>> this afternoon two detectives, a police officer and a friend of the shooting victim who have lived here on occasion entered the house. they left in less than 15 minutes. >> no statement. >> the shooting happened here just before 7:00 last night. montgomery county police responding to an emergency call from a man inside the home. >> they found a 47-year-old man who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the body. >> he's been identified by neighbors as joshua bart, a massage therapist who worked out of his house. >> police say bart may be the best witness they have. >> he was able to tell investigators and he answered the door to his residence and he was confronted by two male subjects at the door. a confrontation ensued and one of the subjects shot him, and both subjects then fled the

area. >> reporter: joshua bart is in very serious condition after undergoing surgery. his 7-year-old son was home at the time of the shooting. neighbors worry for the youngster whose mother died last year unexpectedly. one called montgomery animal control to come get the family's elderly dog and a couple of cats, but he had no key and left. neighbors are reacting to the news of the shooting here. >> a little worried. scared. yeah, i was just talking to my daughter and she tells me don't answer the door at night. my door bell rings and i go see who it is. >> reporter: the two suspects in this shooting remain at large tonight. ahead on news 4 at 6:00 and do police think this was a random shooting in is this neighborhood in danger? the answer is coming up at 6:00. that's the latest live from silver spring. chris gordon, news 4. >> i'm chris lawrence at the live desk and the group that led

them on a pursuit along the fairfax county parkway had likely been breaking into cars the night before. they identified one man arrested as keshawn pearson. we are seeing four images of the four people they think got away and they conned a good samaritan into giving them a ride from a nearby gas station. they so far have not arrested anyone. pearson was driving that car on a revoked license. jim? >> thank you, chris. tonight's metro's reviewing a new lawsuit from a man shot inside a d.c. metro bus this summer. earl coates says he was hit by flying bullets in southeast back in august and he claims the transit agency was negligent because someone pressed the emergency switch shutting the whole bus down. he says those switches should be locked and metro officials are looking into securing the cutoff switches. >> the husband of the woman who has been missing halloween night

is turning to prayer after park police suspended their search for her this afternoon. a search team checked an area below bw parkway along route 97. no one has seen lisa wyche since saturday. wyche had car trouble, but she told a park police officer who stopped to help her that she had arrangements to get home. her husband tells us she has missed dialysis three times this week. he believes park police did everything they could do. i'm julie carey in the huntington section of fairfax county where i've learned there is a widening investigation tonight into a debit card skimming operation. police say it was run by two young men who live in that high-rise apartment building, but right now they're behind bars in a richmond suburb and the items that police seized from that apartment, it's become key evidence in the case.

police say 21-year-old carril parotkov and andre turskey came from estonia. they've been running a very lucrative and debit card skimming operation, but their scheme ran into trouble a few weeks ago when a customer noticed a problem with her atm transaction, a skimming device like this one came out, too. chesterfield county police set up surveillance and the two men returned. we spoke with lieutenant steefr grohorski by phone. >> we believe they conducted at least a transaction and at which point they were stopped and there was a traffic stop. >> reporter: by 2:00 that morning police had jumped in searching the suspects' apartment. inside there was cash, lots of

it $1300 in a wallet. $8,000 in a pink case. more than $8600 in a brown paper bag. two more stacks of bills all told, more than $32,000. police also found multiple credit cards and an atm skimming device used to copy card numbers. >> they've got a significant amount of money. it seemed like they were doing this pretty consistently. >> reporter: investigators are just starting to determine how many banks might have been targeted from northern virginia to richmond. at a bank of america just down the street from the suspect's apartment, atm customers glad to hear of the recent arrests. >> if they catch them it's good because it's your money and you work for it. people work for their money, though. >> reporter: when i join you at 6:00, i'll tell you how wide spread this operation might be and i'll tell you how many victims there might be out there. back to you now, jim. >> julie, thank you. while we were looking into ways to help you protect money from

skimmers, you could be at more risk the next time you pay for gas at the pump. we'll have more on that in our second half hour. >> developing right now, metro just released a picture of a man they say beat up a bus driver this morning. take a look at the flyer. metro tell us us this man started punching a bus driver in the face after he was asked to pay for his fare. he gave that driver a black eye. it was on north capitol and p streets. if you have any information you are urged to call police. donovan mcnabb has to spend more than two weeks in jail to settle a dui charge. mcnabb pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. in june we told you the former quarterback was busted after hitting another car at a red light in arizona. police say his blood alcohol level was more than double the legal limit.

along with jail time, mcnabb will be on home detention and perform community service and pay a fine. right now thousands of people in virginia are driving home on what's called the worst freeway in america. i-66 just received that distinction from the digital media company thrillist. 66 is infamous for its backups and its multiple annoyances. this title comes is based on stats from the federal highway administration that includes hours spent sitting in traffic and the rough roads and the number of people killed while traveling on it. bad news for drivers in the reston area. that water line repair along sunrise valley drive will not be finished before your rush hour ends. the westbound lanes of sunrise valley still closed right now and the detour is between usgs drive and glade drive. water buckled part of that road there, as you see and has limited access to several office buildings. now to a story you will see only on news 4 tonight.

we have confirmed two deaths in the district this year. they've been linked to synthetic drugs. the medical examiner's office tells news 4 that two overdoses over the past six months were the result of synthetic drugs. there is an increase in crime associated with the drugs. well, the news of those deaths comes as muriel bowser is headed to china on a trade mission and china is thought to be the largest exporter of synthetic drugs. mark segraves brings up the issue that she will be bringing up the issue when she meets with chinese leaders. >> the dea and fbi will tell you that the majority of the synthetic compounds that come into the states that end up in those synthetic drug cigarettes come from china. >> reporter: local and federal law enforcement agencies have said the surge of synthetic drugs on the streets is a growing problem that has led to

an increase in violence. d.c. police have ramped up their efforts to combat the new drugs. the d.c. council has given the police chief added powers to go after store owners who sell the synthetics. saturday mayor muriel bowser will lead a delegation to china for a week of meetings focused on improving trade relations. jack evans will be part of that delegation and he says the issues of synthetics isn't on the agenda. >> i have to say in all of the briefings that's not come up so i can't say there are plans to address that. >> it's going to be added to the list of topics being discussed after chief linear suggested that it could help. >> that's something that the chief brought up with me, as well and i'm going to try to figure out how we can work it into some of our conversations. >> the mayor was noncommittal on who she would discuss the issue with and who she would ask the chinese government and business leaders who she's meeting with and you'll bring up the issue of synthetics and i am working and

chief tracee wilkins is live now in district heights with our first look at this new memorial. tracee? >> reporter: this is the memorial behind me and about a half mile into the woods, that's where the crash actually happened. let me take you back to september 2008. four people died in this crash. it was a rainy and foggy night and that was an aged medevac with too many hours to name that went up in the air to try and rescue two people who had been seriously injured in a car accident. today their sacrifices are honored. >> lord and father, we stand in a holy place today, a place where our loved ones gave the ultimate gift of laying down their lives for others. ♪ >> pilot stephen bunker. i had the privilege to fly with steve bunker, and what a special

energy security because the u.s. is already producing more oil than it buys and the main reason, he said it would not make a meaningful, long-term contribution to the american economy. >> this pipeline would neither be a silver bullet for the economy as was promised by some, nor the express lane to climate disaster proclaimed by others. if congress is serious about wanting to create jobs, this was not the way to do it. >> the thing is president obama's entire argument is undercut by his own state department which put out a report last year that said this pipeline would do less to climate change than transporting oil by tankers or railroad. it also said not only would the pipeline create some 16,000 jobs, but it would pump billions of dollars into the economy. back to you. >> all right. chris lawrence in the newsroom. thank you. during his announcement the president pointed to the fact that we've seen 68 straight

months of job growth. a streak he called the longest on record and the latest jobs report out shows the u.s. added 271,000 jobs for the month of october. numbers for august and september were also revised higher and with those gains, the unemployment rate now stands at 5%. that is the lowest it's been in seven and a half years. we've seen fewer people give up on job searches and wages are also on the rise and the average stands at $25.20 an hour and a 2.5% jump above inflation and that's the number that has many economic experts suggesting that it's more likely than not that the federal reserve will increase interest rates when it meets next month. well, now to some controversy that is surrounding the leading republican presidential candidate, dr. ben carson. his campaign is working to clear up questions over a connection

to west point that he has written andec spoken about numerous time "gifted hand." west point has no record of carson applying and nevertheless, being accepted. he never formally applied. his campaign tried to clarify to the daily caller today saying that it does not mean he lied. quote, he was introduced to folks from west point by his rotc supervisors and they told him they could help him get an appointment based on his grades and performance in rotc. a cleej student from northern virginia who was killed in norfolk was now laid to rest today. the funeral was held for joseph bose. he was buried in alexandria where he grew up. police are still looking for the person who shot him in norfolk last weekend. bose's cousin believes he was

and now your storm team 4 forecast. the warmest november 6th has ever seen in our area. 80 degrees and that's the temperature we saw across the region today. not only 80 in d.c., but 80 in dulles and the bw, all three set a record and it was a hot day here. hot down towards australia, too, and hot enough for this. take a look at this. this is an awesome storm making its way in. notice the clouds continuing to develop and that is a shelf cloud right there and once the shelf cloud moves through, that's when you start to see the rain come out of the storms and the shelf cloud is simply the storm as it moves on in. seeing the development of the motion, the vertical motion right ahead of that shelf cloud. they were seeing some rain down there and what a great shot that is. i love that shot down towards sydney australia during the day yesterday. yeah. they're getting thunderstorms

there, not here. we are talking about nice, warm weather and still 75 degrees and we have clouds now and winds out of the south at 9 miles per hour and the rest area, 80 in manassas, and 76 in mart insburg and 75 down toward pa tuxet river and storm team 4 radar, a little bit on the breezy side and we don't have showers just yet and the front back to our west and the showers down toward portions of west virginia. this batch of showers will move in here and we'll see a sprinkle and will a shower and here we are around 7:00 and once again, here is the shower here and maybe a strifrngel down here and most of us will be on the dry side and watch what happens overnight and this is where woo have the best chance of rain south of washington and down toward the northern neck around fredericksburg. everybody else will be on the dry side, but it gets a lot cooler and more cloud cover, too.

a 9-year-old's life cut short after a crash and tonight people who live near the scene are calling for change. right now at 5:30, that little girl was in a vehicle that collided with another car and just last night hundreds of people came together to remember her. the cars collided at woodyard road and canberra drive in maryland on monday night, news 4's derrick ward spoke to people who are demanding action. >> this week started out in the worst possible way for this community and specifically for this family that lives in this community of woodyard road, but it's raised already high concerns about just how dangerous thiintersection it.

[ siren ] >> the people who live near this intersection of woodyard road and canberra drive have become a kufrt om to the sound of car crashes. >> every month there is an accident. >> but the one that happened on monday was worse than most. a child died in this crash, 9-year-old daichell brown. >> it was very hard because she was a very friendly girl and everybody knew her. >> daichell was a passenger in a car driven by her mother. she was seriously injured. the accident happened as they turned from canberra and woodyard. they collided wi a car headed in another direction. hundreds turned out in a candlelight vigil to remember the little girl. >> i used to talk to her about stuff in school. >> my first day of school, she was really nice to me because it was me and my friend. she treated me like a sister. >> but aside from the grief there was also momentum building for changes here and the intersection that's become notorious because they say the status quo has just been too

costly. not only was there grieving and remembrances at that candlelight vigil and they started an effort to make sure this intersection was as safe as it can be and this never happens again, in clinton, derrick ward, news 4. >> here at the live desk we are getting a clearer picture of the debris of the russian airliner which may have been brought down by a bomb. the inspectors searching the crash site in reg i want's sinai peninsula. they're looking for personal belongings and of course, the passengers' remains and scattered in the debris were things like children's books and a camera. the plane crashed after takeoff and killed all 224 people onboard. isis is claiming responsibility, but u.s., fishls have not confirmed this was a terrorist attack. the white house says it's reviewing security at overseas airports for all flights bound for the united states. i'm chris lawrence.

it is a week since a fire broke out in a chemistry class. two students are still recovering from their injuries and now "the washington post" is reporting that warnings are going out to schools nationwide about the dangers of using flammable liquids on open desks during classroom demonstrations. school officials have not specified which experiment was going on at the time. federal investigators are looking into that pier. ryan seacrest may be one of the busiest people in all of showbiz, but he took some time out for a special debut at children's hospital in the district. sea crest's along with the children national health system opened up a brand new broadcast in studio inside the hospital. patients will be able now to watch via closed-circuit tv and even have a chance to call in when celebs come to visit. among those at the grand opening, bethesda's own gold medal swimmer katy ledecky.

there is now a federal warrant for a man accused of killing his wife inside a dunkin' donuts where they both work. bhadreshkumar patel has been on the run since april. investigators tell us he killed his wife inside the back room of a dunkin' donuts in hanover. no one has seen him since he popped up at a hotel in new jersey. family relatives in the area may be helping patel, but they don't think he's left the country. more and more e. coli cases in the pacific northwest now linked to chipotle. health officials in oregon and washington state now say 40 people are sick because of it.

a dozen people have been hospitalized so far. chipotle has temporarily closed more than 40 restaurants in oregon and washington state. the cause of that e. coli is under investigation. it's believed to be more likely connected to produce than meat. there is a potential breakthrough in cancer treatment that came to light during the rush to save a little girl's life. layla richards was dying of acute lymphoblastic leukemia just a few months ago. british doctors got permission from the ethics department to try immunocell therapy, using genome editing they tweaked the dna of the t-cells from a donor so they target only leukemia cells. healthy cells were not impacted. >> this is her today standing, laughing, giggling and i'm just thankful. it's a miracle. >> these cells appear to have worked incredible well for her. >> layla is now cancer-free, but

researchers and doctors in london warn that this treatment may not work on all leukemia patients. a jury is still processing testimony from the man seen being punched repeatedly by a police officer in suburban detroit. floyd dent testified yesterday about his encounter with officer william melendez back in january. melendez is now on trial for assault. dent said he was beaten and strangled while the dash cam video recorded the traffic stop. >> he had jumped on me, he started choking me and then he started beating me in the head. >> charges including cocaine possession have been dismissed now against dent who has already reached a $1.4 million settlement with the city. testimony resumes on monday. >> we had told you about the problem with skimming, but those new chip cards are supposed to fix that, but what about when you get gas at the pump.

right now gonzaga college high school hockey players are hitting the rink in memory of one of their own, it has been one year since a car crash killed a gonzaga senior, dominic petty. >> david culver is in dupont. quite a showing from a community you know well. >> i do know, jim. this is my alma mater, gonzaga and they're all out here and they're all out here with smiles and they're laughing and enjoying one another. that was certainly not the case a year ago as they were dealing with such a tragedy that rocked this community. gonzaga is a community that loves to be together and that's what they're doing tonight, but before the inaugural puck dropping here and you see they're cleaning the ice right now, they held a street festival just outside the ice arena here, and they had all of the folks of the community coming together to enjoy one another and all of this to celebrate the life of number 11. the washington capitals, they

helped put this together and they provided much of the entertainment and an inflatable outdoor rink as you see games for the kids and as you head inside there were t-shirts and concessions and just about everything bearing either dom's face, name or number. in november of last year, the gonzaga community learned of dom's tragic passing. he was in a car with other students that ran out of gas. they pulled over on the beltway and another driver slammed into them, killing the beloved senior. thousands filled the shrine of the immaculate conception for his funeral mass, but a year later his teammates say today is about remembering what made him such a good friend. >> we really feel like he's always present and always there to help us out and keep us moving and a year ago we sat here, and it was a devastating moment for the team, and for the school and certainly for the community, but our goal has been to remember dom and the way he would want to and to celebrate

heights. you heard julie talking about a sophisticated skimmers found on atms in virginia. skimmers are popping up at gas station pumps. chip card technology is supposed to reduce fraud, but it's expensive. major u.s. banks set deadlines to install chip card technology and they gave atms and gas pumps a later deadline than retailers. we know retailers got an october 1st deadline, but when it comes to atms, mastercard deadline is next year and visa, 2017, and gas pumps have a 2017 deadline. in the meantime, you have to swipe your card and here's what you can do to minimize the risk. for starters, go to atms and gas stations in well-lit, high traffic areas and you can cover the keypad to protect your pin from hidden cameras and jiggle the insert area to make sure a skimmer isn't attached to it.

you get the green light through the morning through the afternoon. again, more moderate impacts right to areas like the northern neck and st. mary's as well and low impact to the north and if you plan on doing something during the afternoon, i think you'll be able to get by just fine. the rain ends tomorrow afternoon at 6:00, 7:00 p.m. and the temperatures in the 60s on saturday to the 50s on sunday and if you plan on getting out and maybe raking and keep in mind, we could have wind coming through the area. this is another big change that will be taking place. actually for monday, our temperatures will be down into the 30s. folks will be putting the sweaters back on and the coats, too, for early monday morning and of course, we stay in the 60s all through next week and doug has more with that chance of rain coming up. >> b. chlt j. the women who accused an obgyn,

a judge ordered johns hopkins medicine to pay $190 million to former patients of dr. nikita levy. lisa robinson reports on court's explanation for the delay. >> reporter: these women all say dr. nikita levy did them irreparable harm by secretly recording patients during pelvic exams at the east baltimore medical center. >> i'm traumatized. i'm scared to go to the doctor. i if get one bit of pain i will not go. i will suffer with the pain. >> evelina is on an emotional roller coaster. she was 22 when she first started seeing dr. levy, and each delivered her first child. >> he saw all three of my girls at the age of 12. >> her daughter says she's unable to trust men and to be in certain spaces. >> i don't want to use public

restrooms. i'm thinking somebody's watching me. when i go into dressing rooms, i think somebody's watching me. >> when the women think back they all agree that on many occasions there was no chaperone in the room during exams. now these women say they're victimized all over again because the settlement money has yet to be released the money. >> release the money due to us because if it wasn't for us women, we're the victims and we have to go through -- we shouldn't have to go through all of this over again. >> she needs the money to pay for the counseling that is an out of pocket expense. >> i want to assure everyone that we understand that and we are working as expeditiously, as quickly as we can to schedule the interviews, to conduct the interviews and then to make the award. >> judge irma raker is charged with overseeing the allegation

process. she works with a team of doctors to make sure that the 196 patients of dr. levy. >> we will be calling you. please answer your telephone so we can schedule your interview. >> reporter: last week they made 200 calls a s ans and scheduled interviews. the goal was to schedule up to 35 a week and they're in random order. >> it's a telephonic interview. it will take close to an hour, but we will schedule those interviews at times that are convenient for the former patients. >> reporter: but these women say it's hard for them to wait. >> we are hurting. we're if pain. we're devastated. we want to move forward. we want to get the help that we need. >> now no one has been paid in the settlement including the lawyers. the money is in a settlement

from director j.j. abrams. the 32-year-old has terminal cancer and he and his wife realized he may not live to see the force awakens in theaters and his wife began a facebook campaign that made it right to the director. if you're disabled, hailing a taxi can be challenging and at times a humiliating experience. >> people who use wheelchairs say they sometimes have to ride in the trunk area of taxis. news 4 reports on how that's changing in d.c. with new vehicles called mv-1s. >> reporter: christina rhodes rolls up the ramp into one of d.c.'s newest wheelchair accessible taxi. >> it gives that freedom so i can do it on my own terms so i feel i'm in charge. >> reporter: that's important to her. she's never been able to walk after she was hurt by her biological father. >> i have a t-5 injury which is

midway from my back from domestic violence when i was 10 months old. taking taxis wasn't always this easy and she describes having to ride in the trunk space of cabs that were wheelchair accessibles. >> there have been situations when i've been dressed to the nines going to a gala and then i have to get into the trunk of a tax toy get to the event. rhodes is with mobility venture, a company helping to make these wheelchair-accessible taxis, more than a dozen new mv-1s roll out in d.c. there's room enough for two wheelchairs as well asengers in. >> they have made this program happen. the only vehicle produced on the planet specifically to be wheelchair accessible. cabbies who want to drive mv-1s are going through free training including how to safely buckle
