odds-on favorite hillary clinton can maintain her lead or if bernie sanders or someone else can turn the table. news 4's steve handelsman is in las vegas for the big debate. he joins us now. steve. >> reporter: blue sky, 93 degrees in las vegas. i talked to ordinary folks and a lot of them will tell you they're happy to have the focus now on candidates who are not named donald trump. hillary clinton went to nevada where crews are getting ready for the debate at the wynn hotel that's advertising vegas style. hillary clinton versus bernie sanders and the other three democrats, face-to-face on the same stage for the first time. >> the one that everyone is going to be watching is bernie sanders. >> people will have to contrast my consistency and my willingness to stand up to wall street corporations and big corporations with the secretary. >> sanders leads in iowa and new hampshire, but trails clinton in more diverse states later like nevada. on the vegas strip today people

the vice president is still deciding. live from las vegas, steve handelsman, news 4. >> thank you, steve. a woman thought she was getting into an uber, but instead she got into another car and a man sexually assaulted her. it's a reminder to check that uber ride before you get in. we have some tips on the nbc washington app. the sex assault happened this weekend on mccomb street northwest. darcy spencer has more on what happened. >> reporter: i'm darcy spencer along mccomb street in northwest washington. this is where a young woman was sexually assaulted at knifepoint early saturday morning. from what we've been told by d.c. police, the woman had gotten into a car that she mistook for an uber car and once she got into the four-door silver car, that's when the driver pulled a knife and sexually assaulted her. >> fortunately, she was able to get away from that driver, but

according to this police report, she left behind some items in that car. that includes her driver's license, a debit card, her house key and her smart trip metro card. now d.c. police are saying that they're still investigating this case. no arrest has been made. coming up on news 4 at 5:00, i'll tell you what she did after the attack and how she got help here in this neighborhood. darcy spencer, news 4. right now things are back to normal for passengers taking southwest airlines after technical glitches led to hundreds of delays over the weekend. yesterday's problem impacted the airline's website, the app and phone centers delaying 500 flights at hubs like lax. today they told customers to arrive two hours early just in case. >> the mobile website said that we still have to get a printed pass today and we were able to check in and get our seat

assignments. >> and we just got up earlier and got to the airport and we were to our gate in maybe 20 minutes. >> southwest says it has fixed the application that caused the problems and that there are no indications the airline has been hacked. temps dropped into the 30s for some of us over the weekend and we can see that across the region over the next couple of days and let's get the latest from our chief meteorologist doug kammerer. >> a really chilly weekend out there and a chilly start to the weekend. as a matter of fact, some areas saturday night into sunday morning and into the 30s for the first time and there are more of those to go and even on the cold side and dulles coming in at 39 this morning and 39 manassas and 39 in culpeper and 50 toward annapolis. look at fort meade coming in at 37 degrees. so a very cold start to the week, and i think it gets a lot colder next week. nice weather is here for today and maybe for tomorrow, but then very dhchilly comes in and almo

and was 80 years old. the family has a lot of questions. coming up on news 4 at 5:00, why they are calling his death a homicide. in buoy, i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. columbus day means a welcome three-day weekend in the washington area. hundreds marked the day by taking part in a colorful annual ceremony that also had its share of critics. news 4's tom sherwood takes us there. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: the united states marine corps band helping to kick off the annual columbus day ceremony held each year at the 1912 columbus statue that stands just outside of union station. today's, venevents included the pomp and ceremony by the knights of columbus, a catholic social group that has supported recognition of columbus. the italian embassy honored the

i'm jackie bensen in northwest washington. a disturbing scene behind me. a d.c. police car was involved in what we are told is a

collision with a bicyclist on connecticut avenue and l street in northwest washington, and you can see d.c. police are on the scene here investigating and trying to figure out exactly what happened. l street does have a bike lane, but right now we have absolutely no information about the cause of this collision. we don't know what led to it, but you can tell from looking at the police vehicle that obviously there was a lot of force involved in the vehicle's collision when it finally hit the median there. we are told that the cyclist, we do not know if it is a man or woman, is in critical condition in a local hospital and we are also told the police officer who was driving that vehicle was also transported to the hospital and his injuries are described as nonlife threatening and investigators are here on the scene trying to figure out exactly what happened when a d.c. police vehicle, an suv and

a bicyclist collided at 20th and l street a short time ago. back to you. >> thank you, jackie. an alaska airlines flight had to make an emergency landing in buffalo. the reason is a bit odd. the plane was heading from new jersey to seattle with 180 people onboard. it seemed someone put a credit card reader in a trash can in the plane's rear galley. it started to smoke, possibly from melting battery. the crew had a fire extinguisher and people are trying to determine who put it there. >> it may feel early, but doctors say they're already treating people for the flu and the cdc says now is typically when the virus starts to spread. according to the centers with disease control, last year's vaccine was only 20% effective with the virus that made people so sick. this year there's a quad vaccine that can protect against four different strains. >> the vaccine is formulated new at the end of every flu season

right now a cyclist is in critical condition after being hit by a d.c. police suv. it happened just before 2:00 on connecticut avenue on l street. connecticut is shut down right now between l and m and the officer was also taken to the hospital, but he will be okay. first at 4:00, actor randy quaid and his wife are in custody on half a million dollars bail in vermont after they escaped to canada to avoid felony vandalism charges. police arrested the pair at the canadian border after they tried to re-enter the states. the cup hell been deported and they'd been fugitives since 2010 for allegedly squatting in a california home. >> rain-swollen rivers in eastern south carolina are

starting to recede, but there's still major flooding to deal with. a stretch of i-95 reopened today and it was shut down for more than a week because of the flooding. the governor announced that the state is shifting from emergency mode to recovery mode. >> local members of the civil air patrol are back home this afternoon after helping track south carolina's floodwaters from the sky. >> northern virginia bureau reporter caught up with the group from the civil air patrol in leesburg. >> over the past several days we've shown you some of the incredible images out of south carolina. the storm systems that rolled through bringing a lot of damage. water's rising quickly. this group right here members of the civil air patrol, some of them just back from south carolina. they flew ten missions over the course of four days and 18 hours in the air, but it wasn't all about capturing the devastation left behind. >> for an actual predictor of what will happen next is the levels that will go up and down that give the officials enough

still on the warm side? >> still on the mild side and some folks are taking advantage of today's weather especially if they're running in the marine corps marathon. it doesn't get much better than this. lots of sunshine across the area and as you mentioned, pretty mild and your runner's impact forecast, 6:00, 7:00 and temperatures mid to upper 60s. just perfect and you want to get into the feel of cool weather that we'll be having in another two weeks. by early tomorrow morning, a few showers and you might want to grab the umbrella and light showers will be scattered and our temps in the 50s to the mid-70s and it will be another mild one tomorrow and rain intensity again, just a few showers expected very, very light and we're not expecting anything heavy or moderate for the morning and for tomorrow afternoon. big story in our forecast is just how much the temperatures are going to take a plunge from a couple of chilly overnights and starts to our day to

downright cold by the weekend. the angelo is 52 degrees. so we're close to that this week and each day starting out, but look at saturday, sunday, look at the start to next week. and just a couple of minutes to the seven-day forecast. >> thanks, veronica. passengers on southwest airlines can rest easier this afternoon and flights are back to normal after a weekend computer glitch caused a nationwide problem. tom costello has the latest from reagan national. a good day from reagan national airport in washington. southwest airlines says its computers appear to be back up and operating normally today and all systems appear to be operating normally today after a very difficult day yesterday. we had significant delays at major airports across the country. at las vegas, at phoenix and los angeles, for example, because our computer systems went down at southwest airlines. it affected their mobile apps and it affected their computer check availability.

their lines in some cases lasted and stretched for several hours. in total, 500 flights delayed yesterday. that means you had several thousand people affected and today they're playing catch-up. they say that all systems are operating normally today and the delays from this morning appear to be minimal and appear to have dissipat dissipated. they have the computer systems up and operating normally, but it could be a full day of catching up and making sure that bags that might have gotten lost get to their rightful owners and those people who maybe missed a flight yesterday are rebooked today. i'm tom costello at reagan national airport in washington for nbc news. i'm mark segraves in bethesda. 52-year-old gary seward loved hads family and he loved his motorcycle. sunday afternoon he was coming home from a ride that tragically ended here along old georgetown road. montgomery county police are still investigating.

they questioned the driver of the car that was involved in an accident and no one yet has been charged. coming up at 5:00, you'll hear from his family as they tell you why they and our community have lost a hero. a lawmaker in the houston area says he's still trying to figure out why a police officer used a stun gun on him. police body cams and a cell phone captured the moment when police approached a group of people outside jn than mionathas home in prairie view, texas. one of the officers told him to step back and told him he was interfering. miller told him he lived in the home and had done nothing wrong. >> i didn't fight him, and i asked him to keep his hands off me, please, and i stepped back. i got out of the way. i wasn't talking to them anymore, and i left it alone and i felt like i was out of the way and i wasn't interfering. miller is charged with interfering and resisting

arrest. the officers are still on duty and the police chief says the case is under review. right now protesters are getting ready to fight a war for montgomery county police chief for an award comes major will beat a peacemaker of the year award. an online petition for chip has more than 200,000 signatures. officer gil wanted to keep the dog, but the department won't tell him where the dog is. they told news 4, chip is with a k-9 rescue group, but won't name that group. >> a local boy scout has done something only a handful of kids around the world has done, nathaniel cummings of troupe 663 earned all 141 merit badges during his time in scouting. scouts must turn 21 rankings, but the loudoun county high

search for your friends and maybe buy a new toast or facebook. in the weeks to come the social network will start testing a new shopping section. according to a company blog posted today, the mobile app will make it easier for you to browse and buy products while on facebook. it's the company's next big step into the e-commerce business. >> farmers say heavy rainfall this fall is causing a shortage of a holiday staple. now it won't be hard to find pumpkin for halloween, but come next month you can have trouble finding canned pumpkin that you can use for thanksgiving. the shortage can continue deep into the holiday season. >> pumpkinwise, it's a lot harder for the fungus. we had to spray them more than wield have, but the weather is hard on everything for agriculture and it puts us behind on bailing hay and you can't get it out of the fields. >> the overall pumpkin harvest is down by a third this year.

drivers are not using them. chris clackum reports on a new federal program to change that. >> this right here is like having a second set of eyes. >> reporter: chevy salesman logan burress takes me on a tour of the latest, greatest auto safety features now being offered like blind spot monitoring that sets off a blinking light in your rear-view mirror when lane change isn't safe, letting you know if there is a car right here or in some cases about to be right here. >> reporter: or adaptive cruise control. >> adaptive cruise control is right in here and it uses sonar to detect the vehicle that's in front of you. >> reporter: automatically applying the brakes if you get too close. all part of the growing list of safety features on cars and trucks these days. >> which is great when we think about how to survive crashes, but we're getting to the point where the technology is very mature and it can actually prevent crashes. >> there is a problem with many

well, one white bengal tiger in a litter is know usual enough. three are extremely rare. these guys were born in a zoo in crimea. two have grayish stripes while the third is virtually all white. unfortunately, their mother rejected all of them so the zoo staff is bottle feeding the cubs and on saturday they put the cubs in a nursery with lion cubs also born recently. they crawled all over the cot and each other, too.

an oregon community gathered to welcome students back to umpqua community college and it's their first day back in class after a gunman shot and killed nine people on the school's campus. nbc's jay gray has a look at the return in roseburg, oregon. >> carrying the message, hundreds lined the road back to umpqua community college this morning. >> this is our community, and it doesn't happen here. it's not supposeded to. 11 days ago it did happen here. >> when a former student burst into a classroom and opened fire. nine people were killed and nine more injured as police moved in. he turned the gun on himself. >> it was a very sad event and we need to move on now. >> for students, moving on means coming back. as the campus opened for the first time since the massacre, was there a stepped-up police presence along with counselors and volunteers. >> there's still a lot of

back to you in the studio. >> a police officer and pedestrian are in the hospital after an accident on connecticut avenue northwest near l street. it's a busy intersection and news 4's jackie bensen is there live. jackie? >> jim, was there a lot of confusion about this because one of the first responding officers was on his bicycle down there as well as a passerby lay their bicycle down to try to help and there was some initial misinformation that this was a bicyclist who was struck. we are now told by police that it was a pedestrian. a man walking across the street carrying a briefcase. he was in the crosswalk. we do not know at this time whether or not he was crossing with the light. that man was struck by the window, apparently, of the police cruiser by one of the side view windows. a short time ago we talked to lieutenant ronald wilkins
