hollis. i'm molette green, we're following several breaking stories. intense flames inside a local high school. several students flown to the hospital. we're tracking it all. >> i'm barbara harrison. a major announcement from the white house about our military's presence overseas. >> and fuel spilling into the potomac. i'm aaron gilchrest, news 4 midday starts right now. david culver here in fairfax county coming to you live from woodson high school. just on scene after a fire was

reported at the school. a fire in a chemistry classroom. it has left five students injured. we know two of those students were transported via a helicopter to washington hospital. they are in serious condition. those injuries being taken seriously. another three students were taken to a local hospital. they were ground transported. their injuries said to be non-life threatening. that fire started in a chemistry classroom. we know that fire is out at this hour. i want to set the stage back here live where i am on the back end of woodson high school, just off main street. 236 and picket road. we can show you from chopper 4 what is the football field here at woodson high school. all the students have been evacuated from the school. they've been taken to the football field, taken to tennis courts. i spoke on phone with one student who said he's in a bus right now.

not being let off that bus. he was coming back to woodson from an outside course he was taking. he said they're keeping them on the bus for an indefinite period of time. he said he's been told that other buses will be coming in to transport other students possibly back home. that's ninformation we're workig to confirm. all the students have been taken out of the building. those five who were injured are being treated now, two at washington hospital center, the other three at a local hospital. those three with nonlife threatening injuries. a developing and breaking story at this hour. back to you. >> david sculver, thank you. i want%50oñ to go to dan smith fairfax county fire. are you there? >> yes. >> update us on the conditions of the five students who were hurt here. what's the latest on them? >> we did transport five

students which of which were medevac'd to the hospital burn center. we don't know their conditions. however those two students have potential life-threatening injuries. the other three students were taken by ground transport to enova fairfax county hospital. >> noing there are experiments that can go on in these rooms what do you know about the fire, where it started, what may have contributed to the flames. >> it was a science laboratory classroom. we don't know the particulars on what happened. it was a small fire. firefighters along with the sprinkler system put out the fire. we did have the five injuries. again, this is under investigation right now. you know, we'll hopefully have something soon. >> we know that the building was evacuated. the entire school evacuated, right? >> correct. >> what was the -- why evacuate

the entire school if the fire was contained to one classroom. >> not sure of the school protocols, but anything to take precautionary measures is the recommended route when it comes to safety of children and students. >> as far as fairfax fire is concerned at this point, what's the next step? what are you doing on the property there? >> we are investigating what happened along with the police department. >> all right. dan schmit with the fairfax county fire department. appreciate your time. we'll reach out to you throughout the day, i'm sure. >> thanks. breaking news now. the u.s. is sendinged more troops to syria and iraq. richard engel learned the white house will announce the deployment of more special ops teams to fight isis. they'll be stationed in northern syria. u.s. fighter jet also start operating out of turkey. previously president obama said troops in the region would not engage in combat. this comes along side report's

cease-fire in syria military officials told the associated press several world powers are in talks to end combat in syria within the next four to six months. more breaking news a s at rn national airport. there may have been a fuel spill that may have impacted travel. crews are working to try to contain this spill. the airport says it started at some point overnight. megan mcgrath is there. she will bring us more details on that spill. >> we are working to find out more about the driver who hit a maryland state trooper and took off on the highway. this happened about 4:00 this morning on the outer loop of the bell way and forrestville road. the trooper was in the car and was not badly hurt. the road was blocked off for a while as they searched for a suspect. >> we are awaiting the appearance of an arlington man

expected to be in court here today in connection with the death of his wife. this crime happened back on april 17th. 46-year-old david black is due to face charges in connection with the death of his estranged wife bonnie black. back on april 17th their children were found wandering the 1100 block of 18th street in arlington. they were in pajamas. neighbors were alerted. they called police. police responded to the home that the two at one point shared. they found bonnie black stabbed to death. authorities say the two were in the midst of divorce, and they say david black forced his way into the home and killed bonnie black. david black's home had been searched back in september. he was named a person of interest but no charges were brought. these charges follow his appearance before an investigative grand jury. that's when he was named as an actual suspect. that's not an unheard of occurrence, but it is rare in cases like this. this is when the jury itself

starts to seek out evidence instead of waiting for the police department or investigators to come up with that evidence. that evidence was found in the questioning and hence his appearance in court here today. he's facing one first degree murder charge and a charge of burglary while armed in the commission of a felony. right now we are in arlington, derrick ward, news 4. a cool but beautiful friday so far. currently temperatures at 55 degrees. full sunshine. we'll keep mostly sunny skies around this afternoon and early evening hours. 1:00, temperature around 57. high today of 60. temperatures today almost 15 degrees cooler than yesterday. 5:00, temperature around 59, still tracking mostly sunny skies at that point. as we do move on into the evening hours. temperatures are going to drop. dining out tonight, expect temperatures in the 50s. jack wet weather, but at least the weather will be dry. tomorrow, starting off in the

>> the investigators from the ntsb are trying to find out what nearly dead to disaster at ft. lauderdale airport. 101 passengers and crew were getting ready for takeoff when the crew behind them saw fuel leaking. a moment later the dynamic jet's left engine caught fire. two emergency chutes were deployed and the plane was quickly evacuated. two dozen people went to the hospital to get checked out. d.c. leaders are honoring

the exorcist at a perfect time, the night before halloween. the movie was set in georgetown and filmed there. today the d.c. mayor and several council members are putting up a plaque at the exorcist steps near georgetown university. the movie's director will be there. he will be ready to sign something for you. anything you bring along that you want signed. he'll do it there on the steps at 4:00 this afternoon. the main event begins at 6:00 p.m. tonight. look out above, the wild animal that has a community keeping a close eye on the skies.

start, 44. we'll crack 50 at 10:00 a.m. if you want go for that walk or jog, maybe wade until late morning afternoon hours. 6:00, trick or treating underway, probably will want to have a jacket. temperature of 57. i'll have the latest hour by hour on sunday. we all want our halloween to be full of treats, not tricks. the american association of poison control centers has advise to keep you and your kids safe. for costumes, with makeup, they say test out that makeup somewhere else on your arm, wrist, somewhere else before using it on your face. you could avoid an allergic reaction on your face that way. also tell your kids not to chew on those glow sticks or put anything else in their mouths that glows in the dark. the liquid inside can irritate skin. and if they swallow it, that could be dangerous. after your children trick or treat, check that candy to make sure it's sealed. throw away things that your kids

could choke on, don't eat treats that strangers have given you that's open or homemade. the owl with an attitude is back apparently. montgomery county parks got three reports about owl attacks on tuesday. this is according to bethesda magazine. the attacks happened between river road and dorsett avenue in bethesda near the capital cress st. trail. that's where the owl attacked two weeks ago. joggers reporting that the owl swooped down aggressively. some were hit. the owl stole a couple of hats. wild life officials believe it's a young owl mistaking reflectors for food. >> breaking news, flames erupt inside woodson high school in fair fox county. at least five people are hurt. at least five people are hurt. we'll have

buses waiting to go home. we just got confirmation from fairfax fire that this blaze originated in a sirens lab. well have much more on this story coming up from the scene there where david culver is and update s throughout the day on nbc washington app. back to you. i'm megan mcgrath live at ronald reagan airport where environmental crews are on the scene mopping up a jet fuel spill. you can see those crews behind me here. they have specialized equipment including floating absorbent booms in the water here on the south side of the airport sopping up that jet fuel. now, last night an employee here at airport smelled the odor of fuel in the air. a little while later another employee saw a sheen on the water. right here along the road that leads to the employee parking here. that's when they realized they had a fuel spill on their hands.

there's a very large storage facility, a fuel storage facility close to this area. that was the source of the leak they believe. and so they have at this point, we're told, stopped the leak. so no more fuel is going into the river here. but they certainly have some clean up to do. in terms of how much got into the water, i'm told by the spokesperson that they know worst case between 7500 and 9,000 gallons of fuel is missing from that container. that's not to say that all of it went into the water. they're not saying that. but certainly some of it did. they are working to contain it. they think the environmental impact will be limited. they're not seeing fuel in the main channel of the river, just here along the south side. crews are on the scene taking care of it. this is not affecting flights or airport operations. back to you all in the studio. >> thank you. even though this giant runaway blimp is grounded, it's still proving hard to get rid

of. in 24 hours the military plans on using a helicopter to try to remove it from a forrest in pennsylvania. there's an investigation as to how it broke free in maryland and drifted 150 miles across pennsylvania. the military began cutting it out of the trees where it landed on wednesday. the only thing left to do is lift the 10,000 pound blimp out of those trees. on saturday we're looking at increasing clouds throughout the day. sunday is going to be a cloudy day. here's future weather at 8:00 a.m. it will be a dry start as we work our way throughout the day. the chance of light showers increases. notice how at noon still tracking dry but cloudy conditions across the area. as we get into the afternoon and evening hours we will bring in about a 40% chance of light rain. dry at 3:00. there is about a 20% to 30% chance that you're dealing with a light shower at that point. more shower the loving into the area during the evening and overnight hours. believe it or not, there's mid 70s on the seven-day. i'll let you know what days

those are coming up in about ten minutes. a 10-year-old is seriously hurt during a shark attack in hawaii. he says it wasn't that bad. he was body boarding when this all happened. nearby swimmers say he was 60 yards offshore when the attack happened. they were able to bring him to shore and help him until medics happened. >> i was on a boogie board, it popped out of nowhere and bite my leg. it wasn't that bad. >> wasn't that bad. all right. raymond's mother says he will return to school on monday. lifeguards say shark warnings have been posted in that area since the attack. they say it was the first shark attack at that beach in 46 years. an incredible story. an incredible story. a young boy falls from a window

lighting up on the nbc washington facebook page. a 3-year-old boy fell three stories from a bathroom at his house and then stood up and walked away unhurt. the boy apparently landed on his grandmother's framed picture of jesus at the last summer that was sitting outside their home. >> so many hipsters have beards now. every single person i knew was sending me this article about just what was potentially in my beard. >> what is your biggest fear? what would be in your beard? >> i think we all know what the biggest fear is on that one. human waste. >> will forte had his beard tested for bacteria before appearing on "tonight show." it was swabbed by a scholar from ucla. his beard, indeed, tested positive for several bacterias

david culver back with you with breaking coverage from woodson high school. a classroom fire injured five students. we just learned that a teacher has been injured as well. we are on the back end of the school. of the activity on the front end now. students have been evacuated to the football field and tennis court. i wanted to show you video of this scene as it broke out around 9:40 this morning. that's when that fire started. we know two students were seriously hurt. life threatening injuries. they were air lafted to washington hospital burn center. three other students were taken

by balance to hospitals treated for nonlife threatening injuries. that teacher's injuries are also nonlife threatening. she's speaking with fire officials as well as officials with the fairfax county public school system to discuss what exactly happened there. they're not sure how this fire started. that fire is out at this hour. behind me you can see over my shoulder, we can actually hear on the loud speaker that students are gathered on the stands of the football stadium. that's where they've been evacuated to. they're being thanked for their patience. they've been out here for an hour, waiting for more information. waiting to know if they'll go home. i caught up with captain randy bittinger, he updated me on the evacuation process. >> upon arrival our units found one classroom, one of the checal labs classrooms had a small fire still active.

the sprinklers held the fire in check to that one classroom. >> students who were injured, their parents were notified directly by the school. all parents have been notified as well as to what is going on here. >> that was john torre telling me that they're trying to work out details on what will happen with the students now. the students already had an early dismissal scheduled for today. they will work that out and let parents know. we'll keep it out here. i have my colleague, megan fitzgerald, just a few feet from me. she's speaking with a student right now. she'll join us within this broadcast to update you from a student's perspective as to what played out here. coming to you live from fairfax, david culver, news 4. >> here at the live desk following bad weather in texas that created some very scary

on monday. barbara? back to you. >> all right. if you drive a honda, listen up. there's a big recall to tell but this morning. in 2008 and 2009 honda according have faulty air bags. they can inflate if you slam the door too hard. honda says the ignition has to be on for the problem to occur. at least 19 people have filed injury claims. honda says you can take your car to a dealership to get the problem fixed. another recall to tell you about. if you drive a car made by fiat chrysler. the company is recalling nearly 900,000 jeep, dodge and fiat suvs made between 2012 and 2015. they say moisture can build up in the brake controls totally disabling the brake system and the stability control. also several hundred thousand jeep grand cherokees and liberties are being recalled because air bags can inflate for no reasons. those cars made in 2003 and 2004

ai'm melissa mollet. t this weekend we have a new situation on massachusetts avenue. road work starting saturday and going to last for a month. it's a traffic shift. massachusetts avenue at h street there in northwest. here is what we know right now. massachusetts avenue between 2nd and 4th shifting to the north. eastbound between third and fourth reduced to two lanes. again, a lot of this work will be happening for the next eight months. probably most of it during daytime hours. some lanes on h street eastbound near 2nd street will have chances. h street westbound shifted towards 3rd street.

have a great weekend. i'm megan fitzgerald live in fairfax county outside of woodson high school where fire investigators are still on the scene trying to figure out what started a fire that injured five students and hurt a teacher as well. six injuries here. we want to pan over here, the school has evacuated. 2400 students were inside the school when the fire happened around 9:40 this morning. they're waiting at the football stadium there now because they have not gotten the all clear go back inside the school. investigators are trying to understand how this fire happened. we want to show you video, earlier at 9:40 when this fire started. our helicopter was flying above. you can see students were walking out. at first we had an opportunity to speak with a student who said at first he thought this was a regular fire drill. that was the sentiment among students. then they saw a helicopter come

and arrive. then word spread that there was two students that were seriously injured and were being flown to the washington medical hospital there and to the burn unit. three other students were rushed to the hospital with injuries that are nonlife threatening. that's when students said they started to get concerned and wonder what was happening. that's when they realized this was a serious incident. two students experienced life threatening injuries and are at burn unit. we had an opportunity to speak with one of those students. we want to play for you what that student had to say. >> we were like maybe there is a fire, something in the kitchen, like a microwave fire. then a medevac chopper came in, picked up one person. then one later picked up another. no one really knows what is going on. >> they had no idea what was

happening until they started to see for themselves the first responders coming in. no word on the condition of those two students who were seriously injured. at this point school has not been canceled, but it is a short day because it's the end of the quarter. students are supposed to leave at 12:45 today, but no word on whether they can go back to the school. this fire is still under investigation. >> on sunday as well as monday there's the chance of light showers, mainly later in the day on sunday. on monday, the chance of showers at any point throughout the day. the school day forecast has to include the chance of showers from bus stop to recess to dismissal. today we will kee an eye on that and update the forecast. new information coming in i'll post updates on my facebook and twitter pages throughout the early afternoon hours. you can catch the latest forecast on news 4 at 4:00. if you're dining out tonight, temperatures in the 50s. dry conditions, jacket weather as you head out for friday

stuck on. >> you should examine your breasts once a week. >> that was dr. walker a week before finding a lump in her own breast. she appeared on news4 midday. her own reaction to finding a lump was like that of most women. >> the first week i ignored it i thought it was nothing. then i kept comparing it to the other side. >> the hardest thing about women coming in is conquering their fear of coming in and what they'll find out. >> there was nothing in my family to suggest that i should have breast cancer. i was healthy, had children. >> as the week went by, it was her family that she was worried about. >> was i going to be alive for my children. the second, i would be able to work? would the treatment be so bad that i couldn't work and support my family? >> she continued her operating schedule but continued to fear what might lie ahead. >> as women, our breasts are very important to us as part of our identity.
