area out of the south and west. if you are heading to the maryland game or a high school football game, you have to have a poncho or maybe an umbrella. likely the showers will continue into the afternoon. storm team 4 radar and the broad area of rain from west virginia to shenandoah valley and northern virginia. this is coming into the metro area and sweeping into maryland. getting thunder and lightning half way through fredericksburg. that area of lightning coming to the northern neck. thupder and lightning to the rest of luray tracking up the shenandoah valley. pockets of moderate downpours. into northern fauquier county, east of there is light rain in prince william, fairfax and montgomery. a batch of heavier downpour to the east of fredericksburg into charles county. it may be moving into prince

george's county. that's coming in a few minutes. >> thanks. 8:32 now. breaking news out of prince william county. one man is dead after a shooting in gainsville. police found two victims in a parking lot just before 2:00 this morning. both men had been shot. they were both rushed to the hospital. a 23-year-old man died. a 22-year-old in critical condition at this hour. we know a third man was grazed by a bullet. police say the suspect left the scene in a light colored suv. new this morning, a sexual assault suspect leads police on a chase in the wheaton metro station. the transit police are looking for this particular guy. look at this picture. around 10:00 p.m., this man ran into the wheaton station and down a tunnel. police chased him into the tunnel. officers cleared the tracks and trains will run normal this morning.

people in takoma park are on alert after violent attacks two nights in a row. news 4 was rolling when police caught this man. he could be the person who stabbed a man near a bank around 9:30 friday night near the corner of university bailiff and new hampshire avenue. thursday night, they responded to a double shooting a couple blocks away. hundreds of bicyclists riding along the potomac. ride to recovery is hosting the first honor ride in the area. the group started a half hour ago in arlington. it's riding either 25, 50 or 75 miles to raise money for injured veterans. the hero's 9/11 5k begins at 9:00. it will honor the sacrifices of

september 11th. you don't have to run, you can go, cheer, or donate. go to carl sandburg middle school if you would like to take part. we are working to find out more about the man with a knife shot and killed inside union station. that man stabbed a woman after they started fighting at a nearby building yesterday. a security guard chased him near that mcdonald's inside union station. investigators say when the man went after the guard with a knife, that is when the guard shot him. the woman is expected to be a kay. check with amtrak before boarding your train. a train hit and killed a person outside baltimore yesterday. the train originated hfrom here in washington an the way to new york. no one on board was hurt. they reported delays yesterday. track work if you are planning to take metro this weekend. it affects all six lines. here is the breakdown.

trains on the red, orange, silver, blue and yellow lines run every 24 minutes. the greenbelt station on the green line is shut down. shuttle buses are going to take riders from greenbelt to college park thachlt lasts until monday morning. we have a traffic alert to let you know about in the district. at 9:30, d-dot will close one lane on the key bridge at m street northwest. they will open the street at 3:30 this afternoon. the whole project could take four days. >> all right. be prepared for that. we are looking at 8:35 on this saturday morning. it's an annual tradition that was in jeopardy of shutting down. adams morgan day is going to go on. we will look at how it is going to be different. california under a state of emergency.

the adams morgan day celebration is on for tomorrow but it is going to be different this year. homeowners and businesses came together to arrange it after the original sponsor canceled. the art display is going to be indoors. 18th street is going to stay open to traffic the entire time. it runs from noon until 6:00 tomorrow. this morning, you may see the d.c. mayor walking around your neighborhood. the mayor will participate in a mile and a half walk around a neighborhood in northeast. that starts at 9:00 a.m. in 20 minutes, she will be joined by ward members and health officials. ice part of the fit d.c. program

james blake. that's him on the ground, the officer above him. this is a case of mistaken identity. blake was outside the hotel when the plain clothes officer pulled him to the ground, thinking he was a suspect for credit card fraud. the officer has had two previous excessive force lawsuits. starting at 3:00 this afternoon, army navy drive closed between south 12th street and south e street. columbia pike will close near south joy street and washington boulevard closed starting at 6:00. 110. all roads should be open at 8:00 tonight. we know there are a lot of events happening outside today and some places are already seeing rain. >> that's right. tom kierein is here with us. for runners, it's not too bad of

weather. >> have a poncho ready. we have community events going on here. we have periscoping going on here. as you head out, you will run into rain. there's rain on the storm team 4 radar. that is showing the rain continues to fall heading to the north and east. areas in the yellow and oranges are coming down hard. thunder and lightning is coming into the northern neck of virginia. north and west of there, generally light rain, a few pockets of moderate rain. thunder and lightning, too, with this one cell about to move into northern fauquier county, near warrenton. it's going to track across 66 into prince william county. you may get this one and thunder and lightning and brief, heavy downpours as that moves through. this area in the light green,

light rain in prince george's. farther west, other areas of downpours along 81 from harrisonburg to winchester. thunder and lightning with that as well over the next hour or so. temperatures right now, rather cool. low to mid-60s. shenandoah valley, it is raining there now. it's a cool 60 degrees and just at dawn, we had a beautiful rainbow showing up with sprinkles. this was taken by john in arlington, virginia. a lot of great pictures of that on social media. thanks for posting it. here is the hour-by-hour timing. most of the rain will be north and west of the metro area and south and east of the metro area by noontime. then, as we get into the afternoon hours, another round of thunder and lightning and stronger storms closer to the metro area. this is 6:00 p.m. a line from the pennsylvania

border down to washington and then into northern virginia, weakening. this line might produce brief gusts of wind that might cause brief damage as well as heavy downpours that may cause ponding of water, up to an inch. quickly may fall out of the storms between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. east of washington, they break down across the bay. during the rest of the evening, looks like they settle down. all the storm is done. before then, a small risk of tornadoes or hail. a little higher risk of damaging winds and heavy rain that may cause brief ponding or flooding of water. rainfall totals, we really need the rain. the area in blue could be an inch or more. much of the area north and west of washington getting an inch or ma more. might get a half inch to inch. a moderate impact for the afternoon as the strong gusts and heavy downpours come through. if you are going to a football

following a developing story out of arizona. police are questioning a person of interest in a freeway shooting. they arrested him on unrelated charges. it's gripped the area for two weeks. the school district rerouted buses to make sure students were

safe. there could be more than one person behind the shootings. flames like these with parts of california under a state of emergency. hundreds of people are evacuated right now. fire officials say that the wildfire is exploding in size. this morning, it covers more than 50,000 acres, more than 100 square miles. thousands of homes in the path. it's destroyed a half dozen of them. we have video of the after math of the train collapse in mecca. at least 107 people are dead. more than 230 others are hurt. the collapse happened just before yesterday's evening prayer during heavy wind and rain. it comes days before the hajj pilgrimage, one of the biggest gatherings in the world. they were absent from the first day of school. students in northern virginia were erased from the system, or so it seemed.

the new computer software glitch went beyond fairfax county. this mom likes having access to her kids school records. it's a feature of the s.i.s. or student information system having just launched this school year. she can check attendance, schedule and grades. when she logged on earlier this week, her high school aged son didn't exist. >> boggles my mind how he could be dropped like a hot potato. >> she says it started with an excused absence on the first day of school. her son had a scheduled college visit. >> i called him and asked him and followed protocol and got a message on the phone later in the day that he would have to come in and be react fated, which i was confused about. >> reporter: after that college

vis visit, he shows back up at school to be told he wasn't in the system and his class schedule was gone. >> on the first day, he totally dropped out of the system. >> reporter: we asked fairfax county public schools. they didn't know how many people were impacted. they apologized to those affected and told us, quote, this is one of the limitations in s.i.s. we have discovered and will be working with the vendor to make improvements in the system. loudoun county using the same system for its students. a spokesperson saying no widespread issues. linda worries about her son's workload and catching up. he might wait a week before he's in the system is a disadvantage. >> the counselors have been working hard to get things back on track. we continue to track breaking news right now. one person dead and two others hurt after shots rang out in

i'm derrick ward. take a look. this is the scene of a shooting early this morning. the mvp bar and grill on old hall road. when police got here, they found them in a parking lot nearby. another person suffered life threatening injuries. while police were here, a third person identified as a 25-year-old said he suffered a grave wound. that person had a shot in the hand, but expected to survive. not much in the way of information about the suspect, only that the person responsible for the shooting left the scene in a light colored suv. the investigation continues. we don't have information about the identity of the victims or more information other than the light colored suv. we are live in gainsville,

congressional district. it's at 3:00 in maryland. some community members in d.c. starting neighborhood watch training today. this is in response to the recent spike in crime. training in ward one is from 9:30 this morning to 11:30 this morning. residents and business owners are going to talk about how to address problems on their block. >> if you are looking for saturday plans, head over to the 17th street festival in northwest. it starts at noon and it is free to get inside. now, if you are driving in the area, 17th street northwest will be closed between r street and p street northwest. >> moving south, northern virginia, fairfax county, starting today, registered hunters can bring out their bow and arrows to hunt deer. the program runs into february. it's the main way of keeping down the white tailed deer population within the county. in more than 50 years, officials

say they have never had an injury related to this type of hunting. it could cost $16 for a round trip drive on interstate 66. the ten-mile stretch inside the beltway will have tolls starting in 2017. the price would change, depending on the traffic. it could cost you as much as $7 in the morning and $9 on your way home. that's how we got to the $16 number. vehicles with two or more riders will not have to pay. fairfax county lawmakers are going to discuss the plan with v-dot later this month. a relaxing place, but not for one homeowner in montgomery county. he found this. an alligator hanging out yesterday morning. he called 911. after three hours of draining the pond, animal control officers got the gator out. they took it to the wildlife preserve and zoo in frederick county. i don't know what i would do.

comment. the two-engine plane flew into bad weather. no one on board reported an emergency. >> in news 4 your health, a new treatment for high low pressure could be a game changer for millions of americans. they were able to cut the death rate from high blood pressure by a staggering 25%. tom reports on this. >> reporter: a contributor to death, heart attacks and strokes. as many as 1 in 3 adults have high blp. the systolic number measures the pressure on the blood vessels. the target for anyone 50 or older was 140 or less. getting it below 120 could cut the risk of heart attacks, heart failure and stroke. researchers say it will change the way doctors treat

hypertension. >> this is huge. 25% less deaths and a third, you know, 33% less heart attacks, strokes and heart failure. it's huge. you don't get that low in cholesterol. >> reporter: some people required two or more prescriptions to get thundershower blood pressure down to 120. blood pressure meds, especially in senior citizens can make them feel dizzy or lightheaded and make them fall. they say the benefits may outweigh the risk. >> we have been lax on controlling blood pressure. this study shows we have to get it back to normal and that will help them live longer. >> reporter: patients should not change the current medication levels without first talking to their doctor. 14 years after the september 11th terror attack, the world paused to remember the lives lost. in kabul, afghanistan, u.s. military personnel held a wreath

far. right now, getting much needed rain. the lawns are looking like the desert. we are getting beneficial rain coming through. unfortunately, it's going to affect the community festivals going on today and the football games going on. storm team 4 radar showing the rain from northern virginia to maryland tracking off to the north and east. the heavier downpours in the yellow and orange along 81 from la ray all the way to winchester, martinsburg and hagerstown and the metro area. light rain in montgomery county in prince george's and fairfax. the area in yellow, coming into southern prince george's county. it stretches to charles county. to the west, this one batch of moderate rain in northern fauquier is moving into lauden county. no thunder or lightning with these. there is quite a bit with this batch of heavy rain. that's about to move into the

central northern neck, crossing the potomac into st. mary's county and southern calvert county. it's another hour or so. expect very heavy rain with thunder and lightning. they are not severe storms. the main threat is ponding of water. temperatures are cool. it is raining, 60s noo shenandoah valley. low to mid-70s around the bay. at dawn, we had a beautiful rainbow. a lot of people sending me these photos. this is from philip doer. it lasted a few minutes, then the clouds moved in and the rainbow went away. hour-by-hour, heavier downpours north and west of washington around noontime as well as south and east. much of the metro area not going to have a lot of rain until late in the afternoon. the new timing on that, thunderstorms coming in into washington and nearby suburbs. this line is going to be around

5:00 to 6:00 p.m. latest timing on that, town pours, strong gusts of wind. there's a slight risk of that. that other line, st. mary's county and the evening hours. as the line moves east of washington, by 8:00 or 9:00 p.m., into the evening hours, it weakens and diminishes. by midnight, everything is done. low risk for tornado or hail. a moderate risk of high gusts of wind and heavy downpours may cause ponding of water. watch out for that. needed rain. check out this area. it's changed in the area in the purple and blue. an inch or more of beneficial rain. the metro area, much of maryland, the eastern shore could get two to three inches as it passes through. the impact is going to be moderate. have an umbrella ready and poncho. maryland is playing, temperatures in the mid to upper 70s during the game. the shower and storm activity
