step of the way. starting now. our city is getting worldwide attention tonight. right now, pope francis is resting at the vatican embassy ahead of a packed schedule here tomorrow. >> our reporters are all over the area tonight. covering the pope's moves and the crowds that follow. we're going to begin with mark segraves, he's along the ellipse which is one of the places in the district that you might catch a glimpse of the pope even if you don't have a ticket. >> there will also be big screens along the west side of the capitol and at the washington monument as well as a whole lot of security. mark, what's it like down there right now? >> reporter: well, it's a beautiful evening. traffic is moving. there's plenty of room on the mall. it looks nothing like what it will look like tomorrow when the pope is actually across the street here, across the ellipse on the south lawn where he and president obama will host about 15,000 people tomorrow morning before the pope goes into a private meeting with the president. then after that, about 11:00,
6:01 pm
the pope will hop into the popemobile and the popemobile will drive down constitution after knew and that will be the best opportunity for most of you to actually see the pope. roads will be closed. security will be tight. every time the pope moves, a throng of security and press will move with him. his day begins with a 9:00 a.m. meeting at the white house. 15,000 people are expected for the south lawn event. fences have gone up to help control the crowds. porta-potties are in place as well. there will be some public viewing areas like the sidewalks near st. matthew's, but the biggest crowds are expected to line constitution avenue for the parade. the popemobile is expected to leave the south lawn of the white house about 11:00 a.m. he'll head down 17th street, up constitution, and then up 15th street back to the white house.
6:02 pm
then the pope will head to st. matthew's for a private service. after that it's back to the vatican embassy and finally about 3:30 the pontiff heads up to the basilica and the campus of catholic university. where thousands of people who are able to get tickets will watch the pope say mass. so with all that movement of the pope, you can expect rolling road closures all day tomorrow, all across the city. something we're used to, but not on this wide of a scale. and if you are planning to come down here to constitution avenue for the pope's parade, the gates to the mall open up at 4:00 a.m. and you need to be here before 10:00 a.m. that's when they'll shut it all down and you'll have to stay in place until the pope goes by. >> mark segraves, thank you. from the moment the plane touched down on the tarmac, the welcome here has been electric. a huge crowd joined the first family to greet pope francis as
6:03 pm
he landed this afternoon at joint base andrews. that's where we find news 4's chris lawrence who continues our team coverage. hi, chris. >> reporter: hey. yeah, when pope francis arrived here at joint base andrews he was greeted by dignitaries from the president, the first lady, their daughters, vice president biden and of course local dignities like muriel bowser, governor larry hogan, virginia governor terry mcauliffe. but the people who probably were most excited were some of the kids who were here. we know at one point as we watched pope francis walk down the entranceway onto the tarmac, there were four kids that came up to greet him and hand him a flower. those were four kids that were selected by the vatican from local catholic schools right here in our area. two of them were from sacred heart including 12-year-old girl named jocelyn aquino.
6:04 pm
one was from southeast d.c. a fourth student was from st. phillip the apostle out in camp springs, maryland. again, a first, third, fifth, and seventh grader got a meeting of a lifetime so to speak. also, just a little bit behind the scenes, i noticed as we were standing here during all the setup, literally 20, 30 minutes before the pope arrived, they were putting up banners on some of the risers where the crowd was. they were white banners and they said, "jesus loves us without limits, walk with francis." then when the pope got here we noticed those banners were not there. i talked to some of my sources here and they tell me that that order came from the white house who said this is a government function, not a religious one, and so they had those banners taken down. again, it has been an eventful day here at joint base andrews. why colleague, tracee wilkins, standing just outside the gates. tracee, what has it been mike what what you've seen? >> reporter: it's been a lot mike what you were feeling inside of there.
6:05 pm
here we had an opportunity to get close to the people who had their cameras on ready and could not wait for the pope to go by. we keep talking about the rock star atmosphere. that's exactly what it felt like. after he drove by, we saw what people are calling the francis effect. >> we were all so excited about this great man who's reaching out to every single person. >> reporter: it's called the francis effect. and it's all over this group of strangers who are now arm in arm. >> he's a wonderful man and he believes in world peace and unity of all men. >> reporter: they gathered outside joint base andrews. some of them for hours to capture this moment, and boy, did they get their moment. >> he saw us. he looked at us. he waved to us. >> reporter: as this was the excitement outside of the base, imagine what happened inside. >> we're very excited. we've been waiting for a long time, haven't we? >> we just drove about three hours to come down to witness the arrival of our holy father.
6:06 pm
>> reporter: ticket holders who had the opportunity to be on the tarmac wanted to be a part of history and were hoping to receive a blessing. from this pontiff. >> i am catholic, and there's just something about this pontiff that brings such peace and he just seems to be a very progressive pope. and he gets it. >> he's been embraced for his simple message of love and reaching out to those people that are disenfranchised and living on the edge, and i think he just wants to spread that word of love and mercy to everyone. >> reporter: what was amazing about this is that even though folks didn't have tickets, they felt like they were still a part of this experience and as you heard there, people who say that they saw the pontiff wave at them, and that's worth everything for these folks. reporting live outside of the base, tracee wilkins, jim, back to you in the studio. >> thank you, tracee. right now the mope is inside the vatican embassy in northwest d.c. he arrived there just about an
6:07 pm
hour ago to crowds of waiting schoolchildren. our jackie bensen is along massachusetts avenue now with more on the pope's first stop here in the district. jackie? >> reporter: well, jim, you heard tracee talk about rock star pope, it sounded like a rock concert here. and that's because there were hundreds of schoolchildren from catholic schools all around d.c., maryland, and virginia. they've been selected to be here when the pope arrived, and, wow, did they start cheering when his motorcade began approaching the papal nunciature here in northwest d.c. now, the pope did exit his fiat. he waved to the children and they were absolutely thrilled. some of them were from the embassy of argentina who had come here especially to greet the pope with flags and kerchiefs marking where they were from. now, what i can also tell you is about a tweet this evening from d.c. mayor muriel bowser shortly
6:08 pm
after the pope arrived. i think we have the video of it. it says "on behalf of 660,000 d.c. residents, welcome pontifex," the pope's twitter name "to our great city." with the #popeindc. the pope is inside for the rest of the evening meeting with various people. take a look, this is the security. believe me, this is just a small fraction of it that is here and designed to ensure the safety of pope francis and everyone with him during his stay in our nation's capital. live in northwest, jackie bensen, news 4. back to you. now take a look at a live picture of the basilica of the national is shrine of the immaculate. this will be in the spotlight tomorrow. the first ever canonization on u.s. soil. during the mass pope francis will declare father junopera

6:16 pm
when your work will be seen by millions of people, businessowners like lee herman say it's more of an honor. >> leaves, roses, and it's a lot. a couple truck loads. >> reporter: herman is the owner of palace florist and it will be his arrangements that will decorate the altar where pope francis will celebrate mass. he says to be selected, he had to apply to the basilica, but they were already familiar with his work. >> we've done the flowers for the basilica of the national shrine for about 15 years. >> reporter: herman says that helped in the selection process. it's a similar situation for international limousine service. the owner, richard cane, also had to apply, but he says because his company drove pope benedict's delegation in 2008, he was given the same opportunity for pope francis. >> they had a good vibe on how we handled washington for them with pope benedict so they've asked us to expand our services. >> reporter: so that means these shiny mercedes and buses driven by kane's employees will carry
