avoid what could have been another school shooting incident. this was the long line of parents streaming into the campus that contains three culpeper schools including culpeper high. they were on lockdown much of the day. chopper 4 captured the scene from above as worried parents waited in the parking lot to meet up with their children. a 15-year-old freshman is in custody tonight accused of threatening to shoot others. this is the pickup truck he was driving when he turned himself in to authorities. upon they later found a co2 pellet gun similar to this one at a residence. it was mid-morning when several culpeper students reported that a 15-year-old had showed a gun on a school bus, two morn negligence a row and made specific threats about a school shooting. security video showed the student never entered the campus, and they fanned out to search for him and evidence. once the suspect knew he was being sought he made

arrangements to meet at this corner in the high school. he was taken into custody and the threat over. >> in so many communities across the nation the press conferences have been different. this is to report that we solved something before something bad happened. the students did report this. as the sheriff said it took a little while, but it is very important that if you see something to say something. at some point these students decided that harm could come to their classmates, to their teachers, to their administrators at that school, and they decided to report it. >> reporter: the culpeper county sheriff commended school officials for their response to the incident today, but all new at 6:00, you'll hear from a student about what it was like inside culpeper high school including a moment when some students panicked. back to you now in the studio, wendy. >> thank you, julie. the scare in virginia comes after that deadly school shooting at that community college in oregon last week and we are now learning what happened there from the perspective of the officers who

first responded to that scene. they said two detectives first saw christopher harper mercer, the gunman in the doorway of a building and he fired on them. they say they returned fire and they hit the gunmen in his side. the gunman then went into a classroom and killed himself. after killing nine people during last week's rampage. >> once the suspect engaged the police officers he did not shoot another student. these men saved lives that day. >> those two officers had to dodge gun fire from the gunman without wearing the protection of their bulletproof vests. we're learning about a hit and run that injured a woman and her 2-year-old child. that woman was in a cross walk with a walk signal when she was struck yesterday morning on dale boulevard. police were able to quickly identify the driver of that car and track him down. take a look. a short time after that collision they arrested this

man, 33-year-old patrick lawrence not too far from the crash site. they say lawrence was driving with a suspended license. the woman and her child are expected to be okay. people in arlington have been on edge for months now. we've told you about ten sex assaults all over the county. today, police say they made an arrest for some of those attacks. take a look at the suspect's sketch police handed out and the actual picture there of the man they just arrested for three of those sex assaults. news 4's pat collins is live in arlington with how they tracked this guy down. pat? >> reporter: jim, this is the composite sketch of the sex assault suspect. this is the mug shot of the man they arrested and charged in that sex assault, 19-year-old melvin bonilla. this sketch led to that arrest, but not after some ingenious police work put it all together.

>> 15th and scott streets, july 25th. it's about 1:00 in the morning. a 25-year-old woman is walking down the street. she's attacked from behind by a man. he drags her into some bushes and sexually assaults her and then he runs off, but not before she gets a good look at his face. his eyes, his nose and his hair and that description leads to this sketch. >> september 29th, about 10:30 at night, a 23-year-old woman gets off a bus in the 1200 block of quincy street. a man follows her and forces her into the bushes and tries to sexually assault her and she screams and screams and the guy runs off. that victim remembers that man was on that bus. police start looking at bus pictures and they find one, one

that looks very similar to this sketch. now they really have something to work with. using smart trip car technology, they started tracking his tripos the bus and staking out stops he normally used and this morning, it all paid off. suspect melvin bonilla arrested after he got off a bus and walked through this parking lot. this parking lot right in front of police headquarters. >> the community has been on edge for the last couple of month, but again, we have been working around the clock to solve this case and we can rest easier now knowing that bonilla is behind bars. >> reporter: more details and more cases coming up at 6:00. jim, back to you. >> thank you, pat. a man is in the hospital undergoing a mental evaluation after he allegedly tried to hold up a bank. sheriff's deputies say the man

walked into a bank of america around 11:00 this morning and reportedly said i want $1 million. the teller saw him reach for his waistband and hit the silent alarm. the deputies arrived quickly and arrested the man. investigators say the man's motive is not clear, and again, he is undergoing an evaluation at a hospital. we are learning more about the man who died after he was taken down by security guards. we obtained a police report that said officers used hand controls to control 74-year-old james mcbride. mcbride tried to leave the hospital without signing out last week. the report does not provide more specific details about the type of force used. autopsy results have not been released. >> right now tonight, 12 maryland airmen are in south carolina to help assess the damage there from those historic floods. they arrived late this afternoon in colombia and they'll help

pick up a bicycle bicycle. the vdot plans to add 99 stations over the next three years and double anacostia. it would bring the total number to 301 by 2018. 21 heavily used stations would be completed and they'll 90ers% of jobs and entry point within a quarter-mile walk of a bus station. i'm mark segraves at the live desk. a d.c. employee in the office, the mayor's office of religious affairs has been arrested and charged with distribution of cocaine. 51-year-old lorenzo saunders appeared in d.c. court today. he's charged with possession with intent to distribute of more than 120 grams of cocaine. police also found more than $2,000 in cash in a plastic bag in his home on c street southeast.

five dozen dams all over the state after that historic flooding there. >> late this afternoon authorities recovered the bodies of two people who have been missing. that brings the total number of people killed from these floods to 17. now sheriff's deputies are going door to door in these communities checking on the residents and in some of the worst-hit areas we're seeing signs of recovery as volunteers help their neighbors. you don't have to know people, just know they need help. >> angels. they appeared and i keep saying thank you, and they keep saying we're family. >> residents should expect more road closures in the coming days as floodwaters start to float toward the coast. and now, your storm team 4 forecast. >> it's going to be a long clean up for them. for us, we're looking at pretty nice weather across the region and more sunshine and temperatures well above average.

or average high temperature is 71, 72 degrees and take a look toward the rockville live. as we look toward the temperature right now. 77 degrees and starting to see some color on the trees and over the next couple of weeks we'll be seeing a lot more color right through the halloween area and 75 in leesburg and cooler along the bay and only 68 toward annapol annapolis. storm team 4 radar says it will stay warm through tomorrow and nothing in the region and we have a cold front drifting through the region and that will set the stage for cooler weather tomorrow, but still very, very nice. temperatures only two to three degrees cooler and back to the west. you can start to see it right here and that's the cold front

coming through the dakotas and that will come down and bring in very cool air for them over the next few days and much cooler air for us during the day on saturday. let's take a look and show you what we're seeing and here we are, future weather and just a few clouds and you'll see cloud cover tomorrow and right through 5:00 and no rain associated with this system tomorrow and it's friday, not friday morning and 5:30 in the morning and no problems here and look at the 1:00 hour and we're dry, but we start to see some clouds and we have the rain just coming through the region around 5:00 and that's when we expect to see the showers and the storms developing. we don't think any of the storms will be strong and they'll have the potential for heavier downpour, but they'll move fairly quickly as the front moves down. notice by 8:00 on friday night we're dryer around the d.c. metro area and i do expect the showers to linger. take the aum brela with you friday night.

will start this december. more asian businesses have been targeted in northern virginia. at least four chinese restaurant in stafford county, robbed over the weekend. the glass front door is broken and money taken from the cash registers. the case is similar to a series of robberies at asian businesses last month in loudoun county. stafford county sheriff says they believe these robberies in the two counties are, indeed, related. most of us think of what we flush down the drain and what we flush down the sewers as waste. every time you flush your toilet, folks, you'll claim renewable energy that will save money and make our environment a whole lot cleaner. news 4's mark segraves shows how d.c. water is leading the world in this new technology. >> every day here at blue plains treatment plant in southeast, 300 million gallons of water is running through. >> a lot of that is sewage and poop and it's everything else

that goes down the drain and it's been considered a waste. after that water is cleaned and treated for our drinking water, 1200 tons of the leftover biosolids or sludge are trucked away at a huge expense to d.c. water customers. 60 tanker trucks every single day. >> thanks to science, what was once considered waste can now be converted to power. this is the largest waste conversion plant in the world and the first in the united states. it heats the waste until it can bust, and then they add bugs, tiny, microorganisms that cause a reaction which create methane gas and that is then converted into electricity. and clean energy isn't the only byproduct of this plant. >> by the end of the process, this is what they're left with. it looks like perfectly good soil, but if you add it to this discarded, shredded currency from the bureau of printing and

graving, you end up with perfect soil for growing. >> so we reduce greenhouse gasses and we generate clean energy on both trucking and power and we'll have a clean, nutrient-organic based fertilizer that comes out. it's a wonderful project. >> d.c. water hopes to be selling the fertilizer in the near future. in the meantime, this plant will reduce the pollution by a third. >> at blue plains treatment facility, mark segraves, news 4. >> a sporting goods retailer that has several stores right here in our area has just filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. city sports plans to close at least eight stores and is looking to sell the refrt. there are reports that the locations in silver spring and the new pike and rose development in north bethesda could be on the chopping block. two high school friends started the chain in boston and there are locations up and down the

some new pictures are just coming into the newsroom of the situation in culpeper count they forced three schools to go into lockdown. take a look. this is the pellet gun that the 15-year-old freshman brought on a bus and allegedly used to make threats. you can see how real it looks. that student gave himself up when he heard police were looking for him, but these pictures show that encounter was still pretty intense. officers are trying to determine what charges they're going to file. the lockdowns have all been lifted, but this did impact almost the entire school day. jim? >> metro is making changes to make sure you're safe in the event of an emergency. they come after a man tried to use the emergency call box button at the grovener station earlier this week. no one answered, even after 15 minutes. transportation reporter adam tuss is live now with what metro is doing to ease these concerns tonight. adam? >> that's right, jim. >> we told metro about this today. they tell us they are adding another layer of safety

it was quiet weather is always nice and the rest of this week is not bad either, but this weekend, wow! it will be cool in a hurry. meanwhile, a lot of folks are wondering about this evening if they'll be able to see the rocket launch. here's the story. you will be able to under mostly clear skies just past sunset and it will be launching a rocket from wallop's island flight facility in virginia. liftoff could produce several multi-colored patches in the east and you may be able to see that. clouds of the vapor which is safe and will be interacting from the sounding rocket and you might be able to see that. if you do see something make sure you tweet us at nbc washington and check out both doug and my facebook page. mostly clear skies between 7:00 and 9:00 and right after sunset a bit of a multicolor light glow in the east and not a big deal at all. our temperatures will be in the 70s then and 40s, upper 40s in the north and west.

a truck driver in michigan says he's lucky to be alive. he flipped his truck after a car cut him off. this was on monday, and it was captured on video released by the michigan state police. you can see the car cut in front of the truck and hit it. that sends the truck careening out of control and eventually landing on the freeway median. >> the vehicle smashed me into the wall or smashed me into the steer tire. that was it. it started fish tailing and i

was flopping around -- i thought i was in a transformers movie with the broken glass and the screeching rubber and the burning. i was in shock for probably an hour, but i was coherent. i never closed my eyes because i was just trying to make sure i was going to make it. i just didn't want to die in the truck. i thought the truck was going to catch on fire. thanks to a tip, the driver of that truck who fled from the scene after causing the crash has been located. mother nature helped police catch a kidnapping suspect who was trying to cross the chesapeake bay tunnel. wind restrictions helped prevent the man from getting away. >> this was a bad situation that could have gotten a whole lot worse. >> dozens of cars and trucks come through the chesapeake tunnel. >> we have to be on our a-game, 24/7. >> reporter: sunday it got help from the weather.

the truck from maryland came through. >> there was no indication there was a problem. >> reporter: police made the truck pull to the side because the surf boards in the bed weren't tied down. officers say the man driving was philip timmons. what they didn't know was that timmons was in the car with his ex-girlfriend. maryland deputies tell us he kidnapped her at gunpoint. back at the toll plaza, timmons pulled the truck over and went to check on the surf boards. once he got out of the vehicle that was her opportunity to make a move. >> the victim started driving away and timmons jumped in the truck's bed. it caused plenty of commotion. >> the officer -- someone was standing in the back of a pickup truck and was trying to intervene on what was going on. >> the woman told police she'd been kidnapped. officers searched timmons and found a loaded gun. he was arrested. the victim was unharmed. police say for once, it actually paid off to have high winds at the tunnel. >> at that point unaware of anything that had happened and that vehicle would have just paid its toll and gone across

here. >> that suspect is now in jail in virginia beach? he faces a long list of charges there and in maryland. news 4 at 6:00 begins with breaking news. >> tonight, a worker in the mayor's office of religious affairs has been arrested and accused of selling drugs. >> he appeared in court moments ago, and we just learned his son was also arrested as part of the investigation. tom sherwood outside d.c. superior court now with more on this. john? >> jim, the suspect is 51-year-old lorenzo sanders. he appeared in court late today and he was held on bond. the mayor's office of religious affairs is a tiny office in the city's wilson building headquarters downtown. 51-year-old lorenzo sanders, a clerk in the religious affairs office was arrested yesterday morning by police at this c street southeast home. sanders late today pleaded not guilty to one felony count of possessing cocaine with the
