4:26 from joint base andrews and he's on his way to jfk and for his second leg of the tour of his united states and people are anxiousry awaiting his arrival. >> our jim handly live in new york city overlooking st. patrick's cathedral? >> hi, handly. >> check out this backdrop. this is st. patrick's cathedral in midtown manhattan and from the ground it looks like a fortress and we'll tell you why, and this is where the pope will have his only, vent. evening prayers and the vespers as they say in the catholic church. jfk, they're running 10 to 15 minutes behind and he was early to washington and we're hoping he can make up some of that time in the air and when he gets on the ground he'll have to go straight back in the air in one of the marine 1 helicopters there on the tarmac waiting to take him on a 40 to 45-minute

tour of the island. he'll get to see this son of immigrants and the statue of liberty, and the 9/11 memorial and also the entire skyline. at the airport, we have hand waiting a jazz band from the brooklyn high school who performed for pope benedict when he came to new york and also on the ground, 200 invited homeless guests. of course, this pope, his passion is the poor, the homeless and helping those struggling in life. let's talk about security and that is the real story here. what we saw in washington, the past couple of days pales in comparison to what he's facing here. chaos and an historic effort by law enforcement headed up by the secret service, of course. 6,000 additional police, 37 miles of barriers and normally bustling streets in manhattan have been blocked off with jersey barriers, garbage trucks and eight-foot fencing around big parts of central park. they're set up around this zone where we are and there will be rolling lockdowns tonight and

tomorrow because in addition to the pope you have 170 world leaders and their delegations and their motorcades, as well. back live at st. patrick's tomorrow, another test for pope francis' stamina, at 8:30 in the morning he addresses the general assembly, the 170 world leaders in english and spanish and followed to the southern tip of manhattan, the 9/11 memorial and museum and it will be an interfaith service there and the evening ends with a mass at madison square garden. the invited guests and many of them got their tickets by lottery. there was controversy over that, and a lot of confusion, but more than 20,000 catholics are lucky enough to attend that mass tomorrow evening. we'll have much more coming up at 5:30 including where the pope is spending the night tonight and tomorrow night, not too shabby digs. wait until you hear how many skweet the square feet it goes and what his diet includes.

in the meantime our team coverage continues as we wait for the pope at jfk. tom sherwood spent his day at capitol hill. >> jim, the pope was blunt and clear. he praised america, but called for more social justice. >> mr. speaker, the pope of the holy see! >> unlike the unruly jockeying for position and the state of the union address, members of congress respectfully applauded pope francis. the pope brought his message of reconciliation to a congress often bitterly divided in this great country. >> in the land of the free and the home of the brave. >> area leaders in the audience included maryland senator ben carton and tim kaine among others. the pope denounced violence and weapons of war in the name of religion, citing the worst refugee crisis since world war i, he called for help and compassion for all refugees and immigrants. >> we must not be taken aback by

the numbers, but rather view them as persons. >> and pope francis called on congress and america to -- the pope's message urged respect for all life in direct repudiation of abortion which he did not specifically mention. >> to protect and defend human life at any stage of its development. >> one local member of congress noted the pope speaking to a divided congress. >> i don't think one speech or one visit by a pope is going to suddenly and miraculously help weave back the fabric of our political culture. >> but connolly said the address was still important. >> afterwards, pope francis walked out to the congressional balcony to greet a crowd of about 50,000 that had come to hear him. >> pope francis is the first pope to ever address a meeting

of congress. wendy? >> tom sherwood. the pope in his speech, he invoked the works of four americans, president lincoln and martin luther king, thomas martin and dorothy day. dorothy day was born in 1897 and she was a pacifist who fought for social justice and she founded the catholic worker movement. in an interview in 1971, she said if your brother is hungry, you feed him and the pope's inclusion of day is notable because her supporters have pushed for her canonization and dorothy day had an abortion early in her life. after his address on capitol hill the pope got in his fiat and went to went to st. patrick's church on 10th street, northwest d.c., there he addressed the needs of the poor. the pope called on more people to help those who are hungry, sick or homeless. afterwards he met and spoke to some of the 120,000 people who have been helped by catholic

charities in the d.c. area. later this hour, our chris gordon will give us a closer look at how pope francis identifies with the disadvantaged and the poor. some of the most animated moments from the pope's final day came during his visit to catholic charities. after a special lunch the focus quickly shifted away from food. our team coverage continues now and pat collins has the report. >> reporter: jim, they're still cleaning up from the catholic charities luncheon today and boy, what a luncheon it was. you know, they say the pope does what the pope wants to do and again, pope francis went off the script, but people didn't mind at all. >> catholic charities serves more than 4.2 meals eachier and none will be more memorable with this one and the lunch with pope francis. you see, he met with congress,

but he wanted to lunch with the poor. a catholic charities meal for several hundred clients under a tent in front of charity headquarters downtown. >> when the big doors opened and the pope came down the stairs the menu changed, people wanted to touch him, shake his hand, get pictures and when the pope is working the room who has time to eat? he took a handwritten note from this little boy named steven. dear pope, please pray for me and my mother for a job and a better life. >> your son gave him that note. >> yes. i guess that's the only thing that matters. >> do you think he'll pray for you? >> i think so. >> do you think you'll get a job? >> i hope so. >> the pope kissed rebecca and she has a picture to prove it. >> what does that mean? i don't know, but it's very exciting.

is about to land it left here at joint base andrews about 4:30 the airspace has been cleared for him to get there and 35 minutes later he's about to land and we'll keep an eye on that for you. one of the last people to say good-bye to him was larry hogan who was at the plane at joint base as the pope boarded. he met pope francis saying it was an incredible honor. the pope gave help a blessing on behalf of all cancer patients and this took place at the catholic church. a doctor diagnosed hogan with non-hodgkin's lymphoma this summer. he says 95% of that cancer is gone and his faith gives him the strength to fight the disease. he's inspired by the pope's call to serve others. >> we put everything you need to catch up with the pope's events in d.c., these remarkable, two and a half, three days and it's all at you areio fingertips and

click on the papal visit of the nbc washington app. police are trying to figure out if two attacks on female joggers in loudoun county in virginia might be connected. somebody tackled a woman this morning in landsdown. it happened there in riverside parkway and we are told that woman managed to fight off her attacker and she got a ride home from someone who was driving by and another female jogger says a man assaulted her at about the same time yesterday in leesburg. people in six townhouses will have to find another place to stay tonight, was there an explosion in howard county. a worker is also said to be in stable condition. after that blast and it was last night in columbia, that worker responded to a possible gas leak when the explosion occurred. it took firefighters, three hours to get that blaze contained. one other person wound up in the hospital for gas inhalation. >> and some terrifying moments for a driver when a vre train

sideswiped his construction truck and then dragged it down the tracks. only on news 4, we're hearing from that driver who says he's lucky to be alive. the collision happened just north of the mandarin hotel in southwest d.c., it sent three people to the hospital. >> here's mark segraves. hey, wendy, you know, this could have been much, much worse and you can see the train is off the tracks and take a look at the damage done to that truck. of course, it could have been much worse, but that train did not have any passengers. still, one crew member on that train was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. >> yeah. i'm lucky to live because god is great. >> it was just before noon when this northbound vre train headed for union station was passing behind the mandarin oriental hotel in southwest, entering a tunnel. inside that tunnel the train hit a dump truck that was part of a

construction crew working on the tracks. the driver of that truck says once the train hit him he just held on for his life. >> he sideswiped me and i held the steering to the left and that means i must go with the flow until it stops. >> the truck driver was not hurt, three crew members aboard the train were taken to the hospital. one with serious injuries. there were no passengers on the train. vre has canceled the 7:00 p.m. southbound train out of union station headed for fredericksburg and other trains experienced it, mark segraves, news 4. she had just gotten off the bus stop in woodbridge and was only walking a couple of houses to get home, when a man tried to grab her, not once, but twice. coming up at 5:00, you will hear from the young victim's father. also, we'll tell you about the search for a man who walked away from a picnic in the park. we'll tell you why police are so

all ryes are on jfk airport, international airport in new york and the american airlines 777 which is carrying pope francis to his next destination. he has arrived and they are now taxiing up to the stairs. he's going to begin his tour of new york which includes a visit to the world trade center site and the memorial there. and of course, st. patrick's cathedral before he heads down to philadelphia as he continues what has been a whirlwind tour

and a whirlwind for everyone in his path which is lovely. jim handly is up there and he'll be giving you updates throughout the hour and we'll be bringing you all of the events as they unfold tomorrow. a frightened teenager and a worried father. tonight, prince william county police are investigating an abduction attempt in woodbridge. the 13-year-old girl says she was just steps from her front door when a man grabbed her twice before she was able to get away. our northern virginia bureau reporter david culver just spoke with the child's father who asked that we withhold the family's identity. >> as soon as i walked in i called her name and she didn't answer, and i got curious to what was going on and i ran upstairs and she was just balled up in the bed just holding her knees to her chest and with her book bag still on. >> she got off her school bus in this quiet woodbridge neighborhood just off cardinal

drive. a man pulled up in a blue pickup truck asking for directions. then got physical. he grabbed her arm first and she ripped her arm away from hip and he went for her shirt and she ran and that's how it started to rip, so it tore down the middle. >> she gave us a really good description. >> jonathan peroc says officers are now on the lookout. >> white male, early 50s with a beard and distinctive mole on his left cheek so that's whoy r we're looking for right now. >> it's scary because i have a little girl and if she was outside it could have been her. >> she'll be keeping her little girl closer to home. >> she's just not going outside anymore. she likes to go outside and it's just not happening because i don't know what's going on. >> as for the young viim's father, he's glad to know his daughter didn't give in and kept fighting. >> i'm proud of her in the sense that she was able to get away, able to fight and you know, and still be here.

>> we remember this from tuesday. >> it was like the day before yesterday. >> yes. >> again, he made very good time and he left 30 minutes late and they do clear air traffic as they do for air force one when the pope was in the air and the trip to new york, if you've ever been on the shuttle the trip is not what slows you down, it's the circling before they let you land or sitting on the tarmac before they let you take off here. the pope -- you used the word earlier, whirlwind schedule and he was busy here in washington and will remain so in new york as he emerges out of the thing and once again, takes his hat off because of the wind so it

won't blow away. it begins almost right away and he'll get a helicopter over to the next, i guess hour or two and head over to st. matthews cathedral for service there and he has the united nations early, as i recall, tomorrow morning and then a mass in central park tomorrow afternoon and on his way to philadelphia for even more. the pope will be very busy for the next couple of days. >> and may i correct something that i said the other day when he arrived. he takes i think it's a zucchetto, i called it a yarmulke-type cap and heard from several people who corrected me, but because the wind, you know, coming off the airplanes and -- >> always a wise move. >> always a wise move, yes.

>> and he always appears to be joyful and he's a very gracious man as we saw here and it was lovely having him move through town. >> so again, jim handly is up there. he will be following the pope around for you and bringing you all of the sights and sounds and the excitement as the people in the big apple which has a very large catholic community as they greet the pope as we discovered here and you don't have to be catholic and you don't have to be religious. the man has sort of a human message to bring and to bring to the world and just trying to make everybody civil and get along and be good to one another. >> a large and gracious soul and once again, you can see in new york. you can't see it now, but he was greeted on the tarmac there by a couple of children. he's made it a point to receive

children and to bless them as he does almost everyone else, but there's something a little special about the way he does that with the children that present themselves before him. >> he had beautiful weather here as our weather will be not so nice in the coming days. doug, is that correct? he got here and it was cloudy and as soon as he arrived in andrews air force base it did make things nicer and plenty of sunshine and since then we've had nothing, but sun and great weather and the clouds are moving into our region which are up there toward new york and sunny skies and a temperature of 80 degrees and the temperature currently sitting in the upper 70s for the most part and 78 degrees at the airport and winds out of the northeast at 15 miles per hour under mostly sunny skies and it will be a nice afternoon and nice clouds streaming there. 75 fredericksburg and 75 in the

huntingtown area and no rain. let me show you why, we have high clouds streaming across the area now and just down to the south and making all of the this way making its way into georgia and the carolinas and some could get three to five inches of rain and it will try to move our way. however, it's just not going to come far enough to the north. so we're not talking about a washout of a weekend at all, but i do think we are going to see some chances for rain and tomorrow, just the clouds moving on here and we will see a lot of cloud cover. each at 5k clo, the shower activity toward fredericksburg and to orange and that's what we expect for the weekend, too. most of the rain staying just down to the south if you live around fredericksburg or southern maryland, you have a much better chance at see something rain and 72 on saturday and 70 on sunday and just a 30% to 40% chance of rain and a couple of things you'll need this week, you'll need the

the pope's journey to the u.s. has now moved to new york. within the past couple of minutes as we just saw his plane landed at jfk and of course, jim handly is across the street from one of the pope's first stops which is st. patrick's cathedral in midtown manhattan and he just landed there tonight. hi, jim. >> reporter: you talked about the weather and couldn't have asked for better weather and it keeps getting better and better for the pope and the memorable moments continue on the tarmac and he's met with people from all walks, young and old and we got 200 invited indijence guests, the homeless also on hand to meet with the pope, too, and members from the jazz group from brooklyn high school, and he will be boarding a helicopter and get on the plane right on to a marine helicopter to take a tour of manhattan which will take him over the world trade center area also the 9/11

memorial where he'll be speaking tomorrow and also spending some time and also he'll see the entire skyline and the son of immigrants again will be seeing the statue of liberty and he is boarding that marine helicopter right now to begin that tour of manhattan. 2.6 million catholics here on the edge of their seats in new york city. you know, they set up a podium for him, but he decided not to speak. you never know with this pope, though. so every corner they've made allowance for him to stop the car wherever he may want to stop or want to get out. he will not be on the popemobile tonight, but he will be traveling to st. patrick's cathedral. he is heading there first, when he gets to the helicopter to the southern tip of manhattan and the wall street heliport, he'll be treated by cardinal timothy dolan and he then rides to st. patrick's cathedral down fifth avenue and he'll be greeted by 500 invited catholics and greeted by governor cuomo and mayor de blasio. we caught up with new yorkers willing to wait long hours and

others having a tough time already getting around. >> fifth avenue. >> exactly. so, yeah. figure out how to get there, i guess. >> are you looking forward to the pope's coming? >> i am. i'm excited. >> do you think he'll be impressed? >> that's yet to be seen. >> they say they'll put us out, but the lord willing, they may not. >> you've got your flag. >> yeah! here's my pope. >> you don't have a chair, though. you have six more hours ahead, but you can cling to this fence, i guess. >> he's going to hold me up. >> i would love for him to put peace, ask for peace in the world and peace in the united states and peace in new york city, you know? it's a lot of things going on right now and we need his blessing. >> reporter: back live there, a shot at jfk airport, the prop propellers just now starting to gear up. the pope is aboard this marine helicopter and there are two there and one will be tailing

him as he takes that 40 to 45-minute tour of manhattan. again, it will take him down to the wall street heliport this evening. he will get to see the statue of liberty and the entire skyline, the first time that he will ever see new york. as we know, it's the first time he's been to the united states. we've got something of a competition going on. i talked to a lot of people. they were very impressed with washington, d.c., and the welcome that we gave him down there and they're hoping that they can live up to this heavenly bar that washington has set. it's a very high bar. they're going to do their very best. there are big obstacles and their big challenge will be security on the ground throughout this 40 hours that he'll be spending in manhattan. they had barricaded about 37 miles that will be up and down throughout the city, rolling barricades, if you will, a lot of jersey walls going up and eight-foot fences, too. they are really concerned about

traffic. you know, it's all private sector here and not so many government workers and they didn't tell everybody to stay home like in washington, d.c., and a lot of people going to work tomorrow in addition to the thousands, hundreds of thousands that will be at central park and madison square garden for the mass tomorrow and at the top of the morning he'll be talking at 8:30 to the u.n. general assembly and 170 world leaders and that's what complicates thises visit for pope francis is all of those leaders and almost 200 motorcades traveling around this city all day tomorrow. you thought we had it bad with three, the president, vice president, pope francis in washington, you can imagine what the challenge will be on these congested streets here and the one below me, fifth avenue looks deserted like a ghost town. his only, vent tonight is at st. patrick's cathedral. he will be taking part in the

says the pope's meeting was a sign of support. pope francis made time to visit with the city's poor at st. patrick's church downtown. he delivered a message that was meant to inspire hope for the homeless and the hungry and news 4's chris gordon reports. >> reporter: pope francis was greeted by monsignor salvador chriscola who is the pastor at st. patrick's church and the pope waved to the crowd as they called papa. the pontiff had asked to address this gathering of 200 clients of catholic charities who represented the men, women and children who are helped by catholic charities each year. speaking in know spaish through an interpreter, the pope said there is no justification for homelessness and he let the crowd surround him, shaking hands and taking pictures and embracing them. >> i got a chance to shake the hand of the pope two times and pat him on the back and he's a great person and i'm thankful to god for the opportunity just to

volkswagen's top executive is already fired and three other high-ranking officials are expected to join him. reuters is reporting that the heads of audi, rnd and porsche as well as the chief u.s. executive for volkswagen will be dismissed at a board meeting tomorrow. this all comes after the automaker admitted it manipulated software in some of its diesel models so that it would trick the federal emissions testing to think the cars were meeting the right emission standards when, in fact, they were violating them. >> those models, by the way, will include, these are the diesel, the a-3, the jetta, beetle, golf and pass at with

there is a desperate plea tonight from a local family who is searching for their missing father. 80-year-old lubin phipps disappeared from a senior picnic that was being held at the watkins park in prince georges county last week. tracee wilkins is outside that park to tell us what has the police most concerned and how the public can help. >> he doesn't have his medication. he doesn't know this area and because he suffers from dementia he may actually think that he is in st. thomas in the u.s. virgin islands. they have this billboard up here trying to inform folks on the roadways here that this man is still missing and they are looking for the public's help. >> i just want him to be found right now. michelle phipps' father

80-year-old lubin phipps has been missing for more than a week now. >> that's all i can think about is him being out there. >> last friday phipps was with a senior group when he asked to use the bathroom. he has not been seen since. >> we have the calvert county rescue squad that was helping and searching with the helicopter, the dogs, the horses, the park police. everyone has been out here, but we're out here every day. >> there are billboards in the area with his description and flyers posted on nearly every store in the area where he went missing. >> even people that we don't know are coming out to volunteer. he's describe described as 5'6", gray hair and he speaks with a caribbean accent and may talk about being in the virgin islands and he's living with dementia. >> he's not familiar with the environment because since he's been here he's pretty much been at the assisted living home. he doesn't know where he is and

and that's the impact forecast for tomorrow and over the next 24 hours we make that transition. friday our transition day as we get set up and teal with the storm system grazing the coast. one of the areas that will see the biggest impact is right at the beach and the water temperature now at 75 degrees and they're moving up the coast and we have the northeasterly wind and out ahead of that so there could possibly be some beach erosion and it is a big festival taking place at ocean city this upcoming weekend and there could be gusts at 30 miles per hour on sunday and the beach locations running 70 to 72 degrees and very cool and windy there. here is a storm system on friday afternoon and right around the outer banks with a lot of rain down in that area as we get into late friday here, there might be a few sprinkles around rappahannock and quantico and there is your snapshot for

friday and that grazes and meanders south around our area on saturday. so it will be mainly dry here with maybe a shower or two at times and then the rain will kind of cut off and leave the area, but sunday as the storm system finally makes its way up the coast it's a chance of rain and we have a 30% chance for saturday and a 40% chance for sunday as it heads up the coast. >> we start out fine and limited sunshine and pretty comfortable. that's the thing and tomorrow it will be cooler with the cloud cover, 74, 75 degrees for the high temperature and you may notice wind coming through tomorrow as the system gets closer to us. >> the rain intensity with the system. here's the good thing and remember i told you that heavy rain right around the storm around the outer banks and around here, you'll just need an umbrella and breezy showers is what we'll have around the area and a lot of folks to the landmark music festival this upcoming weekend and we're 70 to

72 degrees and lots of clouds for the weekend and folks will be able to get out and exercise and get out and about and get some things done this weekend. the showers for the weekend and as we get into next week we'll get dry out ahead of it. guys? >> the number of students in our region who are eligible for free meals is soaring. news 4 got a hold of public records that reveal an additional 10,000 local students now qualify. montgomery county is meeting the growing demand and scott mcfarland went inside the central kitchen to see how the district is doing it. >> a school lunch by the hundreds, workers add the potatoes and these are the school lunch cooks and the cleaners, but they're not in the school, but a processing facility near montgomery county air park and it is a new central kitchen producing 70,000 meals a day and they'll be shifted to

dozens, and served on monday as the school's services are director. that's very unique and efficient and the local schools need to be more efficient than ever. public records show a spike in the number of students requiring free school meals in the region. thousands more than last year in 2013 and it's an enormous burden for schools that must keep pace and helen herrera as classmates depend on free meals. >> a lot of kids that i know, they don't have, like, a lot of food at their houses and they like to come to school because that's the only way that they can eat. >> we found an increasing number of local school districts trying free breakfast for all students. a new program that increases participation whether the students qualify for free meals or not. any student can come by and grab one of these, yogurt and a bagel and say this will increase participation. >> nearly one in every three schools in anne arundel county and prince georges and loudoun
