this is only the second murder of the year in this area. police didn't have to go far to find a very similar scene. wendy? >> that's right. just 100 yards from the first murder. this community is not used to seeing this kind of violent crime. news 4's pat collins is live in alexandria with the latest on this. pat? >> reporter: wendy, the victim leon williams. a short time ago a friend came to the scene and put down this bouquet of roses. a short time ago his mother came and tried to visit the scene, but she was so overcome with grief her friends led her away. the victim identified as leon dwayne chip williams. he was 37 years old and the father of two little girls. this is a rare sight for the city of alexandria. police working a murder scene, following a trail of blood and

looking for clues and evidence. it happened in the courtyard of the bellpre plaza apartments 11:45 last night, a barrage of bullets. one man's dead. the victim identified as 37-year-old leon williams they say he has family that lives in a nearby neighborhood. in the spray of gun fire there were a number of close calls and look at the bullet hole in this building and look at this car. somebody was in it when it was struck by this bullet. this kind of gun play near these high-dollar homes has people on edge. >> last night we could actually hear the sounds and the gunshot sounds and when you're getting ready to go to sleep that kind of freaks you out. >> i walk out of here every single day after i get off work and it's very cozy. it's kind of shocking more than anything else. >> mayor bill yule promising a full and thorough investigation

with metro facing fare hikes and the loss of ridership, too. >> yeah, jim. this is about as real as it gets with metro leaders, admitting that there is a bigger problem here and a problem that is costing them ridership and a problem that eventually will cost them financially. >> metro admits there is a problem here. >> we're at a low point and i think we're trying to trend in the right direction. >> something that isn't trending in the right direction, metro rail ridership. metro has lost 40,000 trips per day on the system and that means the transit agency is losing millions in revenues each month. >> we've had our troubles in providing reliable service and they know they have to go from point a to point b and they need to be there at a specific time. >> with revenue being drained, there is a very real consideration to fare increases as a way to make up the difference and that's want what elsy gererro wants to hear.

latest polls and even republicans want a change in leadership. >> the washington post is reporting that ryan was the vice presidential candidate in 2012, but he said before he's just not interested in that position. >> thank you, chris. >> big change in the federal prosecutor's office here in d.c. the white house has nominated veteran justice department lawyer channing phillips to be the city's next u.s. attorney. >> news 4's tom sherwood first broke the story this afternoon on twitter. so what is this going to mean for the long, ongoing investigation into former mayor vincent gray. >> wendy, the gray investigation has lasted a long time, more than four years, but that's only part of what this prosecutor does. channing phillips, if approved by congress would take over one of the biggest and most active u.s. attorney offices in america. it handles international and national cases as well as major local prosecutions for the

district. phillips is a native washingtonian, and a justice department official. he has worked for attorneys general eric holder and loretta lynch. phillips and current acting attorney were among top candidates for the d.c. job. cohen announced he will resign october 14th and return to private practice after five years with the federal office. >> phillips would take over the nearly 5-year-old proep of former mayor vincent gray in the $660,000 shadow campaign that helped elect gray mayor in 2010. gray has denied involvement saying last year. >> i maintain these are lies. they're absolute lies. both cohen and ronald maychen have seen the probe with half a dozen guilty pleas. it's an electoral process with integrity and that was violated. as for today, the prosecutor's office said the gray investigation is continuing.

>> one lawyer said phillips will bring fresh eyes to the gray investigation. jim and wendy? >> thank you, tom. charges filed now against the teenager accused of making threats with a gun at a northern virginia school and that student's been held on counts of brandishing a firearm and possessing a weapon on school property. police are not releasing the 15-year-old's name and he's a freshman at culpeper high school. sheriff's deputies said other students saw him with what turned out to be a pellet gun on a school bus yesterday morning. they say he made specific threats to shoot people. three will skoos were locked down while police searched for a student and a gun. >> and the fbi wants you to take a good look at the surveillance pictures. they say that this man held up the wells fargo bank on dale boulevard in woodbring at 9:30 this morning. employees say the man walked into the bank, had a gun and demanded money from the teller and then fled. police used k-9s and a

the killer's gunshots in those cases was asked today if she could identify the man who shot her. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey joins us live with more on that big moment for prosecutors. julie? >> well, it was a caregiver for murder verdict ruthanne lodato's elderly mother, she cried and sobbed at times when she talked about what happened in the lodato home, but she was dry-eyed when prosecutors asked her if she could identify the killer. >> there was a knock on this door, february 6, 2014, and then gunshots. beloved piano teacher ruthanne lodato lay bleeding from bullet wounds. her mother's caregiver described the terror for jurors. she was in the back of the house tending to lodato's mother. i heard boom like this said frank owe, i started screaming very hard. she practically bumped into the killer. that's when i hear boom again and i feel pain right there.

i said who are you? i kept screaming and screaming. franco's description of the man enabled police to create this composite sketch that later led to charles severance's arrest, but unlike the sketch, severance had a long, bushy beard at the time of the crime. defense attorneys have spotlighted that key difference and suggested it was a different man who fired the fatal shots, but for the first time franco was asked to identify severance as the man she saw that day. at the prosecution's request severance turned toward franco. asked prosecutor david lord, have you seen this man before? >> franco, yes. prosecutor, does he look like the man who shot you? franco, yes. >> reporter: we couldn't show you photographs of that moment because even though a still camera is allowed in the courtroom for this trial, certain witnesses like ms. franco cannot be photographed. ahead, all new at 6:00, what happened when defense attorneys

this, saturday future weather shows there could be more rains pushing back toward the coast as a weak weather front sits in that area for isla palms and for charleston and hiltonhead all possible. i doubt they'll see flooding, but the rivers and streams will all rise again and that's on saturday. for our weather around here it's tomorrow that i think we'll see showers and storms could be heavy at times and the impact forecast is moderate because of the weather. some of those gusty storms will be coming through our wear and i'll show you the timing for the moment. for your evening, temperatures dropping to the 70s and the upper 60s by 11:00 p.m. and a dry night for us and even a dry start to the day by morning and friday, we've made it, 54 degrees in some of the cooler locations. so maybe a light jacket by the afternoon and we'll warm very quickly and our highest temperature that we've seen in quite some time. upper 70s and all of the way into the low 80s.

you're watching news 4 at 5:00. now at 5:30, police caught on camera in scenes like the freddie gray arrest. we're seeing how this is impacting the crackdown on crime. on the live desk we're tracking developments involving the future of maryland's head football coach. is he in or out? >> a suspected car thief is now in custody ending an intense man hunt on the grounds of fort meade army base that lasted all night and now we know how that suspect managed to stay hidden for so long this ordeal began last night in arundel mills boulevard when police spotted a car that had been carjacked.

after a brief chase, the driver crashes into a fence in fort meade and bails. meagan fitzgerald is live outside the base with new details. >> reporter: it took 13 hours for several different law enforcement agencies scouring the area at ft. meade looking for the suspect 41-year-old dante small. they ended up finding him in a storm drain right here hundreds of soldiers live. we spoke with a base commander who detailed the moments leading up to when they captured that suspect. those who live on and around fort meade were told wednesday night to stay inside. a suspect who was considered armed and dangerous was on the base and on the run. colonel brian foley is the installation commander at fort meade. it started at 9:00 on wednesday. anne arundel county police chased 41-year-old dante small for five miles before he turned on to the base. >> the subject was traveling in

a stolen vehicle and he traveled at a high rate of speed down rockenbach road and through our rockenbach access control point while in direct pursuit by anne arundel county police. >> reporter: small crash happened the car more than a mile away before taking off on foot. four different law enforcement agencies including fort meade and state police searched for hours while residents were told to stay inside and six area schools were closed. >> he could be anywhere, anywhere, so you know, so we have to be vigilant. >> reporter: but at 10:15, kerny foley said small was spotted by officers in a storm drain near aed withed area. >> when he reappeared out of the storm drain he was immediately apprehended by law enforcement when he reappeared above ground. >> reporter: investigators said they didn't find any weapons and no one was hurt, but the base commander agrees this incident has the potential to be far

development. >> the hospital describes his condition as serious. stone's family appreciates the outpouring of support, but is asking for privacy. >> according to police stone was with a group of friends in sacramento. that's his hometown just before 1:00 a.m. there was a confrontation between his group and another group of people. stone was stabbed several times in the chest. police aren't saying what started the fight, just that it was related to an incident at a nightclub. over the summer you may recall stone and two of his buddies stopped a gunman during a terror attack on a train bound for paris. police in sacramento stressed that last night is in no way related to terrorism. >> he's currently being treated for what appears to be non-life-threatening, but very significant injuries. we haven't had a chance to talk to mr. stone. we don't know if he was drinking or not, we do know that folks in his party were drinking that evening. >> stone is expected to survive his injuries and police say there's no evidence the people responsible for the attack had

medicine in regard to treating measles specifically. >> the young child is fine now and expected to be released from the the hospital as soon as today. health officials in fairfax want to be sure no one else becomes infected. >> the health department has a very robust response to measles cases because of its response. we were planning for this case since last night so we were ready to go this morning. >> reporter: between wednesday, september 30th and last sunday, the child visited four different locations in fairfax county where people may have come in contact. most were doctor's offices where the child was being treated, but one was a child care facility and the other, this costco store. >> measles is one of the most infectious agents that we deal with from a public health perspective and any shared airspace with the measles case, you can be infected from measles. ? symptoms to look out for include fever, coughing and a blotchy rash that may begin on the face. >> now there are no other

time we head into tomorrow arch, we've got this front headed right for us and that's what will bring the rain showers. tomorrow morning as you make your way into work whether you're walking or driving, looking good. tomorrow afternoon we'll need that umbrella because we'll see isolated storms. we'll start it at 9:00 a.m. and here comes the clouds and we're dry still around lunchtime and any time after 3:00, moving from the west to the east and we'll see the showers in here and some embedded thunderstorms and then we head into saturday and we clear right on out and we get some sunshine and those temperatures on saturdays move into the mid to upper 60s and a little bit cool and we'll be watching for high winds and hail not a threat and we also could see some heavy rain within some of these cells and the impact will be a more moderate and isolated thunder and some gusty winds. friday night football might be a little on the damp side. it is going to be warm and those temperatures will drop lingering showers from 8 to 10 and we'll clear out just in time for the
