the nsa are on reduced operation status today. sick anne arundel county schools in the area are also closed. let's get right to molette green who has more with more on this situation. molette? >> reporter: good morning. take a look at the heavy traffic going into the main gate just behind me. the suspect we can tell you still on the run this morning. this is an active police investigation. we got a chance to see some of the large backups at another gate entrance and the large presence of police activity, cars getting turned away at that particular gate. in a statement this morning ft. meade tells us they're on r operations with only essential workers allowed in. and they want area residents to remain indoors. and as you mentioned, area schools are closed as a precaution. now, anne arundel police told me this morning they could not say if the man they're looking for is armed, just that it appears that he was driving a stolen

megan. >> reporter: that's right. i spoke to a man who lives nearby. he said he actually heard several shots, between five and seven shots here, and police are still looking for the person who fired the deadly shots. if you take a look behind me, you can see the road is still blocked off. they have both sides of the street locked off. we still have investigators here. fewer than were here 45 minutes ago. that e're starting to ramp things down a little bit. it was around 11:45 when investigators arrived on the skrooechblt they found a man suffered gunshot wounds. he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. no word on the description or exactly what led up to the deadly gunshots. all of that. still awaiting word on the name of the person who was killed but

we're told it is an adult, an adult male. i spoke to one man who was here earlier, didn't want to talk on camera, but he said he knows the man who was killed and he believes that he lives in the area, but he's not sure of the circumstances what happened prior to the shooting. all of that still part of the investigation. this is the second murder in alexandria this year. back to you in the studio. >> megan, thank you. a new homicide investigation this morning in capitol heights. prince george's county police say a man died a few hundred feet away from robert gray elementary school. they don't have a motive or suspect right now. someone shot the man several times around 8:00 on elkwood lane. the fbi is stepping in. the stipt's suicide rate is up. they'll specifically target d.c.'s seven-distract.

caused a lockdown. three culpeper counties were locked down yesterday after a 15-year-old freshman flashed a pellet gun. it happened on a school bus yesterday morning. one student told "news4" it created confusion and fear. girls in my class were saying they were scared and afraid and texting each other and texting their parents and talking about were they going to die and stuff like that. it was pretty intense. it was pretty scary. >> the 15-year-old student was taken into custody yet but he has not been identified. there is no word from police whether he will face any charges. >> this morning we're learning about a close call between russian and american warplanes. this comes as tensions continue to rise in the middle east. nbc news learns a russian jet came within a few miles of a russian aircraft. its planes have come close to essentially u.s. predator

looking like it's getting a little bit better there. a man is still on the run this morning. police are on the hunt for him right now. we had a chance to shoot some video when we first got here of all of the police activity at another gate. the backups, the frustrated workers that we ran into who didn't know what was going on and police were turning cars away at that particular gate. ft. meade tells us we're on reduced operation and they want residents to stay indoors. air a area schools closed as well. the suspect crashed near one of the base's gates at 9:00 p.m. that set all of this in motion. the man got out on foot. he could possibly be inside the

"news4's" megan mcgrath is there. megan, what have we learned? >> reporter: you can see behind me belle pre lane is still closed. we have police tape across both ends of this short street here. police have started to pack up some of their equipment. so it looks look it may not be too much longer before they wrap things up at the scene. the investigation ongoing. the search for the person who fired these deadly shots ongoing. it was a little before mind around 11:45 when the report came in. the 911 call, report of a shooting. when officers arrived on the scene, they found a man suffering gunshot wounds. he was taken to an area hospital and later pronounced dead. no word on the identity of the victim here and no lookout as of yet for the suspect. an ongoing active investigation,

carolina right now, you take a look. these are three members of the american civil air patrol. they're in columbia. they're flying over flooded areas. they're showing emergency responders those impacted areas in real time. now, the other group from our area, virginia task force 1 is outside charleston, south carolina. that team says it's working on the water. they rescued a stranded beater and three dogs and they say they also checked out thousands of homes liemg with the national guard. a construction accident blocked traffic inside the third street tunnel for hours. the problem is all cleaned up this morning but last night, take a look. drivers stuck in the tunnel turned off their cars. they trapped drivers while cruise worked to clean up the mess. the tunnel reopened more than two hours later. officials are investigating what caused that cement spill. >> they were trying to clean up

molette green with more on the investigation. molette? >> i just confirmed with anne arundel police, they're searching along with nsa. the suspect bailed from the car late last night after crashing it near a gate. police will not confirm if the gate was unmanned allowing this man to gain entry illegally. now, there's slow moving traffic here at the main gate and elsewhere where there are flashing lights from all of the police opportunistic that we have seen. one gate we know is closed. all the others are open. but these are the residual impact from this activity. the base is under reduced operations. area schools as you mentioned closed as a precaution. now residents are asked to stay indoors. this lockdown came about last night about 9:00 pchl when all of this was set in motion. again, residents are still asked to stay indoors if at all
