i'm kristin wright live in new carrolton where a neighborhood is on edge after a man was found dead near that bus stop in the middle of the night. this morning children waited for the bus stop on 85th avenue in new carrolton steps from where a man's body was found. this father walked his kids to the stop, that's when he found out about the violence so close to home. >> this is shocking. it's really shocking. >> the man's body was found in the grass, right behind a metrobus stop. pieces of glass are still scattered on the ground and the bus shelter is missing. a pane of glass. police spent all night here. >> makes me feel unsafe. if this kind of thing can happen around here, i doubt we are really safe. >> reporter: it's a neighborhood

classmates are remembering him. that will come up at 11:30 this morning. a massive cleanup effort is underway in utah. a fuel scale search is on for several people swept away in flash flooding. five people are missing. eight are confirmed dead including several children and mothers caught in raging floodwaters that washed two cars downstream in a town along the arizona-utah border. look at this. the incredible video images shows the desperate effort to pull people out of harms way. three were rescued. others made it out on their own. this massive search and rescue effort involves at least seven agencies. and there's also a flash flood warning happening right now in that area. >> all right. thank you. professors at delta state university in mississippi will hold a vigil for one of their own. ethan schmit was murdered by another professor yesterday.

police say they tracked the suspect, shannon lamb down, then he killed himself. lamb was a suspect in another murder hundreds of miles from there. classes are canceled at the school today. and this morning you'll get a chance to talk about the exposing of laurel regional hospital. the plan will be presented in about a half hour. the company decided to close the hospital and open a walk-in center for patients. news 4 broke the story on twitter. county officials say the maternity ward will be the first thing to go on october 11th. hundreds of workers are losing their jobs. new details on a story we've been following, a kentucky state trooper shot and killed on the job was trying to help the man who shot him. the trooper stopped the man who turned out was driving on a suspended license as the trooper was trying to find him somewhere to stay with his two children, he took off. the officer was shot by the man during a second stop on monday night. the suspect was found after a massive manhunt.

right now a group of advocates is closing in on the arlington memorial bridge. the marchers started walking from selma, alabama last month. this is part of the naacp's journey for justice. they're marching for issues like equal pay and education rights. later this afternoon the nearly 1,000 mile march will end on the steps of the lincoln memorial. they're expected to reach the memorial bridge in about an hour. don't panic if you see lots of police activity in falls church later today. police are conducting a training exercise this afternoon and into the evening. it will take place at a home on riley street. there are signs posted to remind you about this. the exercise won't cause

jennifer hudson, gloria estefan and aretha franklin will be performing at events in new york city and philadelphia for the pope. an afternoon concert will be held in madison square garden next friday. aretha franklin will hit the stage in philadelphia. opera singer and washington native denise grave also perform at the kennedy center in honor of pope francis. as the pope visit gets closer, websites selling tickets to see the pope will now stop selling them. many of the 80,000 free tickets are available for sale by

there the bus fell off an overpass and flipped on to its side as it fluit plunged to thed below. one girl was killed at the scene. another girl died at the hospital less than an hour ago two other children and the bus driver are at the hospital with serious injuries. all of this happened as high school students headed to class. we're working to find out what caused this accident. all of our families continue to grieve and cope with the loss of adam ward and my love alison parker. but in the 2 1/2 weeks since their murder, i can tell you the healing has begun. >> chris hearst was off since investor parker killed alison parker and ward last month. hearst was dating parker. he said they were in love. >> i know the answer to all what we all must do. it's to profess love, not hate.

in your first 4 traffic in d.c., d.c. water doing emergency road work in the petworth neighborhood. traffic is not impacted now but there could be some water service issues in the area. construction of an intersection in ashburn is starting soon. a massive project was just green lighted. this is to build a new interchange at troute 7 and belmont road. the project will cost nearly $50 million and will take about three years to complete. police in arizona are increasing the reward for information on a string of highway shootings. the shootings started about two weeks ago a person of interest is in custody but the main culprits are on the loose. $50,000 is being offered for information. new video this morning. it shows an unruly passenger who

caused a flight from miami to chicago to be diverted. it happened last night. we're learning that the plane landed in indianapolis after the woman struck a member of the flight crew. natalie martinez has the latest. >> reporter: the unruly passenger had others on american airlines flight 1284 reaching for cell phones. ryan wood captured this video as the woman was being hauled off by indianapolis airport police. >> just a lot of screaming, yelling. i thought it was a kid crying in the back. it ended up being she was kind of being belligerent, drunk on the plane. >> passengers tell us an in-flight announcement was made. >> they said everybody get to your seats, buckle up. nobody move. >> witnesses explained how the woman spewed nonsense and profanity. >> you're good. >> most of it was profanity. and just, you know -- just very disturbing.

school are indeed wearing blue today. this is a show of solidarity and sadness. one of their classmates is gone. 16-year-old john martin dreggi died yesterday on the railroad tracks in the 15000 block of barnsville road. he was hit by a northbound amtrak train around 4:45 in the afternoon. he was walking with two other teens when for some reason he went on to the tracks. investigators are trying to find out why. it happened near the boyds m.a.r.c. train station, and it impacted commuter rail service. shortly after the incident, students took to social media to offer condolences to his family and to encourage the wearing of the blue in his memory. grief counselors will be at the school today. this is the 71st incident where someone has been hit by a train in our area since january of last year. >> all right. thank you. right now police in new carrolton, maryland are working

to find out how a man died overnight. someone found his body near a bus shelter on 85th avenue. this is not far from annapolis road or 495. news 4 went to prince george's county at beginning of the investigation. police are not saying anything about the nature of the man's death. developing right now, hungary's new enforcement at the border. we just learned that guards arrested three men for trying to cross over from neighboring serbia under a wire fence. the first arrests under the new laws that are designed to shut down the swell of migrants. but it's also left a pile of people with no place to go. army troops could shore up the border more. this morning the government declared a state of emergency in two areas. some 200,000 refugees from the middle east, asia and africa have reached hungary so far. >> thank you. jury selection is expected to wrap up in the murder trial of a man accused of killing a

d.c. police detective. antoine james is charged with killing joseph newell in 2013. james shot his stepfather several times after the two argued about mowing the lawn at their home in upper marlboro. newell was a d.c. police officer for more than 20 years. >> we have gone through so many reports, so many meetings, how can they do that? >> disbelief lingers today after an emotional and sometimes angry exchange over the use of police force in fairfax county. if you missed last night's discussion there will be another opportunity for you tonight to voice your concerns. a lot of people are specifically challenging how police treated a mentally ill inmate named natasha mckenna. she died back in february. officers repeatedly tased her in the process of moving her to a different jail. >> we heard the police and the commonwealth's attorney say that what happened to natasha was an accident.

killed, and five are still unaccounted for as of now. what what happened is that a heavy rain storm hit the area, a total of an inch and a half to three inches of rain in less than an hour. it hit in the mountains behind me, sent rivers through the streets of this community. what happened with the people who were caught in the flood, we're told, is that they were watching the floodwaters when another flood came from behind and swept them into short creek. search efforts began right away. overnight the eighth body was found. this morning people in this community holding out hope that they will be able to find some survivors among the five who are still unaccounted for. but it's a terrible day here for people who live in hilldale, uta utah. the calendar says september, but wait until you hear how many people are shopping like

more than 32 million americans say they have already started their holiday shopping. 4 million have checked everything off their list. a quarter of people expect to be finished by the end of november. experts say if you're on a budget, you are more likely to get a head start to take advantage of layaway programs. those let you make purchases without running up credit card debt. for the first time a group of medical experts says taking an aspirin every day can protect against more than heart attacks and strokes. the u.s. preventive task force says there is good evidence that a daily dose of low-dose aspirin may prevent colon cancer. the effects are best for people in their 50s and 60s. the daily dose is not a treatment plan. they say the effects do wear off for patients with existing heart risk factors.

at the white house, the university of connecticut women's basketball team is visiting the president. it's set to get underway. i guess they're there and waiting for the president. the huskies won the ncaa women's title for the third straight year this year. the president is honoring them with the invite today. he welcomed the men's champion duke team to the white house exactly a week ago. a maryland man became the first competitor on american ninja warrior to conquer all four stages of the course. >> jeff britain from maryland did a great job getting through the nearly impossible challenges.

warmed and dry. this will continue into friday. more humid over the weekend. here is the extended outlook for the papal visit next week. right now it is looking partly sunny each day. the pope arrives on tuesday afternoon. we'll be here wednesday and thursday. maybe a little more humid. there's a low chance of any rain. stay tuned. all right. thank you. talk about a late-night craving. that's what may have hit this little bear cub who wandered into a small town pizza parlor. employees at the colorado spring shop say they walked in on the cub last night face first in tubs of icing. they think he got in through an open door. parks and wildlife officers came and got the cub safely out of the restaurant. they say the cub will go to a rehab facility because it was malnourished and had a hurt paw. >> i'm glad he got help. that's probably what i look like in the middle of the night. head first in icing. >> i could be there, too. >> that's it for new 4 midday.
