check with amtrak this morning before boarding your

train. a train killed a person outside of baltimore yesterday. the train originated here in d.c. and was on the way to new york city. no one on board was hurt. amtrak reported delays into the evening hours yesterday. major track work could mess up your plans that weekend. this affects all six lines. we have the breakdown. trains on red, orange, silver, blue and yellow lines going to run every 24 minutes. the greenbelt station on the green line, that's closed. shuttle butses are going to tak you to the park. that will be until monday morning. >> travel alerts in the district. at 9:30, v-dot will close one lane. crews will reopen the street at 3:30. it will take about four days. >> gotta be prepared for that. good morning, it is 6:08. it is an annual tradition in

well, it's flames like these that have parts of california under a state of emergency this morning. hundreds of people near sacramento are evacuating. thousands of homes are in the line of fire.

it's destroyed dozens of them. gadi schwartz is there to show us the fire firsthand. >> reporter: in fire ravaged california, there is a new inferno growing. flames so intense, so large, spreading so fast. >> get down there. >> even a tv crew from kcra was caught inside the blaze. nearby, the heat is churning you have firenados, homes fully engolfed, explosions heard within. >> it's pushing up against the lines we have so far. >> reporter: more evacuations are under way and families are ready to get out. >> get the personal things i need to take and god willing, survive. >> reporter: the fire has grown to 50,000 acres in just three

days. near fresno, the rough fire, california's largest fire is 119,000 acres. itis forced the evacuation of an exotic cat rescue. >> it's best to move the animals out at this point. >> reporter: the fire is going near the ancient sequoia forest. one of the most remarkable things is the overview of the forest. umpb unfortunately, a lot of the trees are dying out. sprinklers are being set up to save the trees. conditions where a tiny spark with quickly explode into unstoppable flames during an historic fire season that's only begun. gadi schwartz. 107 people have died at a

crane collapse. a construction crane went through the ceiling of a grand mosque in mecca just before evening prayer. 230 people hurt. the collapse comes days after the pilgrimage, one of the largest gatherings for muslims in the world. 2 million people attended last year. an nypd officer is on leave right now. it is a case of mistaken identity. blake was outside a hotel texting when the officer took him to the ground, thinking he was a suspect for credit card fraud. he's ha two previous lawsuits. >> absent from the first day of school and students were eraseed from the system or so it seemed. the software glitch went beyond fairfax county to other school

districts. this mom likes having access to her kids school records. the new student information system, having just launched this school year. the new s.i.s. let's her check for grades, discipline and health information. when she logged on, her high school aged son didn't exist. >> how could he be dropped? >> she says it started with an excused absence on the first day of school, he had a scheduled college visit. >> i called them and asked them and followed all the protocol and got a message on the phone later in the day that he would have to come in and be reactivated. i was confused about that. >> after that college visit, her son went back up to school the second day of classes to be told he wasn't in the system and his class schedule was gone.

>> on the first day he totally dropped out of the system. >> we asked fairfax county schools. they didn't know how many were impacted, but it was more than one school. they apologized and told us, quote, this is one of the limitations in the s.i.s. that we've discovered and will be working with the venn tor to make improvements. loudoun county uses the same system for its students. a school spokesperson saying they have had no widespread issues. she worries about her son's workload. >> he might wait a week before he's in the system. that is a disadvantage. >> the counselors are working hard to get things back on track. >> that's frustrating. >> it is. our stretch of dry weekend weather is over. >> briefly. a brief interlude of rain, then dry weather. the radar showing that rain is

getting closer to the metro area. it's moving across virginia out of west virginia and farther to the south. it's raining harder, too. the areas in the yellows and orange, lightning and thunder. a close up view of the radar, the leading edge in the green, sprinkles now. fairfax county into montgomery, loudoun, prince william and southern fauquier county and patches of green and yellow over the metro area in the next hour. right now, low to mid-60s in suburbs and nearby the beltway, by the bay as well. a cool morning, only in the 50s from frederick county, west virginia to frederick county virginia. here is the hour-by-hour timing of more rain moving through, 10:00 to 11:00 this morning through noontime, a chance of thunder. a greater chance of thunderstorms developing, that's starting around 3:00 p.m. in the

shenandoah valley. then into the metro area between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m., some could be heavy downpour, producing an inch or two of rain. watch for ponding water late this afternoon and into the evening hours. by 11:00, it is gone. for the afternoon, the threat of severe weather is very low for tornadoes or hail, but a moderate threat of brief gusts of strong wind and rain that may cause brief ponding of water. you can see from the storm team 4 tower camera. by 6:00, upper 60s. thunder showers may get up to 80 in the early afternoon. a chance of stronger storms going to be between 1:00 p.m. to as late as 6:00 p.m. overnight tonight, storms quickly ending by midnight and dawn tomorrow. beautiful day on sunday. partly cloudy, into the mid-70s. gorgeous weather setting up.

two people are dead after a plane crash into the columbian -- an american pilot in intensive care. the plane was assigned to a crew of a movie starring tom cruise. his spokesperson did not have a comment. the two engine planes flew into bad weather yesterday afternoon. no one on board reported an emergency. >> one of our nation's darkest days. 14 years after the 9/11 attack, members of the fdny spent their evening in prince george's county. >> they were here to play softball. we have the report on this group of heroes that is always giving back. >> reporter: these are the men and women who risk their lives every day to help strangers. those who died in the line of duty were honored in the opening ceremony. all those heroes were

in news 4 your health, a treatment for high blood pressure could be a change for millions of americans. >> they were able to cut it 25%. we have the report on the new treatment. >> reporter: it's a significant contributor to two leading causes of death, heart attack and stroke. as many as one in three adults has high blood pressure. the systolic or top number measures the pressure when the heart contracts.

up until now, the target was 140 or less if you are 50 and older. a study suggests getting it below 120 could cut the risk of death by 20% and cut a third of cardiovascular events, heart attack and stroke. it will change the way they treat hypertension. >> this is huge. 25% less death and a third, you know, 33% less heart attacks, strokes and heart failure that's huge. you don't get that lowering cholesterol. >> reporter: some required two or more prescriptions to get their blood pressure down to 120. blood pressure meds, especially in some senior citizens can make them feel dizy or lightheaded. the benefit of this may far outweigh the risk. >> we have been more lax on controlling blood pressure. this study shows we have to get people's blood pressure back to normal. that will help them live longer.

thunder and lightning start to regenerate shenandoah valley, then move closer to the metro area. around 6:00 p.m., a line of downpours, thunder and lightning. this will produce brief, damaging winds, and enough heavy rain to cause ponding of water. by the earning, it's all gone and we have another stretch of dry weather. little risk or tornadoes or hail. brief, heavy downpours for the afternoon, they are the severe risk. how much rain? we could use it. the lawns could get over an inch in the area in the blue and lavender. that includes southern maryland and northern neck. another area, the shenandoah valley could get an inch or so. the metro area, half inch to an inch. imimpact likely to be moderate. there's that gorgeous sunrise urpd way. this is the last of the sun we
