david culver here at the live desk following developments out of charlottesville with jesse matthew. a judge officially charged matthew for death of morgan harrington. harrington disappeared in 2009 after leaving a concert in charlottesville. crews found her remains a few months later. matthew faces life in prison for each of the two offenses and he's already convicted for a 2005 sex assault in fairfax and he's the prime suspect in hannah graham's murder. matthew will keep the same attorneys for both cases, but prosecutors as of now have no plans to combine the trials and i did speak with morgan harrington's mother tonight and you will hear why she and her husband dan wanted so badly to be in that courtroom today and that's when i join you ahead at news 4 at 5:00. >> thanks, david. talk about an economic boost to the city. d.c. officials sealed a new deal for a basketball arena this

facility open in two years. i'm tom sherwood, news 4. we are getting our first look this afternoon at a guy who police say robbed a bank in the busy section of arlington. surveillance shows the man handing the teller a note and while waiting for the cash, he appears to yawn. we are told he ran out of the t.d. bank in claire endon after getting the money, but dropped the money on the way out. he had dropped the money, but he says the robber kept going. it's no surprise that we're getting for the pope francis' first visit to the united states, and the pope himself says he's looking forward to it. at the end of his weekly general audience today in st. peter's square, pope francis asked for prayers for his mission to the u.s. and cuba and he says he's preparing for the trip with, in his word, great hope. the pope leaves saturday for cuba and arrives in washington next tuesday. mail delivery may be affected in areas where traffic

seven people were hiking at zion national park in utah when a flash flood trapped them in a narrow desert canyon. officials have now confirmed five of those hikers are dead and two are still missing. the hikers died monday at the same time a deadly flash flood killed at least 12 people on the small community on the border of utah and arizona.

we'll have a live report from the zeen in tscene. a firefighter is calling the scene biblical. they are slowly gaining ground there. the wildfire in california is 30% contained and however it scorched 67,000 acres and consumed 600 homes. meteorologist tom keir en has more. >> this is from last week near kings park in the central sierras and look at the smoke into the san joaquin valley to fresno. this fire covered 150 square miles. it was started by a lightning strike on july 31st and that fire is still going. it's been going through all august and all of the way into september. getting some beneficial rain are for those fires in northern california coming through right now all across northern california, this is welcome

david culver with you from the live desk. the man accused of igniting a fire at the cvs in baltimore during the freddie gray riots has pled guilty to arson. raymon carter was seen going into the cvs with other looters on april 27th. he attempted to open the safe behind the pharmacy counter and 45 minutes later he's seen going into the corner of a store where paper products were stored.

just reopened and we're learning more about the salmonella outbreak that shut it down. the d.c. health department gave the go ahead for fig and olive to reopen at the city centrecomplex downtown. the health department says the likely source of the outbreak was the restaurant's truffle fries and mushroom croquettes. at least 60 people got sick after eating there and the health department is looking into 150 other possible cases of salmonella poisoning. are you loving september? a lot of us are and we're getting spoiled, doug. how much longer is this great stuff going to last? >> i think the spoiling will continue as we move on through the next couple of days. we have the area of high pressure over us that just does not want to go archway. you just showed it. plenty of sunshine, bright blue skies and low humidity, it does not get better than this. winds out of the south at 3 miles per hour and notice the temperatures around the region and 81 mart insburg and 80 in pa

the man accused in the charleston church massacre is offering to plead guilty to escape the death penalty. that word came out of a pre-trial hearing for dylann roof. he killed nine people while attending a bible study. the trial is set for next july. two people have died from legionnaires' disease. health officials still don't know the source of the outbreak and both people who died were elderly with underlying health conditions. people in southern utah are trying to come to grips with the deaths of more than 12 people in deadly flash floods. some of them were swept away in cars and five were hiking in zion national park. leann gregg is in colorado city arizona, but the danger may not be over. >> reporter: third third day the

search continues for a 6-year-old boy lost after two vehicles were swept away by floodwaters killing three women and nine other children. a frightening scene caught on video. >> oh, no! >> one of three survivors fled to get help, but it was too late. >> in an instant our families are gone. >> it's a horrific event. it was totally out of our control. >> reporter: city and state officials coming to grips with the reality of the loss and devastation. >> this is as much a fatality as any in the state. >> reporter: zion national park when flash floods struck monday. the bodies of four of them, three men and one woman were recovered tuesday. about 25 members of the utah national guard are helping with the efforts along with law enforcement, emergency rescue teams and hundreds of volunteers. one of them talked about unique challenges of searching for victims. >> it's very muddy. it's slippery and some of the

in the murder for her slain husband. it was a very emotional day and just moments ago the jury heard a dramatic 911 recording when antwan's brother called police moments after that shooting happened. the phone taken away by his mother who told the operators that her son had just killed her husband. court documents say this all started in april of 2013 after joseph newell asked his three stepsons to help with yardwork. in court on wednesday, antwan james' mother bernadette newell testified that antwan was the only one who refused. she told the court she yelled at him and said, quote, if he didn't do the work he had to leave. bernadette told the jury antwan snapped saying, quote, he jumped up and said you're doing it because of him and said watch this, and he was out the door. the deputy sta a
