at a crash. tow truck arriving on the scene to remove the car. at this point we know a woman was hit by a car at wiehle avenue and chestnut grove square. an ambulance rushed her to the hospital where we're told she died. the driver did stay on the scene. reconstruction team from the police department still working on this issue. that road is back open and we don't know if any charges are on the horizon. the man accused of shooting an officer is expected out of the hospital. that suspect along with three others were taken into police custody after the shooting last night. holder and several other officers responded to a report of gunfire in queens. when they arrived officers and a man suspected of stealing a bike started shooting at each other. holder was shot in the head. he died. he was 33 years old.

happening today, a murder suspect will appear before a judge from jail. prince george's police say sean crawford stabbed his girlfriend's two sons. this happened on monday in objection in holiday. kesean mason died. his brother survived. they tried to protect their mother from her boyfriend. crawford will make his appearance from the jail. well it is just another beautiful day out there in the d.c. area. my goodness, look at reston's live camera. not a cloud in the sky all across our area. thanks to high pressure. i'm not even sure if it's reston since it's back to future day. i think they are calling it hill valley. lucky us all around the d.c. area, current temperatures right now are moving in on that 60 degree mark pretty fast. some areas in the shenandoah

the nbc washington app. developments in the last hour in the effort to name a new speaker of the house. the house republican leadership wrapped up a news conference. john boehner said he scheduled two votes now for a new speaker. he says republicans will vote on their nominee in conference one week from today. the "full house" will vote for the new speaker next thursday. these developments come to heels of wisconsin congressman paul ryan announcing late last night that after some prodding he would consider running for that job. here's what boehner had to say about that just a minute ago. >> we all know paul ryan. he's a very good member. he works hard. he's very bright. and he has a good relationship, i think, with all the wings of the party. that's why i think he'll be doing fine. >> that's a key point, the speaker alluded to. representative ryan said he would only consider the job if it would serve to unif i the republican party and help push the party to come up with viable proposals instead of his words

aaron gilchrist at the live desk. we're on the verge what cube pivotal moment in the charles severance murder trial. the defense asked the judge to throw out all of the charges against charles severance. the jury is out of room at this point. the defense says there's no concrete evidence that the evidence presented to this point is extremely thin and strained. a direct quote from charles severance defense team. the judge asking some questions, talking about witnesses who have been presented by the prosecution before the jury here going through their testimony with the defense as he's making his decision about whether to strike the charges in this case. course, charles severance charged with three murders in alexandria. this trial has been going on more for than a week.

month. he lives in that apartment building. he turned himself in yesterday. we're still working to find out what the motive was for the shooting. a desperate search developing right now. the police chief says he's begging for answers after an incident of road rage killed a 4-year-old girl. >> reporter: a search for suspects is under way this morning after police found this red truck pulled over on the highway. three people inside including a 4-year-old girl who was shot in the head. >> the 4-year-old child has p s passed away. >> reporter: it's blamed on road rage. >> the truck was literally going across several lanes and just to avoid this vehicle to pass. >> from what we understand the cars were both moving, one car pulled up against other car and fired rounds into that vehicle. >> reporter: according to the ntsb over a seven year period road rage led to 218 murders and

yesterday. johnson wants $3 million in damages for what he calls excessive force and training failures. >> in baltimore the police officers charged with freddie gray's death go on trial next month. one officer wants his jury sequestered. william porter's lawyers filed a motion yesterday. that means jurors couldn't freely watch tv or use their cell phones. porter's lawyers say they don't want intense media coverage to interfere with their case. the choice is now in school leaders hands at the university of mississippi. students at ole miss voted to remove the mississippi state flag from the campus because it shows a symbol of the confederacy. some administrators denounced the flag. the school spokesman said their next step is to talk to other universities. a virginia school district took an extra be step to stop students from wearing the confederate flag. the montgomery school board

new details right now about two emergency responders who were stabbed in detroit. detroit police say they were trying to help a woman with an injured ankle yesterday. they asked a man with her to step away. then he attacked them with what was a knife. police tracked down that man and arrested him and the woman. they said emts had horrific injuries but are in fair condition now. take a look at this incredible video of a volcano near mexico city. mexico's volcano erupted yesterday afternoon. smoke and ash rose to more than 80 feet above the volcano's crater. the eruption comes after months of rush frlg the volcano. mexico has more than 3,000 volcanoes, about 14 of them are active. we hope you'll join us this saturday for the walk to end hiv in downtown d.c., the fundraising walk and 5k benefits when it mapp walker health.

investigators say an overloaded extension cord likely sparked the fire. bernice washington and 6-year-old died when a fire broke out in the hallway between their bedrooms last week. they died from smoke inhalation. fire crews did manage to get four other people out safely. a new push today to lessen the number of heroin and prescription drug overdose. the obama administration says that they are strange law enforcement and treatment programs and shattering families. president barack obama will visit west virginia later today and during his trip he'll outline efforts aimed at attacking the problem include agnew series of public safety announcements. federal money will also go towards more training for health care professionals at increased access to treatment. deaths in virginia from heroin and opiad outnumbered highway fatalities for the first time last year. new details coming in to the live desk about a deadly fighter jet crash in england.

we understand from the marine corps a fighter jet took off in eastern england early this morning. seven miles into that flight the jet crashed into a farm. we know the pilot of that aircraft died. at this point the authorities there in that part of england as well as the marine corps and the air force are still investigating. the pilot's name or identity has not been released. that will take about 24 hours. we're continuing to dig into this as we learn more information we'll keep you up to date. >> one democratic candidate is in our area today, former maryland governor martin o'malley is here to host a civic tech competition. o'malley didn't move the needle in a new poll from associated press. it asked how people felt about candidate's chances to win. 75% believe clinton could win. 56% they believe joe biden could win. donald trump and jeb bush both

right now police in fairfax county are looking into a crash that killed a pedestrian. chopper 4 was able to catch the tow truck taking the car involved away a little while ago. at this point we know a woman was hit by a car at wiehle avenue and chestnut grove at 7:00 this morning. the driver did stay at the scene. flags are flying at half-staff in new york city right now. this after an nypd officer was killed while on duty last night. he was shot in the dead. new york governor andrew cuomo issued an order to fly that flag at half-staff. right now on capitol hill wisconsin representative paul ryan says he'll take on the role as house speaker if republicans

forecast. a 21-year-old man died after crashing in to a tree in silver spring. it happened overnight off tacoma avenue and happened just after midnight. montgomery county fire said the car threat road, think it tree and burst into flames. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. the family of the victim told news4 he ran out of a convenience store and may have lost control of the car. montgomery county police say the preliminary investigation points to speed as a factor. just into the live desk, d.c. man back in police custody this morning after getting into a fight or punching a metro transit police officer. we're just guesting these details in. i'm going through the police report right now. this happened 10:00 last night, 10:30 on 7th street in chinatown area. this young man, elijah smith apparently punchled a metro police officer in the face at least half a dozen times after

he tried to interfere with another police investigation according to the police report here. smith, you might remember was arrested earlier this year after assaulting a 69-year-old man at the earn market metro station. that assault was caught on some of the security camera there's at the metro station. last year he was arrested for assaulting a man in silver spring, punching an actor in the face several times in that incident. we know now he's been arrested again after assaulting a metro transit police officer and much more detail to go through. look for updates on this story on the nbc washington app and on our newscast this evening. >> new at midday a community is coming together right now to remember lenny robinson. you might have known him as batman. he died earlier this year. kristin wright is live in d.c. where there are more than a dozen superheroes there right

now. >> reporter: right. they were here to be lenny "batman" robinson but to just highlight the work that other superheroes are doing right now with so many sick children in our area. these are true, true superheroes. they save the day each and every time they enter a hospital room to visit a sick child in need of cheering up and in need of that emotional support. today we got to tag along at children's this morning. while it's heartwrenching you see that meeting a superhero up close and personal means the world to these brave kids and their families and it's such an important part of their road to recovery and so that is what hope for henry, the name of the group that mr. robinson, batman, the name of the group that he was a part of. that's what hope for henry is about. today's superhero event was in

honor of lenny "batman" robinson. he was well-known for his compassion and care in visiting children in hospitals across the area, batmobile and all. today his father was here and received the first-ever hope for henry superhero award. >> i never ever realized the extent to which he was revered and loved and the extent that he reciprocated that love to children. >> reporter: and the founder of hope for henry also talked today and she was very touching, talked about how the organization is named for her son henry, who passed away. he was a sick child. and she had a very close relationship with lenny robinson, lenny "batman" robinson. she explained how henry her son's birthday was this past sunday and how robinson would always, always pick up the phone and call because he knew what

narrator: puerto rico's economy is in a death spiral. to make matters worse, washington has plans to cut another $3 billion from the island's healthcare budget. puerto ricans pay the same medicare taxes, but receive less than half the funding of mainland states, leaving the system on life support. more cuts will push the economy to the edge of disaster and put every puerto rican's care in jeopardy. washington needs to act now to save healthcare for the three and a half million us citizens of puerto rico.

trying to hail a plane as if you were hailing a cab is not a good idea. you can see a man in this video running towards a plane. he's now been charged after sprinting on to a runway in colorado to try to stop a plane from take off. police arrested him in denver last month. he did have a ticket for the nighted airlines flight but he was late. he was desperate to get on that plane so he could get to his high school
