now. i'll show you how long you'll need that umbrella. >> calls to boycott a children's magazine for its profile of a local family. >> i cried and said how could there be so much hate? >> the parents said those criticritic critics are not going to win. first tonight, staggering new evidence of the impact synthetic drugs are having on our city. >> the impact they could have on you even if you never touched them. tonight, the news4 i-team takes you behind the scene to see how synthetics are putting more pressure than ever on an already strained fire and ems system. >> reporter: washington d.c. is a big city with big city problems. in less than one hour, a car crash and fire and yet another stabbing all in northeast. the captain spends his days literally running from one emergency to another. he and his team say they've never seen anything like a toll

on their ems system like synthetic drugs. >> i'm a 25 year veteran of this department. it's scariee ieier than anythine seen. >> a record number of emergency calls for synthetic overdoses in september. d.c. is averaging 20 run as day with as many as 34 on particu r particularly bad days. to put that in perspective the city averages less than two heroin overdoses per day. >> we began seeing some distu disturbing clusters of mass overdoses which are fairly unusual. >> reporter: the chief says it started this summer near the federal homeless center when calls came with nearly a dozen people collapsing. >> they're sprowd out in a two block raidias and not presenting at the same time and two to three hours after the initial 911 dispatch. >> reporter: he said these cl t clusters continued through the summer and realized they were sending multiple crews to the

same location for the same problem. >> how we adapted evolved. our operational response. the crews are trained to be alert to a pattern of overdoses and send a battalion chief and ems supervisor and establish incident command and treat it as a slow motion mass casualty event. >> reporter: in other words, they are responding to synthetic overdoses the same way they react to a mass shooting. captain st. lawyerence is one o those who respond. >> how long ago you smoked? >> reporter: he's on k 2, he suspects. >> you are too old to be doing a super drug like k-2. >> reporter: they take him to the hospital where he will probably stay two days as the drug works its way out of the system. >> we have had two calls, emergency assistance call where they're being assaulted by the

patients. >> reporter: as a result they send more crew further straining an already stressed out system that had a 40% increase in ems transports in just seven years. >> this is a significant operational impact. because it's also using a lot of resources it impacts the availability of ems resources for other life-threatening and time sensitive emergencies as well. >> reporter: like this stabbing call that comes in moments after the overdose. >> 48-year-old man -- >> reporter: it will become a murder scene later. a brutal reminder what the stakes are each time they gets called way for another synthetic overdose. they made a 611 responses for synthetic overdoses in september alone. that is 10 times more runs than they made for heart attacks or strokes and even higher than the car accidents they responded to in the city. tisha thompson, news4 i-team.

open tonight after this accident involving a greyhound bus in downtown d.c. the bus was making a turn off mass avenue off mt. vernon square where it hit a man and the driver didn't realize anything was wrong. witnesses pounded on the bus and a doctor stayed with him until the ambulance got there and he is in critical condition. a fire tore through this home in stg cou. george's count today. choppers are over the scene and crews are working to see what started this fire. new at 11:00 tonight, we could seen learn if former d.c. mayor vincent gray face charges with that shadow campaign that helped him get elected in 2010. channing phillips said he hopes

and die. >> in case of an od situation you can save that person's life. that's what the bill does. >> while it is aimed at veterans and members of the military, it could provide funding for states to obtain it and how to administer it. if you drive in virginia you know route 7 can be a headache. last week we told you crews were wrapping up and tonight you and your neighbor got to hear about the future from the same -- for the same road from alexandria to tys tysons. they shared its vision. planners are considering either a light rail or bus line to help connect the two areas. another public hearing next week. tolls on virginia express y expressways are costing people thousands of dollars. today, the judge allowed them to go forward with a class action
