at the leisure world retirement community, two-story building on glen eagle drive near the bank of america there if you're familiar. you can see where the fire ripped open the roof in a section of that building. we've also seen firefighters climbing into and out of some second-story windows. we haven't been told of any injuriy ies or what started thi but jackie bensen is on her way there to bring us an update when she arrives. first on news 4, dozens of senior citizens have been forced out of their homes because of a big business deal involving an elite public school. the same school sasha and malia obama attend purchased the home in upper northwest. that mean the resident there is have to move out. we're talking to some of them right now. we'll have a live report in 15 minutes. now to the emotional reaction today from the family of a local teenager hit and killed by an amtrak train. john dereggi jr. died yesterday on the tracks in boyds,

maryland. his parents can't imagine life without him. >> reporter: this is chris gordon in boyds, maryland, standing along the tracks where 16-year-old john martin dereggi jr. yesterday was hit and killed by an amtrak train heading north en route to chicago. >> when i heard the news yesterday i couldn't sleep all night last night. i had to come down and just look at the scene and show my respects. >> reporter: all new at 5:00, why john dereggi jr. and his two female companions were walking along these tracks yesterday afternoon. i'll have that far of the story coming up. back to you. >> all right, thanks, chris. we're now 12 hours into a homicide investigation and it is all centering around a metro bus stop in prince georges county. this is where the body was found in the grass early this morning on 85th avenue in new carrollton near an apartment complex. parents who live nearby say they're worried and nervous as they sent their kids to school. investigators tell us they don't

think this was a random shooting. right now a spotsylvania family is making arrangements for a family member killed in a drunk driving crash. 25-year-old issamantha was kill when her vehicle was hit head-on. the man in the vehicle had already hit two other vehicles and were switching places behind the wheel. new at 5:00 we'll hear from some of the people who were first on the crash scene. an update now to a story that halted the rush hour for thousands of people. we've confirmed the man who pulled an emergency brake on a train had been separated from his child. we told you about this incident on the green line back in july. now metro transit police have wrapped up their investigation. they say the man who was seen running off the train was separated from his child at the plaza station. metro says it reunites these kind of things all the time and they say there's never a reason to pull the brake.

guardrail killing a 17-year-old girl. a 14-year-old later died at the hospital and the driver and a few other students are seriously injured. the ntsb is looking into this. pope francis can expect a special greeting from president obama when he arrives in washington next tuesday. the president will meet the pontiff at his plane when it lands at andrews air force base. that's a rare move. presidents almost never meet foreign leaders when they arrive at andrews. there will be a formal welcoming ceremony on the south lawn of the white house before the pope and the president meet privately. meanwhile, as security kicks into high gear in advance of the pope's visit, word of a foiled plot against him. morecoming up in about 25 minutes. could there be a shakeup coming in the presidential race? well, a new national poll shows retired neurosurgeon ben carson is surging among republican primary voters. cbs news and "the new york times" conducted a poll which shows carson's support rising from 6% in july to 23% now.

donald trump still leads the race. while carly fiorina trails northeast most of the other candidates she's gone up four points since the last poll. the thousand-mile journey for justice march is wrapping up in d.c. today. our news partners at wtop took video as they marched over the memorial bridge. the march started in selma, alabama, last month. the marchers are -- they're marching for issues like equal pay, rather, and education rights. the march culminates with speeches at the steps of the lincoln memorial. turning to storm team 4 now. doug told us yesterday that we were going to start to warm up from that very chilly monday morning and sure enough, doug, it's warming up out there. >> it's going to warm up quick after a very cool start earlier today. temperatures have warmed up, and once again, that's where we're going to be seeing over the next couple of days, too, so back to summer-like temperatures, however, the humidity is not going to come as well. look at the low temperatures this morning.

this afternoon, a small community in utah is reeling. flash flooding has killed at least nine people. some of them children and their mothers. at least four people are still missing. >> an suv and a van were carrying 16 people home from a park in the area when the vehicles were swept away by a powerful wave of water and debris. as for what caused the disaster, storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is live. what caused it? >> that video is devastating. out there they can get the flash floods when they do come on through they produce just tremendous amounts of rain and can cause widespread flooding. here is the radar history there over this part. it happened in southern utah right on the arizona border. this happened yesterday evening. we go back in time, i can show you it's continuing to rain, scattered. this is the remnants of an old tropical system that came through right there north of page, arizona, where the

several stories developing right now at 4:15. fast-moving wildfires are devouring hundreds of homes in northern california. thousands of people are been forced to run, but this afternoon, firefighters are hoping conditions can help them gain ground. friends, colleagues, and students are sending their condolences to the family of a man described as a star professor. dr. ethan schmidt was shot and killed at delta state university in mississippi yesterday. new today, we have a clearer picture of who his killer was.

a news anchor goes back to work several weeks after his girlfriend was murdered on live television. we have the emotional message he gave to his viewers. news 4 was first to report that sidwell friends, the private school in upper northwest, is buying the senior citizens home next door. news 4 broke the story on twitter hours ago. he joins us with what this mean for the senior citizens now living there at washington home. mark? >> reporter: that's right. behind me is the washington home. it's been on this location in upper northwest off wisconsin avenue for generations. there are more than 130 seen wror citizens who call this their home. right next door through those trees is sidwell friends where the president's daughters two to school. sidwell purchased this entire plot of land here. they plan to expand their campus and means by december of next year the 130 or so senior citizens living here must find somewhere else to live. here's what the directors of the washington home told us about the move.

>> it's bittersweet for them. this is their home. we also recognize that we have time to be able to help find them in new home where they can be able to live. >> reporter: now, this move is going to be difficult on multiple levels. some of these residents here are mechanic cade medicaid dependent and restrisk stricts where they can go. coming up at 5:00, you'll hear from a daughter of one of the residents here and tell you in her own words this news is simply devastating. in northwest, mark segraves, news 4. and now your storm team 4 forecast. >> that beautiful thing in the sky that we call the sun is going to be shining not just for the next couple of days but maybe for the next week and maybe even longer than that. we are entering a very dry stretch. it has been very dry over the past couple of weeks and even the past month. right now across our region, 84 tree degrees. that's the current temperature. we're at calm winds. plenty of sunshine as i mentioned with low humidity.

it's nice, it is comfortable. 82 fredericksburg. 81 in winchester. 78 in martinsburg. beautiful all the way around here on our tuesday. and as i mentioned, this is going to stick around. no rain to talk about. storm team 4 radar is not going to be getting much work. where are the clouds? boston to raleigh, d.c. to chicago, down to st. louis, almost no clouds at all. and that's really what this pattern is here. what we have is a dominant area of high pressure that's just sitting over the southeast and all over the portions of the mid-atlantic all the way up toward new england. the jet stream pattern dipping way back down to the south. now, this is great news for california. they are finally getting some much-needed rainfall with some of those fires but what it does for us is takes these storms, these areas of low pressure, well away from our area and what that means, we are warm and dry for the next week at least. i was just looking at the two, even three-week trend here, and we are going to be extremely dry. we need the rain. we're already 3 inches below average since august 1st. i think that's only going to be increasing as we move on through the next couple of days. one other thing it gives us,

though, very nice nights. 51 degrees in frederick tonight. 55 in manassas. 63 d.c. 58 in fredericksburg. waking up to a great start on your wednesday. high temperatures up a little bit. nice and warm over the next few days. 887 wednesday and thursday. 88 friday and saturday. sunday comes a change. tom kierein is back at 8:45 with the temperatures as they go right back down. guys? just mentioned folks in california could sure use some of the news. one fire has now wiped out 700 homes in northern california. the valley fire has grown to twice the size of san francisco. it's only 15% contained. and now we're learning more about an elderly woman killed in the blaze. she had severe multiple sclerosis and couldn't get out of her home in time. more than 20,000 people have evacuated the area. other wildfires continue to burn in washington state and oregon. the college professor gunned down in his own office is being remembered as a star on campus at delta state university in mississippi. dr. ethan schmidt taught

american history and was well published in his field. he was shot and killed yesterday by another delta state teacher who killed himself as police closed in. the university president says he knew the murdered professor very well. >> i met him in that corner two years ago when he and i were knewbies on this campus. i just came here as president. mistook him as a student at first. he's youthful in his appearance and actions. he's a wonderful fellow. >> the killer has been identified as delta state geography professor shannon lamb. police say lamb also killed his girlfriend at the house they shared and left a note apologizing for her death. he also called 911 and confessed. about 45 minutes later he killed professor schmidt. lamb killed himself last night as police closed in. the evening news anchor at wdbj has gone back to work in roanoke for the first time since his girlfriend was murdered live on the air. several weeks after reporter alison parker and photographer adam ward died, chris hurst had

a message for his viewers. >> i know the answer to what we all must do, it is to profess love, not hate. to love one another and to love strangers. alison and adam projected a love and peace into our world that can never be taken even if they were taken from us. >> hurst says during his time off the air he's heard from people all over the country, a lot of them survivors of other shootings. another ban against confederate symbols. this time a virginia high school is telling students they can't display the symbol on cars parked in school lots. the new policy at christianburg high school went into effect this year. the ban is apparently part of a contract that both students and parents have to sign in order to get a permit to park on school property. well, imagine you got a winning lottery ticket, go to cash in, only to be told you can't have your money. well, it's happening right now to some lottery winners in illinois. two of them have filed a lawsuit against the illinois lottery.

we've got a giant panda alert from the national zoo. we received a new picture from the zoo and i just put this up on my facebook page. zooworkers say mei xiang's cub weighs nearly 2 pounds and his body markings are becoming more distinct. that's eight times more than he weighed at birth. they also say he sleeps with his paw over his eyes, which is a favorite snoozing position of his dad and his sister, bao bao. oh, no, so close! he did it. he did it! >> he's from maryland and became the first competitor on nbc's "american ninja warrior" to conquer all four stages of the course. jeff did a great job getting through the nearly impossible challenges. great wasn't good enough. he went home empty handed. the rock climber, isaac, was

students at clarksburg high school in maryland wearing blue today. in memory of john dereggi jr. he died after being hit by an amtrak train in boyds monday afternoon. initial information shows he and two other teens were walking along the tracks at the time. >> right now detectives are trying to figure out who killed a man at a metro bus stop and why. the body was discovered in the

grass right behind the stop on 85th avenue in new carrollton. one window of the bus stop was shattered. it's not clear if the shooting happened there. two high schoa school bus c. we'll have another update in the next 15 minutes. breaking news in just from alaska where three people are dead in a plane crash. state troopers say a float plane crashed just after taking off from a lake about 200 miles from anchorage. we're told this plane belongs to a luxury fishing lodge in that area and all three of the people who were killed on board are from auout of state. seven others on board are being flown to hospitals in anchorage. we're a week away from prop francis' visit to the u.s., you know security is kicking into

high gear. >> indeed it is. nbc's keir simmons has words of a plot by an american teenager to target the pope. >> reporter: this morning confirmation that a 15-year-old boy arrested outside philadelphia last month is accused of planning an isis-inspired attack on the pope. reports say the plan had been to target pope francis during his history-making u.s. tour. those reports, joint fbi, homeland security bulletin saying the assault would include multiple attackers, firearms and explosives. that bulletin reportedly says minor obtained explosives instruction and was spreading them through social media. in new york, officials are already gearing up for an unprecedented security task. >> ied explosion from a backpack. >> reporter: the launch screens at many police headquarters s w showing many high priority concerns during an exercise activity. >> this event is going to be the largest security challenge that the department and city have ever faced. >> reporter: the papal visit coincides with the 70th

anniversary of the united nations which will bring 170 of the world's leaders to the city at the same time. >> we can say safely we've literally never seen something like this before, and we welcome it. we embrace it. we look forward to it. >> reporter: this latest arrest illustrates how isis social media is reaching young people. even inspiring them to attack the pope while he's in the u.s. as with the vatican, new york authorities say they know of no credible threat against the pope. reports say that the plot by this young man was, it seems, aspirational in nature, and the vatican is saying that it still does expect that the president will meet the pope when he touches down in the u.s. for the first time. back to you. tracking developments in europe's migrant crisis. hungary is now officially enforcing tougher rules on refugees trying to only into coe country. up until several hours ago

thousands of people a day were coming into hungary. now that a new fence is nearly finish the country's borders are effectively sealed except for the trickle of people being allowed in a few at a time. the migrants are only allowed to enter if they're willing to register with hungary's government. the second day of jury selection is under way in the murder trial of antoine james. the court is trying to seat 14 jurors to hear the case that aandedly involves a domestic dispute that turned deadly. tracy wilkins takes a closer look at the allegations. >> reporter: antwan james is standing trial for the murder of his father, police officer joseph nuwell. he was at the family's home of january 2013, living there more than a year when his stepfather asked him to assist with cutting the grass and doing yard work. james refused which led to his mother yelling at him. he reportedly responded by saying, "oh yeah, watch this"

and allegedly went outside and shot his stepfather 15 to 18 times. he then ran from the crime scene, leading to an all-out manhunt that included his stepfather's colleagues at the d.c. 6th district police station in northeast. >> the same dedication that he put forth in his cases, these guys behind me and prince georges county and the rest of mpd are going to put forth in trying to bring this guy in and apprehend him for this horrendous crime. >> reporter: james turned himself in the next night according to police. there is video of the murder that shows him on a stepladder outside the home when james shoots him. he falls to the ground and james shoots over him shooting him several more times. newel was pronounced dead on the scene. the veteran detective left behind two teenage daughters and three other stepchildren. tracee wilkins, news 4. the sterling community donated nearly $7,000 to help cover funeral costs for one of its students. dan danny miranda was a sophomore at park view high school.

he was shot and killed as he was walking to the bus stop earlier this month. three young men have been charged in connection with his murder. now, miranda was living with his aunt and uncle here. they wanted to send him back to his native el salvador to be buried so the sterling united methodist church partnered with park view high school to set up a fund. visit nbc washington for information if you're interested in helping. for four decades, his was one of the most recognizable voices on radio. bobby bennett known to many as the mighty burner has passed away. bennett started his career as a deejay on wol radio, that's where i met him as a young radio newscaster in 1977. the soulful music bennett played and the catchy rhythmic rhymes he made became a staple on black radio stations here and across the country. he died of respiratory failure at his home in florida at the age of 72. though gone, bobby bennett, the mighty burner, won't soon be forgotten by his friends or fans. and now your storm team 4 forecast.

teacher and that woman told police she thought another driver was coming into her lane during rush hour this morning so she swerved and hit the school bus. the bus driver then swerved or tried to. he ran through a guardrail and then plunged from that overpass. two students on board, a 14 and a 17-year-old, both killed. witnesses say they tried to help but there was little that they could do. >> it was about seven, eight people ran over to try to help whoever's on the bus, but the way the bus hit, everybody was pinned in it. >> two other students and a bth bus driver were seriously hurt but expected to recover. the bus does have seat belts. we don't know yet if the students with wearing them or if day would have made a difference. back to you. >> thank you very much, wendy. a small religious community is reeling this afternoon after at least nine members were killed.

elon musk. a new ceo was told to take it easy after he fainted during a presentation. he was at an auto show and the scary moment was caught on video. getting up close and personal. these kayakers were getting some pretty good views of a humpback whale feeding off the coast of california, but the whale that jumped from the water then slammed into kayak on the year down and nearly crushed the two hen in it. luckily everybody's okay. the kayakers were with a tour company that posted the video to youtube. well, the hazing turned deadly and now prosecutors have started filing charges against members of a college fraternity in new york. >> the charges were filed in pennsylvania from a freshman was

allegedly knocked unconscious and died during a hazing retreat. our reporter asked residents if this legal action is too harsh. >> reporter: five fraternity members of pi delta psi including former national president have now been charged in the death of baruch freshman michael deng who died two years ago in a hazing ruche yule e ii poconos. 32 other members expected to be arrested with charges ranging from conspiracy to murder. >> there's a variety of different levels of responsibility and involvement from individuals who were actively involved in the assault, to individuals who lied to the police, to individuals who had hid evidence. >> reporter: investigators say deng was blindfolded and weighed down with a 30-pound book bag while fraternity members knocked him unconscious. they say it took an hour before anyone called for help, time they shay could have saved his life was instead used to try to cover up what happened. >> i don't think it's too harsh.
