over for driving under the speed limit at 25 miles per hour. clay, the passenger, jumped out of the car. the officer chased him and police say clay pulled his trigger in what would have been a point-blank shot. >> it was most likely user error. there were approximately, i believe there were nine rounds in the magazine. he just did not know at the time that you actually have to chamber a round and then it will put it into the chamber and it will fire. >> the officer took clay into custody without firing. >> the officer could have returned fire and he would have been justified. >> reporter: clay had open warrants and one for an attempted murder that happened in riverdale and that may be why he responded to them the way he did. it is also important to note that a prince george's county sheriff's deputy also assisted in this arrest. >> reporting live in riverdale, i'm tracee wilkins and now breaking news in the pacific.

the storm that just formed two days ago and it has morphed into a monster category 5 hurne and it's expected to make landfall tonight and hurricane patricia has weakened only a bit and sustained winds still at 190 miles an hour and it has the title of the strongest hurricane ever to form in the western hemisphere. more than 70 million people are in its path and that includes thousands of tourists who have been trying to get out of harm's way. >> i'm just worried because -- i mean, if we can't get out of here and we drove into town which is not the direction that we wanted to go then we are riding it out here. >> mexican authorities have issued a state of emergency. storm team 4 has been tracking this hurricane all day. >> doug and veronica, when are we expecting landfall? just a couple of hours? >> probably around the 8:00, 9:00 hour and the storm has

weakened down to 190 miles an hour, but that is still 45 miles per hour above the threshold to become a category 5. really incredible out there just how strong this storm is. >> we'll continue to monitor right through the weekend and the moisture and anything from hurricane patricia will not impact our area and i'll have that weekend event forecast coming up. >> you can see hurricane patricia and a very wide storm here and a large-looking storm, but the center very, very small and has very good news and the hurricane force winds are only 30 miles from the center and we're looking at manzanillo and port vallarta and the two populated areas and winds of 190 miles an hour at 14 miles per hour and as it moves up, manzanillo i really think is under the gun here and 100,000 people live in the port city and port vallarta, a little bit better news here and these are the winds and these are hurricane force only in the red.

the american commando killed in a raid in iraq was the father of four from oklahoma. we have more on the mission to rescue the isis hostages and the shift in foreign policy. here's richard engel. >> reporter: an important announcement from the pentagon. u.s. military officials identified the first american soldier killed in the u.s.-led war on isis. the american commando, 39-year-old joshua wheeler from oklahoma died earlier this week in a rescue operation that saved

70 hostages who were being held by isis at a prison in iraq and as the pentagon was announcing this and praising master sergeant wheeler for his bravery it also became apparent that u.s. troops, despite repeated claims by the administration and repeated promises that it would never hbecaen clear that the u.s. was involved in direct combat operations in iraq and secretary of defense ash carter said there would be more operations like this to come, more instances where american special operations forces would be going after isis targets and potentially involved in close-quarter combat. if you listen to the statements from president obama repeatedly, he said that would never happen, that this is an assist mission, that american troops here are supposed to be on their bases providing logistical support, intelligence and not engaged in

by his stepson who shot him 18 times after an argument over yardwork. detective newell's widow was not invited to today's dedication, but as news 4's chris gordon tells us, she showed up anyway. >> she pulled up right up in front of sixth district police headquarters in northeast washington. bernadette newell was determined to be here for the dedication of the new detective office honoring her late husband, detective joseph newell. she stood in the back watching other family members get the recognition for her 24 years of service. >> our family could not be more grateful to the metropolitan police department. sixth district, you will hold a bond in our lives forever. >> detective joseph newell was shot to death by his stepson antoine james during a quarrel during yardwork. james was charged with shooting his stepfather 18 times. although james was charged with

ward. back to you. a d.c. man who works in the office of religious affairs has been released for supervision. >> lorenzo saunders was arrested earlier this month and he's accused of selling cocaine, crack and heroin in front of his home in southeast around the corner from an elementary school. mayor bowser has said she doesn't know saunders, but tells news 4 he will be held to a higher standard. >> they were trapped on the third floor and couldn't get out and now a multimillion dollar lawsuit has been fired in dupont circle this summer. the parents of the two victims killed in this row house fire that was in rigs place are suing the homeowner for negligence and wrongful death. >> nina burklesman and michael mclaughlin were killed in june and the families are seeking $10 million for each child. they claim the home had no working smoke detectors, and windows that would not open.

training. for a local couple that means more than logging miles. news 4 meagan fitzgerald has more on their story. >> that's right back after the second deployment and the picture says it all. >> pictures say so many things. they can capture moments that remind us of our commitments. >> we just passed our eight-year anniversary in september. >> teresa and david's love story started in college never knowing where their journey would lead. >> i knew he was going into the military when we met, and i didn't know what that meant. >> me neither. >> two years later it meant days with going to war. he and his platoon deployed to afghanistan in 2009. >> i didn't know what to think. it was scary. i was home with an 18-month-old

baby and pregnant with another one. >> the stress was running high. he was in a combat zone while teresa tried to manage things back at home until she found an escape. teresa joined a running group with other women whose spouses were deployed and running became her distraction. it was something she didn't realize how much she needed until she got the call. >> my vehicle was the third one back and ran over an 80-pound ied right underneath my seat. it was rattling. >> dave suffered from a traumatic brain injury which affect his short-term memory and he received a purple heart and returned home. >> we tried to hold on to every moment, but dave was deployed again and when he would return teresa could tell things had changed. >> he has come back a little different every single time. >> teresa says when there's love and there's a commitment there's always a way back to each other.

the weather. will i be shivering? will i be wet? temperatures in the mid-50s and you may get shower activity and i'm not expecting a ton of rain. i want to show you what's happening with the latest from patricia as it is currently making landfall right now as a category 5 hurricane. only the second one to ever do so on the west coast of mexico and you can see where it's coming ashore, just to the north of manzanillo. that means manzanillo will get hit extremely hard with the very heavy winds as well as the storm surge there, too, will have a big problem there. one thing i'm watching as this storm makes its way inland it will be far enough south and east of port vallarta that they're not going to see the worst of the storm. they'll still have major problems there, and the worst of this will be down toward the manzanillo area and cool condition, 69 degrees by 11:00
