our area tonight but wind more than enough to knock-down more trees. >> to our south, the worst is getting started in the caroli carolinas, some expecting up to 10 inches of rain. here is a live look at an active storm radar from south carolina all the way up to new england. >> that's right for most of us. the news has been getting better as the week has gone on as to how bad this storm can be. not everything is out of the woods and this is far from over. >> we have you covered in d.c., maryland and virginia from city streets to the beach. let's begin with chief meteorologist doug kammerer. it is not done with us yet. >> no. i'm the only one out of those four that's actually warm tonight. quite cold and quite windy and quite raw. it's been like that all day and will continue to be like that the next couple of days. that's this long duration nor'easter we have going on. the good news is we can see this on the radar, we're dealing with

light rain and drizzle across the area. there is no heavy rain. the flood threat has really diminished during the afternoon and moderate rain all afternoon and now seeing that light rain around the region, even where it's not picking up the rain around waldorf we're still seeing drizzle. zoom in and look at the latest picture from annapolis to d.c. and leesburg and warrington reporting that light rain. that will continue for the most part overnight tonight. the wider view so showing what's going onto the south, look at the intense rainfall to the caroli carolinas. this is a major problem, talking 10 to 15 inches to the caroli carolinas. for us, this is what we're waiting on towards norfolk and ocean city seeing heavier rain will move in overnight. what about the winds, winds g t gusting at 30 miles an hour, 26 in annapolis, 20 at camp springs. and 33 at the river. ocean city, 40 miles an hour

winds. not only dealing with winds but high tide right now. veronica johnson actually standing in that right now. >> reporter: that's right. there's been spotty flooding throughout ocean city, maryland. this is one of the area, ocean city inlet area, where once again the water is starting to cover the road. it was shortly afternoon-time today there was high tide. the water went all the way to division street. they closed the road and then they opened the road again because the water had receded. take a look because the water is covering my boots again. once again, that water could go as high as 12 feet and some cars making their way through. i do think by early tomorrow morning we will see those roads closed again. we're expecting the coastal flood warning to continue. flooding at its worst saturday and may continue sunday with the storm tide tomorrow about 4 to 4 1/2 feet. the other issue, the wind. take a look at the top of the storm team 4-by-4.

as you mentioned, gusts at 50 miles an hour. earlier today out on the boardwalk, the wind was swirling around and the ferris wheel is getting pushed along by mother nature's wind alone. that's pretty high winds for the weight of that ferris wheel. if there was any good news, temperatures top out in the 70s tomorrow. we'll still have some drizzle. >> all right. veronica johnson for us in ocean city, noisy ocean city. most of the flooding is happening along coastlines, creeks and rivers and streams. look at these pictures from st. mary's county. that water is 3-5 feet higher than normal. check out this in alex sandria old town. in the last half hour, the tide has been rolling in and some streets under water now. jackie bensen is right in the middle of it.

>> reporter: i am right in the middle of it. we're at the foot of king street at the strand. this is tidal flooding. they are very used to it. i want to show you what's going on behind us over here. the thai restaurant there, they have it so down, you can see the sandbags in front. they actually completed their dinner service, closed, managed to get everyone out of there, they moved their cars, like clockwork because this happens so often. around alexandria earlier tonight we got some pictures of the sandbags that have been put out. they've been put in place just in case this happened this evening, the sandbags give people a little extra margin of what they want to avoid, which is the flooding inside. most of these businesses here have cement floors and basements if they have them that clean up very easily. they are very much used to this. it has absolutely no effect on business. people come down to see it around virginia tonight.

we were in arlington earlier where a tree crashed onto the back of a home, a very large tree. luckily it just hit the porch of the home and didn't break the roof or main body of the house. everybody was okay and that is certainly a big relief for those folks. they will be dealing with the damage of that for a while. what we saw throughout northern virginia tonight, mostly just rain. as you all described, about 10:30, high tide came in with a rush, up over the curve here on king street and it will go right back out when the tide leaves. live in alexandria. news4. >> be safe get back. neighbors to the south already under water and more is yet to come for them. low-lying areas in coastal virginia, like norfolk and yorktown have seen up to a foot of floodwater today swamping a lot of cars. check out charleston, south carolina, the water there, thigh

deep tonight. the flooding has am track suspending some service farther to our south that includes the autotrain that travels between wharton and sanford, florida. the home coming parade is a school tradition for howard but the school was forced to cancel it. what it means and why and what it means for the rest of home coming weekend. first, that small town in oregon is still processing what happened after a gunman opened fire at a community college and killed nine people there. as investigators try to figure out why he did it, president obama keeps pressing congress to make gun control a priority. wendy wolf reports from roseburg. >> lucas from roseburg, 18 years old. >> they are not just faces. each has their own story. >> he was an umpqua college

could have done that. i don't know if i could have done that. >> anna's doctors say tonight she should make a full recovery. >> that's remarkable. we're in the middle of a nine day stretch when six inmates are supposed to be executed nationwide. last night alfredo prieto received a lethal injection in virginia. at least six will be spared. just a few hours ago, the governor delayed that of a man accused of killing his ex-wife and others had to be called off and richard's execution had to be put on hold and two others have to be put on hold while the state investigates the mix-up. jesse matthew will face life in prison pf today, a judge handed matthew the harshest sentence possible, a life term for each of the three counts in

that 2005 case. matthew was also charged with the murders of college students hannah graham and morgan harrington. matthew's mother screamed out after the judge read each count. outside court, jill harrington, morgan's mother, told her she recognized those screams. >> i have heard that same ugly gut sound coming from my mouth when i heard my daughter had been killed. >> matthews trial for the murder of morgan harrington is set for next october. he'll be tried in the hannah graham case before that in july and could face the death penalty in that case. next at 11:00. >> reporter: thousands of alumnae students are in town for howard university's home coming. how they're trying to make the best of this soggy weekend. plus, two local computer prodigys are found guilty of hacking and trying to crack the state department. changing stories, the

obtain passport data and broke into a local company's database stealing information they used to win contracts for their own country. one was sentenced to three years in prison and the other got two years. weekend events keep on po pouring in as the region gueets socked with rain day after day. shomari is at howard university where the alumnae are trying to make the most of the home coming weekend. >> reporter: i can deal with this rain. it's the cold that is bone chilling. a lot of folks telling me they are disappointed this weekend the howard university home coming parade was canceled and a lot of folks tell me they're disappointed. >> it's definitely killed the vibe. >> reporter: this isn't the home coming troy expected. rain and wind ruined the mood. >> it put a damper on it and a lot of people don't want to come out because it's too cold. >> reporter: so much howard canceled the annual parade

a tornado that hit tuesday night and caused all this damage. we got a lock how this twist ee punched holes in roofs and tore down signs and smashed windows. no owoone fortunately was hurt. >> you hear shomari and jackie both complaining about the cold. >> it is on the cold side, so cold it's important for this weekend. normally the sports guy is not here. he's all ears. >> i have no place else to go. >> the rain will continue. it will stay on the cold side, too. temperatures really are quite chilly outside. temperatures in many areas all the way down to the mid 40s. oakland and maryland, 39 degrees right now. yeah. a little bit of a cooldown for sure. more rain overnight. localized and coastal flooding, not anticipating much flash flooding. it will continue to be very raw

right through saturday and right through sunday. you can kind of see it. it just looks raw outside. current temperature only 50 degrees, winds out of the northeast at the airport at 17 miles an hour and gusting at 20 miles an hour at some locations. we have seen an inch at annapolis and at the river, 2 in inches. westchester only about a quarter inch and martinsburg and leesburg not reporting and did see a half-inch and that's why we didn't see any flooding and didn't see those 4 and 5 inch rain totals. that is very good news. you can see it movie ing up fro the south. this is light rain and drizzle currently around the region. as we move to the south and east, i want to turn your attention what's going on across the atlantic coming onshore and developing. this is some heavier larain we

will see tonight. i don't expect it to be too heavy in terms of flooding but moderate towards tomorrow. no reds or oranges here. look at the south, look at this moisture plume coming off the towards the carolinas tonight and could see 10 to 15 inches in some locations and under states of emergency as well. this will be a major problem. we will see video for days out of south carolina and north carolina. rain likely for us tomorrow. wind impact, not good on roads and you may see trees or limbs down. tomorrow, scattered showers, i think we're back in the green sunday and talking about scattered showers. here's hurricane joaquin still a very powerful storm but finally finally moving away northeast 10 miles an hour out to the shown, winds of 125 miles an hour. take a look at the track.

even the sky is crying about the national season. the start to the season with the mets in new york supposed to mean so much to the mets wiped out by rain and will be made up tomorrow with a double-header. orioles and yankees will also play a split admission double-header at camden yards while redskins are gearing up for one big game sunday. yeah, the rain. today, redskins practiced inside the bubble but did rain prep, dousing footballs with water and putting emphasis protecting the
