>> three days. the count is on. good morning. hope you're having a great sunday morning. we're coming up on the 9:00 hour. i'm adam tuss. >> and i'm angie goff. good morning. welcome. >> what can we expect? >> fresh change blowing in on a cool breeze. much of the region's temperatures are down into the low and mid-60s now. the wind is beginning to pick up. coming out of the north and west, they's ushering in the lower humidity. here's the storm team 4 tower camera looking to the north. way off on the horizon is thedown town bethesda. clouds are going to be drifting east and pulling away right now. not picking up any rain. there's a little bit of ground clutter on the radar. we're all dry. temperatures now this morning haven't budged much since dawn. near 70. farther to our north and west,

north and western suburbs are in the mid-60s. look at oakland, maryland. only 48 degrees. a look at this dry pattern and how lock it's going to be lasting and the papal visit forecast. that's coming up in this half hour. >> thanks, tom. a big day for folks in montgomery county. the silver spring transit center finally open to the public. i thought i'd never say that. "news4's" derrick ward is live there with early morning action. good morning, derek. what are you seeing? >> good morning. a lot of folks are coming by and saying where are the phfences? they're officially open for business. they're about five years behind schedule. $50 million over budget which includes about $21 million to make sure this concrete could hold up for the bus traffic.

they're ready. there are 30 bus bays here. that includes metro, ride on, university of metro and shuttle buses. you'll also notice fewer buses on the streets here and that will ease traffic through here. you know what? commuters are definitely happy about this. >> it's wonderful, man. i actually like it because it took a while for them to build it, but throughout all the years i've been watching it. now this morning i finally get to use it. >> one of the things that folks want you to know is that the first two levels here on colesville and the level that takes you here are for buses only. but here that's where there are kiss and ride spots, 13 minutes if you're waiting for someone, also car sharing and taxis as well. this is probably the last little piece of this mosaic that's downtown silver spring. we'll have more. coming up, we're live in silver spring.

derrick ward. back to you. >> thanks. right now, an estimated million cubans are packed in evolution square watching pope francis deliver sunday mass. we want to take you there live. this is the biggest event of his trip to cuba. just moments ago in have gnaw. later he'll meet with raul and fidel castro. jay gray is there as we visit this historic visit. >> reporter: his presence has electrified the nation. thousands lined the roadways in havana. cheering wildly, flavoring flags, welcoming pope francis after his arrival saturday. >> reporter: we'll receive him. the love and fervor the cuban christians, thousands that we are. >> reporter: thousands will pack the revolution for the mass.

mansion toward the cathedral. very, very busy. a mel more miami service will be held for a young woman killed by a drunk driver. samantha sumter was 25 years old. sheriff's deputies say they received several cars that the car that was driving next to her was on brock road. officials were trying to catch up to that car when it hit two other vehicles an then sumter's car head on. witnesses say the passengers were hanging beer out of the car and yelling. the service stashlts in on two hours. police arrested two in an early morning homicide. marcellus green was found shot debt after 1:00 a.m. in the morning. the police then chased don manpower rico pew d steven knight and then they found ingram shot and killed. this is the same place a man was shot while sitting on a metrobus

last month. so far no arrests in this case. d.c. police offering a $25,000 award for anyone le information leading to the arrest and conviction. out of the california this morning we're getting new numbers shown for the devastation caused by two wildfires. 1,000 homes have been destroyed so far. 6,400 others are in its path. over 100-degree temperatures and winds are preventing the progress of getting these fires under control. looking in the day ahead t maryland department of culture will begin spraying for mosquitos. you'll see them on gordon avenue and main street as well as sandy. there are six no-spray zones. those are places you can go if you're worried about chemicals. we posted all of this on our nbc

welcome back at 9:10. two children shot by a drive-by shooting. one has died. one 9, one 11. two adults were also shot. they don't believe it's random act. a man accused of killing two adults and their baby girl. police arrested 22-year-old

alexander hung tran. they were renting the upstairs part of the home while tran lived in the basement. a yacht goes up in flames with four people including a 6-year-old boy on board. take a look. you can see the boat here totally engulfed in flames. yikes. this happened off the coast of galveston, texas. luckily another boat was passing by. the other boat called the coast guard. the boat burned for an hour and sank but everybody got off inside. the yacht owner says the fire started in the engine. coming up from the metro to the pope to the transit center. we're covering a wide range of topics with the general manager. also, taking a live look outside, it's going to feel a lot different. the fresh

welcome back at 9:14. perhaps no organization in our area has been under the microscope these days more than metro. from safety issues to organizational changes, there's been plenty to talk about. and things don't get any easier this week as the pope comes to town and expected to prernlt some new challenges. joining us to talk about all of it in studio, metro's manager

jack. thanks for coming in. what should we be telling people about this whole three-day period because this is happening during a workweek as well. >> yes. this is more than an inauguration in the sense that it's a lot of activity on a work day, a school day, and we expect most businesses to be open. we anticipate riders should attend early or if you're going to work and park in a facility, know that it's going to fill up hours earlier than normal. >> normal rates? >> normal parking rates. we'll be running peak hour services from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. through wednesday and then through to the start of the events. >> we've got a little commemorative smart trip you can pick u. piece can get this tomorrow. so obviously it's going to be a big week for the pope.

silver spring is ready. what can you till them? >> they have the opportunity to get 800 to 1,200 feet closer to the streets. get people off the streets. we're excite and look forward to a long life at the transit center. >> i think the big thing there is most people promote doble know but montgomery county built this and gave it to you guys. how are you going to convince people it's safe to use when you're running big buss on this thing? >> first off, we've been running buses for two or three weeks and are prepared for the opening. our engineers have been participating in the project from the beginning.

we've expressed our concerns. over time they may take more wear and tear and there may be an expense to that. >> got you. you've been at the metro line as long as i've been covering it for a while now. >> that's right. >> how would you characterize things now at metro? this is a tough period. i don't think there's any shieg away in, right? >> i don't think there's a tough period. we've been through a lot. in 2009 we created major issues and concerns. we've been working hard on the rail system since that time to get things -- improvements made, maintenance done that has been lacking over the number of years that continues to work. we think that by 2017 the majority of any back long of maintenance will be taken care of. every incident brings something new to life. as you know, we've got oversight

from the mta, and other organizations that we're happy to have with us and we're respond those recommendations also. >> a lot of those organizations are criticizing you guys. they have plenty to say. what would you say is a fair criticism right now? you get a lot of it but what's fair to say about metro right now? >> first of all, we carry 1.1 million people every day. people onto want to talk about the rail system but the bus system is carrying 450,000. metro access, 5,000 people. exclusively with no concerns or news stories. on the rail system, again, we have limited time to do minute tense on the system we have people, we have parts. you know, we're trying to get out there. trying to provide unfortunately some inconvenience to passengers to make needed repairs. every time we find something new, we try to attack it as quickly as possible. the system is safe and we're trying to minimize the number of

disruptions they have. >> has it gotten to the won't where the system is so large you've found it hard to keep up? ? we've got issues of capacities. what are you going to do to address the crunch that people are feeling right now? that i want to get to and from work? >> reliability is the eastbound. if there's no issue on the track with the ridership levels it should be fairly convenient. we're trying to mined my, you know the defish ensichlt we have 748 new railcars coming in. some of those are in service. as more as manufacture come in, we have less. they'll have a major impact on the reliability. we think that will keep the customers more satisfied. >> you can tell people that things are going get better. >> they'll get better. >> i want to thank you. the acting manager jack reek roy in studio. thank you, jack. we've got a busy morning coming

field of sunflowers. that photo posted by jen johnson. you can postthem on my facebook page and follow me on twitter and share there. you can see the clearing sky to the west. the ta'uer cam looking to the north and a bit of a blustery wind through the rest of the day. right now winds are gusting to around 15 to 20. they may gust up to 20, 25 miles an hour through the afternoon as the sky clears out. back down to the mid-70s by late afternoon. good weather for tailgating at fedex field this morning except that wind's going to be a bit blustery. we'll be in the low 70s. then kickoff at 1:00. it ought to be in the mid to upper 70s. if clouds clear out, the wimtds will begin to diminish by later this afternoon and overnight tonight. then tomorrow morning a lot of clouds around to just near 60 degrees. during the day on monday, afternon highs right around 70.

all eyes on docnald trump a he appears on "meet the press." trump did not correct that supporter when he called president obama a muslim. he did address the way he responded via twitter at the appearance in iowa. >> they wanted me to speak up in favor of the president. you do think he's going speak up in favor of me? why do i think he's not? >> trum. has surged ahead of his republican rivals for weeks but some question whether or not his bubble will soon best. >> also on "meet the press," chuck todd will speak with ben carson and john kasich. that's coming up this morning.

in today's top stories silver spring transit center is finally issue. we'll have a live report comeling up on "news4 today." two wildfires in northern california have destroyed 1,000 homes. 6,400 others in the fire's path. five people have died. the fire is 50% contained now. time to check your honor forecast iemt go doing be a little more breezy and cool. >> a bit of a change. let's check in with meteorologist tom kierein. he's live on the weather deck. what's it like out there, tom? >> i'm feeling that breeze coming in from the north where i can see blue sky off to our west and to our north. but right in washington, still a bit of cloudy ps.

the tower camera is a couple of hundred feet above the terrain there. in the foreground you can see friendship heights with the sun lit and a shaft of sun breaking through the clouds. we'll continue to see the clouds cruising off to the east and becoming partly to mississipost this afternoon. right now in shenandoah valley in the upper 50s. right now around 70 around the bay. the low humidity is coming your way. and if you plan on heading out for a morning run or any kind of outdoor exercise here by late morning will in the low 70s. early afternoon will be in the low 70s. 3:00 p.m. with lots of sunshine. just a few clouds come u through. the wind gusts may be coming at 15 to 20 miles an hour. this evening the wind dust diminish.

that is the pope, pope francis in havana, cuba, saying mass right now. over a million have gathered to watch him, some of them out in the rain. right now they're pretty much consecrating the eucharist and about to deliver communion, going through that whole process. the pope there making his appearance in cuba. >> his arrival, very, very warm when he arrives in havana. prior to this he asked everyone to join him in praying for his trip to cuba and also the u.s. saying on twitter he's very

active online to say he needed everyone's prayers. you can see the cutaway to the crowd. very happy to be there despite the rain. a lot of them with umbrellas. this is a moment in history they did not want to miss. >> havana is a long way from itsly or the vatican. so for the pope to come to your home city or home country, that is a special thing, especially when you consider how many atlantics there are in cuba. after he's in cuba for the next couple of days, he's headed here. a lot going on with the pope at this mass, which is so special. here's a crowd shout of all the people gathered. you can see the crowds out with the umbrellas up out in the rain, obviously fanning themselves. this is amazing. the pope has come to see you. you don't have to go see him.

with possible cerebral palsy. >> reporter: seth has been in foster care since infancy. >> he's been in care for 2 1/2 years and he's making slow and steady progress. >> reporter: he loves katy's music and was anxious to join in. >> seth is the most cheerful playful baby. >> reporter: those who work with him say seth is making progress and it's hoping he may one day be able to communicate better and improve his motor skills. >> they're hoping to increase his motor skills and keep them and hopefully eventually walk with an asus tivs device. >> reporter: his fullest potential, the doctors are hopeful. we think with his spirit and spunk he might surprise it. >> the doctors say keep open the possibility. >> cute little guy there, right?
