news4 reporter carol maloney tells us how he'll keep it cool under pressure today. >> this isn't just any given sunday. it's the redskins kickoff to the kirk cousins era 2.0. the 'skins hoping for a better outcome the second time around. cousins started five games last year until being benched because of turnovers. he's not proud of his 2-7 record as a starter throwing interceptions in four of the games. so he's coming in with a lot to prove but the key is to just relax. and not let the moment overwhelm him. >> yeah, it's a big game, yes it's important. but i'm the kind of guy who's going to acknowledge that. it's my job to almost stay relaxed and enjoy the process and enjoy the moment and have fun and put a smile on he face. >> the biggest thing he can't feel like the weight of the world is on his shoulders. he has to rely on people to help him out and we have total confidence in kirk. he has to understand if it doesn't go right early that hang in there and good things will continue to happen. >> cousins will be tested in the first opening day start since college. the dolphins have two of the best defensive linemen in the league.

run. park police say all lanes between route 123 and the key bridge are still closed right now. that's all the red on the screen there. a woman died. we are working to learn who she was. also happening today, d.c. is serving as the course for the events d.c. nations triathlon. it benefits the leukemia and lymphoma society. it goes down into independence avenue and rock creek park. all roads should be open by 1:15. and 15-year-old keira patrice richardson suffers from seizures and doesn't have her medicine on her. police think that she may be with renee bridgeforth. she was last seen leaving roosevelt high school on friday. nearly 100 people will look for a new place to live today. 27 of them just children. a fire torched this apartment complex where they lived last

night in prince george's county. and one firefighter is recovering this morning from heat exhaustion we have learned. everyone who lived inside the complex in temple hills got out safety. one man is credited for throwing shoes at windows to get people out. and the family of hannah graham is holding an event to remember her. it's exactly one year sense she disappeared. charlottesville police discovered her body a month later. graham's family will hold a memorial for her at noon. that's at the area she was last seen alive. a loaded gun is off the streets at adams morgan. a man was seen clutching his waist band and when he ran away from the police, he dropped a loaded semi-autd matic. they said he is from lorton and is facing several gun charges. in a few hours that same community will be packed for adams morgan day. the street festival is going to be just a little bit different

news4 is committed to raising mental health awareness with our campaign changing minds. and this morning in fairfax, there's a walk to end the stigma that surrounds depression and other mental disorders. >> yeah. the out of the darkness community walk is being put on by the american foundation for suicide prevention. david culver is the emcee of the event and he has more. good morning. >> reporter: hey, adam and angie, good morning to both of you. you know, i was just telling this crowd -- you want me to take this mic, i'll take this mic so that i can hear me too. i was just telling this crowd that when we started changing minds as a campaign over a year ago now, we thought, you know, this would be an initiative that would be good for the community. good for folks out here. what we have learned is that working at nbc4 it's really impacted us. look behind me here, we have more than a thousand folks gathered -- oh, some ped feedback here. more than a thousand -- i have to lose this mic so we don't

at 9:13 we continue to stay on top of the breaking news right now. arlington county police say a suspicious vehicle was spotted at the pentagon. we can tell you that the pentagon metro station is closed right now. the bomb squad has been called out. we'll continue to follow this story and bring you more information as we get it. well, a wildfire is raging right now and four firefighters are in the hospital because of it. with second degree burns. that is the latest on conditions

in california. the butte wildfire is burning its way through hundreds of acres north of san francisco. it is just a little bit different. it's destroyed at least 86 homes since wednesday. thousands of people are evacuating right now. and nbc's tom miller spoke to some residents who are worried about what's ahead. >> reporter: burning since wednesday, the butte fire keeps destroying property and disrupting lives. >> we have no telephone, we have no electricity. we don't have water. >> reporter: in the small town of mountain ranch deep within the burn zone, linda spence is relying on bottled water and generators to keep going. >> people lost their homes. so many homes are levelled, burned to the ground. >> reporter: the number of homes lost, up drastically to 86 with 51 outbuildings destroyed. they're working to keep it from going up.

chinook helicopters make water drops near san andreas. down below, fire crews put in a fire line. up the road a strike team is using fire to fight fire. with mandatory evacuations in at least ten communities and 6,400 structures threatened, those who live here are on edge. hundreds attend a town hall meeting looking for answers. >> we want to know if they've got an idea of how long it will be or which direction it is coming. >> reporter: with the need so great, those able to help do. this parking lot now a shelter for evacuated animals. >> we need dogs to be well cared for so that their people can -- who have been evacuated can focus on what they need to do. >> tough situation there. well, lightning going in the way for fans trying to watch yesterday's maryland game. football fans had to leave byrd stadium for an hour because of the severe weather. once the fans and the teams returned yeah, a tough day for

terps. they lost to bowling green, 48-27. their momentum was stopped by the lightning. >> another tailgate well under way right now. redskins fans, got some nice weather. >> anticipation building now as professional football opens today at fedex field. great weather for tailgating this morning. we have had the sunshine return. after we did have some morning sprinkles but now those are long gone and the roads that were wet an hour ago they're drying out. getting blow-dried by the wind, it's gusting around 15 or 20 miles an hour. there is a live view, about 2,200 feet above the terrain in northwest washington. we have cleared out temporarily, but i think we'll see some clouds building back in later this afternoon as the upper level disturbance comes on through. right now, that's triggering a few showers way out here in west virginia. that upper level disturbance as

its passes right over our region we might get a patting sprinkle -- passing sprinkle. just a small chance of that. otherwise just a few clouds will be floating on through by the afternoon. look at the temperatures, quickly jumping. we were in the low to mid 50s, shenandoah valley at dawn. now in the low 60s though. oakland, 45 right now. the rest of west virginia is in the 50s. metro area, low to mid 60s nearby suburbs and near 70 near chesapeake bay this morning. a beautiful autumn morning. things are still parched. i took this photo of a lawn in montgomery county on friday under that blue sky. the weekend rains helped out a little bit and the apple trees are almost touching the ground. they're so heavily laden with apples. this photo taken at orrs orchard. i love the autumn apples. temperatures climbing into the upper 60s, near 70 during the

tailgate time. kickoff at 1:00. ought to be in the low 70s at fedex field. a small chance of a sprinkle during the game. in the low to mid 70s during the rest of the afternoon. we'll have that wind begin to diminish a bit under partly sunny skies. here comes the chill. chilliest temperatures we have seen since last spring. since may. it will be down into the 40s. much of the region including shenandoah valley and the mountains. nearby suburbs north and west. down to the upper 40s as well as across much of virginia. eastern suburbs generally around 50 to low 50s, southern maryland. mid 50s to upper 50s right by the baby dawn on monday. then a beautiful day tomorrow. low humidity, lots of sunshine. back to work and school with sunshine and highs reaching the upper 70s. and low humidity but a bit warmer during the around on tuesday. mid 80s again on wednesday with morning lows, low 60s. still not very humid for the

rest of the week. storm team 4 seven day outlook, may hit the upper 80s on thursday and friday and still, comfortably dry, not a lot of humidity around. as we get into saturday, some clouds build into the mid 80s. our next chance of any rain is just a slight chance maybe saturday night into next sunday on the far extended outlook. so between now and then, we stay dry and many of the lawns that are still kind of brown, well, they'll get more and more of that way as the dry pattern is in place for the entire week. average this week is around 80. the average low in the low 60s. much cooler than average tomorrow morning. feeling like autumn. >> all right. thanks, tom. okay, so she's only 5'2" but she's climbing some of the tallest mountains in the

you're watching "news4 today." >> a 22-year-old from our area just completed an amazing climb. >> impressive. sasha digiulian took on the eiger in switzerland. look at how steep that the cliff face is. there on this side. she conquered it too. nbc's wendy rieger asked her how it felt to be on top of the world.

>> reporter: the eiger means ogre in swiss. it can be mean and ugly especially to those who try to crawl up its side. many have felt the lethal breath as they have been blown off or frozen to death in their quest. >> that sunset is unreal. >> reporter: this is sasha digiulian, becoming the first woman to free climb the north face last month. it's a complicated passage, known as murder wall. because of its forbidding nature. >> this entire encompassing of me stepping out of my comfort zone of what i knew and trying something that i didn't know. i didn't know if i could do it. >> reporter: in free climbing one uses a rope and gear only to catch a fall. which means your ascent is determined by your strength and the mountain. >> let's finish this. >> reporter: digiulian is lucky. her passion seized her quite early. she grew up in the washington area, attending the school in mclean.

she started climbing at age 6. she ventured into competitive climbing when she was 8 and she never looked back or down. >> i've never really had to question who i am and what i want because i'm so happy with what i am that i'm most passionate about. >> reporter: her ascent of the eiger took a month and it included her climbing partner. they spent nights making camp in the crevices. >> we are about to dig our bed. >> reporter: they had a few setbacks from weather. >> today was a giant smack down. >> reporter: the greatest danger on the north face of a mountains is storms. that can ambush a climber. the other danger comes from within. fear. >> this climb was probably the peak of my fear. i was scared just about every day. it was focusing on not thinking about falling really and focusing on what i could control.

>> reporter: while physical strength and agility gets you on the mountain digiulian says your mind gets you to the top. >> your mind is overruling your body's exhaustion. you're convincing yourself that you can keep going when you don't know if physically you can. >> reporter: on august 29 they reached the summit. what a mountaintop. just breathtaking. rock climbing is clearly for the rare free range human but the tenacity to reach our individual heights applies even to us mortals down below. wendy rieger, news4 washington. >> i love that story. digiulian has her sights set on el cap in yosemite next and a mountain in brazil. all we can say to her is good luck, again, don't look down. all right, well, we're continuing to stay on top of breaking news. arlington county police say a suspicious vehicle was spotted a

>> i'm angie goff. yes, on this half hour, we want to get a check on our weather. we know after the rain yesterday most of that is just moving out. but now we're dealing with the cooldown. >> absolutely. i think my lawn was so happy to have that rain yesterday. >> yeah. >> you can hear the blades of grass giggling with joy as that rain was coming down yesterday. reagan national had less than a quarter of an inch but a few isolated spots got more than that. now this morning early on a few sprinkles, they're long gone and the temperatures are beaking to climb after we were -- are beginning to climb. most of maryland and virginia, around the bay, around 70 degrees. reagan national at 66. there's the sprinkles this morning. getting a few sprinkles now, way out here in west virginia. that's part of an upper level disturbance coming into the metro area, but not until maybe mid afternoon. that might trigger an isolated

tickets to the game on the redskins website and stub hub. the gates will open at 11:00. >> surprising there's still tickets. a report about problems in the newest rail cars. our news partner wtop reporting that the 7000 series cars are having software issues and that's causing a slowdown in production. the agency is receiving 8 to 12 new cars a month instead of 16. and according to the report the company that makes the cars is fixing issues with the doors and propulsion system. metro is receiving a total of nearly 750 new rail cars. production should be back to normal by this december. we have new information about a sexual assault that caused a chase through the wheaton metro station. around 10:00 friday night a man touched a woman inappropriately and he ran off, jumped on to the tracks and ran into the tunnel toward glenmont. metro cut power and searched for

the man for three hours but didn't find him. prince william police have not arrested anyone that in a shooting that killed a young man and hurt two others. we told you this as breaking news yesterday morning and now we know there was a fight between the men early saturday morning near old linton hall road and charis avenue. claude jackson iii is the man who died. he was from gainesville. now a decision 2016 update and you may recognize one of the men who has joined the race. former prince george's county state's attorney glenn ivey is running. he says if elected he plans to focus on education and the economy. >> we have a lot of work to do but when we come together which can make impossible things happen. and we need to go to work with one thing in mind. there's nothing wrong with america that can't be fixed by

we want to get back to the breaking news right now. news4's derrick ward just arrived outside the pentagon where police are investigating that suspicious car. >> you got some new information there. what are you hearing? >> reporter: well, this has been going on for a couple of hour news. we understand that it may be standing down a bit. not completely. here's what we know. earlier this morning, three men in an suv drove into the south parking lot. now, that suv crashed and it

jumped a curb. three individuals were taken into custody by pentagon police and the bomb squad was called out out of precaution. county police and fire were on the scene and some are clearing out. but the roads have just seemingly reopened. i mean, just in the time since we have been here. there was an armed pentagon police officer there with an m-16. automatic rifle. we tells you the level of security we have around here, generally with an incident like this. as we understand, three men are in custody. as you can see, some of the emergency vehicles are leaving. the fire department, the ambulances and of course the bomb squad. that's all we know at this point. things seem to be returning to normal but as you can imagine this is quite a dynamic morning let's say it because of the other incidents going on down here. the triathlon which is near this area and the pentagon which is a secure property here in the city. again, we don't know if there was any credibility to the threat that they perceived here, but three men are in custody after crashing their car on the

that would love and foster him. the family was considering an adoption, they saw nick on wednesday's child. they knew he was a perfect fit the minute they heard him. and when nick met them the first time the feeling was mutual. >> it's a feeling you know what it is but don't know how to express it. like a pleasurable feeling in many many ways. >> reporter: his new mom is a teacher and both parents are high school coaches. . the skoech -- coach invited nick to join the team on the field. they all got up early just to welcome nick back to the campus. nick is 16 now and a sophomore in high school. and the coach said he was impressed with his moves and his high academic goals. just like those of his team members. >> recruiting, first thing we do is look at the am -- academics. >> brains and brawn is important in the family.

hotel last week when a plainclothes officer pulled him to the ground. the cop thought he was a suspect for credit card fraud. >> it was completely unnecessary, whether i was a criminal or not. whether i was a person they were looking for, i still don't think the person they were looking for deserved to be treated the way i was treated. that's the biggest issue, correcting that kind of behavior. >> and that officer has faced two excessive force lawsuits. he's on administrative leave. we're learning that subway had complaints about jared fogle dating back to 2011. subway received one serious complaint, but did nothing. the company says the complaint did not mention criminal or sexual behavior. the woman who filed that complaint also took her concerns to the fbi and secretly recorded conversations with fogle. fogle pleaded guilty to sex with a minor and child pornography charges last month. he could serve up to 12 years behind bars. well, i want you to take a

moment, look at your screen here. just like storm team 4 said, we got a lot of rain yesterday. but most of us didn't see this. i want to say thanks to skip yates who sent us a great video. that's a waterspout at cobb island marina. you see it spinning there. the waterspout knocked over some tables and chairs but didn't cause any widespread damage. >> but the image, it's so cool to look at. you know, to see one of those. but they can wreak havoc. >> yeah, a small boat or canoe, you can be in trouble there. they have winds around 15 or 20 mile per hour, but on the periphery there they could be 30 or 40 mile an hour winds. they could be dangerous, but quickly moving on through. we have some beneficial region. some of the region had some rain. we do need some rain, but we're entering another dry pattern. and as you head out today and you're going to be out running

around, check the latest weather and look at the radar and see a sprinkle coming your way on the nbc washington app. a great day to get out and do a morning run or a hike or a bike ride along the path. temperatures upper 60s by 11:00. noontime, and 70 degrees. a slight chance of a sprinkle in the afternoon. winds may be blustery gusting to around 15 or 20 or 25 miles an hour. partly sunny, low to mid 70s in the afternoon. that's when we'll have the best chance of maybe an additional brief sprinkle or a brief shower coming on through. right now, we're getting some here in west virginia. that's part of an upper level disturbance that's coming through later today. and that is the trigger for perhaps a few more sprinkles. getting some right in stafford county along 95. most of that we had earlier this morning has dissipated in southern maryland and the northern neck. there's a live tower camera showing the clouds around.

consumer reporter erika gonzalez is here to tell us what happened to some brides still waiting to relive their big day. >> i like that one better though. >> reporter: emily and her husband married a year ago in a beautiful ceremony in d.c. >> we had sweeping views of the national mall, the weather was perfect. lots of family and friends and it was the guest day. >> reporter: among the expenditures about $3,000 for a videographer. >> we were looking forward to showing it to our future kids and having as a family heirloom. >> reporter: caroline is another bride who hired the same company for her wedding too. she spent nearly $7,000. >> i felt very good about the company and they did a great job for us on the wedding day as far as i could tell. >> reporter: but now, about a year later, neither one of the women have a wedding video to show for it. they hired blue sky films. both women say they have called, gone by and sent e-mails but

just keep getting put off. so they called the news4 consumer watch for help. we set up an interview with the company but the night before our sit down blue sky films cancelled and sent this statement instead saying, quote, while we have strived to exceed our couples expectations, sometimes businesses are handled setbacks. right now, we are simplybehind with our editing. we have working very hard and are fully committed to delivering each couple their finished film at the level of quality and creativity they're expecting. the consumer federation of america says when setting aside vendors for your special day, use the credit card to make purchases even if you're charged slightly more. you have more protection and can dispute charges if need be. also, if you schedule a payment plan with a vendor, it should be heavily weighted on the tail end once the wedding is over and you have what you paid for. the contract with videographer reads clients won't hold the company liable for my damages

we continue to follow breaking news at 10:00 a.m. a car crashes near the pentagon sparking a large police response. >> news4's derrick ward is live at the pentagon. derrick, have things changed down there? >> reporter: yeah, this happened on the south lot and things have stepped down a bit. we have seen the emergency vehicles leaving, we saw a flat bed tow truck go in there, we can assume that's to tow the vehicle out. this happened earlier this morning, maybe over an hour ago, a vehicle went on to the pentagon lot, jumped a curb and crashed. there were three people in the car, they remained in the car, the bomb squad was called out. pentagon police showed up, set up a wide perimeter around the pentagon property. those three people have been taken into custody as we understand it. the vehicle as far as we can
