shrine. it is just a short walk from here where the pope will deliver mass before 25,000 ticket holders on september 23rd. so getting around will not be easy. with lots of road closures expected and an impact to metrobus and rail service. so later today in just a few hours, in fact, ddot and metro will brief us on flartheir plan their strategy to make all of this work as smoothly and safely as possible. this metro will be exit only. after mass, entrance only. this station is one of the smallest on the redline. it can accommodate about 5,000 riders per hour, but it is also the closest to the national shrine here. so it will be quite busy on that day. that is the latest live from northeast d.c. into the brookline station. back to you.

marlboro. that's according to prosecutors. a surveillance camera at the neighbor's house caught the entire thing. detective newell was a 24-year veteran of the police force. a father of two is now dead. detectives are looking for who killed him. someone targetted the young father. hes with shot and killed in the southern marketplace shopping center at 6:00 last night. it's in oxon hill on the d.c./maryland line. one bullet hit the wall of the chinese restaurant next door. no one was hurt. right now at the live desk we're watch drag mattic pictures coming out of newsroom in california. the wildfire is burning everything in its path. you saw the charred car, there's a truck. one person has died. a lot of worry and concern. entire towns evacuated. the fire has spread way beyond wooded areas, destroying about 400 homes and buildings in

middle town lake county. firefighters just cannot keep up with this one. it is too fast. imagine 60 square miles it has burned in 12 hours. back to you. >> thank you, kristin. it is 6:05. in decision 2016 bernie sanders is making two important campaign stops in virginia. the first at the university in lynchburg. later in the day sanders will be joined by local leaders at the prince williams fairgrounds in melissa. that event kicks off tonight. today the county clerk of kentucky who refused to issue licenses to same-sex couples is back to work. davis's office will now be monitored to make sure marriage licenses are being issued. students will head to class this morning aet the new stafford high school. the school was originally supposed to open last monday. the first day of school was pushed back because it doesn't have the occupancy permit for

the new building. county inspectors have now given the green light for the school to open and some parents are concerned about the week delay and how students will make up that time. well,oday we will find out how long the redskins will be without star receiver desean jackson. he went out of yesterday's game with a hamstring injury after kirk cousins did that. yeah. overthrew a pass in the first. the redskins wanted to prove this year's team is different. the fans didn't get that result. after the skins got a 10-0 lead, the dolphins came back to win it, 17-10. the redskins host the rams fy weekend coming up. they are a popular toy that most of us remember riding as a child. we'll show you why you may want to think twice before you buy your child a tricycle. and brand-new problem at eastbound powder mill road at 95. chopper over that crash. we're hoping it's going to open shortly. at 66, a new crash causing some

new this morning los angeles airport officials are trying to figure out how two planes managed to collide at the gate. take a listen now to the pilot explaining the situation to confused passengers. >> essentially we stopped short of the gate because the pointing gates wasn't what was expected and the aircraft behind us continued to push back from their gate and the two aircraft met at the same point at the same time. thank you. >> so basically they had a bit of a fender bender there. the alaskan plane bumped into the united airlines plane. no one was hurt. the outbound plane made its to its destination safely.

preserving the memory of uva sophomore hannah graham, that was the goal of this event in charlottesville yesterday, one year from the day the 18-year-old disappeared. jesse matthew faces charges in her murder. charlottesville marked the anniversary of her death with attenti fresh attention to her life. volunteers from the organization helped save the next girl gathered about a block away from the spotlight's security camera that last caught hannah gram graham on september 13th. they're worried the community will only remember her as a statistic. >> we want to get out here and raise awareness. hannah graham was a human being and full of life. we want people to realize that. >> we'll tell you about any developments in jesse matthew jr.'s case. now to a developing story this morning, this one out of japan. take look at some of these

images in the newsroom. you see the volcano erupting. the eruption sent vulcan uk rock into the air, but it doesn't look like there was any lava flow. there aren't any homes near the volcano, so there weren't any injuries or damage reported. police in phoenix kojts to look for whoever's responsible for a series of freeway shootings. police did arrest three people over the weekend who admitted to hitting cars with rocks. police say they're not connected to the shootings. there have been reports of 11 shootings in the region. no one has been killed or seriously hurt. 6:17 now. right now the family is still searching for a missing girl from greenbelt. keira richardson is 15 years old. she suffers from seizures and does not have her medicine with her. she was last seen on friday night on breezily court. if you have any information, call the police.

these families lost their homes over the weekend. take look at the damage. the fire ripped through 30 homes. this was in the tim pl hills area. prince george's investigators do not know how the fire was started. they say everyone was able to make it out safely. european ministers will meet to try to come up with a solution for the migrant crisis. germany saying it cannot handle all the people seeking asylum in that country. border controls in the country were put back into place yesterday. >> there are two new programs designed to help ex-convicts adjust to society. d.c. mayor muriel bowser will host the announcement. this is a flop-up. we expect the two initiatives to focus on training and professional development. check this out. incredible video.

they received a distress call in bliss bris toll bay. he reported engine failure. the helicopter safely rescued all three men on board. the first day of school is postponed yet again in seattle as the teacher's strike enters its second week. teachers are demanding pay increase and longer school days. they've also gone six years without a cost-of-living raise. they're looking for a court order. because of a strike three of its snow days are gone. the commissioner is considering short ping the breaks or adding days to the end of the school year. american airlines is trying to find out why the wrong plane was flown from l.a. to hawaii. it's a big mistake and a violation of faa regulations. the flight left on august 31st. american airlines flew a newer

plane that wasn't certified to land over the water. passengers were dropped off in hawaii and the plane was taken back. imagine how terrifying that would be. >> at least they owned up to it quickly and it won't happen again. if your kids have a tricycle and probably most of you do, tricycle injuries are sending thousands of children to the e.r. this year. >> more than 9,000 trike-related injuries occurred in 2013. they were the top cause of toy-related deaths in 2012. the american academy of pediatrics saying most children don't have the balance or coordination to ride a trike until they're around 3 years old. and i will tell you, a lot of my friends talk about this and we have found success with the balance bikes. they're low to the ground and the geometry and the way they're built -- >> treated like a bicycle, not like a toy. maybe wear a helmet.

today the national bike program turns five years old. to celebrate there's a biking convenient happening at 7:30 this morning in arlington. everyone is meeting at the crystal metro station. they say it's in five years people have used their bikes more than -- 10 million times. pretty impressive. next year a volunteer group called adams morgan main street wants to be back in chard of adams morgan day. it went smoothly thanks to business leaders and members of the community. usually volunteers put on the event but the "washington post." over $30,000 and it says the organization's leader mishandled the funds. happening today president obama is expected to push his plan for free community college. he's heading to des moines for a town hall with high schoolers and their parents to discuss college access and affordability. education secretary arnie duncan

right now we're getting in significant updates in the killing of a kentucky state trooper. in the past few minutes we found out who the trooper was. trooper joseph ponder was new to the force. he graduated from the training academy just this past january. he was only 31 and from kentucky. now, we're also just learning what police say happened. this is coming directly from kentucky state police. trooper ponder stopped a car on

later today. derrick. >> reporter: we already heard from protesters who plan to show up to this meeting. it plans to occur later this evening. it's a meeting of an ad hoc review meeting. it's over the death of john gear back in 20e 13. but protesters want to bring up another issue. this is the case of 37-year-old natasha mckenna. she was being transferred to alexandria to face charges of saulti assaulting a plj there. while detained she was tasered four times. all of this while tackle and restrained. the commonwealth attorney has rule thad this death was accidental and cited factors of mckenna's mental condition, stress over the struggle, and being shot.

but the protesters are not happy with that as are others in the county. they have put out on social media they want to have their voices heard. in the meantime at the jail the sheriff has ordered that the use of tasers be suspended temporarily while the investigation ensues. we're live in fairfax county, "news4." a former youth hockey coach accused of possessing child pornography heads to court in fairfax county. timothy bodenheimer working as a coach for a travel team. investigators say all the boys bodenheimer contacted were hockey players. ice not known, though, if those players were those that he coached. police say he used instagram and snapchat to contact them. in maryland another soccer coach is nation charges for human traffics. he used france websites to attract prostitutes and use

their services online in the u.s. he's a soccer coach and the own over aan academy in germantown. police say his accoucountses ar part of his soccer acadeacademy police say lucy green was the woman involved in a crash yesterday. a stretch of the g.w. parkway was closed for several hours and investigators have not said what caused that crash. the family of malik thomas is searching for him. police found a man dead inside his car. someonead shot him. police have not positively identified the body so they don't know whether thomas is the victim. the mother told us the two spoke just hours before police found the car. >> the last words i actually said to my son was be careful.
