new today we're now hearing more about a local home and the man who lived there from some of the people who lived next door to him for years. and i'm still tracking showers on storm team 4 radar. coming up in my updated forecast, when the rain is over and when the winds arrive. developing right now. police set up outside a school. a person walking nearby, hit and killed. i'm gathering details about this crash that has drivers hitting the brakes for a while. plus, top honors for a man from our area. the moment of a lifetime set to play out at any minute now at the white house. his story will have the country

captivated. >> i'm live in silver spring where a man was found dead in the home that you see behind me here on winona court. police do not suspect foul play, but they did uncover something unexpected inside the home. chemicals, the kind that can be used to create a drug lab. it began with a 911 dispatch. the caller said they had found the relative dead inside this home on winona court. police say there are no signs of foul play, but in the course of the death investigation, a surprising discovery was made. chemicals similar to those associated with a drug lab. that's when the hazmat team was brought? >> we suspect but nothing you can put your finger on. >> reporter: scott lives next door. he says his neighbor was a nice guy but he did wonder about the large greenhouse in the backyard and all the activity at the house. >> he had all sorts of different

containers inside and he was building -- i don't know if he had some -- he said he was making kind of fertilizer or something for his greenhouse. so he did have some weird stuff coming in and out. >> it's unclear how the homeowner died. an autopsy will determine that. as for the chemicals and how they were being used, police are still investigating. neighbors say it is all very unusual for this quiet silver spring neighborhood. >> i came home yesterday and i saw five police cars in the area. i never thought that would happen in this area, for sure. >> reporter: and still the investigation continues. police have not yet released the name of the man who died. in silver spring, megan mcgrath, news4. and here's the latest on storm team 4 radar. rain from this morning has moved out. i'm still tracking this area of scattered showers. this will be pushing into the district within the next hour. this rain will be out of here before 1:00 p.m. after that we're dry. even getting in on some late day

about 15 minutes. we'll bring it to you live right here and on nbc washington app as well. new details on a pedestrian accident in prince william candidate. the man who was hit has now died. crash investigators just finished up their work there. chopper 4 captured this video over the 8200 block of linton hall road. we are working to get more details about this man. police tell me they are still in the process of contacting next of kin. we do know the striking vehicle stayed at the scene there, which is close to piney branch elementary school. police reopened the road about an hour ago. barbara? >> all right, thank you. today we're going to learn when an arlington husband will go to trial for charges that he killed his wife. david black is charge with first degree murder for stabbing his wife bonnie to death back in april. the couple was in the process of getting a divorce. the victim's 3 and 5-year-olds

found her body. they actually found the body before a neighbor later spotted them wandering around outside. a confrontation on the streets of baltimore turned into a deadly officer-involved shooting. a man is dead and five-year man of the police department is in the hospital. two officers approached the suspect last night. they noticed he had a gun. the suspect shot one officer in the leg. police returned fire, killing that man. in just a few hours three south side virginia police officers will head to court for a deadly incident caught on camera. this is the first time we're seeing this video of the confrontation between police and linwood lamberg in 2013. they were taking him to the hospital because he was hallucinating and acting paranoid. he kicked the car. officers tazed him repeatedly as he lay on the ground. >> no! >> every time you get up, we're

going to taz you. >> stop. >> i just did cocaine, man. why you trying to kill me, man? >> police deny any claims of excessive force here saying he was a danger. there are no criminal charges filed in this case but his family is suing for wrongful death. today's hearing is about a defense motion. the officers are upset the word murder was used in the lawsuit filing even though his death was not ruled a homicide. this morning three more of gop candidates make it official in new hampshire. lindsey graham, ted cruz, and rick santorum have filed paperwork for the primary there. all candidates have been told november 20th to file. caught in the middle of a disaster. the wild weather that has millions dealing with big problems this morning. plus, targeted in the sky? frightening moments inside the cockpit thousands of feet in the air. but the people onboard did that might have prevented this from happening again. we're back in 60 seconds.

akron, ohio, is being carted away now from the scene. the video of the moment of impact. investigators believe believe it could help them find out what caused the jet to slam into the apartment building. in the left-hand corner you can see the moment of impact and then a burst of flames. all nine people onboard died. yesterday the ntsb said fog could have been a factor in this crash. the recovered black boxes will be in d.c. for investigation today. this week secret service said the man threw something at the white house using a slingsh slingshot. two months ago the police say the same man broke a window at the u.s. capitol. police arrested him in september and he said he would be back to break more windows. olson has orders to stay away from the capitol and nearby office buildings. nbc news chopper helps nab two suspect in a laser track

picking up. so breezy later today as we dry out with some sunshine making an appearance. 1:00 p.m. still plenty of clouds. showers will push out at that point. temperature around 60 degrees. as we work our way to 4:00, 5:00, temperature of 64. that's going to be our high temperature for the day today. about 64, 65 degrees. 7:00 p.m. we're at a breezy 57 with mainly clear skies at that point. coming up in ten minutes i'm going to have a closer look at the winds because it's not just breezy this afternoon but we're dealing with winds through weekend. again, i'll have more in ten minutes. >> thank you. tonight parents in montgomery county have one more chance to sound off about the school district's redistricting plan. there's a public hearing tonight. tense moments at monday's meeting with parents and students came armed with fines and voiced their frustration on the plan to ease overcrowding. the plan would include moving students from growing areas to schools with fewer students. tonight's hearing gets under way at 7:00 p.m. it's at the board of education building in rockville.

live desk. happening right now, president obama there in the east room with a crowd to honor a man from maryland who is receiving the

nation's highest military award. former army captain florent groberg. let's listen in for a minute. >> and so on an august day three years ago that flo found himself leading a group of american and of can soldiers as they escorted commanders to a meeting with local afghans. it was a journey that the team had done many times before. a short walk on foot including passage over a narrow bridge. at first they passed pedestrians, a few cars and bicycle, even some children. but then they began to approach the bridge and a pair of motorcycles sped toward them from the other side. the afghan troops shot s shoute bikers to stop and they did, ditching their bikes in the middle of the bridge and running away. that's when flo noticed something to his left. a man dressed in dark clothing walking backwards just some ten feet away.

the man spun around and turned toward them. and that's when flo sprinted toward him. he pushed them away from the formation and as he did, he noticed an object under the man's clothing, a bomb. the motorcycles had been a diversion. and at that moment flo did something extraordinary. he grabbed the bomber by his vest and kept pushing him away. all those years of training on the track and the classroom, out in the field, all that came together in those few seconds, he had the instincts and the courage to do what was needed. one of flo comrades, sergeant andrew mahony had joined in, too. together they shoved the bomber again and again, and they pushed him so hard he fell to the ground on to his chest and then the bomb detonated. ball bearing, debris, dust exploded everywhere. flo was thrown some 15 to 20 feet and knocked unconscious.

moments later he woke up in the middle of the road in shock. his eardrum was blown out, he's bleeding badly. still he realized if the enemy launched a secondary attack he would be a sitting duck. when a comrade found him in the smoke, flo had his pistol out dragging his wounded body from the road. that blast by the bridge claimed four american heroes. four heroes flo wants us to remember today. >> there we've heard president obama speaking about the heroism displayed by retired army captain florent groberg. the president affectionately referring to him as flo. 32-year-old there tackled that suicide bomber in afghanistan back in 2012 and we did hear the president talk about the four lives that were lost in the attack, but the veterans affairs secretary said just yesterday on veterans day that his actions saved lives. he was badly injured in that

attack, spent some people at walter reed medical center. but we want to tell you that he did, before going into the army, he did go to the university of maryland. ran track. was one of the best in the state. that is the latest. back to you, barbara. >> what a tory. thank you. and we have a developing story this morning right now, the storm may have passed but now the clean-up begins in iowa. a storm slammed parts of southern iowa yesterday. powerful winds and up to 50 miles per hour hit the area leaving a trail of destruction. a string of tornadoes damaged house, vehicles and toppled a semi truck. today residents will clean up as the storm heads east. at the same time, vdot is laying out plans for combating winter weather. aside from using the massive snowplow, salt and sand pile, officials are excited about a brand new interactive website that they say they can track snowfall in realtime. >> they will find out where a truck is in relationship to their house and every five

minutes they will see what kind of progress that truck is making towards getting their street cleaned. >> the website is vdotplows.org. once we goet a little closer to snow season we will put that information up on the nbc washington app. we are nowhere near snow season. just kidding. doug put out his winter weather outlook on monday. if you haven't caught that, i'll repost it on twitter and facebook right after this. here's the latest on storm team 4 radar. tracking another batch of showers moving through the area. this is going to be out of here by about 1:00. so over a couple more hours dealing with some more showers, have the umbrella handy. you see the showers pushing into the district, fairfax, manassas, traveling along 66 dealing with that rain. but as you work our way toward the later afternoon hours we dry out, winds pick up. it's breezy out there. new, tomorrow and saturday it is down right windy. and in fact this weekend going to be the coolest weekend so far this season when you factor in

the winds, friday night is going to be very chilly. i'll have more on the weekend forecast in ten minutes. and developing this morning, we just learned the name of a man who was shot and killed in prince william county. county police say zachary meter was shot on village drive in woodbridge. they poufound him in a parking last night. no word of any arrests. following some breaking news from the adams morgan neighborhood. a braank robbery has traffic stopped. this happened about an hour ago at a pnc in the 1700 block of columbia road. that road is closed right now. take another route if you're headed in that direction. here's what we know so far. a man walked away with money, undisclosed amount. police are looking for him right now. it is unclear if he was armed at the time. but nobody was hurt in this incident. again, police looking for that man right now. that's the latest. >> thank you.

ohio man says hot pockets saved his life during a deadly plane crash. you know that plane crash in akron, ohio, earlier this week. according to buzz feet, jason bartley lives in that building. bartley was heading home when he decided to make a detour to pick up hot pockets from the store. that is when the plane crash happened. the nine people onboard the plane were killed. a facebook post from a restaurant store has gone viral. newly wood jessica morris didn't

receive a tip from a couple she was serving. instead they left a note. it said, quote, he's my husband. find your own. good luck. the post on facebook is no longer there but it was shared more than 50,000 times. morris fought back with a message on behalf of all servers. she signed it, the woman you offended by thinking so lowly of, that i would attempt to flirt with a man who is with his life. shia la above is at it again. this time stunt reverse in chronological order all of the 27 films he's appeared in. he's live streaming it. temperatures right now in 50s. washington at 57 degrees. frederick at 54. in the suburb, a little bit cooler. 60, highs. showers until 1:00. after that, we're dry. it's going to be windy tomorrow and saturday. now, for tomorrow, high temperature of 59 degrees with mostly to partly sunny skies. this is your friday evening. when you're heading out to dinner, when you factor in the winds, it's going to feel like temperatures are only in the 30s for most of us. about 36 in gaithersburg. 43 in the district. have that warmer jacket handy. saturday, breezy to windy still. a high of 53. on sunday, a high of 57. and looking ahead to next wednesday, slight chance of some showers later in the day. but more importantly, look at that temperature. almost at 70 degrees. also want to talk about this weekend. redskins game on sunday with kickoff at 1:00.

temps for the game in the mid to upper 50s. calm winds at that point. and plenty of sunshine. >> thank you. some mormons are planning to leave the church this weekend over the church's new policy on same-sex families. the policy fans children of gay couples getting baptized until their 18 years old and identifies married gay couples as people who renounce their faith. according to a facebook page dozens will be part of a public group resignation on saturday. the church of jesus christ of latter day saints teaches that marriage is only between a man and woman. a lot of you may be asking if steven strasburg's recent medical procedure will affect him next year. his agent said the growth was noncancerous but affected his pitching last year. right now on news4 midday it is resonating across the country how the fallout from campus problems in missouri has reached our area. plus, developing right now. it started as a check on a

relative and soon turned into a big emergency response. what was inside one home that made things a lot more serious. live pictures right now from the white house. president obama just now placing the medal of honor around the neck of captain flo as the president calls him, groberg, and at this point tearfully, as you might imagine, he is receiving a round of applause for the lives that he saved during his time in afghanistan, wounded, severely injured leg in that incident, and at this point the 32-year-old can stand proudly at attention, joining a small group of people who have been honored with the medal of honor.

a retired army captain just received the medal of honor. special ceremony is wrapping up in the east room of the white house right now. florent groberg received that award. highest medal in the country. groberg tackled a suicide bomber in afghanistan three years ago. he grew up in montgomery county after moving here from france as a young child. he attended walter johnson high school. became a naturalized citizen. went to the university of maryland and he recovered at walter reed medical center for several years. and we are staying on top of two developing stories right now.

first, a death investigation in silver spring that turned into a hazmat scene. montgomery county police found a man dead late last night in a women on winona court. the investigation also found a mixture of chemicals similar to those associated with a drug lab. hazmat crews were called in. police say there is no evidence of foul play in the man's death. also developing this morning, three south boston, virginia, police officers will be in court for this deadly incident caught on camera. it's the first time we're seeing this video from that 2013 confrontation between police and linwood lambert. officers were taking lambert to the hospital because he was hallucinating and acting paranoid. they tazed him repeatedly after he kicked in the window of the police cruiser and charged the hospital entrance. the family has filed a civil suit against the police department.

we are also keeping a close eye on the weather this morning. >> certainly are. rainy morning across the area. changes are on the way. storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal has an update for us now. >> you can see there on storm team 4 radar tracking another round of showers moving through the area. this should be out of the beltway in an hour and half as we move toward the afternoon and evening hours. we dry out. the winds pick up. breeze in if you're downing out tonight. you want the warmer jacket if you factor in the winds and temperatures in the 50s. now, today, tomorrow, over the weekend, a good day to get carwashed. we're looking at a dry stretch of weather next chance of rain comes on wednesday. that's only a small chance. a high temperature today of about 64 degrees. i'm going to have a closer look at storm team 4 radar in ten minutes. right now a big battle is taking place against isis in iraq. kurdish fighters are holding position now as they captured a major isis supply route to the town of sinjar.

750,000 fighters. they have surrounded the town and isolated isis members there. he threatened to, quote, shoot every black person i see, according to police in missouri. that college student hunter park will appear in court today on charges of making a terrorist threat. police say he made the comments on the anonymous social media app yik yak and were directed at university of missouri students. campus spent days protesting racial injustices. the protest prompted the resignation of mizzou's president and chancellor. similar protests have spread to college campuses across the country. students at ithaca college walked out of class. they said the president hasn't acted quickly enough to incidents like raciallyinged party invitations sent out by campus fraternity. the student governments seb out e-mail asking for a vote of no confidence in the school's president. the same scene at howard university. students at howard university made it clear where they stand on protests at the university of

missouri. many of the people at a demonstration yesterday are from the west and wanted to show solidarity. they held hands at the flagpole on the yard and bowed their heads in prayer. developments in the race for governor in virginia. republican u.s. senate nominee created a political action committee. it's called let's grow, virginia. the announcement comes one month after the former white house adviser made his run public. "the washington post" reports two fund-raisers are set for next month. one of them in northern virginia. the pact doesn't have a website or staff yet. this midday a firsthand look at mental health reform in virginia. state senator is in fairfax today to meet the experts in the community. deed's emerged a as leader for fight of mental health reform a couple years ago. his own son suffer fred bipolar disorder. in 2013 does attacked his father and then killed himself. almost all of the gop candidates will be in iowa or new hampshire today and

this fire. northwest of the city. it's not close to any homes right now but you can see how it's totally taken over some spots. the weather there isn't supposed to change for several days. call it drone versus ferris wheel. a rogue drone temporarily shut down a tourist attraction last night. kurt city officials at weir 57 say the drone appeared to be trying to fly through the spokes of that ferris wheel. didn't quite make it though. it bounced off the wheel and crashed through on outdoor table. police confiscated the drone but is still looking for the owner. >> i can't figure out why somebody would fly a drone so close to other human beings. i don't get it. >> luckily no one was hurt here. there was no damage to the ferris wheel. and it was able to reopen shortly after that incident. under stress at work? why changing one thing could change that. plus, why one black friday tradition is changing for one major retailer.

district. this is quickly though pushing off toward the north and east. this will be out of here by 1:00 or earlier. and then after that, we will track some sunshine making a return to the area. you can see everybody inside of the beltway dealing with rain. top of the beltway still seeing showers. and heavier shower it is you're traveling along the bottom of the beltway. along route 1. your weekend outlook, dealing with breezy to windy conditions on saturday. leaf raking probably a better day to do that is sunday. farmers market on sunday. it could have a real problem with the winds keeping things bat tenned down. the park, better day is sunday. winds relaxed and temperatures are a little bit warmer. >> thank you. bad news, company health care costs have gone up again. good news, it's the lowest rate increase in about 20 years. more bad news. employees are still paying more here. average rate increased for mid size and large companies, that increase was about 3.2%. that's the lowest since 1996.

ran toward the flames of a burning church van. news4 obtained some exclusive video. you see it here. it shows michael's wife holding a baby that he rescued. he was driving by when he saw the aftermath of a pickup truck that rammed into a church van on sunday as it was burning. he jumped out of his car and into action. twisted metal and flames everywhere at that point. the good samaritan put his own life in danger while his wife called 911. >> what's going on? >> it's babies. it's a whole van full of kids. my husband is trying to pull these babies out. >> i got to get this baby out. i actually felt that the van was going to explode. >> we learned the driver of that pickup truck florez had a history of driving offenses. he died along with an elderly couple and 6-year-old girl. passenger who is pregnant lost her baby during surgery. a school district in virginia now is investigating a video. this video of a bus driver. take look. it appears to show the driver filling out paperwork at the

wheel. this is in hampton, virginia. the man who recorded the video said the driver wasn't paying attention to the roads and nearly hit him. the man took the video to the hampton school district and police. the district said students' safety is a priority and that it would take action as needed. check this out. lightning strike at chicago's willis tower. it took the amaziing photo on wednesday. if you ever capture an amazing image like this end it to us. amazing photo there. temperature here now at 57 degrees. winds not an issue. nine miles an hour. later today winds will pick up. it will be breezy during the late afternoon and evening hours. here's your hour by hour temp forecast. 1:00, 3:00 p.m., temperatures are hovering around 60 degrees. we'll start to notice a mix of sun and clouds at 3:00. sunset now is just before 5:00 p.m.

still tracking showers. for the most part i-95, these continuing to quickly push out of the area. you can see parts of arlington starting to dry out. this rain is out of here by 1:00 or earlier. and after that, the winds will start to pick up. you already see rain pulling out of the parts of virginia. momentarily pulling out of the district. weekend outlook if you're raking again, sunday looking like the better day. dealing with breezy to windy conditions across the area. on saturday, as we look to farmers market, the coolest weekend so far in farmers market is going to have a bit of an issue with the weather on saturday morning. a high temperature here tomorrow of 59 degrees. on saturday, a high temperature of only about 53 degrees.

sunday, a high of 57. something to look forward to, 70 next wednesday. >> okay, thank you. a special story out of illinois now. a world war ii veteran was honored with his brother's pilots bracelet. robert hawkins died while fighting in the war 70 years ago. he was 19 years old at the time when the engine went out and his plane. a german family found hawkins' bracelet and kept it for year. it was finally returned to robert's brother gus on veterans day. >> i was completely taken aback when i was called and told that they had a bracelet that belonged to my brother. it's been 70 years, you know. and this opening that chapter agains that i thought had been closed all this time. >> better late than never. guy hawkins also served in the military as lieutenant colonel in the air force. he traveled from texas to illinois for the special ceremony. >> that is the broadcast for 34id day. thanks for joining us.
