he broke three bones in her face. three bones in her face. she was in the hospital. yeah, the neighbors want to know, who is this guy? >> we asked d.c. police about that. they told us it is not their policy to give out a suspect's information until a person is formally charged. the man isn't in a d.c. jail. officials with an outside jurisdiction are holding him as a fugitive. just in now, we are finding out that syrian president bashar assad has made a surprise visit to moscow to meet with prussian president vladimir putin. it is assad's first known trip abroad since war broke out in syria in 2011. these are pictures from yesterday's surprise meeting. assad reportedly thanked russia for launching those airstrikes in syria last month and the two allies reportedly talked about the continuation of military

operations. the u.s., as you may know, is against the airstrikes and believes russia is actually helping the assad regime by targeting anti-assad fighters and not isis. major developments in the search for the next speaker of the house. wisconsin representative paul ryan said he is ready to do that job but he had some demands and he listed them. >> if you can agree to these requests and if i can treelly being a unifyi -- truly be a unifying figure then i will serve. >> nbc's tracie potts will join us in a little bit with how likely it is that the most conservative republicans will agree to his demands. we'll look at what exactly the demands are. that's ahead at 5:30. today the man who led an international drug trafficking and money laundering ring for nearly 50 years will learn his sentence. dc judge convicted gregory

kissman in 2012. homeland security officials say that kissman faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years or a maximum of life in prison. blood hounds will join in the search today for missing teenager from maryland. steven coltman's family posted this sign on their front door in charles county urging him to come home or at least call. police arrested coltman last week after an attempted home invasion. no one has seen him since then and his family is worried he has a gun with him. a new candidate expected to run for mayor of baltimore, nick moss by, said he's making a desuggestion about the future of baltimore. he is maryland mossby's husband. the six officers facing charges in that case and one of those officers now wants his jury is he questered. william porter is facing manslaughter charges. his lawyer's request would mean the jury couldn't use their phones during the trial.

they would have calls visited and monitored. the trial begins next month. today the school board in prince william county will review the design for a new high school. the board was supposed to make a final vote on that design tonight but instead it will meet to review it one last time. the final vote has been pushed back to november 4th. some montgomery county parents are not happy about a new redistricting plan. the parents of rachel carson elementary students met last night. if this redistricting plan is moved some students could be shifted to doesy elementary. some high school students could be shifted to new schools as early as 2017. right now we are getting in more information about a man arrested accused of hacking u.s. officials and giving the information to isis. this man was caught in malaysia.

breaking news out of new york city. just hours ago an nypd officer died after being shot in the head. officer randolph holder was 33 years old and spent five years with the police department. he was responding to a call for gunfire when an officer and suspect were shooting at each other. holder was hit in the head. a man was arrested. a man in fairfax county threatened another driver with a hatchett over a parking space. this happened be in an nondale at a shopping center. the 20-year-old komadi komadin ahadabahi was fighting over the shot with another driver when he pulled out the hatchett and threatened to use it. he is charged with attempted malicious wounding and the other driver is not hurt. today's weather

following a developing story outside of silver spring. a person has died after crashing into a tree. news 4's molette green is there with more on the investigation and what caused the crash. molette? >> reporter: aaron, we're much closer to the actual accident scene. take a look behind me at the damaged tree where the car crashed into it. we are in a residential neighborhood. police fire trucks, they left about 30 minutes ago and they towed the car away here. it gave us a really good look at the extent of damage that car caught fire after it crashed and it trapped the driver inside. the driver was pronounced dead here at the scene. all is clear here now at ray drive and gift avenue.

not too far from philadelphia avenue which is the main street here in silver spring close by. still working to find out what caused this horrific crash and the name of the driver who lost his or her life after this crash happened just after midnight. that is the latest live from silver spring, i'm molette green, news 4. right now prince george's county police trying to figure out who would kill a woman inside her home. a relative found 56-year-old amanda jones dead in the perfery perrywood neighborhood. she died of blunt force trauma. back in 2011 police were called to that very same home after jones's son, who had bipolar disorder, fired shots into the house. police eventually shot and killed the man after he reached for an officer's gun. prosecutors in the trial of accused killer charles severance say his motive was clear in at least one of the killings. severance had a protective order against him signed by the first

victim's husband. that order was to keep severance away from his son's mother. prosecutors also presented the jury with severances own writings. they argued those writings described the killings. the defense could start presenting its evidence today. severance is accused of killing three people. the biggest threat to the u.s. right now, take a live look at capitol hill this morning. that is where the house homeland security committee will hear from top intelligence leaders. jay johnson as well as the head of the fbi will testify at that hearing. you may want to watch out for school buses when you head out this morning. montgomery county police are targeting drivers that don't stop when those stop signs are out. the news 4 iteam told you about concerns on stops on busy roads back in may. they have to stop on a wide road

martin johnson filed a $3 million lawsuit alleging excessive force by four agents. cell phone video and images from his arrest in charlottesville went viral back in march. charges against johnson were dropped. protecting our nation's airports is a full-time job and right now some of the best weapons against serious threats are man's best friend. for the first time ever the tsa let our news crew helped train the team of explosive sniffing dogs. handlers say they train the dogs to associate certain smells so the dog thinks it looks for a toy but it's really looking for a bomb. >> this really is a 24-hour-a-dayon. we take the dogs home. they're part of our family. >> some of the dogs are actually named after 9/11 victims.
