6:00 pm
the eagles of death metal that were performing there tonight. we are told at least a hundred people were inside and that it was a packed show tonight when this shooting happened. there are conflicting reports about what type of gun was used. there was a report of a kali kalashnikov and they do believe there were deaths there at the nightclub and that a number of people, potentially 60 people were being held hostage there, potentially even more than that, but now at this point police have stormed or are storming that theater there in paris. jim, doreen? >> chris, can you please go over what you were just talking about a few moments ago, and some stunning information that the mayor of paris is telling people to stay in their homes tonight. can you talk about that a little bit more again? >> yeah. exactly, doreen. i think it speaks to the severity of these attacks and
6:01 pm
the fact that they seem to be extremely well coordinated and spread out in different areas of the city. we know that anti-terrorist police have been fanning out in central paris where the restaurants and bars were located and the nightclub where some of the shootings took place as well as four miles to the north where that soccer match was going on. so you've got a coordinated effort going on across the city. police trying to get through some of these areas and collect as much evidence as they can while at the same time making sure that there aren't more incidents. we had just heard of a potential fourth incident at the les halles shopping mall, one of the biggest shopping malls in paris and the mayor of paris telling millions of people in his city do not leave home and we also, this again, also, a major development. president francois hollande has declared a state of emergency across france and he is closing france's borders after these
6:02 pm
multiple attacks. just a huge, unprecedented development as france is coping with the worst violence that country has seen in decades. >> chris, i gather that it has been definitively determined that this is terrorism, but have we any clue as to who is responsible for it yet? nobody has taken responsibility, jim. u.s. officials and french officials are now saying there is no way you could get an attack this coordinated in such a short amount of time so effective unless this was coming from an established group that this seems to be a coordinated attack and want some sort of a lone wolf situation. that is the assumption u.s. officials are working under. we have been taking a look at the social media sites and people supporting isis have gone
6:03 pm
on social media praising these attacks and using thi this #parisinflames. i will say this les halles shopping mall that potentially may be a fourth target, this was something that was identified as a potential target by al shabaab. they are a group that used to be affiliated with al qaeda. they recently switched their allegiance and now they're affiliated with isis and they have identified several targets around the world that they were going to be targeting. this shopping mall les halles was a target and minnesota was another target and no official confirmation of who may be responsible for these attacks. >> when we talk about how coordinated these attacks are, we know from covering previous terrorist attacks that that is very often part of the plan, to attack multiple areas at the same time so as to distract and to draw all of the law enforcement people to one
6:04 pm
location and and leave coverage of other areas. >> you see this in multiple attacks where a bomb or something goes off, everybody rushes in and first responders go off to help and another bomb or another attack goes off to sort of target those who respond. in the last hour, handly asked a great question when he looked at the stadium and saw all of these people and thousands still there in the stadium. well over an hour after this happened and i think it may have been that we knew that these people had gone into a security sweep in the stadium with the president of france there, if they knew the stadium itself was secure, not only do you keep thousands of people from just flooding the streets and interrupting where and how police can get around but you
6:05 pm
also know those folks are on a safe location and until you figure out where these attacks are coming from and if any more are planned that may be the best place for them. >> we appreciate that. stand by because certainly we'll be coming back to you. as has been noted earlier, there have been an awful lot of dots that have not necessarily been connected in this most recent attack. >> one of the things that has to be consider side what is believed to be the killing of the man who was known as jihadi john. he's the guy who brought sheer barbarity, he was the face, the masked face, if you would, of the barbarity of the isis regime. steve handelsman is at the pentagon now and has a little bit more to contribute in that regard. steve? >> reporter: >> we don't know what's going on
6:06 pm
in paris and how long it's been planned. experts on terrorism will tell you and it just stands to reason that putting together this kind of a coordinated attack in the very brief time, less than a full day, between the time we learned that u.s. officials say they think they killed jihadi john and the current moment would be virtually impossible, but that doesn't mean that the attackers in paris won't be saying during their attacks and they won't be putting out online as these attacks are going on that this is in revenge for jihadi john and why not? because the that jihadi john disseminat disseminated, he was not just the executioner, he was the producer of the videos and those videos that horrified millions and maybe billions of people also say terrorism experts inspired a few people to join isis.
6:07 pm
maybe some of those people who saw those videos joined up, maybe, maybe, they're involved in what's going on in paris. that is kind of of a sick connection between this guy jihadi john, the brit who went over to isis and then literally went over to syria and then became a -- a passionate killer of westerners including three americans. that's the possible connection between what he did and what's going on right now in paris. >> steve, authorities also to be wondering about any possible connection with the russian airliner that was downed under mysterious circumstances over egypt. >> reporter: well, that's certainly, if it had been a bop and if it were a bomb placed aboard by isis or some kind of isis sympathizer, keeping in mind again that this group that so horrified most of us does not horrify everybody. it inspires a minority of jihad
6:08 pm
fanatics. if we find out that bomb was an isis bomb that would have been the first time that isis reached out of the syria, iraq, lebanon, turkey area and launched an attack, not really in the west, but on an advanced country that would have been russia that is attacking isis in syria. if in paris this turns out to be isis or isis-inspired attack, this is a much more frightening expansion of the isis war. this is what jihadi john dreamed of while officials here at the pentagon were dreaming of getting him. they say they tracked their target using unnamed sources and they're not going to tell us how they did it and shouldn't and then they pulled the trigger and it was a hellfire missile from a u.s. drone, they say late yesterday. >> now they say they've got to determine if this actually was a kill. they say it's going to be tough and it happened deep in syria in raqqah or near raqqah which is the isis headquarters in syria.
6:09 pm
it's a calm, peaceful place. there's no war there. isis runs raqqah and that's if jihadi john did lose his life and pentagon officials say they're reasonably certain they got him, that's where it happened and so that's going on. this is going on in paris and maybe it's all part of one big fight against isis and isis' fight against us. back to you guys. >> thanks, steve. that certainly is yet to be determined as are so many events surrounding this particular explosion and shooting and just chaos in paris. you are looking at live pictures right now from french television and you see at the bottom where it notes that the president of france has declared a state of emergency. he has closed the borders all over that country. we might also want to note here that if you're tuning in late, there were apparently four sites
6:10 pm
where there have been -- there has been terrorist activity in paris now. we are, what, six hours behind them and it's 11:00, 12:00 and 12:00 at night over there now. and we have 35 people confirmed killed. we are hearing as many as 60 people have been killed in these events at four different sites throughout paris, shootings and two explosions near a soccer stadium just outside of paris where the president of france was attending a friendly match between france and germany. they got him out very, very quickly and another attack at a concert hall where we are told 100 people were being held hostage, but then later reports suggested that the police have moved in there and that many of those people who were in the stadium have been taken out of there. we have no idea where the hostages are still being held or not. there was also shooting and an
6:11 pm
attack at a restaurant in the middle of france and then a fourth one, we are told now at a shopping center. >> at a shopping area and regarding those hostages who were being held in that paris theater, chris lawrence was telling us just a few moments ago that we were hearing that police were moving in. i think we ought to go back to chris lawrence and see if we have any new information about that situation. chris? >> yeah, doreen. we're taking a look now at live pictures of french police there spread out around central paris investigating this crime. we are also hearing that 80,000 people, upwards of 80,000 people are still in that stadium waiting to be evacuated and we are told from what we told you earlier when we told you that the mayor of paris is telling millions of residents do not leave home, obviously this is a friday night and a lot of people are caught out in the middle of this. on social media there are now aa
6:12 pm
hash tag called, and port overt and people caught up in the middle of this there is an open door and you can come into my house and you can come into my restaurant and you can come into my business and take shelter until authorities get a better handle on what's going on. >> back here at home we can tell you that the french ambassador was at american university speaking with students from the school of international service this afternoon when all of this started happening. he just tweeted out, quote, sad, devastated and anguished from my country. i'm mark segraves and just got off the phone from d.c. homeland security official. they are telling him they don't have any credible threats to d.c., but they say, as you know, we are always hypervigilant here and they were pointing out they just conducted multiple-site, full-scale exercise and just last november involving multiple
6:13 pm
agencies in and around d.c. and they're keeping a very close eye on what's going on in paris. in the last half hour, we heard from president obama. he spoke out about what is going on in paris. he called france the united states' oldest ally and said we stand together. he also called this an outrageous attempt to terrorist innocent citizens. >> it can be grounded and almost assumed that in all of the capitals of paris as well as here and new york, chicago, l.a. and all over this countria as well, officials are on high alert considering what's going on in paris right now. >> that's certainly something we're looking into in washington tonight. that's something that we'll be -- our reporters and news desks will be monitoring throughout the evening to find out about security in d.c., but as we said no reports of any credible threats in washington
6:14 pm
right now. we go back to chris lawrence. you have an update? >> doreen, nbc's richard engel has been talking to some of his counterterrorism sources. they are telling him that this attack bears the hallmarks of al qaeda. a u.s. counterterrorism source is telling richard this was a heavily coordinated attack. they're not ruling out isis, but right now they are looking more at al qaeda. so again, we have not heard any group claim responsibility for this attack yet, but supporters of isis have been going on social media praising this attack and again, right now, counterterrorism sources say in the initial minutes and hours following what is now known to be a coordinated attack in paris, u.s. intelligence officials are looking more closely at al qaeda and its operatives. >> jim? doreen? >> chris lawrence, thank you for that and we will be comg back to you throughout this broadcast. in the meantime, we will take a
6:15 pm
break and we'll be back with more. >> before we do, steve handelsman might be able to contribute a little something to what chris just said in the latest reports in. steve, are you there? >> thanks, jim and doreen. i am here and it occurs to me that the big question by viewers has got to be, well, could i happen here? the answer, of course is possibly. i mean, 9/11 happened here, but what they say here at the pentagon, what national security experts say private security and government security experts will say is that since 9/11 because of 9/11, because of the institution of tsa, et cetera, et cetera, the u.s. has really set up quite a fortification against infiltration of terrorists from outside the country. what about isis sympathizers in the country? they're here, but in paris and france there are more of them. why? experts say that in a country like france that has a higher percentage of muslim and arab
6:16 pm
residents and citizens there's less integration and less homogenaity and less welcoming than there is in our country. that's why they say the country was ripe for the charlie hebdo attacks. those were french guys and those weren't from outside france and may be ripe for what's going on in paris. that's a lot of ifs, maybes and buts, but u.s. may be vulnerable to an internal attack. >> thanks, steve. chris lawrence, chris just mentioned "charlie hebdo," you're familiar as many people in washington who are quite cosmopolitan are familiar with paris, can you give us an idea with the approximate distance
6:17 pm
from the charlie hebdo office? >> if you look at the bataclan theater which is an historic theater where the american rock band was performing. the bataclan was in the same general neighborhood as charlie hebdo, so what we saw those islamist extremists attack the offices of charlie haebdo, you are not far at all from where the bataclan theater is. we have been hearing put imreports from there about a shooting there, that have been deaths at the nightclub, at the concert hall, but in the last, i would say ten, 15 minutes we also got another report that potentially french police were storming that concert venue trying to free those hostages or deal with any of the attackers that were still there. a lot of this is taking place in central paris, and on a friday night at the time that this happened, you're talking about nightclubs, bars, restaurants. i mean, this area would be
6:18 pm
humming with activity at this time of night. so this was clearly an area that was identified in a time that this took place where you would find a large number of people con going eig congregating. >> let me ask you something, chris, because it was mentioned earlier that al qaeda may be the person ordered -- or the group being looked at closely now as possibly being responsible for this. from your time covering the middle east, not all that long ago, am i mistaken that al qaeda and isis are not necessarily the best of buddies and in fact are competitors almost in this area of terrorism? >> exactly, jim. you put it perfectly. they are competitors in space o trying to attract funding and recruits for violent, jihadi
6:19 pm
conflict and these are two groups that are basically competing for the same resources. al qaeda obviously came first. isis nah many people's eyes is a more vicious group than al qaeda, but again, they are the two groups in which when you look at large-scale, coordinated attacks they are the two groups that you would say would have the capability to launch attacks like this. i want to point you to the live picture. we are hearing now from french tv. you can see a number of people outside and you can see french police officers there in central paris, a counterterrorism source is saying that this attack bears the hallmarks of al qaeda. you can see french police there on the street. again, there we go. we're taking a look at the, it's hard to see with the picture moving, but you can see this is a heavily populated area in
6:20 pm
central paris where a lot of people were outside tonight and again, this would have been a very chaotic scene for a lot of people going out to eat and drink on a friday night there. >> we should stress this is happening live and many of these stories are still developing and we are seeing a lot of live pictures here and some of them with law enforcement officers moving quickly and in some cases even putting people into ambulances and we are not certain exactly what we're seeing and we're going to have to wait until more -- more reliable information is available about some of this, but maybe now is a good time to recap, to go over what we do know about -- about the numbers. we are reporting that french authorities are confirming 35 people dead, but we've also heard reports that there may be as many as 60 people dead. what's the latest that you are getting on that, chris? >> boy, oh, boy, doreen.
6:21 pm
i think you've covered so many of these incidents and like anything else, these numbers are changing every ten minutes, we started talking at 11, we were at 18, 36, and now we're at 35 and i, too, have heard reports of 60 and this is a chaotic situation where you have police in multiple areas of the city looking at people, not only who may have been killed, but wounded as well in trying to assess the scope of that. the scope of that is very hard especially in a case where they are still more than likely very concerned about more attacks and they're trying to make sure that these areas are safe, but i think you can tell by some of the pictures that we are seeing there, the stretchers and these ambulances that are being called in and then driven away, that this is a horrible, horrible incident that has taken place in france and that numerous people, dozens of people have been
6:22 pm
killed. there we just saw one of the ambulances leaving and we are seeing some of the first responders on the scene now. >> indeed, chris, horrible situation and a very fluid situation right now, trying desperately all of us are trying to get our hands around it. we will continue that effort and we'll be back right after this.
6:23 pm
6:24 pm
6:25 pm
forecast. and we want to take a look at your weather tonight. it's got to be a cool night tonight and the winds still blowing out there and we have gusts blowing at 30 miles per hour and the they have not seen a wind gust in the last hour, but look back to the west and 30 in martinsburg and petersburg, west virginia and it was 44 miles per hour and we're still seeing strong winds across the area. right now clear skies and temperatures are falling, 57 degrees and winds out of the west at 8 miles per hour. the wind will be a factor tonight as you're heading out thi evening make sure you bundle up. temperatures by 7:00 dropping to 54 degrees and breezy around 9:00 and plain chilly at 11:00. temperatures of 49 and the windchill at that time will feel like it's 38, 39 degrees and we have a cold night in store and if you'll be out, make sure you take the jacket and storm team 4 radar continues to be clear and we'll see clear skies all day
6:26 pm
tomorrow and here's what's happening and you can see the clouds to the north. one other thing you notice, we have lake-effect snows over toward portions of pennsylvania and new york and that's the cold air moving across the relatively warm lakes and for us, the clear skies, we'll have plenty of sunshine tomorrow and it will not allow us to warm up that much. 7:00 a.m., 47 degrees by 9:00 and rising to 53 and below average to five degrees and with the winds gusting to 20 to 30 and windchills all day between 40 and 45 degrees and make sure you dress warm tomorrow and make sure you dress those kids warm, too, if they're playing on the playground or maybe if they have a soccer game. it's the coat or scarf as you make your way out saturday. and it's also the coldest weekend day we've seen since april and highs only in the 40s and 47 martinsburg, and 53 in la plata. abundant sunshine, but with that
6:27 pm
wind we could see windchills all day back to the north and west and upper 30s during the afternoon. so make sure you bundle up out on your saturday. the impact forecast, we'll call it a low to moderate impact as we are going to see chilly conditions and sunday a much nicer day and it is going to be a cold start to the day on sunday and temperatures 38 in the city and 60 degrees by sunday afternoon and by 11:00 or 12:00 on sunday it will start to feel better and if you're thinking about raking leaves on saturday, do it on sunday. that would be the better day and monday and tuesday, temperatures back into the 60s, but we could get near 70 and we'll talk about that coming up at 6:45. >> thanks, doug. there is chaos, mass murder and mayhem in paris tonight. there was a terror attack, we know at least 35 people have been killed. the situation is still developing and it is quite fluid and it is horrible. >> attacks in four separate looks in and around paris at a
6:28 pm
very busy time of the night and there is at last report, an active hostage situation inside a theater involving as many as 100 hostages. we will be back with the latest news from paris in a moment.
6:29 pm
6:30 pm
now at 6:30, the deadliest
6:31 pm
violence in france in many years. it has left about three dozen people confirmed dead at a number of locations throughout paris. two police officials say that at least 35 people have been killed in shootings and at least two explosions. >> a police official says about 100 people have been taken hostage at a paris theater. the french president has declared a state of emergency in that country. he has also ordered borders -- the french borders to be closed and he's asked for military reinforcements. chris lawrence has the latest on all of this from our live desk. chris? >> we want to jump right into what is happening now at that concert hall where the american rock band was playing. the latest reports that we are getting is that people are hearing automatic gun fire and several blasts in the area of that music hall. that's where police say dozens of people were being held hostage. police are surrounding the bataclan concert hall and people can hear sirens going all
6:32 pm
through that area. the gun fire started shortly after the french president francois hollande said security forces were launching an assault on one of the sites that had been targeted and we know that is the site where hostages were reported, but some good news to report, as well. we know the american rock band eagles of death metal had been performing there tonight. the drummer's wife is saying the band is safe and everyone on stage was able to get out of there. >> the deputy mayor of paris is saying 15 people were killed in or near that concert hall and we're also getting a little bit of information about what happened near the stadium where a french official is saying at least three people were killed in attacks near the stadium. in the last hour we heard from president barack obama who called france the united states' oldest ally. >> this is a heartbreaking situation and those of us here
6:33 pm
in the united states know what it's like. we've gone through these kinds of episodes ourselves and whenever these kinds of attacks happened we've always been able to count on the french people to stand with us and they've been a counterterrorism partner and we are with them in that same fashion. >> again, the president also called this an outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent citizens and made a point of saying we stand together and as he mentioned here in the united states especially here in our area, a lot of people here in our area know that feeling of confusion and terror where you hear about a report of one attack happened and that's quickly followed by a report of another attack and that feeling of apprehension and not knowing what is going to happen next or if this is under control. again, we're taking a look at some of the live pictures with paramedics and first responders are trying to attend to some of
6:34 pm
the victims there. again, the deputy mayor of paris is saying at least 15 people were killed in that shooting at the bataclan concert hall where the american rock band was performing tonight, but we also know that not only first responders, but now military, french military forces are fanned out in different parts of the city responding to these separate attacks. >> chris lawrence, thanks, chris. we'll be coming back to you with updated information as the hour goes on. this is a map, a flight map of all of the flights that are in and around the area of this terrorist attack in france. we are told that all of the planes are being moved away from paris. if i'm not mistaken there are two airports, major airports in or near paris, one orly and the other de gaulle and this might be -- you might recollect that
6:35 pm
at the time of 9/11 all of the airlines in the united states was shut down. all of the planes in the air ordered to land. in paris right now, all of the flights are being moved away. >> and as we keep saying, the situation in paris is very fluid and as we get more information we will bring it to you right away, but we'll cover local news now. howard university security remains heightened due to threats, the likes of which that campus has never seen before. the issue has students and leaders focused on racism rected at their university and elsewhere. news 4's meagan fitzgerald joins us live from the campus of howard. >> doreen, officials here on the campus of howard university tell us that the president is planning on taking a leadership role as itelates to race relations on college campuses across the country. we are told this plan involved the campus president.
6:36 pm
>> reporter: howard university has been known for its leadership. >> stand up in solidarity for the courageousness. >> reporter: which is why when an online post threatened to cause harm to students on campus they didn't stand inside. they led protests and rallies on campus to unite each other. >> liberation! >> reporter: and to stand with students at the university of missouri, yale and others who are speaking out against racial tension on campuses. >> we pride ourselves on it and it's great that we are also leading this. >> reporter: president wayne frederick is taking on a leadership role, as well. he's creating a race summit where he'll invite college presidents from all over the country. they'll discuss ways of addressing social justice issues on campuses and one of the topics will be race relations. >> these are after education and life chances. dr. greg carr is at the department of afro-american
6:37 pm
studies and he leads peaceful demonstrations and leadership and they can significantly help to bring about change. >> that's an argument about human justice and what's right and our students are standing for that. >> now the president's staff has told us that they've started to receive calls from interested universities from around the country already and they tell us they are still in the beginning stages of planning. back to you. >> meagan fitzgerald reporting from howard. once again, let's go back to live pictures from paris. we are seeing lots of police activity and lots of emergency medical activity, but we are not yet sure what is going on. we believe this may be the scene outside that theater where some 100 hostages were reported -- were reportedly being held and we just heard chris lawrence talk about reports of automatic gun fire heard and police surrounding the area. we aren't sure that that is what we are seeing here.
6:38 pm
we do know that there is still very much live activity going on in paris. we know that the mayor has told people to stay home and the french president has declared a state of emergency. >> in fact, has closed the borders to his country. we'll be back with more.
6:39 pm
6:40 pm
local news now, police in montgomery county believe they have caught the people who have been stealing credit cards from women's purses. a couple from germantown, maryland, has been charged. police say they targeted people at the grocery store where they work, but one of that couple tells our mark segraves that the evidence is wrong. he didn't do it. >> reporter: after police released surveillance photos of the couple using the stolen credit cards several calls came in identifying the suspects. >> that is not us. >> reporter: according to police, three victims had their
6:41 pm
credit cards stolen while shopping at this trader joe's on rockville pike where raymond clayborn works. >> clayborn insists this is a case of mistaken identity. >> i work at this place. they had that same picture posted at my job where i was working at every day. nobody at my job said anything. >> when police searched clayborn's home they recovered a table and two lamps they said were purchased using one of the stolen credit cards. >> a dining room table and two lamps that we had in storage for two years. we just moved into this house, eight, nine months ago. >> they said they found stuff that you bought with the stolen credit cards. >> there's foe proof of that and when they try to match things up we didn't steal anything and those are things that we bought with our hard-earned money. >> he is still working at that trader joe's and is working to clear his and his wife's names. mark segraves, news 4. back now to live pictures of
6:42 pm
paris. this is the scene outside that theater in paris where we believe the concert hall and there was an american band giving a concert and we are seeing people coming out on stretchers. we had heard earlier that police had surrounded the place and might be going in. we don't know exactly what has happened there. all we can share with you is what we are seeing and what you are seeing with us on these live pictures. it's a -- a theater, concert hall and we were told at one point that there were 100 people being held hostage. that's about all we know for sure at this point. still a developing situation still a developing situation and we'll stay on top of

6:45 pm
it is awful what is happening in paris. four different locations where there have either been shootings or explosions. we are told that the official death toll so far stands at 35 people. we are also told that there are probably about 100 people inside the bataclan theater where an american band was performing at the time. we are told those band members are safe, by the way. a fluid situation as we have noted before. the french president has closed the borders.
6:46 pm
the airlines are all being sent away from french airports, and we are seeing now people taken out of and put into ambulances, some of the many casualties from those terrorist attacks in paris still under way. and this deadly and obviously, very well-coordinated attack in paris is raising security concerns worldwide. our jackie bensen is outside the french embassy in northwest d.c. right now. what's happening there, jackie? >> reporter: well, dear een, news 4 has learned there is a heightened security alert at the embassy. this d.c. police cruiser pulled up. the officer got out and went over to speak with the security personnel at the entrance to the french embassy cl, as you can see, by the front gates there is a very, very secure facility. we can tell you there is a public event going on there tonight and people have been passing through security to get in there, but it is obvious, not
6:47 pm
something that is normally here is that this d.c. police cruiser and the coordination with local authorities and we've been in touch this evening with the d.c. office of homeland security and various police departments in the district of columbia. what we are being told by all of them is that we have a heightened alert and they're being extra vigilant, but nothing very visible and nothing extra visible that will be seen right now. live in the northwest, jackie bensen, news 4. >> we appreciate it. >> our chris lawrence has been covering this awful story in paris all afternoon and we understand you've got some new information about what's happening in paris and in terms of security there. >> especially, doreen in terms of the response and how people are handling it. it would really resonate with a lot of people here who think about how prepared our area would be to deal with something like this. france has just instituted a
6:48 pm
mandatory curfew. this is the first time they've done that since the 1940s. the mayor of paris has been telling millions of residents do not leave home, but we know this was a friday night, public transportation has been completely disrupted and the bus routes have been disrupted by the activity and the metro stations are now closed. we just learn ed thed that fren has reported that taxi drivers have turned off their meters and they are taking people home for free tonight and there is a movement on social media with the #portovert and it means open door in france and it's a policy of businesses that means if you come here, you can safely stay with me until all of this is taken care of. we are also hearing or seeing a
