it is the second leg of a three-city visit today for the pontiff in cuba. >> and tomorrow it's our turn. the pope will visit three cities over six days. but it all starts right here in dc. this trip is coming with a terror warning. >> a document obtained by nbc news shows law enforcement is worried terrorists may impersonate police officers, firefighters, or emts. pennsylvania state police distributed a memo telling officers to be on the lookout for attackers pretending to be first responders. officials fear terrorists could use false i.d. cards and uniforms to enter secure areas. philadelphia's police commissioner addressed the bulletin just moments ago. >> there are no credible threats towards the pope's visit here in philadelphia or new york or washington, d.c. for that matter. since 9/11, that's been something that we pay attention to whenever we have a high profile security event. >> here's how his schedule shakes out. pope francis will celebrate mass tomorrow morning at a shrine in

bay that drew the pope here. for years he's been urging the u.s. to close the prison facility there. but his homily this afternoon made no mention of politics. instead he focused on the catholic faith. he blessed the city from the hill of the cross. his final stop this evening will be in santiago for a second mass. then francis will turn his attention to the u.s. jay gray, nbc news, havana. metro is experiencing big trouble on the eve of the pope's arrival. another smoke incident interrupted train service today, having people wondering whether metro can handle those big crowds. transportation reporter adam tuss is live outside rfk stadium. adam, what's being done now? >> reporter: service has still not fully been restored to the blue, orange, and silver line. some heavy equipment continues to come in here.

crews ton to try to make a fix to this substation. earlier today this is what it looked like here, a big plume of smoke above the tracks. firefighters had to approach this situation very carefully, because they had to go into a power substation here. and they didn't want to spray down that substation with water and damage a bunch of other equipment in there. metro says of course it understands, with the pope coming, lots of out of towners also coming here, this is not the best time for a situation like this. >> we never want to see this on any day. but we also are fully aware of what's happening this week. and that puts all the more pressure on our power folks and on the personnel who will be coming in here to try to make this right. >> reporter: now, metro says it also knows there's a nats game tonight. they're playing the orioles. they are advising you to drive to a green line station and take the train in from there. back to you. >> thanks, adam. the schedule for the i-95

first at 4, an alexandria man is accused in this morning's shooting in a home in the hybla valley area. police say two men had been in argument. the name of the victim has not been released. the fbi is looking for two men who disguised themselves and pulled off a major jewelry heist in rockville. they're offering a $5,000 reward. the men walked into the store on veirs mill road on tuesday. one had a fake beard, the other was covered in a robe. they got away with more than $100,000 worth of jewelry. republican presidential candidate ben carson now under heavy scrutiny. the calls for him to drop out of the rate is growing louder. why the campaign says he was misunderstood. our papal visit

that is dominating the republican race for the white house. >> we are tracking new reaction right now to ben carson's controversial statements about the islamic faith. today the council on american islamic relations called for every presidential candidate to repudiate carson's views. >> and we ask mr. ben carson to withdraw from the presidential race because he's unfit to lead, because his views are in contradiction with the united states constitution. >> ben carson's comments came yesterday on "meet the press." moderator chuck todd asked whether a president's faith should matter to voters. >> if it fits within the realm of america and consistent with the constitution, no problem. >> so do you believe that islam is consistent with the constitution? >> no, i do not. i would not advocate that we put a muslim in charge of this nation.

the national shrine of the immaculate conception right now. >> reporter: i've got to tell you, the folks here at the basilica are getting closer and closer to being 100% ready for the pope's arrival. just take a look behind me. every day you see something new. what you're looking at here is the missionary who will be canonized during that mass. with the pope's arrival comes road closures. you've seen warning signs that road closures are coming. near saint matthew where the pope will be on wednesday, no-parking signs are already up. rhode island avenue northwest between connecticut and 17th will be closed. d-dot says to be prepared for several intermittent closures around the church on m street between connecticut and 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. wednesday. many folks we spoke with today say while they're excited about the pope's visit to town,

wisconsin governor scott walker is dropping out. he plans to hold a news conference around 6:00 this evening in madison, wisconsin. apparently sources are telling nbc news that the reason is primarily money. walker has seen his popularity plummet in recent months. he was once a front runner. but a recent cnn poll finds him drawing the support of just half of 1% of gop voters. we'll follow this and bring you more of what he has to say at 6:00. >> that's shocking. >> it is indeed. hours after the historical moment at the emmys, social media is still buzzing. >> siviola davis won an emmy. billy bush from "access hollywood" has more. >> you've just got to be

he lived to be 101 years of age. we've learned the man who created the town of reston, robert e. simon, has passed away. simon started the planned community in 1964 with a vision, innovative architecture, and open spaces, and gave it its name by combining his first initials, r.e.s., with the word "town," reston. it has since become a blueprint for many other communities. simon is also credited with starting community associations. he passed away at his home this morning. again, robert simon was 101 years of age. back to you. >> reporter: i'm mark segraves in northwest washington. just two years ago, police and the mayor held a press conference to say all the

more than 85 apps have been compromised and the company is removing some of the most popular apps in china. they say hackers tricked chinese app writers to include mal-iicis code. this is pretty unusual. up until now only five malicious apps have ever been found in the app store. oxford house is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. it's a nonprofit drug and alcohol recovery program that started with just one house in silver spring. it now has 1900 houses in 40 states. it's helped thousands of people. the group credits that remarkable growth to nbc's meredith vieira, who did a report on oxford house on "60 minutes" in 1991. today they thanked her in a special way. >> that video and what you did for us affected everybody.

her live-in boyfriend, michael mccarthy, killed the girl one evening in may because she wouldn't go to bed and he believed it was her time to die and she was possessed by de-mondde momons. >> she found mr. mccarthy standing over bella with his hand near her abdomen. when ms. vaughn looked at bella, her head appeared to be swollen and her face was gray. >> reporter: investigators say they wrapped the child in her zebra blanket and placed her in the refrigerator of their do dorchester apartment. nearly a month later authorities say they dumped her body. >> they dumped her body in the water. >> reporter: but mccarthy says he had nothing to do with bella's murder.
