4:00 pm
>> news 4's chris gordon is there now. chris, this is going to affect so many people. i mean, the question everybody's got to be asking, has the water at least stopped flowing? >> reporter: no, in fact, the water is flowing even more. take a look at this hydrant which wssc opened just a short time ago to try to relieve the pressure in the water main. the water line that broke behind me, you see, northbound traffic, one lane of northbound traffic on rockville pike passing but no traffic is on the southbound lane of rockville pike. there is also traffic on cedar lane, but you are only getting by in a single lane on rockville pike heading north, so it is a slow rush hour out of the district into bethesda and beyond here along rockville pike. let's go up to chopper 4. i saw him circling just over head so you'll have an idea, there has been a lot of construction in this area of
4:01 pm
walter reed and beth swesda andh in the intersection. there was no construction today so it opportunity appear to be a construction-caused accident. instead, it appears to be a wssc, washington suburban sanitasa sanitation commission line. crews have been looking for the source of the break. i talked to a crew member a few minutes ago. here's what he had to say. how long will this take to fix? >> probably all night until in the morning rush hour. >> reporter: >> shutdown rockville pike the whole time? >> we'll have a couple lanes open after we get it under control. >> reporter: now, we are back live and you're looking at the reason why the southbound lane is shut. that is the wssc, washington suburban sanitary commission crew, working on what they think is the source of the leak. you see the water cascading down
4:02 pm
behind the side of rockville pike here and as i already told you, they opened this fire hydrant trying to, it's a 16-inch pipe. now, that's not the biggest we've ever had if you river on remember road, we had the water rescues. it was a 6 0-inch pipe. this is a 16-inch pipe. happened about 1:30. they have not yet discovered the exact location. they have to then dig down through concrete, they have to turn off the water, they have to replace the section of pipe, they have to then either cement over it or put a plate, a metal plate. so this situation is going to continue a few hours. we will continue to monitor it for you during this evening's rush showehour. that's the latest live in bethesda. back to you. i'm wendy rieger at the live desk. the young couple rescued from the burning townhome this morning in reston may survive. the man and woman both in their 20s were pulled from the second story of this burning home on
4:03 pm
purple sage court. both then went into cardiac arrest as they were taken to the hospital. and they were revived. now we've learned that the woman is awake. she's talking to investigators, and the man is in stable but guarded condition. fairfax firefighters are planning to hold a news conference at 6:00 to update us on the cause and the condition of -- cause of the fire and the condition of the couple. and shamari stone will be there and we'll bring you a live report. now also today, let's go to pat collins who is looking into a deadly hit-and-run. pat? >> reporter: wendy, the victim walked with a cane. he had croc shoes on his feet and he was carrying a bag. he tried to cross sargant road here when he was struck by a pickup truck going this way that threw him into the path of a car going that way. now, that car stayed on the scene. the pickup truck, long gone. this is a fatal hit-and-run. and police say they have some
4:04 pm
possible leads in the case. on a northwest street this afternoon, police towed away a black pickup truck. it had a broken headlight. the truck described as a possible lead in this fatal hit-and-run investigation. police say around 6:30 this morning, a man was struck as he was crossing sargant road. they say the man was first hit by a black pickup truck which then threw him in the path of a gray car headed in the other direction. >> the second vehicle who was coming the southbound direction actually hit the pedestrian a second time once he was on the ground. the second driver remained on the scene, obviously. no criminal charges being sought against him. >> reporter: now police spent hours investigating what happened here. look at the number of evidence markers. i counted at least 28.
4:05 pm
now, i don't know who the victim is, but i know where he was about 20 minutes before he was killed on that street. more on that coming up at 5:00. in northeast, pat collins, news 4. >> all right, thanks a lot, pat. forced to go from what had been their home to a hotel. about a dozen families have had their lives turned upsidedown because their building isn't safe enough to live in. >> news 4's mark segraves was there as city officials moved them out today and he has more now on what's going to happen to them next. >> reporter: 12 families, many of whom have been paying rent in this apartment building for years, are today finding themselves being forced out. and that's because the district government has determined that the building they've been living in is no longer safe. according to district officials, they gave the owner of the building months and months of advanced notice and fines telling him that he needed to make these repairs.
4:06 pm
again, according to district officials, the owner refused. today was the deadline and now the district government is here moving these families out. they will all be taken to a local hotel where the district will pay for them to live for two weeks. but after that, many of them will be on their own. coming up at 5:00, you'll see what happens when we confront the owner of this building and what he had to say about the situation. in southeast, i'm mark segraves, news 4. i'm julie carey at the fairfax county courthouse where a key witness is testifying today in the charles severance triple murder trial. his ex-girlfriend with whom he was living when two of the victims were killed said it was severance who urged her to buy two small handguns. severance is charged in the shooting death of three well-known alexandria residents over a ten-year period. linda robra already had two .38
4:07 pm
revolvers when severance moved in with her in 2011. because he had a felony conviction, he was barred from buying guns but she said in 2012 severance showed her a photo of a small .22 caliber five-shot revolver and urged her to get two. along with a specific type of ammunition. she says she did and testified severance showed her how to use them. when he moved out of her ashburn townhouse days after police started looking for him, the guns were gone. ahead at 5:00, she talks about the chilling statement severance made to her about police and the courts. in fairfax county, julie carey, news 4. boy, i'm just thinking back to that scene we saw in rockville pike. who would have thought chris gordon would have needed his waders on a bright sunny day like this? but, doug, i guess we should all keep at least an umbrella handy for later in the week, huh? >> i think that's the thing. really it's later today, we're going to see a chance of shower activity. then it's the jackets then maybe even the coats as we move on through the next couple days.
4:08 pm
today, though, no coats needed at all. we just saw a few showers out there before 10:00, 11:00 this morning. that was about it. high temperature the today near 80. lee burg, warrenton. 77 in d.c. nice sunshine a little bit earlier. we're watching a frontal boundary making its way our way. it will continue to bring in much cooler weather. so the nice, mild temperatures are here. here comes the chilly air and we are talking very chilly air coming up this weekend. turning rather cool the next couple of days. still not too bad. chilly air coming in friday, saturday, and sunday. we'll talk much more about that. veronica has a better chance at the look of showers this evening coming up in the next five minutes. >> thanks, doug. well, you've no doubt gotten used to the spectacle. will tonight's democratic debate in las vegas live up to the last gop debate? we're just a couple hours away. and researchers may have finally found the source of a listeria outbreak that was traced to one of fall's favorite traditions.

whatever you're doing right now, you've got to stop and take a look at this. a drone captured a spectacular view of fall colors in northeast vermont. the trees in our area are just starting to change. >> yeah, but the leaves are hitting their peak already in vermont right now. the photos reveal an amazing array of golds, reds, yellows, as far as the eye can see. i mean, this is breathtaking stuff. v.j., i grew up in michigan so we grew up tracking that fall color, going out, checking out some of the leaves changing. i know you're a huge fan of that, too. >> i am a huge fan of fall color. went to school in asheville, north carolina, and there you get some of the prettiest color around, but you're absolutely right, we've got a map, too, that storm team 4 put together for you showing you where we are already seeing some of that peak
4:12 pm
color. as we mentioned, upstate vermont, areas of new hampshire, upstate new york, even down through areas of northwestern or northeastern pennsylvania. and right here in some of the high elevations of west virginia. also seeing some peak color there. most of our area getting some low color to moderate color up around areas of western maryland. now, part of the reason that i think we're going to have some great color around here is because we've had showers, we've had very low temperatures at times. then we get those warm days like today. some spots in the swrupper 70s across the area. as far as the showers we're going to see this evening, the showers will be wrapping up around 8:00. just a few spotty showers is all we'll see here this evening. another chance before the week is out. doug has your four-day fwrast co forecast coming up. shocking news at 4:00, a former college football star arrested for murder and what he

now at 4:15, we're staying on top of breaking news out at bethesda. drivers are trying to find their way around a massive water main break. rockville pike is open to only one lane near the national institutes of health, as water continues to spew out of that 16-inch main. there's no direct damage right now to businesses or to homes. a russian-made warhead soared 33,000 feet before exploding less than a yard from

malaysia airlines flight 17. that's the findings from dutch safety board, which says shrapnel instantly killed the pilots and allowed them no time to maneuver or even call for help. now, they are still looking into who fired that rocket and from where, so the report did not assign blame for that attack in eastern ukraine. right now, a lot of eyes are out in vegas as we count down to the firsts democratic presidential debate. >> the headliners in tonight's matchup are hillary clinton and bernie sanders, of course. maryland and virginia both have former leaders on stage. looking for a breakout tonight. we turn to news 4 steve handelsman who's live now in vegas. what kind of a night do you see this turning out to be, steve? >> reporter: well, you know, here in the spin room and tv live area at the debate site, wynn hotel right on the vegas strip, the conventional wisdom is this is shaping up as much more of a conventional presidential debate. the first one for the democrats because it's not a republican
4:17 pm
debate and it can't be dominated by donald trump who incidentally, no surprise, trump always figures out a way to get involved, announced today he's going to be on "snl" next weekend and said he's going to be live tweeting tonight. cannot stand on the sidelines. has to try to be involved. he won't be in the debate. the people who will be have got a huge opportunity. i mean, let's face it. any debate, any year, any party, whether you have 16 or whether you have three, is big because there's a potential to gain and there's, some say, a bigger potential to lose. let's tick off some candidates. bernie sanders obviously on a roll especially in the early primary states surprising everybody in the democratic party, surprising everybody back home in vermont who loves and adores bernie sanders but never thought he would play outside as a democrat. he's a socialist. he's had huge rallies. i spoke to a reporter from los angeles who was in a venue where he said sanders had 27,000 people. 27,000. that's way more than hillary
4:18 pm
clinton. so, he's well known now, and he's certainly, people know about the fact he's appealing to so many democrats by surprise, surprising many people, but have they heard from bernie sanders? the answer is no. hillary clinton, the on. she went to reboot after the trouble she's had with her e-mails and being pursued by sanders. quickly, martin o'malley. of the three candidates including former senator jim webb, the former maryland governor is thought here to have the skills to maybe stand out, break out. what that would mean to his candidacy, big question mark. i'm steve handelsman, news 4 live from las vegas. and taking a look across our area right now, a nice afternoon for the most part. we have a couple showers, though, that have developed as we've been talking about the last couple days. take a look outside right now. see what i'm talking about right here. there are some showers right downtown. see in the dark clouds. also the sun off in the distance. this is exactly what we'll
4:19 pm
continue to see. right now, 77 degrees. winds out of the southwest at 9 miles per hour. so we're on the mild side. 80 degrees in huntingtown, on the warm side for su. 77 leesburg. temperatures today 5 to 10 degrees above average. the temperatures will be comi down in thefecti next few days. the allergies on the w side for the of peoe have been suffering lately. mold is on the high side. a quite of people are suffering that i've talked to, too. see a few showers. look what'sng rappenight over downtown right now. i just sho you that right ere, if we can -- i thought zg rk m an zoomin and show you how this is happening. once again, we're seeing showers develop right inside the beltway. and right downtown. notice not a lot, not heavy rain, but right over the 395. just showed you that shot a second ago. right on through the center portions of the downtown region. right over the capitol, along the mall, too.
4:20 pm
we'll continue to see a few showers throughout the evening but not expecting a lot. it's all a result of a cold front as it's moving our way. that cold front will drop in some cooler numbers from the north. look at our air starting to move fr in from canada. we're going to be a little on the cooler side. high temperatures tomorrow only going to be in the 60s. that's the case the next few days. 68 tomorrow. 67 thursday. 67 friday. highs saturday, mid 50s, most of you. 60 in the city. wait until you see how cold the rest of the weekend is. we're using the word cold, guys. >> ouch, thanks, doug. a young man is sitting in jail charge with a murder that makes no sense. three years ago he was one of the brightest young stars in college football. thomas johnson told dallas police yesterday he picked a jogger at random and attacked him with a machete. >> reporter: in his mugshot, thomas johnson shows little expression. his circumstances monday, much different from when he took this photo as one of the nation's top
4:21 pm
college football recruits just three years ago. >> as you get closer and closer you can tell it's a machete and there are repeated blows. >> reporter: this witness told nbc 5 he saw johnson use a machete to kill the unidentified jogger. police say johnson then called 911 on himself, confessed to the crime and told them he did it because he's angry at his living situation. >> it appears that mr. johnson picked this victim at random. it's absolutely random. >> he just attacked? >> he just attacked him. >> reporter: wetopped by the home of johnson's aunt who court documents show has called police on johnson before. she did not talk on camera but told us through tears in her eyes she hadn't heard from him in quite some time and wasn't sure where he had gone. >> so obviously still a lot, a lot of questions out there that haven't been answered. thomas johnson played at texas a&m with johnny manziel, helped
