kristin, good morning. >> reporter: aaron, naturally people are frustrated and people are worried, particularly about how much it could cost so how much? aaron mentioned $58 a week. that's $17 in tolls a day. we are on 66 east right now in falls church where as you can see traffic is slowing down. v dot said it would ease congestion. they were at a vdot meeting last night talking about all of this. we were there, too, and heard from a lot of you at a loss really because you're tired of the horrible traffic on 6 but you don't know if you can pay the tolls. there is another public information meeting tonight at washington lee high school in arlington.

that is happening from 7:00 to 9:00. there is also a meeting next week on october 15th at farm well station middle school. that's in ashburn. that meeting is from 7:00 to 9:00. if the tolls happen, they would start in summer of 2017. so in about two years. if you're concerned about this, make your voice heard. back to you. >> bet there will be a big crowd. kristin wright live. thank you, kristin. want to break this down for you and put this in print. this would not start until about 2017. if you drive during peak hours you can expect to pay $9 in the morning and $8 on your way home. that's about $17 per trip. that adds up to about $85 every week for these tolls. $4400 a year. or, about what you would need to pay off an $18,000 car on a five-year loan. you can avoid the highest tolls if you meet the hov requirements. eun. right now in south carolina the capitol's water supply is

dwindling. emergency crews and members of the national guard are working to plug up a hole in a canal that makes up columbia's main water supply. they have maintained some kind of level in the canal at this hour, however, city managers say the problem could leave even more people without water. they're also warning even more dams could fail today. tens of thousands of people have no water and hundreds of thousands are under a boil water advisory right now. 15 people in south carolina and two in neighboring states have died. the rain there is over though. south carolina's governor says it is too early to estimate the cost of all of this damage. east of columbia we are following the efforts of virginia task force one. they are among the crews assessing the damage down there. fema sent a team from fairfax county earlier this week. take a look. you can see there assisting in the cleanup efforts there. they were also performing water rescues and delivering water and supplies.

great britain's thomas lindol and paul modreck and american and turkish citizen were awarded the nobel prize in chemistry. sankar is a professor of biochemistry at the university of north carolina. the three scientists were honored for their studies and work on dna repair, how to repair dna. and on friday coming up the nobel prize in literature will be announced tomorrow. actually, that's the next prize to be announced. then the nobel peace prize will be announced on friday and we wi have it all covered. back to you. angie, thank you. it's five minutes after the hour. today jury selection in the charles severance trial heads into day three. the judge has dismissed about half of the 150 potential jurors because that six-week trial would pose a hardship for them.

now each remaining juror will have to answer questions about media exposure and whether he or she could be fair and impartial. severance is charged with murdering three alexandria residents over the course of ten years. opening statements could start as soon as tomorrow. in the day ahead, baltimore will pay almost $100,000 to settle a lawsuit. it says baltimore police gave christine abbott a rough ride on the way to jail. she says she was slammed against the wall during 2012. the settlement comes as six officers are ready to be tried for freddy gray's death. for the second time a judge has denied a defense request to move the trial out of baltimore. the defense alleges news articles published by the "baltimore sun" on this case have tainted the jury pool. the "sun" reported that the officer, william porter, told police investigators he warned

the driver that he needed medical attention and porter said he informed sergeant alicia white that gray needed medical attention. white says that never happened. officer william porter's trial set to begin november 30th. 6:07. a not guilty plea from former assistant to vincent gray. d.c. businessman reuben charles was indicted on two counts of failing to file his federal income taxes. the charges are part of a long-running investigation into the shadow campaign that helped elect vincent gray as mayor of d.c. in 2010. charles was a major fund-raiser. the deadly shooting at an oregon college is getting political. what one of the presidential candidates is saying about what happened and what he would have done if he were there. and right now slowdowns in two major spots. first of all, 95 northbound as you're headed through dale city. chopper 4 over 66. first new developments overnight involving the

it is now 6:11. new developments this morning about volkswagen and when you could have your car fixed. vw's ceo says the company will start recalling 11 million cars in january. the cars have the illegal diesel engine with software used to rig emission tests. volkswagen plans to have all the cars updated and fixed by the end of next year. >> 6:11 is the time. we'll start with a look outside this morning. we saw a few clouds roll in a little bit earlier. >> tom kierein says it is shaping up to be a nice day once again. love this weather, tom. >> it is. kind of a dream like state yesterday. wonderful and today a bit milder. clouds are floating through now not producing any rain. storm team 4 radar all clear,

new reaction coming into the tragedy in oregon. christopher harper mercer killed nine people. ben carson says gun control reform should not be how people respond. according to "usa today" he said gun free zones attract shooters and that we could limit that by giving teachers guns. another advocate of gun rights, roseberg's mayor spoke to nbc news. >> if it will help you any better, i am a republican. i am a strong supporter of my gun rights and i want him here, too. so please go back into your committee and you tell him please show up in roseburg.

>> president obama will be in that community this friday and could address gun control reform. a 20-year-old man in -- is d.c.'s latest murder victim. police say someone shot muhammad washington in the middle of the day yesterday. washington was on his way to a corner store at 42nd street northeast. this morning d.c. police have no suspects and no motive. it was a 74-year-old husband and father of two who died after a confrontation with security guards at med star washington hospital center. the washington post reporting d.c. police reports say a vertebra in james mcbride's death was broken when he died last week. he was a patient there. he walked out before he was formally discharged. the confrontation happened as a nurse escorted him back inside. this morning a house committee will look at the issue of drones and safety. the panel will determine whether an unmanned aircraft makes it unsafe for planes and helicopters. the faa deputy administrator and

the president of the airline pilots association will testify. a developing story this morning. new york's attorney general is investigating fantasy sports sites. the inquiry comes over accusations that employees are using inside information to win money. major league baseball also demanding some answers here. the league has an ownership stake in draft kings. this all started because a draft kings employees won $350,000 on rival site fan duel in what many say amounts to insider trading. espn is pulling all of its draft kings sponsored segments but will still air segments. comcast, the parent company of nbc 4, is also an investor in fan duel. vice president joe biden's office is pushing back against an article from politico. it says he made a calculated call to a "new york times" columnist to tell her that beau's dieing wish was for him

to run for president again. they call the politico report categorically false and finds it offensive. new video this morning of a semi truck flipping over on a busy highway. that truck went over the median and flipped on its side. the driver walked away from the crash. this happened in detroit. the driver said that he lost control when a car cut in front of him. the interstate was shut down for hours after that crash. look at that, wow. well, in just a matter of weeks a private ambulance could show up if you call 911 in the district. the d.c. council approved outsourcing to a third party ambulance. they're struggling to meet calls. under the new plan d.c. fire and e.m.s. will remain first responders on all 911 calls. they say this deal is a band aid approach to the problem.

officials will test out the new plan for a year and review how it's working. maryland is the newest state to be affected by a salmonella outbreak. the centers for disease control and prevention says one person in the state is infected bringing the total number of states to 35. four people have died in more than 700 others have been infected. investigators found the salmonella in cucumbers in mexico and distributed by a san diego company. new numbers on how much money maryland casinos are bringing in. the five casinos in the state took an $87.5 million in september. that is a 6% increase from last year. however, it's about a $10 million decline from august and it's unclear why. well, this might be the ultimate lost and found. actor tom hanks trying to help out a fordham university student. hangs found the student's i.d. in the park so he went to twitter of course. he tweeted this, lauren, i found your student i.d. in the park.

dedicated spot after a mother was told to pump milk in a pet relief area. united airlines will apologize to liz cooper, the mom who asked on monday where she could pump breast milk. she was told she could use the bathroom and they said it was unsanitary and that's where they suggested the pet relief area. there is a sense of optimism. the government's poll of employees say people are happier at work this year than they were last year. employee engagement apparently is up right now. employee opinions of upper management, those opinions are more positive. they're on the rebound, actually, from a five-year low in 2014. more than 420,000 people who took the survey say they felt they could advance their careers and get the training they needed to do that. expectant fathers may be struggling with depression. according to a new canadian study, about 13% of dads who -- dads to be, we should say, who

angie goff with breaking news. two people are missing after a pickup truck flew off the short cliff where the road had washed out. now the truck was reportedly washed away. we know at this point that three people made it out alive. there were five people in the truck at the time. the survivors telling investigators that the driver went around a barricade before it went off the embankment. we will continue following the ongoing search for the two missing people. that's the latest from the live desk.

pepco exelon merger will lower costs, create reliability and increase jobs. not everyone is on board. there are $78 million in benefits to the district. there will be money set aside to offset rate increases until 2019. some lawmakers are worried about what happens in the long run. >> believe this settlement is in the best interests of the district now and for our future. >> they have put a little dress on this deal, okay? it's fancy, it looks nice but in a couple of years you'll see the reality of what this deal means to us and it's not good. >> exelon also says it will relocate workers and hire new ones in the district. the d.c. public service commission still needs to approve the deal. right now prince william county police want your help to find a missing woman. penny laurel wolf went missing from manassas yesterday. this is her photo right here. she was last seen on lafayette street.

she is 53 years old. police say wolf may not be able to get around on her own. if you think you can help call prince william county police. developing in waldorf maryland police want to find two men who shot a teenager in order to steal his bike. this happened on a bike path yesterday afternoon. the teen was able to flag down a school bus driver for help. students at nearby eva turner elementary school activated their shelter in place plan during the incident. the victim is expected to be okay. it is now 6:34 today. search and rescue crews will continue looking for survivors from a ship lost during hurricane joaquin. the search continues as new questions arise about the captain and crew. the elfaro ran into hurricane joaquin on its way from jacksonville, florida, to puerto rico. many are wondering why the captain set sail during the hurricane. el faro's owners say they were not under any pressure to sail through the storm to deliver the cargo on time.

33 crew members were on board the ship when it sank. if you intentionally disabled a metro bus you could face jail time. at least that's what one d.c. council member wants to have happen. jack evans introduced legislation that would make it a crime to disable a bus. earlier this summer we reported on teenagers using the emergency stop switch on the outside of the bus so it wouldn't run. well, evans' proposal includes a maximum $300 fine, 90 days in jail or 30 days of kmoo unin it at this service. it could cost tens of thousands of dollars to reprint some election ballots in prince william county. the potomac local news reports that several candidates' names are not printed the way the candidates wanted them. it could cost as much as $100,000 to reprint the ballots. the county election board will meet tonight to decide whether to reprint them or put signs with the correct names at the polling sites. this morning instead of grabbing your car keys grab your jacket and walk your student to school. today is international walk to

impartial. severance is accused of murdering three alexandria residents over the course of ten years. opening statements could start as soon as tomorrow. in the day ahead baltimore will pay nearly $100,000 to settle a federal lawsuit. the suit accuses baltimore police officers of giving christine abbott a, quote, rough ride on her way to jail. abbott said she was slammed against a police transport van wall during her ride in 2012. the settlement comes as the city prepares to try six police officers. for the second time a judge has denied a defense request to move the trial out of baltimore. the defense alleges that news articles published by the "baltimore sun" on this case have tainted the jury pool. the "sun" reported that officer william porter told police investigators he warned the van's driver that gray needed medical attention. porter also told investigators

he informed sergeant alicia white that gray needed medical attention. white said that never happened. officer porter's trial set to begin november 30th. later today you can let v dot developers know exactly how you feel about the future of i-66. the plan is to add tolls between d.c. and the beltway, toll that is could set you back $85 a week. kristin wright joins us from 66 where the morning rush is in full effect. these tolls are pretty hefty, kristin. >> reporter: yeah, right. right. the plan is to ease congestion. v dot saying that these tolls will just get rid of some of the congestion that we see every day on 66. we are out, as eun mentioned, in the thick of it right now on 66 east in falls church. we're actually moving right now, but you know what, in just a few minutes we could be completely stopped as always. so how much for these new tolls? as much as $17 a day round trip.

that would be the maximum toll. the new tolls would be inside the beltway during rush hour only. so there is a public meeting about this tonight at washington lehigh school in arlington from 7:00 to 9:00. also there's a meeting next week on the 15th at farmwell middle school in ashburn from 7:00 to 9:00. if you have something to say about this, now is the time. v dot's proposed plan is to start the new tolls in about two years, in the summer of 2017. back to you guys. >> all right, kristin wright. thank you. we want to break down exactly what the tolls could cost you and when. again, they would not start until 2017. so if you drive during peak hours, expect to pay $9 in the morning and 8 on your way home. that's a total of $17 per day. now that adds up to about $85 per week, $4400 for one year or about what you need to pay off an $18,000 car or a 5-year loan.
