news 4 today starts now. well, while you were sleeping, flood watches around our region expired. this as hurricane joaquin mo weakens in strength. >> how long the showers on the radar are going to last. 6:00, breaking news in northeast d.c. this morning. a triple shooting leaves one man dead. happened after 1:00 this morning on eighth street. what was a very active scene. police shutting down several roads in that area as they investigated. two other men taken to the hospital, expected to be okay. so far police do not have a suspect. we'll keep you updated on it as soon as we get more information. it has been a busy morning

to start us off, good morning to you. >> welcome to news 4 today. top story this morning though, this weekend's weather. we have two systems, potentially working against us. >> hurricane joaquin is weakening as it continues its path along the east coast. the national hurricane center says joaquin is now a category three storm. it left the bahamas and so far it is staying out to sea. >> there's no all-clear yet. it could lead to serious flooding. parts of carolinas could get up to 15 inches of rain. it's for that reason, we're going to bring in our meteorologist, tracking all of rain and some wind. >> yeah, how long is all this going to last? >> here for the morning hours, some lingering, light rain i'm happy to report that any flood threat is long gone. we've got about an inch to inch and a half yelled and overnight. one wave of rain came through. now things are improving quickly here on this saturday morning. it's going to stay damp for the

rest of the day. the wave of the darker greens and yellows, that's the more moderate rate, now it's in the panhandle. west virginia, way out here in parts of west virginia. we're getting some moderate rain here strasburg and south of there into the panhandle. we've. lighter green, just some very light rain. there's one area maybe coming down harder here in the dark green in prince george's county. that's advancing off to the north and east. on the eastern shore, rainfall forecast for the rest of the day. over the next 24 hours, we might pick up an additional half an inch and mostly just sprinkles and drizzles. maybe just around the blue ridge additional rain, but not enoughle to cause any flooding. a look at improving news. when we'll see the sun, that's coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you much, tom. there's some flooding. neighbors and business owners are hoping sand wags will keep

the water from coming in. most have dealt with this problem before and say they don't expect a major impact. flood watch is still in effect for the coast of south carolina as hurricane joaquin moves. up the coast. the myrtle beach area remains. under the watch through tomorrow. they are expecting eight to 12 inches of rain in that area alone. more bad news as beach erosion has the potential for coastal flooding, creating a possible for risk. howard university making the most of their homecoming weekend with the deer ri weather. their parade was canceled. not all are rained out. students were packed in an auditorium for an indoor concert, that's what you're looking at right there. that was last night. several big events this weekend have either had the to change their schedule or cancel because of the storm. the maryland/michigan game in college park, that got moved puppet race for every child has

college. >> i don't know how we're going to move forward with our lives without clint. our lives are shattered beyond repair. >> reporter: without many answers, investigators are still trying to determine what made christopher harper mercer snap. after just enrolling in community college, why did he turn his arsenal of weapons on his fellow students? >> one person's deranged act may have indeed broken all of our hearts, but he cannot prevent our hearts from growing back bigger and stronger. >> reporter: but for yet another community struck by this national nightmare, that will take time. in roseberg, oregon, nbc news. >> the shooter was heavily armed. investigators found six guns at the community college. they go to his apartment and find seven more. the atf said all of the weapons were bought legally. some of them bought by the shooter or his family members in the last three years.

he was a student in the class where that shooting took place. the gunman also flunked out of basic training for the army, that was back in 2008. >> out of all of the tragedy in oregon, we are hearing remarkable stories. those who came face to face with the shooter and survived. like 18-year-old anna boylan, she's now alert and talking after undergoing surgery to have a bullet removed from her spine. her family says she played dead after she was hit to avoid being shot again. >> the calm it took to not lose it in a situation like that. she's so brave. she's so strong and courageous. and she did exactly what she had to do. i don't know how many people could have done that, i don't know if i could have done that. >> reporter: >> the doctors say she should make a full recovery. jesse matthew will serve three life terms in prison for sexual assaulting and trying to murder a woman in fairfax. on friday, a judge handed him the harshest sentence possible,

life term for each of the three counts in the 2005 case. matthews also charged with the murders of hannah graham and morgan herrington in charlotteville. those happened five years apart. his mother screamed in the courtroom. it was very dramatic after the judge read each of those counts. matthews trial for the murder of morgan herrington, that's scheduled for next october. first he's going to be tried in the hannah graham case in july. he could face the death penalty in that case. new details in an officer-involved shooting in prince william county. why officers were justified in shooting a man. then what really happened in that meeting between the pope and the kentucky clerk fighting the same-sex marriage? well, the vatican clearing things up and news of another private meeting that we didn't even know about. with a threat of storms, the time now is to trim those trees, but beware of some compani

we have new details this morning in a prince william continue officer-involved shooting. police sought a man they say was creeping in the bushes outside of a woman's home on lake drive in manassas last month. that shooting has been ruled justified. the suspect, jonathan diaz chavez is counted with malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer. investigators say that he raised a crowbar at that officer and that is when the officer pepper sprayed him. he ran and then threatened the officer again with the crowbar and according to police, that is when the officer fired. he will appear in court next month. we know more about the pope francis's so-called private meeting with kentucky clerk kim davis.

it's true the two did meet while he was in d.c. last week, but davis was one of dozens of people the pope greeted that day. the vatican says the encounter should not be considered a form of support for her position. you'll remember, davis was the county clerk to refused to authorize marriage licenses to same-sex couples and ended up in jail for it. the pope met with other couples, one of them is a former student of the pope's. he didn't talk specifically about same-sex marriage, he described it as catching up with an old friend. storm team 4 radar showing light showers all day long, but tomorrow could be a different story. we are tracking how long before the relief. some of apple's users getting higher bills, if you're one of

this weekend. part'east ooe'easter aej joaquin. >> reporter: hey guys, how are you today? >> good, how are you? >> reporter: it's a little chilly out here, i'll tell you that much. if you're watching from home. stay inside. not only do we have the rain, but we have the wind as well. very, very chilly conditions, but i want to update everybody on hurricane joaquin, it is now a category three and finally, moving away from the bahamas, but look at it the, it sweeps right near bermuda, it's a category one by the time it heads through bermuda or just by it. and it gradually going to weaken and only three to five inches of rain in that region compared to the bahamas. yes, it'll weaken, and we have a little bit of sheer. we're getting rain here now, not directly necessarily related to

joaquin, but we are pulling a lot of moisture from joaquin into the region and coming from auner level low over towards portions of the southeast. we're seeing flooding in areas coastal flooding. be prepared for that if you live along the river, but also be prepared for this wind, it's really taking up. that's going to be with us for much of the day, angie. >> don't blow away, lauren, get back inside, quickly. thanks. developing story right now from the white house, president obama says that he rejected russia's military actions against syria. the president vowed to continue with his strategy of supporting rebelso oppose syria's president. he also dismissed the idea that russia was strengthen its hand in the region. it's raising questions about vladimir putin's strategy. >> the acting education secretary stepped down in december. he and his wife and kids moved back to chicago a few months ago so he decided to leave the job.

he is one of the longest running education secretaries in history before he was deputy education secretary, john cain was the education commissioner. more than two years away, but the race for virginia's next governor is heating up. the washington post is reporting that ed gillespie, the former republican senate nominee plans to run in 2017. no word from gillaspie's camp though. right now there is only one running on the democratic side. all right. nice welcomed sight on a saturday. this is the first weekend the haunted house is open at pax ton manner. in leesburg. the shocktober event is in its sixth year. >> there's nothing likes this.

threat, i'm happy to report,est that all over with. we have lingering sprinkles, little bit of drizzle to deal with this morning, if you're planning on heading out today, have an umbrella handy, but hang on to the umbrella because of the gusty winds. they're gusting around 30 miles an hour this morning. look at storm team 4 radar now. the heaviest rain we had come through over several hours ago are now pushing into the mountains of western maryland and western virginia. they're diminishing. just a few lingering sprinkles, maybe just light rain now in loudoun county, fairfax, montgomery, prince georges, and east of sprinkles around the bay down to cal vert county. west of the metro area, south of 66, generally just light rain there. so the flood threat is over and going forward through the rest of the day. here's the future weather. by mid-afternoon, the areas in green, just scattered sprinkles and drizzles. then by 4:00, 5:00, we'll still

have some lingering sprinkles and drizzle around much of the region, heavy rains well, well south of the carolinas getting a lot of rain out of this, but just patchy light showers, maybe moderate showers around the blue ridge later this evening. total amounts of rain, areas in blues, up to a half inch today, that'll be it. might get an inch or higher in these areas in the lavender around the central blue ridge to the southern shenandoah valley, west of charlottesville. temperatures are chilly, this is what november, october, it feels more like november. we're in the upper 40s to mid-40s north and west of the metro area. shenandoah valley into the mountains there, look at oakland, maryland, 37 degrees in oakland. 20 degrees warmer in tax river. wet streets in northwest from our tower camera, wet streets and roads all around the renal. watch out for ponding of water on some of the ramps off the interstate. we'll be in the low 50s by 8:00

underwater. river gajs on the chesapeake bay under flood levels. down the coast, charleston, south carolina, is drenched. people wading in thigh-deep water. >> please don't drive through it anyway. the saying is don't drown, turn around. if the road is flooded, there's no reason for you to go through. >> reporter: hurricane joaquin is still battering the bahamas and the coast guard is searching for a cargo ship with 33 people on board that disappeared from radar yesterday. hurricane hunter planes flew low in the eye of the storm to help find the missing ship. the coast guard also rescued 12 people who abandoned another vessel. took on water near haiti. >> survivor halfway up. >> reporter: intense preparations are spanning nearly a dozen states. six declared states of emergency. the nypd getting ready for flash floods for deflatable rafts. strong wind and heavy surf slamming into the jersey shore.

you're watching news 4 today. former d.c. mayor vinson grey is considering a run for council next year. sources tell news 4 that grey told several people he may run at large. gray remains under federal investigation for the shadow campaign that helped him win the mayor's office in 2010. he has not been charged and has denied any wrong doing in that. gray lost his reelection bid last year. those of you affected by the massive data breach at opm should be getting a letter in the mail soon. it'll contain information about free identity theft protection services available to victims.

back in july, we learned that hackers stole personal information from more than 22 million current and former federal workers, contractors, and their spouses. opm announced last week that fingerprints were also stolen from roughly five million of the victims. twin brothers from springfield, virginia, are headed to prison for their hacking schemes. news 4 spoke with the man last year when he was investigated by or for writing a program that could add value to gift cards. he and his brother pleaded guilty to stealing credit card information and hacking the state department to obtain password data. they also broke into a local company's data base stealing information they used to try and win contracts for their own tax plans. sentenced more than three years of prison. rain and wind today as we look at all that green and turquoise on the radar, but, tom is saying things will look a little different in the next 24

for this time of year. it is in the low 70s, we're not anywhere near that. blustery winds as we get into the rest of the day. right now we have gusts around 25, 30 miles an hour with some little areas of rain that are only sprinkles and drizzles. right now around the immediate metro area. looking for storm team 4 radar, you can see well off to the north and west, areas of darker greens and yellows, that's where it it's raining a little bit hard and the high resolution close up radar now showing a few pockets of some light rain, moderate rain, this dark green here in northern montgomery county through the potomac southern loudoun county and the northern fairfax around great falls getting a moderate shower there. some in montgomery county, few areas of moderate showers right now from near kensington and east of there towards silver springs. then much further east, only a few scattered sprinkles around, prince george's county, and

there's some light to moderate showers along the blue ridge, further west, the areas in the green, these are the zones that are not getting rain. just a few scattered sprinkles through the afternoon hours and maybe a little bit of light rain, but any rain that may be harder is going to be confined to the shenandoah valley. all the way into the evening hours, total rainfall amount, certainly about a half inch around the metro area, maybe an inch or more, generally this this lavender zone out of the mountain for the day ahead. and temperatures will remain chilly, right now we're in the 40s, only in the mid-40s out of the mountains in the 40s, even upper 30s near 50 around washington and the bay. so you're exercising this morning and jumping over puddles and we'll be rather chilly. in the 50s the rest of the day. upper 50s this afternoon with a drizzle around and blustery
