to the city of brotherly love. philadelphia has always been known for our history and culture. but most recently has been recognized as a world class destination for arts, food, and real estate. and today i'll be taking you on an exclusive tour of this magnificent property located in rittenhouse square, one of the most coveted neighborhoods in philadelphia. the first thing you'll notice as you approach this home is its historic and stately facade. but what lies behind these two red doors is a completely different story. come see what i mean. the first of many wows of this home starts right here in the entryway. it's light, it's modern, it's completely unexpected. this home boasts almost 9,000 square feet, spanning over five floors of open and spacious living, and is truly a modern masterpiece of glass and light. this home's unique architectural design was inspired by the current owner's love of minimalist art. the clean lines and open spaces provide the perfect backdrop to showcase the owner's collections,

and this can be seen throughout the home. just off the foyer is the dining room. over 40 feet in length, 13 foot high ceilings, it's the perfect space for formal entertaining. every detail in this room was clearly thought through, from the sunlight pouring in to the southern exposure to the custom built-in silverware cabinet, all highlighted by this 10 foot rosewood table by nakashima. straight through the italian glass doors, you enter into this contemporary gourmet kitchen worthy of any top chef. it really is a suburban kitchen in a city setting. from the custom designed bulthaup cabinetry to the two eating spaces to all the major appliance players, this kitchen has it all. when i think of a dream kitchen, i think of this space. let's keep going. before we head upstairs, i have to point out this grand staircase. as the last remaining piece of this home, the owner took great lengths to restore it.
2:10 am
the next big wow moment of this property is the second floor. this expansive floor features soaring ceilings, four exposures of natural light, and gallery walls, making it the perfect place for grand entertaining, not to mention stunning artwork. such as this 1968 piece by donald judd, this wall drawing by sol lewitt, and this landmark piece by dan flavin. and of course, an entertaining space like this wouldn't be complete without a full catering kitchen. the third and fourth floor are dedicated to sleeping quarters, beginning right here in the third floor landing. this transitional space has the children's bedrooms on one side and the master on the other, making it the perfect place for the family to gather. and with a kitchenette and built-in tv, this space is the perfect place to kick back and watch a movie. the contemporary design and feel of the home

continue right here in the master bedroom suite. the elements of interior design and the southwestern exposure combine to give this room a warm and inviting feeling. no master bedroom would be complete without a spectacular master bathroom. this european spa-like bathroom features limestone tile, dual vanities, multiple shower heads, and an oversized soaking tub, making this the ultimate oasis. thank you for joining me today. i hope you enjoyed this exclusive peek into one of philadelphia's finest homes. by the way, the art in that home is reportedly one of the leading collections of contemporary art in the country. up next, we are showcasing high design in vegas. welcome back to "open house."
2:14 am
now the last time we met up with interior designer nicole sassaman, she showcased a real life barbie penthouse she designed in la. now she's bringing her eye for high design and luxurious details to vegas. take a look at her latest design project. hi, i'm nicole sassaman. welcome to one of blue heron's fabulous estates in las vegas, nevada. this home was designed to have a very indoor/outdoor zen-like feeling, with a very neutral color palette to go with the desert outside. so in order to bring it to life, i've added lots of color in the furnishings and accessories. this great room is an example of how this home is a perfect balance between organic and modern.
2:15 am
starting with a coffee table that's made of a tree root on into the fireplace, which is filled with driftwood. and outside there's so much lush greenery and water. we have walls flanked with stone. so beautiful, so serious. so then i come in and add a little bit of my sense of whimsy by adding a lot of color and picking beautiful accessories to create some fun. adding architectural lighting fixtures like these pendants is a great way to add to the decor, create a little light, and to really ground your space. this master bedroom was designed to be the perfect balance between modern and earthy. the caged rocks here are a great example of that. and the carpet adds such a nice amount of warmth. and it also does something else. it mirrors the wood on the ceilings and the walls. and then the furnishings are all rustic, right down to the bench at the end of the bed. and i come in, add a little splash of color
2:16 am
to create the perfect contrast and balance to the space. this outdoor space is an extension of the grand master suite. many of the materials from inside are carried on into the outside. but it's also a space where you can watch a movie, take a private jacuzzi, or a place to sleep during the famous indian summer nights that las vegas is famous for. here in the master bathroom, the freestanding tub was designed to make you feel like you were bathing in your own private rock garden. but my favorite part is the shower. you can either take a shower inside or step outside into your own private atrium and have a splash there. the indoor/outdoor nature of this space really creates the perfect backdrop for the library.
2:17 am
the bookshelves were designed to have a real little sense of asian vibe to them, and then filled with these old books, help to continue the rustic feeling in the space. and then we lined the shelves with some golden buddhas to keep it a little zen. and a splash of color makes for the perfect space to cozy up and read a good book. this home makes you feel like you're sitting on water. the surround sounds create a sense of tranquility and serenity, making you feel like you're in an oasis in the desert. the illuminated lights, the fire pits around, all create a sense of harmony with the desert backdrop. thank you for touring one of blue heron's masterpieces in the desert. i hope you learned how to combine rustic and modern with a twist of whimsy. there's so much more ahead on "open house." up next, grandeur meets elegance in upstate new york. we'll see you after the break. 2:18 am
welcome back. now we're heading to upstate new york to an enchanting home in bedford that's a true feast for the eyes. it's filled with unique architectural detail and decor that positively brims with color and light. this stately sanctuary is also surrounded by three beautiful acres, giving it the perfect balance between the stimulating and the serene.
2:19 am
hi, i'm alison dunnigan, and welcome to my wonderful abode. peace is an important part of this home. it's a foundation upon which this house was even built. so while the foundation of this house is peace and tranquility, it also packs a powerful design punch. the moment you come into this house, you immediately know that you're someplace special. this double height sun-drenched foyer gives you a real feeling of grandeur. the first thing that you see is this custom wrought iron staircase. it's the first of many ways this house brings the outdoors in. this living room is a combination of classical design, my love for spirituality, punched up with a little bit of glam. which, come to think of it, is how you could describe the whole house.
2:20 am
this living room has double exposures-- front, back-- sun drenched, filled with light, high gloss lacquer walls with a walnut french chevron floor. and double french doors lead to the back patio. this living space has a beautiful open flow, sort of like a loft in soho. and the adjoining family room has this wonderful cast stone fireplace that you can cuddle up near on cold winter nights. this kitchen is where everybody gathers. it's open to the family room, free flowing and filled with light. it's equipped with high-end european cabinetry and professional grade appliances. it'll make a chef out of anyone. when you walk into the formal dining room, you are transported into a world that is as glamorous as it is magical. it's a great room for family entertaining,
2:21 am
formal gatherings, and just hanging out. and in the summertime, we open up these french doors for al fresco dining. but the one thing everybody loves is this antique crystal italian chandelier. and what it represents to me is life's unexpected journeys and that we always come back home. this is the master, and i love it. after a long day, it's the perfect place for me to kick off my shoes and really relax. when i wake up in the morning, the beautiful view of the trees and the grounds feeds my soul. and the tray ceiling with intricate mill work adds a touch of glamor. and finally, the outside. i mean, talk about peace and tranquility. this is really it. three level acres with lush landscaping and specimen plantings. it is your own park-like sanctuary.

now we're on the hunt for a new apartment with manhattan broker wendy sarasohn and her friend and client, shaun. shaun is looking for a new home under $6 million, and is willing to consider places uptown for the first time. wendy has lined up two distinct properties for him to explore. will one of them fit the bill? there's only one way to find out.
2:24 am
hi, i'm shaun mattivi. and today i'm going to look at apartments with wendy sassamon. it's really nice to work with a broker who's a friend. i know she'll be showing me the best of what new york city has to offer. hi, i'm wendy sarasohn with the corcoran group. i met shaun a million years ago when i was shopping. today instead of looking for shoes for me, we're shopping for an apartment for him. shaun mattivi: i'm hoping to stay under $6 million today. but we'll see. well, hello there! hi! so glad to see you! mwa! long time, no see. i know. you look great! welcome to the san remo. shaun mattivi: oh, fantastic. it's so iconic. first, there's a wonderful area for dining, entertaining. shaun mattivi: beautiful. wendy sarasohn: beautiful kitchen. but you know, i'm not of the cookers. shaun mattivi: no. --[laughs] so i'd rather start over here. but i want to just have you appreciate every detail, 'cause everything is perfect. shaun mattivi: i love the herringbone floors. the crown molding is exquisite. wallpaper's not quite my style, but i do like it.
2:25 am
wendy sarasohn: ok. shaun mattivi: and i can't wait to see the rest of the place. well, let me show you. well, i just want you to appreciate every detail, because it's really, really brilliant. shaun mattivi: i love the light fixtures. love the built-ins. and you might not have noticed, but that's a tv that comes up. shaun mattivi: oh, very nice! wendy sarasohn: isn't that cool? then you have the view of the dakota. shaun mattivi: the view is incredible. wendy sarasohn: you want to continue on? shaun mattivi: yes, please. 'cause i wanted--there was some-- i want to see all of it. so this is the second bedroom. but it could be office, guest room. shaun mattivi: i like the idea that they've concealed the closet. that's brilliant. and then tell me about the fixtures over here on the windows. are these sterling? wendy sarasohn: i bet you're right, because you appreciate all that. oh, they're beautiful. so look, it's like a whole big hotel master bedroom suite. shaun mattivi: yes. very, very luxurious. and the crown molding's beautiful. love the arched door here. it's just got really nice volume in here. wendy sarasohn: closets here, closets here. over there, here, all there.
2:26 am
so there's tons of closets. shaun mattivi: very nice. i can fill all this. really? easily. really? very easily. i'm so surprised. [laughs] shocked, right? you've changed. not. not at all. wendy sarasohn: so this is all fabulous. but there's something else you have to see. can you guess? uh, hoping it's the master bathroom? you're right! you're so good! oh my, wendy. you did save some of the best for last. i always do. shaun mattivi: this bathroom is exquisite. the glass tile [inaudible], the mosaic floor, it's beautiful. yes. wendy sarasohn: the shower. yeah, that's room for a couple of people. and then some. wendy sarasohn: ok, i can see you're impressed. i want you to take a look, take your time. i'm gonna be in the living room. come find me when you're done looking. certainly. sounds great. good job. goodbye. shaun mattivi (voiceover): i'm very excited about this apartment. i have always thought about living uptown, and so this is my opportunity to possibly move uptown. i love this space. i like the light. but that master bathroom was particularly one of my favorite spaces.
2:27 am
i'm not too keen on the wallpaper in the foyer, but that's a minor change. the apartment is beautiful, but i'm still very excited to see what you have to show me downtown. well naturally, 'cause you love to shop! this is true. i'm not sure if he's an uptown boy or a downtown boy. so we're gonna head downtown next. sara gore (voiceover): up next, we'll catch up with wendy and shaun when they head downtown. but tell us what you thought of that san remo apartment on twitter with hashtag openhousetv. see you after the break. 2:29 am
we are back with wendy sarasohn and her client shaun, who is looking for a new apartment under $6 million. after flirting with the idea of living uptown, wendy brings him back downtown to view an apartment overlooking greenwich village's iconic washington square park. will the serene views of the swaying trees be enough to sway shaun? let's take a look. shaun, i am so excited to show you this next apartment. but it begins here in washington square park. look around.
2:30 am
oh, it's beautiful. what a great place to get started. wendy sarasohn: isn't it nice? and we got a good day! the weather's great! shaun mattivi: the weather is perfect. a perfect day to stroll through the park. wendy sarasohn: let's stroll, darling. shaun mattivi: [laughs] wendy sarasohn: the building's over there. shaun mattivi: very nice. so shaun, this apartment has this long, nice entryway with bedroom, bedroom, bedroom, all contiguous. shaun mattivi: very nice. kitchen. but what i really want to show you is the living space, because that's the highlight of the apartment. you have the living room with wood-burning fireplace. nine foot ceilings. shaun mattivi: yes, love that. love the beam ceilings. and look at this expanse. shaun mattivi: my gosh, it's incredible. i almost feel like i'm in a treehouse. now what about this wall here? yeah? would that-- is that load bearing? is that possible to be brought down? i need to check, but i have a feeling that it could come down. and we could find out. and then would you open up everything? yes. open it up, make it one big space. good idea. most dining rooms, as you know, are in the back and they're dark. this has four windows.
2:31 am
shaun mattivi: yes, it has exceptional light. i also like all the woodwork detailing, uh, the wainscoting around here. i really actually like the hardwood floors. i like the rusticness of it. wendy sarasohn: did you see the wine cooler over there? ah, very nice. let's pop one open. i think we should wait for the closing. that's probably a good idea. so let's just explore. let's go look at the rest of the apartment. sounds good. i love the second apartment. the light is great. the entertaining space is perfect for my needs. i think i'd be very happy here. i love shaun. i've loved him forever. so today didn't feel like work. it felt like i was spending the day shopping with a friend, and that's my favorite thing to do. how do you compare the two apartments? they're both exceptional apartments, as you well know. i like the fact that both have great light, they both face the park.
2:32 am
i think uh, these two will be the options. really? really. how would you like to proceed? well, i'd like for james to come and see both the apartments first. wendy sarasohn: great idea. so uh, once he comes to see them, we can proceed from there. perfect. we'll make a date and you'll call me. all right, sounds great. perfect. thanks [inaudible]. thank you for a great day. thank you. so what did you think of both apartments? we'd love to hear from you. share your thoughts on facebook or twitter at openhousetv. if you want to see nicole sassaman's vegas design again, or that rare mansion in philly, just head to openhousetv.com. that's all for now. we'll see you next week on "open house."
