police. right now we have a disabled fire truck on the right side of the roadway. with lanes are blocked. folks trying to squeeze around that. we see the volume inbound near fairfax county parkway. other problems, brandywine at branch avenue, still have a crash being reported there. follow police direction. inner loop and outer loop looking good now. don't have any major problems. and 270, we're now clear southbound at montgomery village avenue, no problems northbound or southbound on 270. >> thanks, melissa. montgomery county police are looking for the driver who hit a pedestrian and took off. we saw more crashes last night as drivers deal with darker visibility. kristin wright is live in bethesda where officials are pleading with drivers to be more careful. good morning. >> good morning. well, recently a bicyclist drove through here along mass avenue and recently as well 95-year-old woman as you may remember was killed trying to cross river road. as mentioned, last night there

was a person who was hit in a hit and run crash on columbia pike at tech road. police are looking for a dark colored car with front end damage. we're not sure how that person is doing, but all of this to say montgomery county council member roger burrline is holding a day of action, where he's trying to move the focus to traffic safety. and so this morning we're out at the library where people have been holding signs this morning to remind drivers about the dangers of speed and distracted driving. the other thing is council member burrline is trying to get the attention of some of the state representatives as well as highway traffic -- members of the state highway administration to call attention to some of the maybe safety improvements that could be made along mass avenue as well as river road. 7:00 this morning near the library, people will be holding the signs and 8:00 near river and springfield road.

back to you guys. >> thank you. a 9-year-old girl is dead and her mother recovering from this crash in prince george's county. girl's mother tried to turn left from woodyard road to canberra drive in clinton. the car she hit flipped over and that driver broke both legs. the mother was not badly hurt. a neighbor told us crashes happen at that intersection about once a month. that was the second major crash in prince george's county last night. a driver had the a pedestrian at kenilworth avenue and riverdale road. one person was seriously hurt. police aren't releasing any more information. but say the end of daylight saving time could be causing more crashes. all bodies of passengers and crew are back in russia now. the last plane arrived early this morning. today officials will work on returning suitcases and personal belongings found to family

members. the jet crashed over the weekend, killing all 224 people on board. russian airline officials saying there was no technical or human error. u.s. intelligence analysts believe an explosion could have happened on board, but as of right now, no evidence what brought that plane down. still, no official cause of the crash that has been reported. 5:04. this morning, a new look at a suspected robber targeting banks in fairfax county. the fbi calls him the forever loyal bandit. the shirt he wears during the robberies. in 2014, the fbi believes the same man robbed three other banks in the county. >> so far he has not displayed any weapons. but there is always that possibility that it will escalate to where somebody gets injured. >> there is a $5,000 reward for

anyone with information leading to this man's arrest and conviction. in decision 2016, a significant shake-up this morning. donald trump is no longer the front-runner in the gop presidential contest. a new news wall street journal poll puts dr. ben carson in the lead. his biggest lead yet. 29% of voters say they choose him. 23% would go for trump. this as trump releases a new book today with what he plans to fix, what he calls a crippled america. stay with us, tracie potts will offer her perspective in a little bit. local elections, we're about an hour out from the polls opening at 6:00 a.m. voting today, you'll help pick some new leaders in our area. in maryland, there aren't any state wide races. a number of cities will elect mayors and council members including gaithersburg and rockville. the same is true for bowie, college park, green belt and

laurel. in virginia, one key race to keep an eye on, for the mayor of alexandria euille is running a write-in campaign after losing to allison silberberg. the democrats need to pick up one seat to take control of the senate. now among senate seats up for grabs, district 29, which includes part of prince william county. coming up, molette green with more on these two candidates looking to influence the legislature. developing this morning, metro still doesn't have someone at the helm to begin fixing the agency millions of you take every day to and from work. neal cohen pulled out of negotiations yesterday. sources say he was not happy about having his name out in the media before even signing his contract. news 4 transportation reporter adam tuss says the board will now go back to the other four candidates and let them know the job is back open.

after many of you spoke up, metro decided to keep the bus that connects the district and the dulles international airport. metro planned to get rid of the bus open. more than 3,000 of you argued that the train takes longer and is more expensive and unreliable. now metro says it will reduce the service between bwi marshall and d.c. different man now considered the front-runner to be the national next manager. cbs reports that dusty baker is now being offered the job. you'll remember last week sources said former san diego padres manager bud black was the first for the open job. usa today reporting though that black and the nats could not agree on a contract. we're keeping an eye on the situation and we'll let you know once an official deal is made. and check the nbc washington app for pictures from the world

5:17. decision 2015, polls open in about 45 minutes for local elections. a big way for keeping an eye on today is in virginia. the entire legislature is on the ballot, and every vote will count to see who takes control of the senate. molette green is live in woodbridge with more on the candidates vying for a seat. >> reporter: democrats need to pick up just one seat to tip the balance in their favor. here in prince william county, they are trying to hold on to a seat vacated by a moderate who

has not endorsed either candidate. but it is an off off year election and turnout could be an issue today in this democratic leaning majority -- minority district. let's look at the candidates now. the democrats, here is jeremy mcpike, a newcomer with a backing from big hitters like hillary clinton, mark warner. the 40-year-old is a volunteer firefighter, commutes every day to alexandria, transportation big on his list of issues to tackle. mcpike is getting a win here is considered critical to mcauliffe's legislative agenda. so the govern wants this guy in office. he made it on the stage, even, at a clinton rally recently in alexandria. the republican here is a formidable opponent. hal parish, well known manassas mayor with a family business in manassas. both come out against the governor's recent proposal to toll the i-66 car pool lanes inside the beltway.

so they have some common ground, but they differ on some really big and tough issues in this state. among them, gun control. that is the latest live here from rosa parks elementary school where the voting gets started at 6:00 a.m. back to you. >> molette green, thank you. developing this morning, the search for answers in a young couple's death. d.c. police found the young man and woman inside a home on tennessee avenue northeast yesterday afternoon. that's in the capitol hill neighborhood. officers went there for a welfare check. we asked them how they died, but they wouldn't tell us. police are calling the deaths suspicious. no arrests, no suspects at this point. a deadly shooting now. this time police opening fire on a carjacking suspect. that shootout happened in southeast washington after a chase in prince george's county that quickly crossed the state line. sources tell news 4 the suspect carjacked someone on riverbend road in ft. washington. police followed him and caught up with him in southeast, when they say he started shooting. officers returned fire and killed the suspect.

5:20 now. today, family, friends and students will gather to remember those who died in a homecoming parade in oklahoma. four people died and 40 others were hurt when a car plowed into a crowd of people at the end of a homecoming parade late last month for oklahoma state university. a community wide memorial service will be held tonight in the city of stillwater. a woman suspected of drunk driving is being charged for the crash. also today, attorneys in the oscar pistorius case will head back to court to appeal against a guilty verdict in a deadly shooting. the south african paralympic gold medalist was found guilty of shooting and killing his girlfriend. during a trial, pistorius claimed he thought his girlfriend was a burglar. his attorneys will argue that the judge ignored important evidence. pistorius is out of prison and on parole less than a year into his five-year sentence, not expected to be in court today. in news 4 your health at 5:21, do you use the calorie counts you see on some menu s?

yes? >> i don't want to look at them. i would rather just eat what's in front of me. >> new studies show the numbers don't necessarily help customers make healthier choices. researchers with new york university say the calorie counts averaged outlmost the same regardless of whether customers could see the total before they ordered. another study in the journal of health affairs says requiring restaurants to reveal calorie changes -- changes what restaurants offer, not necessarily what customers order. and i guess the logic might be that, you know, you know what you're getting, so you are doing it to yourself. >> i try to eat healthily during the week. when i'm eating out, i don't want to look. give me my french fries. i don't want to look at the calorie count. let me be happy. >> food makes me happy. >> food makes us happy. chuck bell telling us about a warmup on the way. pretty picture outside the lincoln memorial.

sae says it only screened -- the only screening they do is to ask for a yale student i.d. when it got too crowded, police showed up and told them not to let anyone else in. one student says she was turned away and told admittance was on a white girls only basis. >> someone at the door said, white girls only. those are the words, white girls only. >> last spring a video of sae brothers at the university of oklahoma went viral as they chanted racial slurs about how black people would never be allowed to join that fraternity. lawmakers in iran will not ban the death for america slogan in that country. lawmakers issued a statement yesterday despite tehran reaching a landmark nuclear deal with the u.s. nearly 200 lawmakers signed the statement. it seems iran's leader and many in the iranian government remain suspicious of the u.s. despite the recent deals. a scandal developing this morning at the vatican. can confidential documents

detailing that mismanagement lost the vatican millions of euros in potential revenue. the findings are part of a new book by an italian journalist due out on thursday. but the associated press obtained a copy early of merchants in the temple. yesterday, the vatican announced the arrests of two people suspected of leaking confidential documents. both suspects are members of the pope's financial reform commission. a survey just out this morning shows encouraging evidence for religious leaders across america. the pew research center says 77% of adults in the u.s. identify with a faith group. the majority of those adults are just as engaged now as they were seven years ago. for example, two-thirds of religiously affiliated adults said they prayed every day. the survey also found nearly every major religion was notably more accepting of same sex relationships. it is now 5:27. happening today, first lady michelle obama spending her first full day in qatar.

50 between 29 and germantown road. more details and be back here in a minute. 66 eastbound at fairfax county parkway, again, very slow here headed inbound this morning because of this disabled fire truck off to the right side of the roadway. big look at the beltway, beltway fairly clear. travel times in ten minutes. 5:32 now. to decision 2016. a new nbc news wall street journal poll, tracie potts is on capitol hill with some surprises and some shifts in the new numbers. >> the biggest surprise in this, or the biggest news out of this, aaron, is a 29% support for dr. ben carson. it is the largest percentage that we have seen in our poll this election cycle. he's surging to number one. six points ahead of donald trump. when you put together people who say he's their number one or number with choice, he's way out there at 50%. also, the most popular democrat or republican in this poll, trump is the most unpopular now. carson leading the charge to try

to reform the next debate. he's got most but not all of the other candidates signed on. john kasich, chris christie, carly fiorina say they won't sign on. trump is actually negotiating with the networks himself. but it is a big poll for carson. also we're finding people frustrated with what is going on in washington. that's happened before. more than a quarter say the country's not headed in the right direction. more than half say they feel the deck is stacked against them. and well over half say they have the chance to either keep or fire their member of congress, bet you can guess that one. they want to get rid of them. >> tracie potts on the little for us, thank you. a different trend among the democratic candidates. hillary clinton is growing her lead now. she has more than doubled the support of her closest rival, vermont senator bernie sanders. breakdown for you, clinton 66%, sanders, 31%. former maryland governor martin o'malley at 3% now. >> we want to thank you from the

bottom of our hearts. >> we long ago lost hope that justice would ever come. >> now that the defendant is found guilty, we can finally start to mourn. the attorneys for the convicted serial killer charles severance are expected to appeal against a guilty verdict. for now, it is closure for three families who say they have been waiting for more than a decade for justice. a jury convicted severance yesterday in the murders of ruth ann lodato, ron kirby and nancy dunning. they recommended three life sentences. in court, kirby's widow recalled the last time she spoke to him, saying, the last thing he said to me was to call me when you get lost, and i am truly lost without him. the verdict also brings a sense of closure to an entire community. >> said 11 years ago, there is no cold case with a homicide of this nature. unfortunately other victims got in the way of this particular person who committed these crimes. today, hopefully, that push will never harm anyone in any community again.

>> severance is expected to be sentenced in january. we're working to learn the names of a -- the name of a 22-year-old man found dead near a popular shopping center in gaithersburg. police say the body was discovered in a wooded area. news 4 was there as investigators processed that scene along contour road in montgomery village plaza yesterday. right now police are not saying whether they think the man was killed. surveillance video helped police catch a man accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy in arlington. 31-year-old ahmed l. katib is accused of touching the boy while he was sleeping in a common room. the boy says he woke up with his pants down. he ran away and told his cuzzen who wo-- cousin who works in th building. a man died trying to cross a street late sunday night. we brought you the story yesterday morning. since then we followed up with people who live in that area,

they say they complained about the dangerous crossing before. >> if you go down too far, you know, you're taking a chance to walk across the street. it is a busy road. >> there is a light and cross walk yards away from the scene of this weekend's accident near edison high school. tom khan died in sunday's cras they have not found the white or light colored van that hit him. baltimore prosecutors don't want jurors sequestered in the trial of one of the six officers charged in the death of freddie gray. william porter's trial is set to begin later this month. his defense attorneys want jurors placed in hotels. no access to phones, tv and facebook. prosecutors say those requirements could make it hard to seat a jury. gray died in april after suffering a severe spinal cord injury in police custody. all but one of the five students hurt in a high school chemistry class fire are now out of the hospital. the student from woodson high school who is still in the hospital is under going surgery for serious burns.

at scary reason to check your kid's halloween candy. police in southeast maryland say a sewing needle was found lodged inside a twizzler. the 15-year-old told his parents he called police. the teenager was not hurt and said he got the candy trick-or-treating in the salisbury area. the package showed no signs of tampering. 66 inbound fairfax county parkway, we just pushed this out on the nbc washington app. we have been tweeting about it.
