pronounced dead on the scene. luther glen virginia which is 20 miles south of here. state police is still investigating this crash and we do know there was a lot of fog in the region and all across the region earlier this morning. grief counselors have been on hand here at the school and we understand that a candlelight vigil is planned for later tonight. the student body can remember and mourn this terrible loss. again, two brothers killed on the way here to this school in spotsylvania and that crash remains under investigation. we are live, derrick ward, news 4. i'm jackie bensen in prince george's county. a catastrophic accident here on new hampshire avenue just north of the d.c. line. a short time ago, take a look behind me. you can see one of the cars, that black mustang involvedd2 this accident that has left four

young children and four adults injured. you can see we're on the downslope of the hill here on new hampshire avenue and we'll show you over to the left where the prince george's county officers are. that is the second vehicle involved in this collision. the white camaro where it is not clear at this time which car the children were riding in. we understand in one vehicle there were four children and two adults. the other vehicle, two adults, but i can tell you that this section of new hampshire avenue is a downhill slope and people are able to pick up speed here. although it is not clear at this point if any type of excessive speed was involved in this accident. now we'll take a look over here and you can see people lined up, waiting to go north on new hampshire avenue coming out of the district, a very, very difficult commute for those people, but again, this is a collision that involved very, very serious injuries and crash

scene investigators are going to keep this road closed as long as they need to so they can investigate this crash. live in prince george's county, jackie bensen, news 4. it is the case of apparent road rage. two cars barreled into a motel on a busy road and it shows the dangerous consequences when things get too heated too quickly. news 4's meagan fitzgerald is live in fairfax count we more on this. meagan? >> reporter: yes. it all started on richmond highway in alexandria at around 11:00 this morning. it ended with one of two drivers colliding into a hotel room wall. >> reporter: gerald bensen says he was headed to work near duke street in alexandria when he noticed a toyota corolla driving beside him. >> and he drove for a very long time and at the last second decided he was going to cut over and not realizing i was right there. >> bensen didn't let him over

and that's when the driver, 50-year-old elmer king started chasing him. roger enriquez with fairfax county police says king hit a lexus near the intersection of fort hunt road before catching up to denten's dodge. >> they both accelerated to a fairly high rate of speed and they both continued, went off the roadway and went into the driveway here to the property of the hotel. >> bensen ends up taking out a pole, crashing into a parked car which goes through a motel room. enriquez says king's vehicle continued until his corolla crashes near the entrance of the motel. >> king has several minor traffic offenses on his record. today police charged him with aggressive driving. coming up at 6:00, hear from the 90-year-old owner of this motel who says because of this damage he might be forced to shut down. back to you. >> meagan, thank you. >> an unusual police pursuit took an even more bizarre turn in one neighborhood along the

fairfax county parkway. a cruiser crashed as it followed the toyota that refused to stop. five people in that toyota bailed out and took off running. officers eventually tracked down the man they believed to be the driver near braddock road here, but the passengers are still out there tonight after the actions of a guy who thought he was being a good samaritan. our pat collins will explain in ten minutes. we want to get to a case now that stunned loudoun county. a child shot in the back while waiting for the school bus. now we're hearing police found the gun in a freezer. northern virginia bureau chief, julie came out to update us. julie? >> reporter: the judge is still hearing testimony at this hour before deciding whether charges against two young men involved in the case should move forward. they're accused of helping the 17-year-old who is accused of the shooting both hide the weapon and get rid of the evidence. the victim in this case, 17-year-old danny santana

miranda. he was shot to death on september 4th as he walked to his school bus stop. he was a sophomore at park view high school and had recently come to this country from el salvador. the juvenile accused of firing the fatal shots is known as the mexican. the detectives says the 17-year-old was in the ms-13 gang and that he told friends he slot santana miranda because he believed he was in the rival 18th street gang. after the gun fire, the alleged shooter ran to this townhouse just a few blocks away from the shooting scene. that's where the two men who are the subject of today's hearing live. detectives say during the interrogation, zelaya admitted he threw away the shell casings and vasquez used his cell phone to call gang leaders in el salvador to tell them about the shooting. another detective took the witness stand to explain where

they found that gun later that evening when they executed the search warrant. it was in the freezer of the townhouse. when i join you all new at 6:00, i'll tell you why a u.s. senator is now getting involved in this very local murder investigation. back to you now, wendy. >> all right. julie carey. that man who was pinned under the greyhound bus for 20 minutes yesterday is in serious, but stable condition today. the bus hit the man near mount vernon square in the downtown area. the driver didn't realize what he'd done until witnesses banged on the door and a doctor who happened to be walking by helped the man and we caught up with that doctor and we'll hear from him in the next couple of minutes here on news 4 at 5:00. this evening investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire outside a montgomery county nail salon. it broke out on grand view avenue near the westfield wheaton mall. fire crews quickly put out the flames that had spread to the ceiling and nearby businesses

were also damaged, but everyone got out safely. some early relief from metro riders on the orange and silver line. trains will once again stop at stadium armory and a fire did serious damage forcing metro to only allow blue line trains to stop, and metro originally thought it would be next year before normal service could resume, but thanks to upgrades and nearby potomac avenue that service will resume well ahead of time. news 4 transportation reporter broke the news that metro finally has a new general manager. metro's board unanimously chose paul wiedefeld and he was with bwi airport and adam has been on the story from the get go and joins us live with early reaction from metro headquarters. adam? >> reporter: that's right, jim. let's all say it together. wiedefeld. that's how you say it.

he's got a lot of work to do and finally, we can close the chapter on all of this, a deal is done. finally, finally an announcement. >> i am really pleased to be able to say that the board of directors has concluded a search and is into the negotiations for metro's next general manager. >> reporter: and that next general manager will be paul wiedefeld, aviation background, transit background. he's dealt with huge construction projects like expanding bwi marshall airport to the major player it is today, seeing record numbers of passengers. >> so he covers, i believe, all of the requirements that they're looking for. >> reporter: from outside of metro, also early and positive reaction, jim denneger is with the board of trade. >> he's as decisive a person i've met and what metro needs. >> reporter: listen to what the metro board chair wants to see from wiedefeld. >> i'm not expecting a day one

i'm pat collins in fairfax where a traffic stop ends ugly. people on the run on pope's head road. a massive police search, a wrecked police car. a suspect arrest, and a strange encounter at this gas station. >> it's unusual. i'm seeing things i don't normally see. >> the focus, this man. police say he's 20 years old and that he's from woodbridge, caught this morning after a major man hunt near pope's head road. it went on for hours. cops, guns, dogs, the works. police say it began when they

tried to stop the suspect for speeding, but they say he bailed out of his car ask rnd ran into neighborhood. eventually they tracked him down behind jim's home. >> they had dogs out sniffing and they flushed him out and he ran across the yard and then they disappeared behind the house and then they led him out in cuffs. it's not something that happens every day, i'll say that. >> reporter: a police officer on his way to the scene wrecked his car. he is expected to be okay which is good news when you take a close look at his car. >> police say that suspect wasn't in the car alone. there were four other people with him. they ran, too, but in a different direction. they went to the house of a good samaritan, knocked on the door and said they were out of gas, asked for a ride to a gas station and and a good samaritan took them to an exxon station

and they got out of the car and they didn't buy gas and he got suspicious and he started asking them questions and -- boom, they ran like the wind. now police say the suspect has a revoked license and he's been charged with speeding and reckless driving and this investigation is far from over and i'll be back at 6:00 with more. people wearing the infamous anonymous masks are expected to flood the streets in more than 670 cities all over the world tonight. it's the anti-establishment million mask march. some protesters showed up near the u.s. capitol this afternoon. protesters were called to assemble at state capitols and city halls to protest corruption, government and society. the main event is taking place in london where they expect more than 18,000 people. donald trump is responding to the protest of his upcoming appearance on "saturday night live." last night demonstrators

gathered outside nbc headquarters where donald trump is scheduled to host snl this weekend. he got half a million signatures calling on the network to boot trump after his comments about mexican immigrants. talking to "today" show, trump says it's about business, not politics. >> there's no problem whatsoever with nbc. now, the reason they put me there is one very simple reason. it's called ratings. if i didn't get ratings they wouldn't put me there. >> they canceled his show "the apprentice" over those comments on immigrants and the network declined to comment on the petition or the protest. a new tobacco bill now said to be signed officially into law by the end of the month. under the new law any business illegally selling tobacco to kids gets hit with a $1,000 fine in montgomery county. that's double the current fine and three times higher than the fines elsewhere in maryland. it comes because of a news 4

i-team investigation which shows a series of unlawful sales of tobacco to kids throughout the county and elsewhere in maryland and our undercover cameras showed you what was happening and there was a second concern, and they had to also set aside money to send out inspectors to enforce the new law. >> understanding that the fines that we recoup can actually help to pay for these positions and that's what we want to do is overall eliminate these kinds of things from happening and so that we're not selling to minors, but we're not having vendors participating in illegal activities and that could be happening through active enforcement. >> health officials did express concern and they don't have enough money to have the inspections they're required to do in montgomery county and our i-team investigations found these statewide in maryland has been increasing over the past three years. in rockville, scott macfarlane,

news 4 i-team. it's one of the most important and contentious issues for any community and school redistricting is on the agenda. a new middle school opening next year in the clarksburg, damascus area. that area has seen explosive population growth in recent years. the board will also look at overcrowding in gaithersburg and the silver spring area schools. it's all part of the capital improvement program, the first chance for parents to weigh in will be monday. well, it was doomed. a new look at nasa's rocket explosion off of virginia coast and finally weight loss could really be as simple as swallowing a pill. but first, some pretty staggeri staggering new numbers from facebook that shows you're definitely not alone and if you noticed more and more videos popping up in the time line. its site now averages about 8 billion, yes, billion with a "b" videos per day. i'm often posting videos on my

it has been a year since a rocket blew up six seconds after launching. >> today we're seeing incredible new pictures was explosion.

nasa posted the pictures and take a look at how the fireball lit up the sky. no one was injured, but this cost $13 million in damage. the launch could not be used for months, but it is back up and running today. now your storm team 4 forecast. >> oh, and that forecast today includes very warm temperatures, not just today, but tomorrow as well and even record-breaking numbers. look at the high temperatures today. 70 degrees in d.c., but 80 degrees towards warrenton and look at the numbers across the region and incredibly warm and high temperature in warrenton and martinsburg, only 63 in annapolis. the reason all sunshine back to the west, and a lot of clouds and we saw the fog early in the east including in towards d.c. right now the clouds are out of here and 68 degrees and winds out of the south at 7 miles per hour and still very mild. no rain to talk about. storm team 4 radar is clear and you can see the clearing and

clear skies from d.c. and a few showers toward ocean city and the wider view, though, picks up on this front back to the west and we have a very strong frontal boundary moving our way and tornado warnings into portions of oklahoma and that system is moving our way and out ahead of it we'll get very warm and behind it we'll be very cool and it will be perfect, mid-september warmth, a touch humid and rather windy, but that wind will allow temperatures to get to the mid and upper 70s. i want to say hello to the kids at candlewood elementary. i was there talking to the kindergartners and they were excited about the warmer weather and even more excited about the potential for snow. we'll talk about that in my winter forecast coming up on monday here on news 4 at 5:00. now tomorrow dress warm for the weather. you want to dress for warm weather, rather, because it will be extremely warm. 1:00 in the afternoon and already 77 and up to a high of 79 tomorrow. as you step out the front door just know it will be a warm day.

we'll start off like we did this morning with fog and we'll see to the east of the blue blue ridge and d.c. and montgomery county and could be the areas of the densest fog so to speak. when that moves out, we get sunshine during the afternoon and the front moves through in 7:00 and 8:00. not much, but we could see showers just about the time that you're heading out for dinner and i want you to remember that, and a better chance for rain overnight friday night. if you're going out late night friday, you might run into rain and another chance for shower activity and that's something that we'll be watching as we make our way in. think about doing some leaf raking the next couple of days? the best day i think will be sunday. saturday it will be breezy and maybe some showers and you don't want to be raking the leaves when the breeze is coming and you want to do it on sunday when it looks good for that and a very nice day and it will be cool on sunday and 58 with sunshine and 58 degrees on monday, as well. >> coming up at 5:45, veronica

it was an awful accident in downtown d.c. a charter bus runs over a man, pinning him under its wheels. a local doctor happened to be walking by and was heading to her office. she quickly dove under the bus to assist the man. news 4's tom sherwood talked with that doctor today. >> screaming there's someone under the bus. so i dove under the bus. >> reporter: moments after the bus pinned a pedestrian underneath, people were frantic. dr. colleen callahan knew immediately what she'd do. >> i had a backpack on, and i threw the backpack off, and i slid under the bus and it was very clear that his left leg was pinned under the two-wheel

system. >> the doctor who lives in arlington and lives nearby was there first before first responders. >> what was your thought process? >> i thought if it was someone i may be able to extract and he may need immediate medical care before 911 arrived. >> as first responders arrived there were more tense moments. >> i was giving a report to the police and to the fire fighters and to the paramedics as they arrived. >> you weren't there for a couple of moments. >> no. i was under there for a little bit. >> do you know for how long? >> i don't know. i was under there until they got the appropriate bus jack to get the bus up. >> she works with the association of american medical colleges on health care issues and crises worldwide. she praised the work of the first responders. >> the emergency response were amazing. i think they are spectacular human beings and this is what they do every day. i don't think the story is about me, it's about them. >> in the district, tom

sherwood, news 4. >> a 17 boy is also charged in connection to a sexual assault in virginia. a woman became incapacitated while she was visiting a group of men whom she knew. it happened in a home in hay market. the woman woke up and went to a hospital and told them she had been attacked. a popular restaurant in port washington will lose its special entertainment permit, but keep its liquor license after a deadly shooting. prince george's county board of license commission called a hearing today after someone shot and killed a woman outside the proud mary. a man was also seriously injured when police say a fight broke out in the proud mary parking lot last month. the restaurant will likely go before the commission early next month. the fight over tolls on the dulles greenway is heading to the virginia supreme court. the loudoun county board of supervisors voted last night to appeal a decision by the state corporation commission. in september, the commission

quarterback rg3. scientists discovered a harmful bacteria in the snakehead fish around our region. they say it's dangerous to several animals and there's no concern for people who eat them once they've been being cooked. snakeheads have the virginia waters off the potomac south of washington. the fish can breathe air and survive on land. the u.s. geological survey can blame new research on its impact and effects. sex, stds, drinking, not a lesson in health class. the mother of an eighth grader is not happy. >> this is vulgarity.

the flu is now in maryland. we knew it was coming. health officials confirmed to us that the state's first influenza case this season happened around baltimore. the person is an adult in that baltimore area. every year health officials decide which strains to include in the flu vaccine. now the patient was sickened by a strain that was included in this year's vaccine which means the patient has a better chance to recover. the state's health department is urging all of you to get vaccinated. >> an experimental non-invasive weight loss treatment is offering high hopes for those of you struggling with obesity and it comes in the form of a pill. once it's swallowed, the physician fills the balloon with

nearly half a liter of liquid, helping the patient to feel full sooner. after remaining in the stomach for four months the balloon then naturally sdofrls a s adissolve through the body. a small group showed a total loss of about 22 pounds. the device is not fda approved just idea, but it is a positive step towards treating obesity. the most common side effects from the device were nausea and vomiting and the cost could range between 6,000 and $12,000. >> fast food, junk food and soda, public enemies one, two and three when it comes to the weight problem. these are a few of my favorites from when i had a metabolism. a new study out today suggests it may only play a limited role. researchers at cornell compared overweight people with people with healthy bmis and found many in both groups ate junk food, this suggesting america's health

crisis could be more complicated than scarfing down chips and guzzling soda. george washington university is home to a brand new center that hopes to bring both kidney disease awareness and transplant services. earlier today the grand opening also brought people together for a special reunion. and news 4's pat lawson muse is here with details for us, pat? >> earlier this year gw performed their first paired kidney exchange and today the donor and recipient got to meet for the very first time. it allowed patients to receive a kidney and it allowed loved ones who weren't a match to still donate and helped save another life. we are told 12 people die every day waiting for a donor. here in our area the number of actual transplants has decreased but the cases of end-stage renal disease and that's when the kidney stopped working enough with dialysis. along the rise, carol miller said she would have had to go

back on dialysis without her transplant. >> it's pretty special. my donor at the time was only 29 years old, and i really can't believe that somebody 29 years old would give me this gift. i'm 51. it's pretty darn special for someone that age to give of themselves that way. >> the new center opened thanks to a $2.5 million donation for a foundation by the chairman of eagle bank who himself is a two-time kidney recipient. he's hoping to encourage people to monitor themselves and also understand what a difference a transplant with make. >> thank you, pat. well, do you go through the drive-through and do you take it for granted? >> one coffee lover found a new way to communicate with her favorite barista without using her voice. why the husband of a woman who disappeared here in laurel saturday night says time is crucial in the search to find her. the story ahead. record warmth and then a change of seasons in just a few

search. >> this is the missing persons flyer that's being passed out in this commercial area along 197 leading to the b.w. parkway. that's the last place that lisa weiss was seen. the car she was driving a parentsly r aparent ran out of gas and they've posted her picture between the pumps. >> u.s. police officers search the area between the baltimore washington parkway near 197. they're looking for a critically missing person. 46-year-old lisa renee weiss of district heights maryland. she was last seen october 31st just after 7:00 p.m. her car was stopped on the shoulder of the bw parkway with its flashers on. the next day the car was still there, but mrs. wyche was gone. >> they've been out with helicopter patrols and a search on the ground with both k-9s and

k-9s from local jurisdictions that have been assisting us. >> his family is increasingly concerned with each passing day because his wife doesn't have her medication and may be disoriented. >> two years ago she had kidney failure, and so she's on dialysis three times a week, monday, wednesday, friday. so she missed monday and wednesday so this is a crucial time right now. >> police are focusing the search for mrs. wyche on this area after they got a call from someone seeing a woman fitting her description in the median of the parkway sunday evening about 5:00. >> they've kind of expanded a little bit as far as what they're going to be looking for today and just continuing to keep hope alive that we will find her and hopefully she's safe. >> reporter: ahead, what makes this missing persons case so unique, lisa wyche apparently

could be a stray shou are, nothing too heavy as temperatures are in the 60s. as the rain moves into the area for early saturday morning there will be moderate rain around and the rain will be ending south of d.c. down i-95 and for the afternoon hours and it should be rather light. in terms of impacts on area roads, i think we're more cautionary with moderate conditions in the early part of the day on saturday and for midday and afternoon on saturday, we've got the green light, and i really want to let you know that saturday afternoon will not be bad everywhere. we have low impact here and fredericksburg, waldorf with the chance of rain and that's the area down to the south that we're worried about the most. check out the forecast and the hourly forecast for saturday. temperatures fall throughout the day on saturday. we start out at 61 degrees. we fall to the mid-50s late and it's going to be cool. meanwhile on sunday, get the jackets back out and temperatures only in the upper 50s so you'll need the fleece. you'll need the pullovers and everything right into next week.
