jones. she was found dead in upper marlboro, maryland, yesterday. chris gordon is live at the police headquarters there. what can you tell us? >> we have the very latest with julie parker. the spokesperson for the prince george's county police. chris, thank you. we'd like to announce that we do have a suspect in custody who will be charged with first-degree murder in the homicide of amanda jones. >> reporter: are you putting out his name? >> at this point until he is charged we won't reveal has identity. what we can say is we developed this suspect early on in the investigation through witness interviews and collecting evidence at this point. we believe he is the only person who will be charged in this case. we are still awaiting autopsy results on the victim and once we have those we'll provide further information. >> and finally, can you confirm that he was an acquaintance of the victim? >> at this point because we're not revealing who the suspect is, we'll just leave it at that. that we have a suspect in custody. >> reporter: thank you for

joining us on news 4 at 4:00 up. the very latest from julie parker. they tell us an acquaintance of amanda jones has been held here for questioning at the prince george's police headquarters for hours. no confirmation if that person is the person that we have been told as been placed under arrest and charged with first-degree murder. also another development today, amanda jones' daughter went to the jones home in upper marlboro where the murder occurred and spoke publicly today for the very first time. myesha gallway discovered her mother's body in upper marlboro yesterday. she died of injuries of bodily trauma. her daughter says she and other family members immediately told detectives that the man that had been acquaintance with amanda jones had a violent nature that

worried them. >> it's really, really hard to think that someone who knew her, knew her as a person how beautiful of a person she was and how much she meant to her family would do this to her, but there's but i know there is a person that she's involved with that came to mind instantly. >> the perrywood neighborhood here in upper marlboro is still gripped by fear. >> would it help if it turns out if it was not a stranger, but someone she knew? >> a little bit. you feel a little bit at ease and still knowing it's so close to home it's still a fearful feeling that you have. >> reporter: updating this story, we are on standby for a prince george's county news conference with perhaps more details, but here live on news 4 at 4k c:00, we got confirmation that a suspect is in custody in the murder of amanda jones. when that news conference begins

plain-clothes officer who was helping another officer with an arrest on the 700 block northwest last night. elija johnson approached the scene and purchased the officer several times and knocking him to the ground and the two officers were able to subdue smith and arrested him. >> you may remember smith pled guilty for punching a man at the eastern market metro in april and smith is currently on probation for beating and robbing a silver spring actor after a may 2014 performance. in this latest attack, smith is now charged with assaulting a police officer. in the newsroom, i'm wendy rieger, news 4. back to you. right now police are trying to figure out who shot two women in capitol heights. they showed up at a fire station with gunshot wounds early this afternoon. police say the actual shooting took place on pepper mill drive. both women are expected to survive. >> and just into the newsroom, the man accused of killing his girlfriend's teenage son was

i'm julie carey at the fairfax county courthouse where the prosecution has now rested and the defense is beginning its case trying to convince jurors that charles severance has been wrongly accused of killing three alexandria residents. their first witness, a memory expert. dr. daryn -- the purpose of her testimony to try to raise questions about the recall of jeanette franfranco. franco's memory of the shooter was used to create this composite sketch showing a much different beard than the defendant's. but as the trial opened she pointed to charles severance in the courtroom as the man who shot her. dr. strange suggests in a

traumatic event recalling facial features can be unreliable. >> during a highly traumatic experience it will narrow to the most important thing at that moment is on the gun. >> reporter: the prosecution's evidence in this case was also put to the test today. what the judge had to say about it when i join you at 5:00. charles severance's parents take the stand. julie carey will have their testimony in the next hour. more than 240 families call the d.c. general shelter their home. about 400 children live here and many of them teenagers who until now didn't have a place to call their own, but thanks to tens of thousand of dollars in donations and countless volunteer hours, this once abandoned lobby has been transformed into a new team drop-in center. it will be a place where they can do homework, meet with

mentors and counselors as well as tutors and just act like teenagers. i'm mark segraves. coming up later on news 4, we'll tell you what this means for the future of the shelter which many hope would have been closed by now. >> right now we are working to learn more about a woman hit and killed by a car in fairfax county. chopper 4 flew over the scene today at wheelie avenue and chestnut grove square. the woman was hit at 7:00 this morning and the driver did stay at the scene and it is closed during part of the morning rush, but it is now open again. the u.s. department of education has launched a federal civil rights investigation into the university of mary washington in fredericksburg. this comes after a member of the student group feminist united was in april. at a press conference today the group said many of its members receive threats on social media before the man was killed and they claim nothing was done about it.

suburbs. we got to 35 in culpeper this morning and 36 manassas and 37 in frederick and 48 in the district and a very, very cool start and we warmed rapidly across our region. as a matter of fact, we are now 40 degrees warmer in places like culpeper than we were earlier this morning. 73 degrees right now and that's a good 25-degree difference from where we were this morning and wends out of the south and abundant sunshine and it is beautiful all across the region. 75 in frederick, and 75 down toward fredericksburg and the big winner, leesburg coming in at 77 degrees and it is simply gorgeous. a great night to get out on the bike, and sunset tonight, 22 degrees and dropping to 56 by 8:00 tomorrow morning and by noon tomorrow, take a bike ride around noon and maybe lunch outdoors. by noon we're talking 70 degrees and a great, great day tomorrow and almost no rain in the forecast at all and gray skies

something to watch out for and we'll continue to watch it for you from the storm center and veronica has the rest of the weekend and next week's forecast coming up in a bit. the delivery giant defrauded taxpayers in virginia and the district. virginia's attorney general announced a 4 million settlement against ups today. it's accused of overcharging for next-day shipping by recording inaccurate delivery times on tax-payer funded shipments sent by government agencies. the attorney general's office says ups now has new training and reporting programs in place. the vatican is categorically denying a newspaper report that pope francis has a brain tumor. the pope held his weekly general audience before thousands in st. peter's square. hours earlier a small italian newspaper said the pope saw a japanese specialist who diagnosed that he has a small brain tumor that could be cured without surgery. today a vatican spokesman says the pope is in good health and

added that his head is, quote, absolutely perfect. lenny robinson was quite the crusader. for ten years he dressed up as batman and visited sick children in our local hospitals. tragically robinson died in an accident two months ago. 15 superheroes stopped by the medical center for a special event in robinson's honor. they visited every patient there and they gave every youngster a x)pr(t&háhp &hc% their day just like lenny used to do. his father appreciated the show of support. >> i never ever realized the extent to which he was revered and loved and to the extent that he resip kaciprocated that love children. >> it was hope for henry, a program designed to bring joy to

force awakens" are out of this world. after some folks went on twitter to try to organize a boycott. whur's troy johnson is here with today's talk around town. what is behind the call of boycott and who started it? >> it started with boycott star wars 7 and a small group of folks on twitter suggested that the film was made to demoralize and destroy whites. people making outlandish comments and racist claims about the movie and what's worse than that, people are telling me it overshadows a great movement for a guy named john boyega. you don't know him now, but he's the main star of this film and lupita nyong'o is also in this movie and this backlash overshadows what people are looking forward to, at least the folks i was talking to. >> a lot of twitter users think the boycott is silly is they point to the original series and the original movie and the original stars.

>> exactly. we're talking about these people that are boycotting, people saying they obviously don't know their jedi history and if you think billy dee williams, and james earl jones. >> the voice of darth vader. so there have been prominent african-americans throughout this film. a lot of people, though, african-americans were critical of the character jar jar binks which came in the later films because it may have been what they perceived as a racist character and the point is people have been following along with this movie and know the ins and outs and african-american viewers are very savvy. they know what they like. >> the debate hasn't dampened the excitement. with ticket sales literally off the charts. >> when you start the film off by releasing a trailer during monday night football you're reaching an audience that may not even be tuned into the whole star wars saga. it generated such a reaction. you had 17,000 tweets per minute

and 13 million views of the trailer on youtube. 2.1 million interactions, 13 million views, as i say on twitter and that leads to $6.5 million in early ticket sales according to imax. it's generated money and the film isn't even out already and the buzz is strong and what is also interesting is the fact that a lot of people don't know the buying dollar of the african-american at the movie theater. this may resonate with them because african-americans spend some $1 billion at the movie theater, and most people say those numbers are conservative numbers. so these are savvy viewers. they like the films just like everybody else. it doesn't necessarily, as folks tell me, it doesn't have to be a madd madea movie for folks to show up. >> may the force be with you. >> caught in the cross fire. a toddler killed in a road rage attack. why finding the killers has proved to be difficult.

attention toyota drivers there is a new recall because of a fire risk. the recall involves it is camry, tundra and sequoia models between 2005 and 2010. the vehicles have a faulty power window switch ask debris can cause it to shock circuit and catch fire. the recall involves nearly 3 million vehicles in north america. toyota will get in touch with you if you own one of the recalled cars. new numbers on mcdonald's all-day breakfast sales show some restaurant operators are not loving it. 29 mcdonald's franchisees responded to a recent survey saying the new menu has slowed down service and reduced the average cost of what customers buy. a mcdonald's spokeswoman countered by saying an overwhelming majority of its 3100 franchisees still think all-day breakfast is a hit. talk about higher education, the world's tallest dorm is now open in new york city. owned by pace university, the

right now. police in new mexico are searching for the killer of a 4-year-old girl after a deadly case of road rage. >> i'm sorry.

lily garcia was shot after a man sprayed bullets into her parent's truck in albuquerque. >> there is now a description of the shooter, but as jay gray reports, police are getting conflicting accounts and they're hoping more witnesses come forward. >> reporter: it happened along this stretch of interstate 40 in albuquerque. >> the truck was literally going across several lanes and just to avoid this vehicle to pass. >> reporter: road rage that investigators say ended with murder. >> one car pulled up against the other car and started firing rounds into that vehicle. >> reporter: one of those rounds killing a 4-year-old girl inside this truck. >> i've seen tragic loss of children in car crashes. to me, this is one of those crimes which is unexplainable. >> reporter: veteran officers struggling to understand the tragedy and to find the suspect. >> we are in desperate need of information to help us resolve the conflicting information we're getting right now. >> reporter: that information from witnesses about the suspect

dime-sized hail across the entire area. quite the opposite story here in washington, though. meteorologist veronica johnson is in the storm center. we're getting some pretty nice stuff for fall, veronica. >> that we are. hard to believe and almost like a late summer day especially tomorrow when you consider temperatures aren't going to be going up. el paso, they're getting more storms right now. we're talking about showers for tomorrow tonight and early tomorrow morning and the orionid, and you should be able to see 20 to 25 per hour and the skies will be mostly clear and that will be good viewing for us for anybody up that early and maybe heading to work at that time. as far as out there this eaching if you'll be running or doing anything recreational or maybe taking the dog for a walk, low to mid-60s by 7:00, 8:00, a nice evening headed our way and we have high pressure across our area and very few clouds move into the area today. tomorrow, there will be some

i was at my shop tied up with a customer when i realized the time. i had to get to the bank before it closed, so i made a break for it. when i got out it was almost closing time. traffic was bad. i knew i was cutting it close. but it was ok.

passengers say a man who appeared to be drunk got really loud and then threatened flight attendants by pointing his finger at them as if it were a gun and he had to be restrained and it happened onboard an american airlines flight and the plane was diverted to phoenix and that passenger was taken into custody. the family of a man killed in palm beach county, florida, are planning a protest as they wait for the results of an independent review. officer norman raha shot corey jones on sunday. raha was in plain clothes and in an unmarked police car when he approached what he thought was an abandoned car. he said he was suddenly confronted by a man with a gun. officer raha shot jones killing him and both the police department and the family say they hope the investigation brings peace. >> i firmly believe that the family, along with the public and our police department deserve answers to the multitude of outstanding questions that can only be obtained through a

when holder and fellow officers from the anti-crime and housing division responded to a call of shots fired stemming from a gang fight at 102nd and first avenue. after witnesses reported seeing four men flee that scene and run toward the fdr heading northbound, a report of a man who says his gun was stolen at gun point at 106th street. there was an exchange of gun fire between the two men and officers. during this exchange, officer holder was struck in the head. >> at first we were, like, that can't begun shot, but it turned out it was. all hell broke loose. it was pretty crazy. >> reporter: officer holder was rushed to harlem hospital where he later died. the alleged gunman now identified as 31-year-old tyrone howard of harlem was shot twice, but didn't stop until officers finally nabbed him near 124th street as the search continues along the fdr for the murder
