distinctions between these republican candidates. rand paul tried to very forcefully last night make the argument that you can't spend tax money by blowing up the military budget. that's something that republicans as a whole have supported more money for a strong military. we've heard it from carly fiorina and other candidates. rand paul says if you do that, you are spending tax money and spending is not really a part of the republican program but we've got to shrink government and make it smaller. as i said, there is push back from not only fiorina but marco rubio where he said we need to think of safety and security. we can't have an economy without security first. there were quite a few push backs. you can't be a conservative if you're talking about spending that much money. >> tracie, "meet the press" moderator chuck todd tweeted no clear winners in last night's debates. did anyone stand out? >> reporter: you know, as a group i would say that those middle tier candidates really stood out.

you've got ben carson and donald trump at the top of this group, but there were times in this debate when they were largely silent and we heard a lot and a lot of push back from people like john kasich and jeb bush who's been trying to get his numbers up. he definitely had a better debate than he's had in some other situations. so rubio, marco rubio who has been sort of a number three candidate in many of the polls had some moments last night. so while you may not say there was a clear winner, those middle candidates, fiorina, clearly had strong moments last night. >> jeb bush had big moments in a discussion of immigration and a lot to say of donald trump's plan. >> reporter: donald trump wants to build that wall, have mexico pay for it and deport 11 million people. he got quite a bit of push back from a number of candidates including jeb bush on the deportation essentially saying you're talking about tearing families apart here. there was some applause.
