. . . . just in, manhunt at ft. meade comes to an end. i'm barbara harrison. we just learned a new development after a man crashed a gate at nsa and took off affecting traffic and school closures at the live desk, i'm open watching the opening moments at a much anticipated trial. a suspected serial killer has his day in court. volkswagen is in the hot seat here in washington over the testing scandal that has it in some serious trouble. >> sunny skies right now. some rain in the forecast before we hit the weekend. i'll have the latest timing coming up in my updated forecast. i'm molette green, live outside the main gate here at ft. meade. just got word the suspect is now in custody. anna rundell county police tweeted that information a short while ago. they found him hiding outside a wooded area close by. we want you to take a look at video we just got in. brand new video showing the damage done to a gate at ft. meade outside the rock in bok interest after the suspected carjacker crashed into it, into the fence there and ran inside the base. all of this touched off a security emergency that reduced ft. meade to limited operations only allowing essential workers inside. >> that was it. they chased him all the way over here for a stolen car. >> they can sniff him out. he is not on the base. they have the dogs out. >> now, anna rundell county police chased the suspect all

the way here to the ft. meade area late last night. still unclear if that gate was actually manned or not. allowing the suspect to gain entry. the base has returned to normal operations and all of the gates have reopened. that is the latest from outside the ft. meade gate. i'm molette green, news 4. >> happening right now, the triple murder trial of charles severance. it is the first day. we are listening to opening statements right now. the prosecution is going first, detailing each murder. they talked about motive and said he lived near the victims when he lost custody of his son developing a hatred toward the courts and, quote, the elite. very quickly, into opening arguments this morning, prosecutors also brought up his writings about murder and weapons. he is charged with killing nancy dunning, the wife of then alexandria sheriff, james

dunning, transportation planner, ron kirby and music teacher, ruth ann lagato. we are live tweeting what is happening in the courtroom. barbara? >> thank you, kristen. >> also in alexandria, police are investigating a second homicide of the year. it happened late last night near bell kre way. she is talking to witnesses about what they saw and heard last night. senate democrats are getting ready to unveil new gun save bills and are about to launch a major effort to ramp up pressure to pass the new laws. today's meeting comes a week after a mass shooting at the oregon college. it will focus on background checks stronger closing loopholes and shutting down the pipelines of illegal guns. republicans controlling congress has shown little interest in

real time. today, the florida postal worker who flew a gyrocop ter through dc's restricted air space should be back in school. he has a status hearing. he rejected a plea deal that would have required him to spend ten months in jail for landing at the u.s. capital early this year. he says the flight was his protest against campaign finance laws. he faces up to 9 1/2 years behind bars. a big step for maryland's governor as he battles an aggressive form of cancer. plus, we are monitoring our big story of the day. mr. is arrested the person who crashed a stolen car into a gate at the nsa headquarters.

a suspended license. investigators say the mother and child had the right-of-way on tuesday on the boulevard. they are apparently doing okay. the fbi is stepping in to help police in d.c. combat a rise in violence. the city's homicide rate is up nearly 50% over last kreer. fbi agents will specifically target dc's police district and areas including anacostia and naylor gardens maryland governor, larry hogan heads back to the hospital for his final round of chemo. it will be his sixth round of treatment. he asks them to pray for other cancer patients who are fitding battles much more difficult than my own. doctors diagnosed him with

breaking news. a manhunt in ft. meade ended less than 30 minutes ago. they caught a man trying to hide in the woots. police say he stole a car in baltimore and they chased him. they are still reduced to essential operations. only six county schools in the area are still closed. meanwhile, alex an drew he andre responsible for whoever is responsible for their second homicide. >> a man was shot and killed.

witnesses report multiple gunshots. megan mcgrath, live in alexandria. you spoke with some of the people that were there. >> we talked to quite a few people. this is now a case of murder. the man who was taken to the hospital early this morning has died. you can see behind me here where one of the bullets ended up just to the right of this entrance to the apartment complex here on bell freeway. we spoke to a number of folks who live in the area. they say a little bit before midnight, they heard a burst of gunfire. >> the cme scene for himself. >> reporter: anthony giuliani say he nearly became a victim too. >> i said, honey, there is gunshots, gunshots. he slowed down. i said, no, we have to go. that's when the car got hit by the bullet. then, we kept going. he sped off at that moment.

>> the gun fire rang out just before midnight on bellcreek way in alexandria. residents say they heard several shots. >> it just went on and on and on. the victim was taken to the hospital where he died. investigators worked through the night collecting evidence. they found a bullet lodged near the entrance of the apartments. police are still looking for the gunman that fired the deadly shots. >> we are expecting to get an update soon from police. they hope to put out more information right around noon including the name of the man that was killed. >> barbara, back to you. >> thank you, megan, another deadly shooting this day. prince george's county police say someone shot a man multiple times on elkwood lane. a few hundred feel away from robert gray element stare school. >> right now, it is anybody's guess who the next leader will be. the president was banned by the

blocks traffic inside the third street tunnel for hours. the problem is all cleaned up now. crews work to clean up the mess. the tunnel reopened two hours later. officials are investigating what caused the cement to spill. >> uber wants you to know that hackers may have access to your account if you use their app. the tool allows you to request immediate car service from your phone. with that convenience comes risks, though. the company says people are getting your user name and password from other apps or other websites and trying them out on the uber app. >> people doing things digitally can be a victim of being hacked. >> people can take advantage of you. >> your best defense is to create different and more difficult user names and passwords for each of your app

breaking news in the search for a carjacking suspect in maryland who crashed into a gate sparking a manhunt. >> he is in police custody.

mo lel gre molette green is live where the man was just caught. they caught him an hour ago. he was trying to hide inside a wooded area close by. we are still at this hour working to find out the suspect's name and his age. and his relationship to an armed carjacking that happened in baltimore city. anything but business as usual inside and around fort me. an all-night search stretch stretched into the morning and reduced the base to limited operation. >> the base has a lot of wood. so he probably is on the base. i doubt it. he had dogs too. my concern is, i can't get to work. i could but there is a lot of traffic. backups for miles after the base closed one gate and police terped cars away while they searched for a man who entered the base after crashing near one

of the gatesment six area schools kept children home and police urged residents in nearby communities to stay indoors. some schoolchildren made it to class as parents walked them to nearby seven oaks elementary. >> even though they locked down only six schools, he could be anywhere. we have to be vingilant, specially with the kids. >> reporter: again, the suspect is in custody. anne arundel county police have him now. still unclear how he was able to get on to base property if that gate, the rockingbach gate was manned after this happened. base operations, back to normal. traffic looking very normal. that is the latest live from outside the ft. meade main gate. i'm molette green.

barbara, back to you. >> this might all look familiar. there was another incident at ft. meade about seven months ago, like this one today, someone tried to drive through the gate in a stolen car. two people were in an suv then, which crashed into an nsa police car back in march. officers shot at them and one of them died. >> breaking news here at the live desk. one of the three americans that stopped a terrorist attack on a train headed to france has been stabbed. the airports confirming to nbc news that airman spencer stone is in stable condition and that he was stabbed in his hometown of sacramento before 1:00 this morning. our sister sayings says there was a fight in the street near several bars and stone was stab multiple times. he and his two friends have been called heroes for tackling a man who opened fire on that train in

an update to a story you first heard about from the news 4 iteam. a virginia woman caught on camera practicing yoga on some metro tracks. they arrested this woman frr trespassing. a misdemeanor charge it is. the news 4 iteam obtained this in april. you can see her lower herself from the platform on the orange line and you can see her partner lower himself too. he is seen taking pictures of the woman. transit police say they were deliberately trespassing on the tracks. that is illegal and dangerous, specially because of the highly charged third rail. this story is getting a lot of reaction online. media mogul rupert murdoch tweeted his support for ben

she wanted everybody to know we are working to know the name of the man who was arrested at ft. meade. he stole a car in baltimore and crashed into a gate at ft. meade and ran on to the grounds there last night. police tweeted that he was caught less than an hour ago trying to hide in the woods. developing now in the carolinas, 14 dams have failed. hundreds of roads are closed and now 17 people confirmed dead from flooding in the state. another two in north carolina have died in the floods. the latest deaths confirmed in south carolina after a truck

drove around a barrier and over an embankment yesterday. nikki haley says more flooding could happen today and tomorrow before it finally ends. >> an el leel team in fairfax county is performing water rescues in south carolina there. the numbers of virginia task force 1 said they arrested a stranded boat ter and three dogs and checked out damage at thousands of homes along with the national guard. breaking news now. senate democrats just unveiled plans for gun control reform. we are hearing from local senators tim kaine and mark warner. they just talked about the need, in their opinions, for reform. listen.

an attempted abduction of a connecticut teen was foiltd. she manages to escape by jumping out of a moving car. it happened monday as the 17-year-old was walking to school. police say the driver of the toyota lured the girl into the car and attacked her once she was inside. again, she was able to jump out of that car. authorities are still looking for the car and a female suspect. >> well, when you think of weddings these days, you may think about going broke. >> you could. there are some couples ties the knot for less than you think. nearly 40% of couples who got married last year, spent $10,000 or lesson their big day. the company wedding report also found the average wedding cost
