news4 has team coverage tonight. veronica johnson is in ocean city, but we start with our meteorologist who joins us in the weather center. >> right now, i'm continuing to track areas of drizzle and light showers on radar. this is going to be the case throughout the night tonight, and into at least your sunday morning. you can see very light in nature, but if you are heading out tonight, you want to grab the rain jacket or umbrella. it's chilly and breezy. only at 58 degrees. 9:00 we dip down to about 56. a cool, damp 55 degrees, parts of our area are under a coastal flood warning. this includes st. mary's county. coastal flood advisory for parts of the district, alexandria, arlington, falls church. this is going to run through sunday night. in the more flood prone areas, this includes the southwest water front and old town. we're seeing minor flooding in low lying areas.

that could continue to be the case throughout the day tomorrow into your sunday evening and very early monday morning, as tides run about 2 1/2 feet above normal. ocean city under a coastal flood warning. that's going to run throughout the day tomorrow that's where veronica johnson was earlier today checking out the conditions there. >> reporter: here in ocean city, maryland, moderate flooding remains in the forecast through the weekend for key areas like here just off the bay. this is where ocean city preparedness say is zone b and where they will continue to monitor closely. zone a, from division street down to the water, this is the area covered yesterday for a time. it was closed when as much as 12 inches of water covered the road. we have high tide at 1:00 a.m. and sunday afternoon between

1:00 and 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon. a combination of breaking waves 6 to 10 feet and tides that will continue here in ocean city to stay under a coastal flood warning. the other concern, the wind. while the gusts have come down from friday, they'll top out today between 40 and 45 miles per hour. those high winds along with the crashing high waves will create more beach emotion through possibly tuesday. all this with events like a big car show still going on in ocean city, maryland. folks are trying to keep their sense of humor and making the most of a wet and wild weekend at the beach. >> we're all the way down from pennsylvania. what a weekend. do you see those out there? >> yes. >> are you looking? >> well, it's interesting. i've been coming to ocean city for a long, long time. and never really witnessed it firsthand. so that's why we came down here today to see it firsthand. >> further south, they are dealing with historic flooding. meteorologists are calling it a

once every 1,000 year event. lots of areas have seen more than a foot of rain. the storm has also killed one person and there are more than 20,000 power outages across the carolinas, and the rain machine isn't expected to stop until monday. the roads on this island in south carolina are shut down and one person stuck there is news4's doreen gensler. so much for the r&r. thanks for joining us. >> up until the last couple of days it's been lovely. this is normally a wonderful place to come on vacation. i've never seen anything quite like this. the highest tides since hurricane hugo hit here 26 years ago.

it looks like a hurricane out on the beaches here. the astronomical high tide has contributed a lot to this. but there is a lot of flooding, up to some parts -- this is a barrier island. some parts of the roads on the island we're told are under four feet of water. >> you mentioned the roads. how are you expected to get out of there, you and so many of the other individuals that are there, enjoying their time off, how do you get out of there? >> we're trying to figure that out. some big, tall suvs are able to move through some of the waters. so we're trying to see if we can't hitch a ride.

so we're trying to figure that out. the planes are still coming and going, so if we can get to the airport, i think we will be able to get out okay. >> doreen, thanks for joining us. please be safe in your travels and we'll see you back at home. thanks again. >> all right. thank you, erica. a desperate search at sea for that cargo ship that vanished right as hurricane joaquin hit the bahamas. the coast guard says they have not been in contact with the ship since the captain put out a distress call thursday. the captain said the ship was taking on water and had lost propulsion southeast of the bahamas. 33 crew members, mostly americans, are on that ship. it set sail from jacksonville on tuesday and was headed to puerto rico. make sure you check out our new interactive radar. it lets you track storms down to your neighborhood. we'll also send out critical

alerts to your phone when watches and warnings are issued. we've got developing news on the mass shooting at an oregon community college. this afternoon, the local sheriff announced 26-year-old chris mercer killed himself after shooting and killing nine others. investigators also say he left a lengthy manifesto but did not go into what the message was. mercer's family released a statement today saying their thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families of those killed or injured. a triple shooting leaves one man dead and investigators with a lot of questions in a busy part of the district. three men were found with gunshot wounds this morning on the 700 block of h street northeast. one was pronounced dead on scene. police say they do not have a suspect at this time. we're working the story now and will have an update for you as soon as we learn more. we're still working several developing stories. an apparent u.s. air strike hits

a charity hospital in afghanistan. american doctors are among the dead. what the u.s. military is saying. plus, an openly gay caterer here

developing now, chaos in the streets of brooklyn. one person is dead, at least three others injured after part

of a building exploded. more than 100 firefighters are working that scene tonight. the front of the building blown right off. it's still unclear what caused that blast. the u.s. military is opening an investigation after american troops appear to have bombed a hospital in the african city of kunduz. the commander of u.s. troops in afghanistan says forces conducted air strikes in the vicinity of the hospital this morning, but did not confirm that they actually hit the hospital. he says the strikes were directed at insurgents firing on u.s. service members on the ground. doctors without boarders runs that hospital. they say 19 people were killed. word of a new private meeting with the pope emerging and it involves a same-sex couple here in d.c. >> a beacon of light in the world. >> why this man says he's

the openly gay d.c. resident who had a special meeting with pope francis. the two talked at the vatican embassy here in northwest. news4 derek ward sat down with him and asked him what this moment meant to him. >> i think that he -- >> reporter: he's known the man we know as pope francis for more than a half a century. >> he was my professor in high school. he caught us literature and psychology. >> reporter: he says now the pope's message holds a resonance. >> when i hear the speeches today, all i have to do is close my eyes. it's like he is, i'm still in the classroom. >> reporter: he called upon his old professor when he thought it would be in washington, though he doubted he would fit in the schedule. at first, heg said he didn't want to go public about the

meeting. but then he said he wanted to talk about his meeting because of another meeting that happened here. it was the meeting with kim davis, the county clerk from kentucky, famous to some, infamous to others, for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. he said davis' account doesn't jive with the pope francis he has known for years. >> he ended up saying i can guaranty you that in my service, there is no place for homophobia. >> reporter: the vatican released a statement saying davis' meeting with the form should not be considered support. officials say davis was just one of dozens who met with pope francis. he says he sees his old teacher as head of the catholic church and more. >> an icon, a beacon, i'm sorry, of light in the world. >> reporter: derek ward, news4. >> one of the most mustery days

and especially tomorrow morning around 7:00 a.m. we'll continue to track drizzle and we'll start off with a temperature of about 54. after that, for the midday afternoon and evening hours, there's only the chance of a shower but we should be dry for the bulk of the day, especially during the afternoon and evening. breezy to windy. luvenlgtime, temperatures in the upper 50s. low to mid 60s, a high in washington of 64. 7:00 still at a cool 56 degrees. so walking the dog tomorrow a little better than today. here's the later on joaquin. currently a very impressive category 4 hurricane with winds at 150 miles per hour, forecast to pass just to the west of bermuda throughout the day tomorrow. so if it tracks further to the east, that could have major problems for the island throughout the day tomorrow. but it is forecast to weaken down to a category 3 hurricane

and continue out to sea as it weakens. so still staying well out of our area, having no impact here in washington. we're seeing rain and winds from the nor'easter that is bringing us these persistent, chilly damp northeasterly winds. tomorrow at the redskins game, 1:00 kickoff, a shower is possible, but windy down at fedex field. temperatures in the low to mid 60s. on monday, sunshine returns. we finish off the day partly to mostly sunny. 68 for a high on monday. then beautiful sunshine tuesday through friday. high temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. the chance of showers next saturday. right now that looks to be early in the day. partly sunny and a high of 74. >> thanks, amelia. we have a big right now here on nbc 4.
