in the hospital in critical condition. megan mcgrath started working this investigation before the sun came up this morning. you have some new information, right? >> reporter: well, aaron, when the last hour or so we got an update from prince george's county police, they say they do not believe this is a random crime. investigators believe it is likely drawing related. behind me here, you can see the door to the apartment, this is where one of the victims was found dead. it is now a sealed crime scene. the search is on for the person who fired the deadly shots. an suv and a sedan towed from the parking lot. police spent the night going in and out of this ground floor unit at the gateway apartments. several items were taken from the scene in evidence bags. >> when we came in, we couldn't go in the house. everything was blocked off. they had the front blocked off, too. >> reporter: police got the call for shots fired around 10:00 thursday night. when officers arrived, they

found a woman dead inside the apartment. a man was found shot outside the building. people who heard the commotion last night were reluctant to talk on camera. off camera they told us they heard three gunshots. one resident says she heard a woman screaming as those shots rang out. >> the man who was shot, he was taken to an area hospital. the update we learned he is still listed in critical condition. back to you. >> thank you. we have new information for you about what's next for the mother of two missing children. this morning a judge sneent katherine hoggle back to 60 days more treatment. a mental competency report says she does not understand the legal process going on aid round her. hoggle may have killed her toddlers more than a year ago. they disappeared in september of 2014. hoggle faces child negligent and abduction charges in addition to counts of hindering law enforcement. a judge will consider the case again around thifing. on capitol hill, both

a developing story this morning on the wildfires burning in california. cooler temperatures are moving in, however the valley fire is still only 35% contained. the bute fire is half contained this morning. five people have died. today we expect to learn more about the actions of an army sergeant facing desertion charges. bowe bergdahl may take the stand. the general who interrogated bergdahl after he returned to the u.s. is also expected to

testify. bergdahl was held captive for five years before he was exchanged for several guantanamo detainees. the marine corps is expected to request that women not be allowed to serve on the front line of combat. this has ignited debate over whether navy officials can prohibit women from serving. no final decision has been made from pentagon leaders, but officials say the army, navy and air force are expected to allow women to self in all combat jobs and will not ask for any exceptions. he has one of the most famous clocks in the country right now. what he's finally going to be allowed to do with it

a high schooler in texas who was arrested for taking a homemade clock to school. however ahmed mohamed is not back in school today. his family says he's not going back, not to that school. a teacher thought his clock was a bomb and called police on him earlier this week. last night his father led a rally of ahmed supporters outside the school. >> the world knows the story, but repeat it, and we repeat it until justice is done. >> the school says it stands behind the decision to call police. officers didn't charge the teen with anything. police also said that he can pick up his clock from them today. some virginia students are supposed to be serving their suspensions after bringing confederate flags to school. why are they showing up for

two dozen high schoolers in southwest virginia are serving their first day of suspension for fighting their school's ban on the confederate flag. but more students plan to rally today. the school says students can't have that flag on their clothes, lockers or cars in the school's parking lot. >> they're trying to get rid of it and not any other flags. >> it's a year of fights that occurred in 2001 to 2002. the fights were racially charged and motivated and the confederate flag was used as a

symbol. >> the flag's use came under heavy debate after a gunman killed nine people at a historically black church in charleston, south carolina. after that happened, photos came out of the gunman posting with the confederate flag. a friend of dylann roof, joey meek, is accused of failing to report a climb. the 21-year-old said roof stayed with him before the shooting. he also reportedly told the associated press that roof complained about blacks taking over the world. meek is expected to make his first court appearance later today. there is a presidential forum happening just hours from now. it's in south carolina. it features all of the republican candidates from earlier this week. donald trump has generated big controversy since that debate. we want to show you his response to the first question at a rally in new hampshire last night.

for president right now. the entire event is drawing comparisons to john mccain's rally back in 2008 when senator mccain corrected a woman who said president obama was an arab. he said they simply differed on fundamental issues. one of the most powerful women in america is speaking at today's meeting of the congressional black caucus. both attorney general loretta lynch and national security adviser susan rice plan to speak at the washington convention center today. it's the organization's 45th annual legislative conference. dr. rice will speak to lawmakers at about 2:30 this afternoon. in the last hour, congresswoman eleanor holmes norton helped to introduce the synthetic drug act. they says dealing with these drugs is negatively impacting local law enforcement, emergency service personnel and health care providers. amelia? >> high temperatures today in the mid to upper 80s.

laurel. 45-year-old michael palumbo was killed when the bus made a left turn and his truck slammed that it. the people on the bus were not badly hurt. close to 60 passengers had to wait for a back up bus to pick them up. joseph ponder will be laid to rest today. he was shot and killed sunday night. it was supposed to be a routine traffic stop but the suspect drove away. after a high speed chase, the suspect fired shots into the trooper's car killing him. the shooter was killed after brief standoff with other officers. ponder had been on the job for just nine months. if your weekend plans have you using the metro system, you might want to hear this metro says track work will affect three of the six lines tonight through sunday. the red, blue and yellow line trains will run every 24 minutes. metro will open early, 6:00 a.m., on sunday. for customers trying to get to

the navy/air force half marathon. an exciting development on sunday for commuters, a $140 million new transit center will open at 7:00 a.m. in silver spring that facility will be next to the silver spring red line metro station in montgomery county it has spots for more than 30 buss. more americans who were raised catholic are leaving the religion. 43% of americans raised as catholic are no longer practicing catholics. three quarters of american catholics think the church should allow artificial birth control. half of catholics say the church should also recognize same-sex marriages. check out the new way metro is commemorating pope francis' visit it has a new smart card sleeve with the pope's picture on it and the date he's visiting. metro wants those cards preloaded before he gets here. hundreds of thousands of people are expected to crowd metro

this is breaking now. the family of a florida college student who died after hazing incident a couple years ago reached a settlement with florida a&m university. robert champion died after band members beat him on board a bus parked outside of an orlando hotel in 2011. a university spokesman says the university, florida a&m, has reached a $1.1 million

penalties on doctors who do not try to save babies born alive during abortions. an area school student with cerebral palsy inspired a community. yesterday we told you about 19-year-old ibrahim. he is in desperate need of a new wheelchair. his teachers along with hundreds of friends threw a fund-raiser to help out. and since that story ran on news 4, they hit their goal raising $25,000. the campaign started with a bake sale, then a pep rally, an online video and a go fund me page. they also spread the word on social media with a hashtag about the chair. >> a power wheelchair would allow him to be independent. because he is 19, the ability for him to get around in the world beyond just watkins mill. >> even though the goal has been reached that fund-raiser will

this breaking at the live desk. a man missing in terrible flooding in utah has been found. he did not survive the disaster. he disappeared near the utah/arizona border during severe flash flooding that you probably remember. this brings the death toll to 20, and a 6-year-old boy is still missing. after watching her son strike another player in the head with a helmet, the mother of a new jersey high school football player is speaking out. anita mcduffy says her son is

being treated unfairly. he's been kicked off the football team and suspended from school at this point. the video you see here shows the boy on the lyndon high school football team using a helmet to hit a player on the other team in the head. mcduffy says she will stand by her son. >> he said his hand got stuck in the helmet. i believe my child. i'm not saying he's right or wrong. >> the boy who was hit needed ten stitches in his head. no charges have been filed against the other player. it is estimated that 1 in 4 deaths in the united states will be caused by cancer. a ride for cancer is this weekend, and one woman is desperate to conquer this disease for the two most important people in her life. dawn miller, thanks for joining us. >> thanks for having me. >> tell us how you got involved and tell us for whom you will be riding. >> i got involved when my husband was diagnosed with cancer.

we asked but officers have not said anything about a motive about the gunfire which happened last night. a judgep;]sz ordered more treatment for a mother who police think killed her two toddlers more than a year ago. news 4 was in court this morning. the judge questioned cath thin hoggle's ability to understand the process. another potential government shutdown is looming and that could mean problem fors shutdown is looming and that could mean problem for for thousands of government workers. tracie potts is standing by with what could hold up this particular deal. >> reporter: we're waiting to see where congress may be headed with this. there are at least 40 conservative republicans right now who say they won't vote for funding. they'll let the government shut down if these funding bills i clued money for planned parenthood. they're concerned about abortion

this is breaking now at the live desk. the friend of the accused charleston chuh shooter has pleaded not guilty in court. joey meek is charged with lying to authorities and hiding information about the crime. meek is accused of knowing what dylann roof was planning to do this past june. roof is accused of killing nine people at that church. that historically black church in charleston this past june. he's charged with murder. meek's bond has been set at $100,000. a new kind of treatment is helping kids living with asthma. it's called asthma coaching. parents are trained to help

other moms and dads look for signs and symptoms. the goal is to be proactive with this condition. sides whose parents were coached had three more weeks a year of symptom-free days. >> you don't realize that it's a chronic illness. and you have to stay on top of it every single day, every hour, every minute. >> for kids on medicaid, the coaching knowledge helped cut er visits for asthma by 40%, and drop hospital visits by 60%. you may notice something different when you run your afternoon errands, businesses will transform street parking outside of their buildings into temporary public spaces called parklets. lettal pa a little parks. arlington, d.c. and montgomery county are participating. it's part of the goal to get a natural space within a ten-minute walk of all residents. this is a san francisco-incised event.
