demonstration gone wrong for the fire in w.t. woodson high school in fairfax. two students are in the hospital and both have serious burns and one of them is in critical condition. three other students and a teacher were also injured. we've been sending out alerts on the nbc washington app. we have team coverage now. darcy spencer is at the inova fairfax hospital and we start with meagan fitzgerald live outside. what's the latest in the. >> pat, the fairfax county fire chief this was a teacher-led experiment happening in a first-floor classroom inside a chemistry classroom. he said the teacher was mixing different chemicals with fire to show the different colors of fire when somehow it got out of control. he says this was an accident. chopper 4 was flying above the school as the 2400 students were evacuating. fire officials say when crews arrived on scene five injured students and a teacher were if the hallway. two students with serious burns

were airlifted and three others were rushed to the hospital by ambulance and their teacher was treated on scene. fairfax county fire and rescue chief richard bower says crews worked quickly to extinguish the flames inside the classroom. he spoke with us just moments ago. >> and during that instruction of demonstrating the different types of colors of fire, several students, unfortunately, were burned as well as the teacher. now the chief says about 50% of that classroom was damaged with water, fire and smoke damage. he said that amounts to $7500 and my colleague darcy spencer is standing by at inova fairfax hospital with the latest on these victims. darcy? >> reporter: meagan, this is a frightening thing if you're a parent and seeing students brought out of the high school on stretchers.

that's exactly what played out at woodson high school earlier this morning, as we've been reporting, five students and their teacher were injured this morning when there was some sort of flash fire in that chemistry lab during that demonstration and two students' injuries were so severe and they had to be airlifted and three students were driven to the hospital here in northern virginia and let's get a breakdown of the injuries from fire captain randy bittenger. >> we did have five students that were, unfortunately, injured from this fire. two of them life-threatening and we have three other patients that were nonlife-threatening and were transported by ground over to fairfax hospital. >> reporter: just in the last several minutes we've been able to get updates on the patients' conditions and we are told those flown to fairfax hospital may have undergone surgery earlier

today and the student who was flown to medstar is in fair condition and as we mentioned two students were brought to inova fairfax and the good news is they're expected to be okay and you'll hear from one student who was in the classroom when this happened and he describes what he says started this fire. we'll send it back to you. >> thanks so much, darcy. even though this happened in fairfax, you have to believe that districts all over our area are reviewing their procedures for these classes. stay with news 4, we'll bring them to you on the air and on the nbc news washington app as soon as we get more information. david culver coming to you from the fairfax county circuit court where jurors are wrapping up their second day of deliberations in the trial against charles severance. they're working through the counts to decide whether severance was responsible for the murders of ruthanne lodato and ron kirby and nancy dunning

and the length of time its taken them to reach a verdict is not surprising given the mountain of evidence they have to work through. just ahead on news 4 at 5:00, i'll tell you the request that the jurors made today that indicates how much time they'll need before they reach a verdict. in fairfax, i'm david culver. the coast guard just updated us and says 8,000 gallons of jet fuel spilled in from reagan national airport. you shouldn't notice delays or problems if you're traveling into or out of the airport because of this. the airport's authority doesn't have a time line on how long it will take to clean up the mess, but it does say the spill is now contained. a man accused of killing his wife in arlington will have to stay in jail. david blatty is accused of stabbing his wife in their home. they were finalizing a divorce

and weren't living together when it happened. neighbors saw her two kids wandering around outside and he waived his arraignment and he'll have a preliminary hearing next week. a state trooper is recovering at home when a driver ran into him in the roadway. he made a traffic stop when another driver smashed into the side of his cruiser and the driver kept going and eventually crashed into a guardrail and he got out of the qaa acar and tri run away. he's been charged with dui and reckless driving. the army are removing pieces of the runaway blimp. it was taken moments ago and the main body of the blimp will be airlifted out of the woods tomorrow. all of the pieces of the blimp will be loaded into military vehicles and taken to an unnamed government facility for inspection.

i'm wendy rieger in the newsroom following the latest on the white house policy change in the fight against isis. this afternoon the obama administration confirmed it will be sending nearly 50 troops into northern syria to train, advise and assist opposition forces in their effort to subdue isis militants who are there. this is a shift because previously the administration said there would be no u.s. boots on the ground in this fight, but the white house emphasized this plan, again, only involves a very small

number of special operations forces, less than 50 and while these forces will not take on combat roles the white house does acknowledge it is a dangerous mission. we have seen the violence rip through that country in recent years killing a quarter of a million people and displacing millions of others. pat? chris? >> there is a tremendous amount of relief this weekend along the kentucky-tennessee border. the hunt for a convicted rapist and robber ended in a deadly shootout. >> shots fired! shots fired! officer down! officer down! >> that was the call that went out after floyd cook allegedly opened fire and shot an officer near the border. several days ago the officer survived and police shot and killed cook last night. a helicopter helped close in on him and families in the area had been afraid to send their kids out to trick-or-treat while cook was on the run. right now the ntsb is on the ground at the fort lauderdale

airport trying to figure out how the plane caught fire on the tarmac. they say the engine on the dynamic airlines to venezuela burst into flames right after takeoff and one person was hurt in the fire and today the airline is working to get some passengers to their original destination. people who checked luggage had to continue on without it. it has to stay on the plane until the ntsb wraps up its investigation. a case of bubonic plague. it's happening in oregon, a teenager, doctors believe, has been infected by a flee while she was on a hunting trip spreading the disease. wild animals like squirrels are often carriers. bubonic plague is rare, but this victim is the 16th case this year. 17 cases in 2006. that's the record number for a year in the century. >> it is sentencing day for the man who shot and killed an employee at a local hotel. new this afternoon, news 4 talks to the victim's mother. warnings about bacon causing

right now at 4:30, a local student is in surgery with serious burns after a fire break out in chemistry class.

in total, five students and a teacher have been injured. it happened as a teacher was doing a demonstration at fairfax county at w.t. woodson high school. wendy is in the newsroom, keeping us on top of the developments. >> reporter: chris, we just learned at the top of the hour that the student in surgery at children's hospital remains in critical condition. the other student who was airlifted out has been upgraded to fair condition. fairfax fire chief richard bowers says they were burned when something went wrong during a classroom demonstration and the teacher was showing students how different chemicals can make fire turn different colors. they're not sure what chemical was being used when this fire spread. the recovery for these students could be long because of the nature of these burns. >> as with any burn injury you're never out of the woods because of infection and that's the cautious determination as it relates from serious to critical. >> the three other students and

the teacher who were also injured are expected to be okay and that classroom suffered about $7,000 in damages. pat? >> thanks, wendy. at most schools chemistry class is just part of the curriculum. so what are students mixing up in those classes and what kinds of safety precautions do teachers take and what do they need to take in light of what happened today? dr. david evans is executive director at the national science teachers association. he's here with us. i would imagine in will skoos all over the area schooteachers looking at procedures and schools are looking at what happened. >> it's important that they do so. >> these accidents don't happen that often. >> not an accident as serious as what we've seen today. small accidents happen all of the time and that's part of the problem is how to count them and serious accidents like this are not that common. so we know the teacher was demonstrating the different

colors of the fire to change the color of fire and what do they use in the classes? what kind of safety equipment or materials do they generally -- >> what we encourage, the use of safety goggles and protective aprons and perhaps gloves and hass douse materials like this are being handled and we encourage that all of those experiments would be done under a safety hood separated from the actual participants. >> what kinds of chemicals are we talking about? >> we don't know for sure what this experiment was about and it could be everything from water and salt to things that are flammable to things that might be poisonous or corrosive. a wide range of things are possible. >> i would imagine some of that's changed and how much has changed since you and i took chemistry? >> it's been a long time for me, not necessarily for you. >> me, too. >> the main changes are in our awareness of the safety. the safety procedures have been tightened significantly since i

forces won't be in a combat role, they will be armed and working in a war zone. nbc's edward lawrence reports. u.s. special forces will begin operations on the ground in syria, joining local forces to right isis. this is a reversal of policy who up until now insisted no u.s. troops would go to syria. it would spend 50 special operations forces to syria to offer training advice and assistance. growing isis strength, the syrian civil war and the massive refugee crisis prompted the change. just last week in iraq, u.s. special forces could be seen going through an isis prison with kurdish rebels, rescuing 70 prisoners, but one american was killed. the policy shift means more troops sent to iraq for support and additional warplanes sent to turkey. critics say this won't be enough. >> in my experience it takes more than they're talking about

the american airlines flight was headed from philly to l.a., but was diverted to phoenix. homeland security officers took him into custody and he's undergoing a mental health evaluation. investigators think it may be a while before they know what caused the house to explode overnight in indiana. neighbors say it was loud and damaged some of their homes. the good news is that no one was at home at the time of the explosion and there were no injuries. a chilling surveillance video has just been released showing a bloody shootout between biker clubs and police in waco. this happened at a restaurant in may leaving nine people dead and 18 injured. kxas tv reporter johnny archer has the story. >> reporter: for the first time we're seeing what happened inside the twin peaks restaurant in waco on sunday, may 17th. this first clip we are highlighting shows one man holding up a gun as the tables clear and bikers take cover. before it was over, nine people
