one person is dead, another person in critical condition. tragedy strikes the sports world and the loss is affecting many people in our region. former wizards coach flip saunders loses his battle with cancer. a lot of you talking about the redskins' last-second win and why this victory was one for the history books. news 4 at 6:00 starts right now. off the top at 6:00, dozens of shots rang out near a restaurant in prince george's county. one woman killed and a man fighting for his life. news 4's derrick ward talks to witnesses in fort washington about this. >> reporter: it's a popular

institution on the potomac in prince george's county at the fort washington marina, across the river they haven't changed that much since george washington was the land baron on the virginia side, but boaters now ride the waters near a popular spot for a dinner party. >> and replaces all of those things and more and the most disturbing sound you hear here is from the jets that fly overhead in the airport, and a more disturbing sound up front that had the people back here scrambling. >> we were just out there having a nice time and we heard gunshots and everybody started running. >> what they saw at the front of proud mary's was disturbing. >> there was blood everywhere. >> the shooting appeared to happen outside the restaurant on park service land. two people were hit by gun fire. a woman pronounced dead on the scene and a man rushed to the hospital with what police are calling life-threatening injuries based on those who heard the gun fire recall it was surprising more people weren't

hit. >> 30 shots. >> park police are following lead, but no arrests yet. in fort washington, derrick ward, news 4. former wizards coach flip saunders died of cancer. he led the team for a few years. >> flip saunders lost his battle with cancer and he passed away at the age of 60. very impressive resume, for 17 seasons he roamed the sidelines as a head coach. back in june, saunders was diagnosed with hodgkins lymphoma and he was with the organization he started with with the minnesota timberwolfs and he was the acting coach, team president and part owner. it was announced saunders would miss the entire 2015 season after being hospitalized with a minor setback. coming up later, we will hear from one of flip's former players and former wizards head

basketball coach flip saunders passing away at the age of 60. >> thank you so very much. there is a memorial to remember all of the area's shooting victims in rockville right now. volunteers hung these shirt, all 155 of them to honor each victim of gun violence who died last year. the group, heeding god's call organized the event and you can see the memorial at the presbyterian church at old georgetown road. can you believe it? a new marathon and trevor lafontaine finished two minute ahead of the next closest man at 2:24 and then jenny suanca from costa rica torched the rest of the women's field finishing more than seven minute ahead of the next woman. the marathon of the monument also gives racers of all abilities a chance to show off their hard work. >> i was in afghanistan in 2008 i got hit with an rpg. it has been the best experience

we told you about this next story first on 4:00. two metro employees being hailed as heroes for taking down a robbery suspect. news 4's darcy spencer is learning more about that individual and we've got a picture of him tonight, as well. darcy? >> reporter: that's right, erica. this could have been a much more serious situation. we had a guy with a loaded handgun on a metro train. in fact, he had already robbed a victim at gun point at the anacostia metro station. apparently, he flashed the gun in his waistband and then stole

$40 in cash from that passenger there at the anacostia station and then hopped on a train. let's go to a video of the suspect. he's 20 years old, rondez tibbs of southeast washington. he's been charged with armed robbery and carrying a pistol without a license and he's on probation for another armed robbery and he's already back out on the street. let's show you another photo that was taken yesterday while this was unfolding and it was on a metro train and it was being searched during this investigation. after the robbery in anacostia, two metro employees got involved when he got into an argument with the passengers and one of the employees held down the suspect. when the employee saw that this suspect was reaching into his jacket pocket, he asked him do you have a gun? at that point the suspect said yes, i do. the metro employee was able to get that gun out of the pocket and move it to the side out of

the reach of the suspect and hold him down until metrotransity police arrived. >> metro opened a statement and the manager praising for these employees for what they saved. the remnants of patricia and other factors can bring us rain in the coming days. emilia is standing by with the full forecast. today's marine corps marathon was about competition and it was about participants to show their appreciation for the military. military.
