cocaine and a pistol and the son said all of the drugs were his. i'm at the d.c. superior count, tom sherwood, news 4. new pictures of a dramatic takedown in virginia. a teenager with a gun made threats on a school bus. the scare for students to shelter in place inside classrooms as deputies moved in nearby with their guns drawn. bureau chief julie carey has details of the teenager's arrest just blocks from the school. the alarming scene around culpeper high school like so many others around the country. frightening parents gathering, jamming the school's driveway to try to get to thr kids, only this time the threat was diffused. a teen suspect in custody, the weapon, a pellet gun that others thought was a 22. the sheriff said it was mid-morning when several students came forward to say a 15-year-old schoolmate had shown the guy on a school bus two mornings in a row and made

threats. >> he claimed it to be a firearm and he has made statements about what he would do with a weapon to shoot other people, multiple people and he gave specific, clear details of how or what he would do with that weapon and it's frightening. >> the three schools on the campus were locked down. security video was determined that the suspect never entered the building this morning. multiple police agencies arrived to help with the massive search for the teen and evidence. once the teen learned he was being sought he made a rangements to meet up with law enforcement at this corner near the high school. these photos released by the sheriff's department captured the moment of arrest. investigators found the pellet gun at a residence. the threat is over. >> these press conferences had been different. this is to report that we solved something before something bad happened. >> reporter: inside culpeper high, students say frightening rumors circulated about possible multiple shooters. >> there were these five rumors

going around and there were five people with guns and there was one with shots fired or something like that. >> his father left school frustrated and after waiting 90 minutes in a line of cars to get his son. he said parents needed more information. >> i wasn't afraid because right away they said they caught the guy and found the weapon. just the disorganization of the information was beyond belief, and this down here was even worse than that. >> reporter: there is still no word at this hour on precisely what charges the teenager will face. in culpeper, i'm julie carey, news 4. >> the man who opened fire at an oregon community college was shot by officers before he took his own life. today a prosecutor gave more details about the rampage at umpqua community college last week. two plain-clothes detectives who weren't wearing bulletproof vests exchanged gun fire.

the gunman was hit and he went inside and shot himself. >> once the suspect engaged the police officers he did not shoot another student. these men saved lives that day. >> nine people were killed that day. president obama plans to go to oregon on friday to visit with the am haves families. >> a sketch, a smart trip card and descriptions from two brave sex assault victims. that's how police tracked down a guy wanted for three attacks in arlington. pat collins has more now. the surprising spot where officers made that arrest. pat? >> reporter: jim, one victim that provided the description of the suspect, that led to this sketch. another victim remembered seeing the suspect on a metro bus. that led to a picture which led to an arrest right here in front of police headquarters. >> this is a sketch of a suspect

wanted in connection with three sex assaults in arlington county. the description provided by one of the victims. now this is a mug shot of 19-year-old melvin bonilla charged today in connection with one of those cases, but police say he confessed to multiple sexual assault attempts. since last summer, women have been assaulted at 15th and scott streets in the 1200 block of north quincy street and the 1900 block of north highland street. police believe these cases are all the work of the same man. >> he used the cover of night to where he could conceal himself and ultimately surprise these women by grabbing them from behind, throwing them to the ground to where he would touch them inappropriately. >> after some painstaking police work, investigators managed to compare a sketch of the suspect to a picture of melvin bonilla on a metro bus. they then tracked his travels on

the bus and staked out bus stops that he normally used. then this morning after he got off the bus and walked through this parking lot, they arrested him. they arrested him in this parking lot right across the street from police headquarters. >> the community has been on edge for the last couple of months, but again, we have been working around the clock to solve this case and we can rest easier now knowing that bonilla is behind bars. >> reporter: now there's still about a half-dozen open sexual assault cases in arlington, not linked to this guy. police are trying to close those cases, as well. jim, back to you. >> pat collins. thank you, pat. >> this is the second time in a week that police have used a smart trip card to track down a suspect in sex crimes. we told you late last week about a man charged with exposing himself to an underage girl on a

green line metro train. police used his smart trip card to track him back to the greenbelt station. that's where they made the arrest. >> in south carolina, the governor says hundreds of roads and bridges remain closed tonight as a result of the devastating flooding. it is still a mess in so many parts of that state. the death toll is also climbing. at least 17 people have died, but tonight weir also starting to see some early signs of recovery. nbc's jay gray is in columbia, south carolina, with the latest with all of this. >> that recovery will take a while here and we wanted to give you a firsthand look at the power of the water. look at this huge hole. it used to be a roadway and i'll get out of the way and you can see what the water did to the asphalt here, just tearing it away and there is concern tonight that more water could be on the way. sheriffs deputies are going door to door in dozens of communities

emergency crews decide to how to distribute the resources and n manpower over the scene. the coast guard will suspend its search for the crew of the el faro cargo ship. some family members who are still grieving don't think that's such a great idea. they think some members of the crew might still be waiting to be rescued. 28 americans and five polish citizens were onboard when that ship sank near the bahamas last thursday in the middle of hurricane joaquin. the el faro had what's called a voyage recorder, that's similar to a plane's black box. investigators are hoping to find it before its batteries run out in about three weeks, but the problem is that ship has sunk in about 15,000 feet of water. >> the guy with a suspended license is accused of hitting a mother and her 2-year-old child while they were trying to cross the street. patrick lawrence took off after

past two decade with police in european countries especially countries of the former soviet union claiming that can sell radioactive material where you blow the material up with a high explosive and spread hazardous material around. a big terror concern. the nightmare scenario, in a sense, these pictures were obtained by the a.p. from the mull dove an police who are eager to show their success. in one in february a man claimed that he could sell material like this to isis. he thought he was dealing with a buyer representing isis, but that buyer was actually an undercover operative in a sting operation. there was no actual isis connection, but nonetheless, it's still a subject of great concern and one the u.s. spends a lot of energy on. >> and a lot of money. i am told we spend a couple billion a year and are others participating with us? >> they're trying to get other

countries to be more serious about it. in fact, a number of these smuggling cases peaked in the '90s after the soviet union broke up and they've been declining, but the customers for this have changed over time. we didn't hear about al qaeda and now we do more and shifting to other terror groups and others on the black market and that's the concern. they want to make sure that even though some of these sellers claim to have material that they probably can't get access to and it doesn't get into the wrong hands. >> it raises questions about where these smugglers get their hands on this stuff and do they have access to enough material to be dangerous? >> that is the big question, of course. some of this is material like cesium that's available in hospitals, but there are all those nuclear weapons that were in control of the soviet union that are now in the countries of the former soviet union. that's the concern. could they fall into the wrong hands or could terror groups get their hands on perhaps not as something as radioactive as plutonium and uranium that could

prince george's county. >> the 17-year-old was wounded and managed to flag down the passing school bus driver. she not only stopped, but she took the teenager on to the empty bus and put pressure his wounds and called for emergency medical help and she waited with him until it arrived. she probably saved his life. after st. charles high school let out yesterday afternoon 17-year-old jayvon cole went home and then rode his bmx bike into this waldorf maryland neighborhood to visit a friend. the charles county sheriff says two men robbed him and one pulled a gun and shot jayvon in the leg. he was medevac'd here to prince george's hospital center. >> he has a blood clot that they're trying to treat. the injury is still there. did the doctors tell you how long it will to recover and if it will be a full recovery. >> it will be a full recovery,

jim, back to you. >> indeed it is. thanks, chris. >> tonight, we are beginning to learn more about how how a man died after he was taken down by security guards outside the washington hospital center. a police report says guards used hand controls to restrain 74-year-old james mcbride. his family members say he was a loving father and a devoted husband. he tried to leave the hospital without signing out last week. the washington post reports now that mcbride had a broken vertebrae near his neck, but they did not say how that injury occurred. >> a virginia woman caught on camera practicing yoga on metro tracks is scheduled to appear in fairfax court later this month. metrotransity police say they've arrested this woman for trespassing, a misdemeanor charge. news 4 i-team obtained video of the incident from back in april.

you can see the woman lower herself from the platform in the station and you can see her partner lowering himself, too. he's seen taking picture us of the woman and transit police say deliberately trespassing on the tracks is dangerous especially because of the highly charged third rail. >> metro will add another layer of safety during its mrjemergen intercomes. if nobody picks up the call from emergency intercoms then the calls will be transferred to metro police. a rider tried to use the intercom after the cats game sunday night and he was with his 3-year-old child. he was trying to report that he'd lost his phone. nobody answered, though. his concern quickly grew to one of safety when he couldn't find the transit manager. >> i want to feel safe and know that if there is an emergency i have a safe place to go and know that someone is around.

nobody was around. >> the manager office a bathroom break when the rider was looking for help. the call box in question has been tested and it is now working. motorists continue to push back amid plans to add tolls to part of i-66. the state of virginia has been holding public meetings this week. i-66 inside the beltway would become high-occupancy toll lanes during the morning and afternoon rush. officials say it would help reduce traffic and it would allow for a quicker commute, but most drivers we spoke with are not happy about the price tag. tolls could go as high as $17 a day. there is another meeting on that issue tonight at 7:00. a rocket launch is scheduled at wallops' island and nasa is

u.s. capitol police arrested a guy today who was naked in a fountain outside the library of congress. he might have been bathing there, we are told. it happened in broad daylight during a busy time of day for both tourists and workers. the news 4 i-team broke that story on twitter today. see what you missed if you don't twee the capitol police say the man was fully exposed in the neptune fountain last thursday just after 9:00 in the morning. that fountain include s statues of naked figure, that is. the man is facing charges of indecent exposure. now to a story that's getting a lot of attention. the aclu sent a letter to the smithsonian secretary claiming the institution was violating federal law.

the letter claimed nursing mothers were forced to use restrooms and other rooms that were not private. the smithsonian tells us they will make sure each building has a private space for employees. new mothers may soon have nursing and pumping areas at dulles international airport, too. dulles says it's working on the new dedicated spot after a united airlines employee recently told a mother to pump breast milk in an indoor pet relief area. united says it will apologize to the woman. we checked with the other two airports in our area. reagan national has a nursing lounge in terminal a. they tell us they're working on adding more private spaces and bwi marshall has two designated areas for pumping. they are in the foyer area of the women's restrooms in concourse c and they say they're also working on adding more spaces. olman won gold at the olympics, but her world changed when she got home.

just go and talk. >> i was in the pool last night and i started crying and i said i do need help and that was a turning point. >> allison started seeing a therapist and she realized she had been battling depression and she still didn't feel comfortable being open about it, though, and then there was another dark moment. she learned that her 17-year-old cousin april had taken her own life and that's when allison really understood that mental illness is something people need to talk about. >> it's all right to feel that way, but it's also right to ask for help and not keep it all in and think that you're battling it alone because there are so many people out there that love you. >> today allison says she's dock really well. she's also back on track in her swimming and she has high hopes to make the 2016 olympics in rio. telling allison's story is one way that nbc 4 is joining in the
