they tell us that he went inside and was transported to the hospital. this is still an ongoing investigation, and we are told that investigators are actively looking through surveillance video around seed public charter to see if they might be able to identify a suspect, but we are told that that 14-year-old who was stabbed in the back is expected to be okay. back to you. >> thanks, meagan. a young man is dead after being hit by a car in montgomery county and neighbors say this was no accident. >> clarksburg on little senecca parkway. witnesses say he argued with a driver right before he was hit. news 4's chris gordon is live now with what witnesses say what the men were fighting about. >> reporter: witnesses say one man was yelling to slow down. they are trying to determine if this was a fatal accident or if

it was intentional. >> it was a hit and run, but was it accidental ore intentional? >> chopper 4 flew over the scene on sweet spire drive. just after noon, a man walking his german shepherd was hit and killed. a woman who was driving by at the time witnessed an argument she says bordered on rage. >> i was driving by that road with my windows down, and i saw two men there, and one of the men was arguing and cursing at the other men very loud and his car was off the streets and i had to slow down anyway, and then i saw him and i passed by, and i saw him getting in the car and he kind of was behind me and he went back up toward the same way. the 20-year-old driver reportedly left the scene calling his mother who then called police. investigators are examining damage to the car here on amber ridge circle in germantown. that's about three miles away

from the scene in clarksburg where the young man walking his dog died. a neighbor took these pictures saying the victim's german shepherd appeared unhurt, but traumatized and was taken away. >> the montgomery county police collision reconstruction team is on the scene, taking measurements, detectives are interviewing the driver of the car and witnesses. >> too soon to say whether this was intentional. >> it is too soon, but again, they're speaking with the driver and speaking with witnesses and trying to determine exactly what may have occurred and again are asking anyone who may have witnessed anything who haven't come forward to please contact police. >> and this evening we are getting new details about what happened in the moments just before the car drove off leaving the scene of this fatal hit and run in clarksburg. that's the very latest live from the scene. pat, back to you. >> chris gordon. >> tonight we're hearing from a good samaritan who was stomped

in the head and kicked in the eye. news 4's shomari stone has more. >> he had just finished pumping gas at the bp gas station. he walked right over here and when he walked around that corner that's when he was beaten. >> these kids are terrible. >> it's the first time he is speaking out about being attacked on pennsylvania avenue in southeast d.c. near east and market. >> we have a problem in the city with these kids. they're too out of control. >> take a look at the surveillance video you see only on 4. this past tuesday, 4:45 in the evening at the b.p. gas station. hersy is the man dressed in jeans and a long sleeve black shirt and notice the kids one dressed in a black shirt and khakis and hersy says continued to punch him out of the camera's view. that's someone's kid. how would i feel if it was mine.

for the sacredness of all life. he called for the recognition of what he said was the natural difference between man and woman. pope francis also reiterated his calls for action to combat global warming. right now the holy father is in east harlem speaking with students at a catholic school that follows an emotional trip to the site of the nation's worst terror attack, ground zero. our jim handly is in new york and following the tour and the interfaith service earlier this morning. he joins us live from 30 rock. jim? >> hi, wendy. you know, he just left that catholic elementary school moments ago. he's back in the fiat headed toward central park where he will board the popemobile and meet 80,000 supporters to central park and it's a mile and a half journey to the star-studded mass. at 6:00 we'll be bringing you those live pictures. earlier today it was the most emotional event of his united states journey. let's take a look at the 9/11

memorial. the scene today and this was about 11:30, he stood by the fountains and a moving moment, he described the flowing water at the memorial as the silent cry of those that were victims of the mindset that knows only violence, hatred and revenge. this is a place where we weep out of the acts of helplessness. acts of destrucketiodestruction other faiths, the power of love and remembrance. this place of death became a place of life, too. goodness over evil and unity over hatred and division. then he addressed first responders. their mission, he said was about being brothers and sisters. >> translator: among this pain we can also feel the capacity of heroic goodness, but the human

the top of the list? kevin mccarthy. he's been house majority leader since last year when former virginia congressman eric cantor lost his bid for reelection and before that he spent three years as majority whip. he was elected to congress in 2006 and represents an area of california that encompasses bakersfield and he's a former deli owner back when he was 21 years old he opened a deli. how did he get the money? he won it from a scratch-off lottery ticket and invested that money in ball wall and spent years in the california general assembly. on the issues he's considered somewhat moderate. mccarthy said he's the first republican in his family. moderate on issues like immigration and considered more conservative on others like the economy and abortion. the right to life committee gives him a 100% rating. as for speaker boehner, well, his resignation is likely good news for republican voters.

72% of voters were dissatisfied with him and we'll have more on that in ten minutes when we talk to nbc's mark murray. hello, everybody. i'm storm team 4 meteorologist doug kammerer. it's a friday and fantastic because it is friday and we are dealing with light rain across the area and let's take a look and show you the rain outside right now. we are live in herndon by the way in fairfax county and we've seen shower activity and watch over the last won are one to two hours and the rain developed along the fairfax county area right on through d.c. and most of southern maryland will continue to see some showers developing through the rest of the evening and make sure you have that umbrella read fe you're going to be out and about. the wider view shows a lot more rain just down to the south and extremely heavy rain, cape hatteras seeing the heavy rain and not a washout of a weekend. if you have weekend plans don't expect them to be canceled, but

filed a fake claim for workers comp while on the job this spring. they say he lied about falling on some wet pavement, hurting his shoulder. in a police station parking lot. we are told that surveillance video from the date in question shows a very clear day without kenny falling. he resigned in august. fallout over the salmonella outbreak linked to the upscale fig & olive restaurant chain has been bicoastal. "the los angeles times" reports 12 people have gotten sick from another outbreak traced to a fig & olive location in west hollywood. this comes about a week after the fig & olive reopened after dozens of salmonella cases blamed on food served there. the exact source of the salmonella isn't yet determined, but both restaurants have taken dishes containing truffle oil off the menu. details now about charges against a local nurse who had

right now at 5:15, a local nurse faces charges of sexual assault accused of trying to take advantage of a patient. it's the story news 4's mark segraves broke on twitter this afternoon. mark joins us with details that you will see only on news 4. he worked as an inhome nurse in our area for years and most recently an employee of medricstar visiting urs innes association and now he's facing years in prison. according to court documents 31-year-old ndale was caring for a female patient in his apartment in northwest d.c.

he was there to wash and treat wounds on her lower back. according to police while he was alone with the patient in her apartment he sexually assaulted her. news of that assault sent shock waves through the in-home nursing community. >> to hear that someone abused the trust in the worst way possible is horrifying for me and i know all of my colleagues who work at home will have the same reaction. >> according to police after he sexually assaulted the patient he asked her, how did you like it? when she asked him to stop he did it again and again he asked her, how did you like it? the woman called for help, but nobody heard her. she told police. the nurse then exposed himself before leaving. medricstar released a statement saying he had passed all of the background checks and when they learned of the serious allegations against him they immediately suspended him and launched an internal

investigation. when he refused to cooperate they immediately terminated his employment. now i just spoke with d.c. police and they say this investigation is ongoing and they're asking anyone in the public who may know of other victims to give police a call. coming up at 6:00, we'll tell you how you can protect yourself or a loved one if you ever have to bring a nurse into your home. mark segraves, thank you, mark. a white house staffer who died in a charity biking event was laid to rest today. jake brewer lost control of his bike and was hit by a car last week and while he was taking part in the ride to conquer cancer fund-raiser, brewer worked as a senior policy adviser in the white house of science and technology. his widow who is pregnant remembered him for the, quote, ever-present twinkle in his eye. president obama said brewer had a big heart and an insatiable desire to give back. flowers and mementos adorn the

statue of robert e. simon. the founder of reston who died at age 101 earlier this week. it was a candlelight vigil planned for tonight on the eve of a multicultural event. people who knew him best said diversity was one of his goals and a photo exhibit illustrates his success. >> he imagined an area where all races and all people and all economic status could come together in community, support and take care of each other. the pe and the people of reston just e loved him back. the multicultural festival runs from lep:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. now back to the political bombshell on capitol hill. house speaker john boehner set to resign from his post and from congress at the end of next month. joining us with more on the impact this could have is nbc senior political editor mark

murray. first, will this have any impact at all for the government shutdown? does it lessen the odds of that? >> i do think in the short term it does less than this. essentially john boehner has a choice to make. is it my job on the line or the government shutdown and he basically put his job on the sacrificial table and the reason being that he now has the freedom and flexibility to work with democrats to avoid a government shutdown at least in the short term. long term, you know, the same, the next speaker will encounter a lot of the same problems that john boehner did 30 to 50 house republicans who would eventually vote again any kind of compromise. that was john boehner's biggest difficulty in the last four years. >> 15 years up on the hill and he's going to give it all up for this? what do you think motivated him to make this announcement today? >> the timing was interesting. he had his signature achievement having the pope address congress and a lot of people thought

neighborhoods will stay dry this evening and look at this radar. the rain is sandwiching together right here and it's this pocket just along 66th and to the west of i-95 where most of the rain will stay pocketed this evening. already, though, some light showers and sprinkles along the beltway right out 66 right now and it is a little wet and we're not seeing the heavy rain and we're in the 70s at least. 71 degree asks reagan national airport will drop to the upper 60s late and our high temperatures for the upcoming weekend will feel much like this weekend, but, well, factor in more wind. it is going to be a breezy weekend and pretty chilly, too, on sunday as the wind continues to ramp up and all out ahead of the storm system and you'll need the windbreaker and umbrella and the long sleeves too, to get through the weekend and there's the area of low pressure tracking right up the coast and as i stop it at 7:00 a.m. saturday, here are the showers down around culpeper and lexington.

>> now at 5:30, pope francis to the end of the last marathon day to a sea of more than 80,000 people. central park is packed right now. it's the pope's biggest and most public event of his trip to the big apple. news 4's jim handly is up there in the big apple and jim, his washington itinerary paled in comparison to the one in new york, my goodness! >> i tell you, he is tough to keep up with here, but he stays right on cue and stays according to schedule. you know the drill, fiat, popemobile and he's back into the fiat after taking over central park. they've shut down about a third of it. you saw some of those 80,000 people who have been up all day

trying to get a glimpse of them. he gave them a 20-minute tour in this procession. a third of the park was shut down and he took the road that bikers, joggers, dog walkers take and didn't get out of the popemobile to really engage. >> they had about a mile and a half of front-row seats to take advantage of. we caught up with some who have been up here since sun up today. >> it's just important because, i mean, it's once in a lifetime and he's such an amazing man, and i really want my kids to be able to see the experience and even if it's just a pass and a wave, it would be awesome. >> you know, there is only one popemobile and even jaded new yorkers were confused today. check out this video. it was something that had people doing double takes. a wax figure of pope francis in a convertible. he looks an awful lot like a real deal. madam tussaud's debuted it where

panda cub, with an adorable new name, but that name is also symbolic. >> this morning the first ladies of the united states and china visited the newest addition to our panda family at the national zoo. >> they got a chance to see us wave to the c weigh the cub and do what we normally do. >> this adorable baby now has a name. >> what did they name him? >> bei bei. >> that's what people call them anyway, right? that's perfect. >> it's something we cherish very, very much. it's like a baby. it's our own, thus the naming of it. >> bei bei, meaning precious treasure. for these chinese ladies the name symbolizes something very important. >> it's really a miracle and baby can be born here, i think it's really a great cooperation

all in the studio and we've been asking you if you like the name bei bei. so far a majority of you liked the name. call, text or tweet us to tell us what you think about bei bei. >> maryland, virginia and the district are joining a multi-state investigation into volkswagen's emissions scandal. attorneys general from d.c. and at least 28 states are working together, after volkswagen admitted using software on diesel emissions tests. as many as half a million vehicles affected in the u.s. the company has not yet detailed fully which cars are involved. in the meantime the epa will begin road testing of all new and used model vehicles. we have some showers moving through and we also have a weekend right in front of us. veronica, how is it going to play out? >> a big weekend, too. a lot of festivals taking place

including ocean city and this has been a tough forecast and we've been talking about that all week long. just how much the guidance that we look at has not had a good handle on that, but here's the way it's looking right now and we do think there are showers around the area and plenty of drive time for your saturday and for traveling i think we're just fine with wet roads and nothing, too heavy and we'll give you a green light for that as far as your weather impact, exercise and getting out and about and more moderate impacts on your day and make sure you dress accordingly and say softball and baseball practice that will be going on, and i think we're just fine and she'll have to keep an eye on the radar and make sure you download the washington app for that and you can get a live radar on the phone and make sure you have the umbrella ready, as well. we have showers moving through the area and staying south of 66th. and quantico, fredericksburg and waldorf and the areas that have the rain now is where the bull being of the rain will be tomorrow, too, maybe inching up more toward fairfax and d.c. as well as the clinton area and

that's where the higher rainfall totals will be, right down through here and high-impact area here as you head up to the north frederick around baltimore and howard county and that's where there will not be much rain at all falling saturday, sunday, different story and that rain comes right through our area and we have a cool start tomorrow and definitely gray and breezy. you will notice the rain with temperatures in the 60s and upper 60s to around 70 degrees and i'm not sure there will be too many people out in their yards barbecuing and we've got that going on right now with meteorologist doug kammerer, and he is, of course, out in someone's backyard this evening. if you're heading to ocean city and the sunset's going on this weekend and the water temperature only at 74 degrees and it is going to be downright gusty and there will be beach erosion there and let's go to doug and see what he's up to. doug, what are you up to? >> just playing a little soccer, veronica. boys against the girls.

>> he actually smoked -- smoked some macaroni and cheese, wendy. i have to tell you, macaroni and cheese was right up your alley. trust me. back to you now. i'm tired. >> looks good. the smell of gas lingers in fairfax county tonight because of a leaking pipeline that dumped thousands of gallons of gas into a drainage area in centreville. that leak was found monday near route 28 and new braddock road as part of the colonial pipeline. that spans 11 states. it runs from texas up to new jersey and while the ntsb is investigating, the cleanup is already under way. news 4's derek ward tells us the process is not easy. >> officials with colonial pipeline say it's a recovery effort now, recovering contaminated soil and it's treated differently than your average excavation and plastic wrap through the decontamination sight. by mid-morning they moved 16
