office is trying to figure out what started a house fire behind me. fortunately no one was inside at the time. the house is being renovated right now. the owner had hoped to get back into the house with his family for thanksgiving. chopper 4 was overhead this morning. it got these pictures of flames shooting through the roof of the house on horseshoe lane. when officials got here, the fire was really going and had taken over the home. it has not been lived in for months. at daylight the owner could see the extensive damage. he was hoping to have the renovations done and get back into the house next month. there was a partial collapse at one point this morning. firefighters were just fine. the damage to the home is significant. one of our news choppers was flying overhead, as i mentioned, and had to make an emergency landing. coming up on new 4 at 11:30,

we'll talk to a photojournalist who was on board about what happened. back to you. the washington nationals have named a new manager. i'm angie goss. dusty baker has been named to the job. baker spent 20 years as an mlb manager, six years as a coach, another 20 as a player before that. they agreed on a multi-year contract making baker the sixth manager in the team's history. baker is also a prostate cancer survivor who served in the marines. back to you. we are working to learn more about a carjacking suspect right now. prince george's police shot and killed him after a chase last night. the suspect took someone's camry on riverbend road in ft. washington. police chased as he crossed int southeast washington. when he fired at them they shot back and killed him.

and right now polls are open across virginia. you have a say in a lot of important elections. including a fight over control of the state senate. we're live in woodbridge. molette green has more on the campaigns and how it's going out there at the polls today. we'll have that in about ten minutes. to the race for the white house. ben carson is pulling further ahead of the competition, that according to the new nbc news "wall street journal" poll. carson has a full six-point lead. 29% of voters said they would choose him. 23% for donald trump this as trump releases a new book today to map out his plans to fix what he calls a crippled america. jeb bush was at the bottom with 8% of voters. hillary clinton is expanding her lead among democratic candidates. the poll gives her 62% of the vote. compare that to 31% for senator bernie sanders, 3% for former

federal investigators are now looking into that fire inside a chemistry classroom at a fairfax county my school. one woodson high school student remains in the hospital and is undergoing surgery for burns. in all five students were injured on friday. since then the superintendent has banned the use of open flames in all classrooms. the u.s. chemical safety board is looking into the fire. it has not yet sent investigators to woodson high school but it considering launching an official investigation into that fire and explosion. we're also trying to learn more about how a young couple dies. d.c. police found the man and woman dead inside a home on

tennessee avenue near c street. that's in the capitol hill neighborhood. officers are calling their deaths suspicious but not murderers at this point. police visit visited the home for a welfare check. a traffic alert to watch out for if you're driving near the national mall. 17th street from constitution avenue to independence southwest is shut down. 17th street is expected to open up around 3:30 this afternoon. these are pictures of the work there. the levee is designed to protect the district from flooding. not once but twice, why one carmaker is in hot water again for the second time in just a couple of weeks.

anchorage, alaska was on the side of the road covering that pile up when that crash happened. icy roads caused more than 80 crashes in anchorage yesterday. right now, a hearing about your safety when you fly. the tsa is under fire for security practices a federal report found the agency missed 96% of bombs, weapons and other security threats earlier this year. virginia congressman jerry connelly here asked the tsa administrator how he's responding to that and other security concerns. >> we put a tremendous amount of effort into not just determining the instant failures but reaching back through the organization to figure out what systemically was going on that brought this to this. >> the administrator said the breaches stem from a culture problem that is agency wide. we'll keep watching this. back to you. metro's search for its next general manager continues today.

neil cohen pulled out of negotiations yesterday. he said he was not happy about having his name out in the media before signing his contract. the board will now go back to the other four candidates and let them know the job is back open. we have some new information at this hour on a hit-and-run accident in montgomery county. a 17-year-old boy was hit at route 29 and tech road in silver spring just before 10:30 last night. he remains in serious condition. police need your help finding the striking vehicle and the driver of that vehicle. this is what officers know about the vehicle. it's a dark gray honda suv, possiy a dark gray honda pilot. and it is missing the passenger side mirror and may have front end damage as well. that pedestrian crash along with several others is why officials in montgomery county are calling for action. community members want drivers

we have a developing story. no decision was made today by judges in the oscar pistorius appeal. prosecutors want him charged with murder. the south african paraolympic gold medalist was found guilty of manslaughter of his girlfriend, rieev reeva steenka. during the trial, pistorius said he thought his girlfriend was a burglar. in maryland, fire investigators are working to figure out what sparked a huge house fire this morning. that was chopper 4 overhead. kristin wright raced to the soon as soon as she found out about it. she is live with the latest. >> yes, a big, big fire here today.

now the question is how did it start? >> reporter: the sky was red. chopper 4 captured these pictures of flames shooting from the house on horseshoe lane. firefighters think it was burning for some time before the 911 call came in. when they got here, the fire was raging. but no one was inside. the house is being renovated. it has been unoccupied for months. at daylight the owner could see the extensive damage. he was hoping to have the renovations done and get his family back into their home for thanksgiving. as if the fire weren't enough, our news chopper out covering the house fire had to make an emergency landing in the neighborhood. montgomery county fire rescue saw smoke coming from the chopper. >> my pilots are well trained. they are extremely safe and knowledgeable about the aircraft and its capabilities. steve miller got us on the ground safely. >> back at the house, the fire marshal's office is trying to figure out what started the

fire. at one point part of the home did collapse. fortunately firefighters are just fine. barbara, back to you. >> thank you. investigators now preparing to examine those black boxes from the tragic plane crash in egypt. a joint committee says it will start looking at the black boxes once the crash site investigation ends and that's supposed to happen today. investigators say the metro jet flight broke apart in midair this past weekend killing all 244 on board. what caused the crash is still a mystery. this morning an american defense official said a satellite det t detected a heat flash when the plane went down but a missile is not to blame. supporters of the keystone pipeline say the company is suspending its permanent application in order to delay the review process until a new president is elected. president obama was widely expected to veto this plan. the state department could accept the transcanada request

or move forward with its final decision. a prince george's county family is dealing with the loss of their 9-year-old girl while her mother recovers from this crash. the girl was killed just before 11:30 last night at woodyard road in clinton. the driver of the other car broke both of her legs. a neighbor says crashes happen at that intersection about once a month. we are all dry here. we have rain way down in the carolinas. that will stay well to our south. then a chance maybe tomorrow, but we'll stay dry today. a gorgeous day. the metro forecast for the the afternoon should be making it into the upper 60s to maybe near 70. then on wednesday, the mid 70s still mild, more clouds around. maybe a few scattered sprinkles on thursday. that's our next chance of rain. that looks to be on thursday. a bit cooler, too. temperatures hovering in the upper 60s.

using some kind of electronic device. for kids between the ages of 8 and 12, it's six hours a day. >> kids spend more time with technology than they did with their parents, time in school or any other thing. >> reporter: the non-profit commonsense media surveyed more than 2500 teens and tweens across the nation. more than half multi-task, watching tv, texting or using social media while doing homework. experts say parents can help manage kids technology use by loing at their own. >> if you're constantly glued to your cell phone or computer, you're not setting a good example for your kid. >> reporter: the trick is to help kids learn how to use media without losing the ability to connect face-to-face with others. kids like ben prove it can be done. >> they seem to think it takes away from having social skills. i don't think that's the case at all. i can write a complete sentence, carry out a conversation just like anybody else can.
