news 4 today starts now. welcome to news 4 today on this saturday morning. i'm david culver. >> i'm angie goff. we are so glad you could join us early. you can tell from the look behind us,ç though, that we ar in for another cloudy day. >> let's check in with tom kierein. the storm team 4 weather center. what we can expect for the rest of our weekend. hey, tom. >> cloudy but not wet here in the metro area. as we look at the storm team 4 radar right now, getting a little bit of light rain, south of washington and southern maryland, lower part of the eastern shore. over the last hour, the area of rain in virginia is shrinking in size and intent sity. heavier rain eastern part of the northern neck. it's light rain. the metro area all dry here, just a cloudy sky and it looks like this rain is going to stay

well south of the metro area for much of the day ahead. there's the tower camera showing our gray sky and cool temperatures. right now low to mid-60s nearby suburbs in washington. mid-60s around the bay. shenandoah valley in the upper 50s and mid-50s out in the mountains. a lot of clouds there as well. maybe a little bit of drizzle around the skyline drive right now as well as parts of the shenandoah valley. look at our rain chances for the rest of the weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, tom. >> pope francis getting ready to leave new york city and head to philadelphia for his final two days in america. a live picture from the wall street heliport where he'll take that chopper -- to jfk shortly and fly into philly. >> pope francis used his trip to new york to touch the lives of tens of thousands. it started with an appeal to the united nations to protect the planet. at ground zero, the pope call on the world to build unity from

its differences. 80,000 people lined central park, hoping for a glimpse of the pope mobile as it made its way through. he capped the night off with this, a beautiful mass at madison square garden. and pope's u.s. trip has been packed full of events. the final two days are expected to draw some of the biggest crowds yet. >> that's right. eun yang joins us live from philadelphia this morning. what a great vantage point where the pope will be celebrating mass. good morning, eun. >> reporter: good morning to you, david and angie. we're in the heart of philadelphia where the pope is expected to arrive in just a couple of hours. and david, you mentioned, this is a great vantage point. to give you a sense of where we are, right behind me is the benjamin franklin parkway, stretching all the way down to the philadelphia museum of art. you can see that large building in the background to city hall. you can call it the pennsylvania avenue of philly. there's a huge outdoor festival of families that will take place

later today. already people are lining the route. we could hear singing and chanting and cheering this morning. now, this entire area, it's called the center city of philadelphia is shut down right now as thousands of people come into the city to see pope francis. some estimates put over a million people here. you can see the jumbotron set up along the route here as well. as you can imagine, security is intense. it is a huge undertaking, law enforcement from so many agencies. there you can see the u.s. border patrol out early to mark their post. and we have seen counterterrorism units out as well as local police. each person who gets into the perimeter has to go through a security checkpoint so that they go through these magnetometers as well, tsa agents are checking every single bag. this is going to take take long time, as you can imagine. there are only 20 checkpoints where thousands of people who have to get through the perimeters to mark their spot. it could take hours. the city has warned people to be

patient. there are a lot of people trying to get through and security is so intense. this one woman we've been talking to, she was there at 3:30 yesterday afternoon. imagine she's one of the first people to wait in line. she brought her daughters and slept overnight on the street to get a glimpse of pope francis. she says this is the best reason for this journey. >> especially for me personally. and what i hear from my children, is he just makes us feel like we matter, that people, the real people matter to him.ç not all the words and, you know, the different things that people want to judge you for, but that god loves you and he's here to tell us that. >> reporter: we see more people like melissa coming to the streets here to line up and mark their spots. a lot of people showed up yesterday evening because they wanted to avoid the crowds. as the morning wears on, you're going to expect thousands of people crowding the streets to

see a glimpse of pope francis. coming up in the next half hour, we'll talk about more on pope francis's jam packed schedule that will begin here in the center city of philadelphia. >> when we think about the planning for this and how much went into this, you know there were talks to essentially shut down philadelphia. what role, if any, have the local police played in trying to facilitate all of this and make it as convenient as possible for folks there? >> reporter: yes. it's a huge job for the local police department. philadelphia police, they know the city better than the other agencies who come from other places. we spoke to commissioner charles ramsey who was actually the d.c. police chief for nearly nine years. he says this is unlike anything he's ever done. he headed up two inaugurations in washington, d.c. he's had practice in that sort of thing. here's philadelphia, they don't have a blueprint, any other plan to work with. they're starting from scratch to build the law enforcement, the security plans. they've been working on this for

a month. the secret service is really heading up this event because the national security, the homeland security, rather, called it a national security event. all hands on deck this weekend. this should be quite an extraordinary event. just one more thing. the chief did say, listen, we know we've been warning you you'll have to wait in line and this will be trying your patients as it shuts down the city but this is an extraordinary event, a historic event, a once in a lifetime opportunity. if you can make the journey here to see the pope or at least hear some of what he has to say, it's really worth the effort. >> it's funny you say that, eun. one hash tag i saw across social media from people who waited hours to see the pope w was #worththewait. >> thanks so much. we'll check back in with you in about half an hour. >> absolutely. montgomery county police are looking into whether the driver and victim in a deadly hit and run knew each other. family members tell news 4 that william clarkson was killed

friday afternoon as he walked his dog in a clarksburg neighborhood. clarkson was 21 years old. neighbors say that they witnessed a heated argument just moments before the crash. >> i saw two men there. one of the men was arguing, cursing at the other man very loud. >> the victim's dog survived this crash. investigators say that the 20-year-old driver left the scene and then called his mom. then she call police. clarkson's family calls this a senseless act of rage. an 18-year-old from manassas being held without bail after police say he attacked a man and a woman with a hammer. city police say eduardo blandon jr. hit the two with a hammer just after 2:30 yesterday afternoon and ran away on king carter street. police found and arrested him about an hour later. the the two victims were seriously hurt. blandon due in court in november. 7:00 right now. he got attacked trying to be a

good samaritan and break up a fight. this morning, the victim is talking only to news 4 as police search for suspects. a woman lost her home and her husband on the very same day. one thing she now says she is thankful for. and preserving america's front yard. the first of its kind event happening today to restore and improve the national mall. we'll take you live to th

you're watching news 4 today. i seen a whole bunch of kids kicking on him. all i could remember was telling one of them, stop. >> that's countee hoursee saying he was just trying to do the right thing when he was attacked by a group of teens. a nearby gas station videotaped what you see there. the group started punching him as soon as he turned the corner. he was just there to try to help out the other teen. a wife and mother is prince george's county is dealing with the loss of her husband. >> that struggle now even tougher. a week ago today, a fire gutted her home. this happened during her husband's funeral. only on news 4. darcy spencer went back to that

house as the family tries to salvage whatever they can. >> reporter: coral wilson walks into the burned out shell that, until last saturday, she called home. >> the fire started up this stair rail at the top. >> reporter: that's what she learned from fire investigators. she wasn't here when it happened. she was at her husband's funeral on what would have been his 60th birthday. >> it could have been all of us just get trapped in here. >> reporter: the cell phone video shows how quickly the springdale house was consumed by flames. investigators later determined it was electrical in nature. wilson says virtually nothing could be salvaged from the home that she shared with her husband of 38 years.ç

you're watching news 4 today. a live look from new york. pope francis getting ready to leave the big apple. he's going to ultimately be heading to philadelphia today. that's going to wrap up his final two days while here in the u.s. we're standing by as he boards that chopper which will take him to jfk. and then he'll fly to philadelphia. it's in philadelphia today that he has another busy schedule. he's not slowed down. he'll have mass this morning, celebrating that at the cathedral basilica of saint peter and paul. he'll have a mall address where 40,000 people are expected to attend.

big crowds are waiting. >> he'll visit some inmates as well. that will be an emotional part of his trip as he gets ready to wrap up his first u.s. visit. i think the one thing a lot of people have been talking about, i've been talking with them about pope coverage is the stamina of this pope. >> right. >> he's been nonstop. >> we're told he hasn't been feeling 100% but he's still making the effort to get through. we'll be checking in on these live pictures and with eun yang throughout the broadcast. happening today as well, the inaugural landmark music festival kicking off at west potomac park. >> news 4's derrick ward live there this morning. >> have you seen drake yet? where's drake? >> reporter: i thought i saw him come by here in a car. i could be wrong. somebody was saying something from starting from the bottom and now he's here. >> you're so good. >> reporter: drake, dr. john will be among the acts that are down here. as you said, this is on the mall and it is all about the mall.

this is -- those are just a few names that will be part of this two-day festival of music. the mall is something we take for granted.kp r(t&ho it's always been here. likely it will always be here. but you know, it gets 29 million visitors every year. that's got to take its toll. there has been some work being done by down the capital. you remember they dug that up and replanted the grass. there's filtration issues there and everything. remember the story is also about the lincoln memorial, parts of that coming down. there's about $750 million in deferred maintenance that needs to be done. that's what this concert is for. it starts at 11:00 today and there will also be a show at 11:00 tomorrow. they run until 7:00 p.m. and what's it all about? let's hear from one of the organizers. >> for a great cause. we're super excited to spread awareness for our need to restore the park.

>> reporter: and you know, this is also about reaching out maybe to a generation that might not necessarily be that concern. i was talking to one of the folks. they said a lot of people that come to the concert may be too young to remember other events. again, it starts at 11:00 and runs until 7:00. that's today and tomorrow. tickets are only available online. you can go to landmarkfestival.org. they cost $175 for a two-day pass and $105 for a one huff day pass. all those restrictions about what you can and can't bring to the mall will be in place. there's no parking in this area. bikes can park free. you might want to take metro and make the walk down. with nice weather like this, it's a nice day to come out and come out and do something like this. >> you see drake, send him our way, okay? >> i'll write that down. >> make it happen. >> thanks, derrick.

a congressman from philadelphia is face is criticism after he couldn't resist temptation during pope francis's visit. yesterday as the pope left the chamber. let me go ahead and borrow this script. >> sure. >> we're missing it. democrat bob brady went up to the lectern and swiped pope francis's glass of water. brady said he took it to his office, shared a drink with his wife and two staffers and saved some for his grand children. "the washington post" says brady also took the glass that was used by president obamaç at hi first inauguration. >> he's a glass swiper. >> he is. watch him when you invite him to a dinner party. >> he says, though, i think he's been referring to it as holy water. some people saying it's not been blessed. just what the pope was drinking from. >> it might have been blessed. i don't think they asked pope francis whether or not he did that. it has stirred up a little bit of controversy, people saying

jfk airport. he just left the wall street heliport via chopper, making his way to jfk. once at jfk, he's going to board a plane and make his way to philadelphia. angie, he has a busy itinerary once in philly. >> he absolutely does. this is after a week where he spent addressing congress as well as world leaders at the united nations. a lot of lawmakers, decisionmakers on a national and international level. but now the remainder of his trip is going to be for the people. he will be heading around 10:30 this morning to celebrate mass at cathedral basilica of saint peters and paul. this is where we find eun yang. we'll check in in a few minutes. let's get a check of the forecast first thing. >> tom kierein, you're a bright spot in our morning, even you can't open up those clouds. >> let's say it's a bright gray sky we have here.

he's coming your way. >> reporter: coming my way for sure. we are getting closer to his arrival here in the city of brotherly love. he has a jam packed schedule which has been true to form for his entire trip to the united states. as soon as he touches down here in philadelphia, he will make his way to our area. and the first order of business is a mass at the cathedral, the national cathedral of saints peter and paul. the cathedral basilica. that's right here in our area. this is not a public mass. this is happening at the largest catholic church in pennsylvania here in center city. as you can imagine, the security around the perimeter has been extremely tight. his first open address will happen at independence hall about 4:30 this afternoon. he's expected to address religious freedom and immigration, two very important issues he touched upon in his address to congress in washington, d.c. this location is very fitting, because of course both the declaration independence and the u.s. constitution wereç adopte

here with the first amendment protecting religious freedom in our country. now here's an interesting fact. the pope will speak from a lectern which was used by president abraham lincoln when he delivered the gettysburg address. he wanted this event to be as simple as possible. that is something that will really stand out. tonight is when the pope will attend a huge festival right behind me. you mentioned the benjamin franklin parkway. this is where people have been gathering all morning long for this outdoor event. this will have aretha franklin, jim gaffigan and others. they are going through a lot of security, there are checkpoints and every single person who wants to get into this perimeter will have to walk through a magnetometer and have their bags

checked, hopefully in an orderly fashion. law enforcement saying you have to bring your patience today. >> we know washington and new york, big cities that are prepared for events of this magnitude. how would you say the security setup compares to -- from there in philadelphia to how new york and washington has responded? >> reporter: i think the biggest difference is in washington, d.c., the security was focused around the events where the pope would be, the vatican embassy, there was security around the vatican embassy where he was staying while in washington, d.c. as he made his way to different locations, the basilica of the national shrine of immaculate conception. the police have had to put in layers of security. around the perimeter, everything is shut down, no vehicle traffic, no pedestrians.

as you go layer to layer, there's less security. each individual has to go throughç magnetometers to get any location they'll have a chance to see the pope. the tsa agents are handling the checkpoints. they're going through every single bag. imagine 20 checkpoints and thousands upon thousands of people getting in line to get through the checkpoints. it is going to be very difficult. it might take hours to get these these checkpoints. that's why a lot of people decided to come yesterday and spend the night on the street or come overnight and hope they can get a spot before the security ramps up. they are three or four people deep in terms of where the fence and perimeter are. as the morning wears on, and we get closer to these big events, we'll see large crowds. >> i know you took the train up yesterday. you were part of the planning for this. do you feel like the city, despite all the security, do you feel like it's accessible or do

you feel it is shut down? >> it is accessible, i think because we came early. we wanted to get early, ahead of the security. if you're not here from philadelphia and we know that people from around the world have come here to see the pope and for the world meeting of families. it's somewhat difficult to navigate the streets. a lot of streets were shut off. you're on foot. you have figure out how to get around the perimeter and find your way to the checkpoints. the city has put out maps to get an idea of where to go. you have to plan ahead and plan your trip accordingly so you can get in here before the pope's message begins. >> you can check her out on facebook and twitter. >> i know they gave you a list of things you couldn't bring because of the security measures. the hairspray was one of them, the hair is looking good,

girlfriend. we are keeping our eyes as the pope prepares to board that plane at jfk. we'll b

back with you now live, showing you images as that chopper right there, the helicopter that you often see carrying the president, looks familiar to marine one, similar to that, actually carrying pope francis today. he's just land at jfk. he'll be boarding a plane there and flying to philadelphia for his final two days here in the u.s. it has been a historic four already. >> these two days, this is considered the grand finale, week's biggest events will take place in philadelphia. we take a closer look right now. we know that tonight, this evening, he will be speaking at the festival of families where he is expected to talk about the church's teachings as well as really focus on families.

tom kierein, we want to bring you in. there are some people from our area that plan to head up to philadelphia perhaps later today. and weatherwise, wha are we looking at? >> this pope has brought beautiful weather with him wherever he went. it was beautiful in havana. it was beautiful here in washington and new york. you can see sunshine there in new york. as he goes to philadelphia, later today, just some clouds there. similar to here. although may be weak sunshine, afternoon highs around 70 and for the mass tomorrow it should be beautiful, cloudsç and temperatures in the 60s to around 70 there. no rain. >> that's good news. there are concerns they may see rain drops. i'm sure they will be happy to just have cloud cover there. he's making his way. saying good-bye to some religious funs there. his whirlwind 24 plus hour trip

by cardinal timothy dolan, the archdiocese there in new york. >> the reporters who have had an opportunity to speak with the pope and ask him what is the number one thing you are looking forward to, whether you're going to washington or new york or philadelphia, in this case, as he gets ready to leave new york city. he always says it is the people and it is one thing you can see right off the bat. sometimes, along the trip, as expected, he's looked a little tired. they said at some point he didn't feel quite -- he was dealing with stuff. the moment he touches and sees the people, you can see him light up. it truly is electric. philadelphia is in for a real treat. we're following it every step of the way. we're also following the conditions back here at home because we still have a lot of big things going on around the washington area. and some of those things are happening outside. >> that's right. tom kierein, while you're with us, why done the you give us an update? >> rain to our south.
