>> yes. >> how do you prepare for this? >> i race 150 miles a week. it's something i do. >> reporter: i'm from florida. it's kind of flat there. any comparisons? >> this wasn't flat like florida. >> reporter: first time marine corps marathon and here you are winning for the women. congratulations to you. >> thank you. >> reporter: i had a chance to catch up with the 10k for women sheechls from vienna, virginia. >> i think women are definitely taking more time for themselves than they've done in the past and i'm from vienna, virginia, and there's a group called moms run this town. there are over 1,400 women. so i think women are supporting women and women have families that are supporting them more than they ever have before.

>> reporter: back live now at the finish line. we're waiting for the full marathon winners to cross. we hope to have them on before 10:30. as history proves they will cross the finish line. we'll cover that too. now i want to send it over toy colleague meagan fitzgerald. >> reporter: hains point. this is the 12-mile point. it's also referred to as the wear blue mile. it's a chance to pay their respect and say thank you to the fallen men and women of all bra branches of the military. you can see the runners coming in droves. some of them visibly emotional. others excited to be out here finishing the race. pictures of these heroes are on a stick placed in the ground lining the street. 300 volunteers are holding flags

as the runners pass by. this is the part of the race where they'll slow down and soak in the moment and refleck and give thanks to those who die. some say they'll speed up, run faster, fighting through whatever pain. they say if these men and women can fight for us, i can finish up. it's also very meaningful for the volunteers as well. again, there's 300 volunteers holding the american flags. many of them are veterans themselves. a very personal meet for a lot of folks who are out here. back to you. >> meagan fitzgerald for us this morning. thank you so much. >> reporter: now, in case you did miss it. we want to take you back to the signature moments. take a look at this. this is spectacular. the team actually owns and performs with the largest american flags flown by a

skydiver. get this. 7,800 square feet. that's how big it is. here's another great moment from the morning. the osprey flyover. two of the helicopters flew over the line before the hand cyclers took off. it's nicknamed the marathon on monuments for good reason. right now runners are passing some of the mon moneymeumentmon. the race as you can tell, it snakes through d.c. and ends in virginia where it began. the route is a little bit different than in past years as it passes through crystal city. you can see those changes in the n nbc washington app as well as the road closures. >> of course, you can keep one our team coverage of the marine corps marathon all day. the nbc app, that's the place to go for that. we have a whole section dedicated. geerng to have more live coverage throughout the hour and we're expecting the first

good luck to everybody. keep going. in other new this morning a virginia community is trying to come to terms with the idea that a school shooting could have happened in their town. two students from river bend high school in fredericksburg were arrested in connection with an alleged plot. investigators say students planned to call in a bomb threat and then shoot students and teachers as they left the high school. >> a serious threat. >> whether they would have succeeded, whether they would have actually carried it out, it's too early to say. >> we learn one student is 15 years old. the other is 17. they're being held at a juvenile detention facility and will be in court next week. it was uncovered through text messages and media postings that led concerned students to call the authorities. parents were sent the letter about the alleged plot. to read the letter, open up the

nbc washington app and search "school violence." on month the montgomery school board is going to meet about its holiday calendar. the "news4" i-team broke the story this year. prince harry, he's coming to d.c. this week. he's coming thursday to talk about the invictus game. he'll spend time with wounded servicemembers. and we want to take you back outside live at what was the starting line and now is the finish line. we're so anxiously awaiting the first finisher of the 40th marine corps marathon. we have live team coverage all morning long. you can see there are a lot of different people running. there's a reason they call this the people's marathon. we have more than 30,000 hitting the pavement which started out as wet pavement this morning. some of them so inspiring, running with a flag. you know that one of our viewers, larry gonzalez, told us

he was going to run the entire 26.2 miles carrying that flag. julie caring posting a lot of inspiring pictures along the route. these people come from 55 countries we're told, 45% of them women. that's a record this year. a lot of great stories are going to be crossing that finish line today and we're go

all right. 10:13 on the dot. we take a look at the marine corps marathon race live. we're going to check in at the starting line in just a minute, which is also close to the finish line. "news4's" jim handly is there. we're going to see the first runners and winners come through, jim, in what do you think? the next 10 or 15 minutes? >> reporter: probably sooner than that. another story here. we have a woman running for two. you said you're running for two but it's three. >> i say that because my brother's always with me. >> he died when? >> it will be 11 in may next year. >> he served.

>> afghanistan, marine corps. he's buried in arlington. >> you've got a picture of him and a picture of your newborn which will be born when? >> we're hoping december 31st. that would be a great, bringing in the new year. >> what was it like? >> i felt so proud. i was with my mom who unfortunately has a broken toe as well. it's a little difficult with a 7 1/2-month baby in there but it's wonderful. such a great experience and so much support for this great cause. >> job well done. congratulations. >> thank you. >> now they can say they won their first marine corps marathon. >> yes. >> reporter: we're waiting for them to cross the finish line. we're at the finish line. we're going to bring that picture to you live. adam and angie, back to you for now. >> thank you so much. so many stories leave you speechless. >> if you feel like you can't

get off the coup. 7 1/2 month. it's amazing. >> she joins us live for mile marker 12, also known as the wear blue mile. how's it going out there, meagan? >> reporter: feeling great. they're exciting, energized, emotional. as you can see they've been running for ore an hour now. many of them visibly emotional because they've paid tribute to the fallen men and women of our armed services. they died in the line of duty. they're from all branches of the military. many of the 300 volunteers holding an american flag are veterans themselves. they all have different reasons for being out here. they're unique and they're also very personal. take a listen.

>> didn't serve in the military myself but every single person here run for the fallen, for the fighting, and for the family. >> reporter: the runners are great. some of them stopping by to say hello or slapping high-fives. they seem very focused, very excited, very driven to finish the next 14 miles of the race here. we're expecting the last runner to pass by at 11:30 this morning and we'll be out there for them when they come. there goes another one. back to you. >> thank you, meagan. we're taking a live picture now. you saw that picture. this is what we believe to be the first place finisher of the marathon. he's running so fast that our cameras can't keep up.

he's really sprinting. trevor fontaine. with a good head of steam coming down. nobody in his sights. s he ooh dusting the competition. our jim handly at the finish line. he's going to check in with him and see how he feels. he's taking a look behind to make sure. he's going to cruise on in. remember this race start at about 7:55 this morning. so this is about what, a little over two hours that we're working on here, 2 1/2 hours. >> and trevor making his way as this course unfurled and then he's going to make his way to marshal drive. anyone who's done this race befo before, this is nice and flat but the hill you have to go up

better. all of a sudden she had a good debate performance, then benghazi, biden dropped out. this thing is starting to put together now. that said the voters still need to speak. ber any sanders does have a good following. as we found out before, when she is in the clear, that's when she find as pothole. she's better when her back's against the wall. >> we also want to talk about paul ryan because a few weeks ago when we talked, i ask, what about paul ryan, he said he doesn't want the job and look how things have changed. >> it is. by the way, he is -- forget what you may think of him politically. i don't care which side of the aisle. i'm always -- i always want to see politicians who have some political capital. use it. he had political capital with conservatives, he's used it. i think that's all the american public can ask for. in this case it's his party. he stepped up. it's not good for his family. but if not him, who. and there was though who. i think the party would have

>> reporter: we are back at the finish light ryan now. we have been saying 9,000 runners representing every branch of the military. the winner today represented the army. trevor lafontaine with a time of 2:24. his goal was 2:25. he beat his goal. we were the first to talk to him just a moment ago. here's what he had to say. >> well, that was my first ever marathon and i'm glad to have done it at the marine marathon. i was an awesome course. i was happy to go out and beat my goal. i'm glad to represent the army. >> the first female to come across will be jenny swanker.

i was at my shop tied up with a customer when i realized the time. i had to get to the bank before it closed, so i made a break for it. when i got out it was almost closing time. traffic was bad. i knew i was cutting it close. but it was ok.
