morning. light rain becoming more and more likely by later on this afternoon. by the time all is said and done for this event, most places a half an inch of rain to an inch but it will come down fast and furious this morning. more impact on your commute coming up in ten minutes. for now i hear this morning's commute is getting tougher and tougher by the minute. >> it is. another problem popping up here and there. 270 southbound at buckeystown pike. slow going 30 miles per hour as you're passing that this morning. g.w. parkway southbound after the 14th street bridge, still have that crash here. as well, northbound branch avenue at the belle way, we are sending choppers to that crash here in the next couple of minutes. should be there. you have a couple of slowdowns i wanted to mention. in bound 50 at b.w. parkway and 295 south at east capitol. travel times in ten minutes. a suspected terrorist is dead and the hunt for another is happening right now in france.

news 4's angie goff following the breaking news from the live desk. angie. >> a lot happening in the last hour, aaron. new numbers in france. seven people we're told arrested following a lot of gunfire and explosions. taking you live to the scene right now. this is just north of paris where a six-hour standoff with a suspected terrorist just ended. we are told that two people were killed. this includes a suicide bomber who blew herself up as police zeroed in. also getting news that five police officers were injured. the main target of all of this, finding this man, ab dem mohammed abou. he is believed to be the master mind behind the paris attacks. no word yet if he is among the seven that were captured this morning. we do know others including children were escorted from the scene. more as we get it. back to you. >> thanks, angie. new information just in on one of the two flights diverted on their way to paris.

one of them diverted to salt lake city after takeoff from l.a.x. the other left dulles international airport and was diverted to nova scotia. kristen wright is live at dulles with what happened. kristen? >> reporter: hey, good morning. the airport in nova scotia tweeting out a couple of hours ago that all passengers are in hotels and are safe. those are the passengers that left here from dulles to paris yesterday. also new, our sister station in salt lake city, a reporter there tweeting out three hours ago that the air france flight that left from los angeles that was diverted to salt lake city has departed from salt lake city bound for paris -- headed to paris. same situation happened with both flights, the air france flight that left l.a.x. for paris made an emergency landing in salt lake city last night. 400 some odd people on board. authorities expected that plane, the passengers, the luggage,

nothing was found. flight 55, meanwhile, bound for paris from dulles was diverted to nova scotia last night after someone called in a bomb threat. after takeoff all 200 passengers got off at the airport there. police dogs trained in detecting explosives checked out the plane. the passengers were checked out and nothing was found. the fbi telling nbc news that they have nothing to suggest that either threat was credible. of course, this morning authorities both in canada and the u.s. working to figure out exactly where those threats came from. back to you. >> thank you, kristen. homeland security security secretary jeh johnson will brief d.c. lawmakers today. the fbi is in overdrive this morning. agents are paying special attention to about 800 names on the terror watch list, all of them linked to syria. the fbi already started intensifying surveillance on

about 50 known terror suspects already in the u.s. later today on capitol hill secretary of state john kerry, cia director john brennan will brief lawmakers on the paris attacks and the threats to the u.s. we expect two soeparate discussions. d.c. delegate eleanor holmes norton will be part of a classified national security briefing tonight. she says authorities have assured her that they are taking all the necessary precautions. this especially in light of the specific threat made to d.c. earlier this week. a note of caution that isis also spreads terror by naming specific cities in its threats. now as this story develops of course we're going to keep sending new information out to our nbc washington app. make sure you have it with you to be sure to learn the latest developments. developing in washington college right now, classes are canceled today as police search for a student who's believed to

have a gun. 19-year-old jacob marberger is a sophomore. his parents say he took a gun from their home over the weekend and disappeared. they're asking students to leave campus completely and go home. the decision on whether to reopen will be considered on a day-to-day basis. a 16-year-old d.c. girl is headed back home after surviving six days alone in the mountains of tennessee. search crews rescued ava zekeiel last week. she went missing last wednesday while hiking with classmates from her boarding school. metro preparing to introduce the new leader. they'll introduce paul wedefeld as the new general manager tomorrow. all that's left is a formal vote and a final contract will need to be approved. wedefeld met with the virginia and d.c. leaders yesterday. they were impressed with his ability to lead and his background in transit and aviation.

right now hundreds of thousands are without power. storms pounded the state overnight bringing heavy rains and strong winds. three people died after trees fell on their cars. schools are closed because of

wind damages. the heavy rain is expected to pick back up tonight. the storms that will bring us rain in a few hours already causing damage in the south. take a look. more than 14,000 people in the dark in tennessee after winds knocked down trees and power lines. in arkansas winds brought down part of the roof at a downtown business. some people say they saw a big cloud filled with lightning pass through before all of those bricks fell. no one was hurt. you've got to think with all of that stuff happening out west of us, that some of that has to come here. >> right. >> it has to be that way. >> storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell is tracking the path of all of that weather heading our way. chuck, what is going on. >> a plus for you today, aaron, in science class. all of that is coming our way. there's the band of heavy rain extending from western kentucky down to the gulf coast.

6:16 now. breaking news. a seven hour standoff is over with. two terror suspects are dead in france. you're looking at live pictures from saint-denis where all of this took place. police were searching for the master mind in last week's attack in paris. they stormed an apartment building when the people inside started fighting back. one woman detonated an explosive vest and died. five police officers were hurt. it's not clear whether the mastermind was inside or what's happened to him if he was. security officials in germany and belgium are urging that everything is safe right now. soccer games in both countries were stopped last night over

security concerns. you're looking at the game in belgium which was actually canceled before it even started. however, in germany thousands of people were asked to evacuate. no one was arrested. no explosives were ever found there. closer to home, police and officials in washington are taking extra steps and taking the threats extremely seriously. a couple of dc area schools canceled field trips yesterday. new security measures started last night in college park at the maryland/georgetown game. some people along the national mall as well told us they're not concerned. police chief cathy lanier said it's not the time to take chances. >> the fact that there are people that might take that action based on seeing that video, we have to take all of that seriously. >> now another example of heightened security, the report of a suspicious package stopped a vre train. police gave the all clear later. heightened security at our

airports as many of us make plans to travel. adam todd went to reagan national airport to see how it might affect you. he spoke with jackpoter, the he of the airport authority. he said expect crowded terminals but business as usual with an extra sense of awareness. we are seeing the impact of heightened security at sporting events in virginia. virginia tech said it's increasing security for this weekend's game. last week's attacks in paris killed 129 people. one of virginia tech's vice presidents said the school is focused on students and community safety because of the attacks. she also said it shouldn't have a major impact on fans. virginia tech plays north carolina saturday at noon. new reports this morning that a meeting over a proposed mosque in virginia got ugly last night. they said, quote, every muslim is a terrorist. the meeting was being held to discuss plans to build an 8,000 square foot mosque at the corner

of old plank road. the mosque would move from its current location. coming up in 15 minutes, we're going to take a closer look at the growing tensions involving refugees from syria, that includes how virginians feel about the situation and their governor refuses to stop the arrival. 6:19 now. a woman was arrested on a flight from london to boston yesterday after trying to open the exit door mid flight. she was taken off the british airways flight by police after it landed in boston. passengers say the woman ran down the aisle of the plane during the flight. six crew members held the woman down, put handcuffs on her and tied her into the seat. police say she was drunk. 6:19 your time now. the field of republican presidential candidates is dwindling. louisiana governor bobby jindal has dropped out. on twitter he thanked his supporters saying, it's been an incredible honor to run for president in this great country. he raised little money and never made it onto the main debate

stages. he refuses to support donald trump but told nbc news he will back the republican nominee. there are 14 candidates left. we have new numbers from a new study about rape on college campuses. these numbers may alarm you. researchers at brown university say 15% of women are raped while drunk or high during their first year of school. scientists talked to 500 college freshmen. they said the ones who were rape victims before they started school were more likely to be assaulted again. police in the district need your help after a deadly shooting in northeast. they were called to new york avenue around 10:30 yesterday morning where they found a man shot outside of a motel. he had been shot several times. he later died at the hospital. police have not released the name of the victim. there is a 25,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest. today the university of maryland at college pa will dedicate a new monument in honor of frederick douglas. the school will officially name a popular gathering space for

that is the sound of an explosion just hours ago during the standoff in -- north of paris. not clear just yet if that was the moment a woman detonated a suicide vest and died. we're still working to find out more about the other suspect who was killed in that raid. police are targeting ab dem hamid abel. we don't know whether he was inside the building. however, officials say the people inside attacked just as the raid began. it lasted so long. seven hours. one person was believed to be hold up in the apartment. five police officers were hurt. we also just learned that president obama has been briefed on the situation. we'll keep you posted as we learn more information.

right now. however, france said it destroyed two isis command centers and several other buildings. 6:33 now. a policy fight on capitol hill after the attacks in paris. president obama spoke overnight in the philippines and for the second time this week he made his position on welcoming refugees clear. congress said it's hearing his message but not all lawmakers agree with it. >> individuals say that we should have a religious sect and that only christians, proven christians should be there. that's offensive and contrary to american values. >> as soon as tomorrow capitol hill could vote on a bill placing restrictions on refugees from iraq and syria. how do you feel about accepting refugees from iraq and syria? we have the results of a new poll from the university of mary washington. it shows most virginians are not in favor of welcoming refugees. 40% of the people who responded say they strongly oppose resettlement plans. university researchers conducted

the poll before last week's terror in paris. 6:34 your time right now. today we're learning the details of a multi-million dollar deal to build up the old walter reed campus in the district. live in northwest with the ground breaking that's going to kick off the redevelopment. derrick? >> reporter: good morning again, aaron. we're at the walter reed campus. this building was rendered obsolete after the buildings moved to bethesda. this will soon be the site of a new fire house. take a look at an artist's rendering. city officials will break ground later today on the facility. it will replace the fire house in the 5700 block of georgia avenue, which is about 100 years old. look at the plans of the campus. the city has purchased 66 acres

of 110 acres that exist over here. they paid $24.5 million for it. it will be developed in the 3.1 million square feet of residential office and retail space with about 2100 housing units, some of those will be affordable housing. we'll learn more about that later on today when the ground breaking happens right here. we are live on georgia avenue in northwest. derrick ward, news 4. starting this morning, a four-day conference on u.s. drug laws and legalization of marijuana. a group called the drug policy alliance plans to lobby congress. the group wants lawmakers to make it easier for states to change marijuana laws. d.c. legalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana earlier this year. the group also wants lesser penalties for people convicted of nonviolent drug offenses. fairfax county police are moving forward with plans to explore using body cameras in the field. the cameras are one of 142 recommendations to establish

greater accountability and transparency among the police department. the board voted to further pursue all 142 of those recommendations. the board expects to present a pilot program on the cameras in the next few weeks. a quick thinking victim has turned the tables on a man he says who flashed him. he snapped a picture of a man peeping through the window. the suspect walked up to the man's door, made sexual gestures and exposed himself. this happened in the 7200 block of whispering oaks way in gaithersburg. he was wearing a navy blue jacket with the words woodstock student. call police if you have any information. prince william county police arrested and charged a man suspected in three peeping tom incidents. all three times investigators say richard rodriguez dressed up as a woman. on monday a woman said she caught him spying on her in the women's restroom. she said he put a bag under her stall. police are connecting him to similar incidents at the mall and at a woodbridge walmart. college of maryland taking

dramatic scene overnight in a paris suburb as police surround an apartment building where a potential terror suspect may have been staying. that siege ended in the last hour. we are also tracking developments involving two air france flights that were forced to divert. right now one of those flights is back in the air. news 4's kristen wright is tracking the developments of that flight and the one that took off from dulles international airport. but we begin with angie goff at the live desk with more on that standoff.

angie? >> good morning, eun and aaron. here's the latest out of france. we are following a lot of gunfire and explosion in a raid to find the mastermind behind last week's terror attacks. live at the scene north of paris where seven suspected terrorists were arrested overnight. two people we're told were killed including a suicide bomber who blew herself up. now the six-hour standoff as you mentioned which just ended in the last hour was an operation that was targeting this man, abdelhamid abaaoud, the suspected master mind of the paris attack. it ended and president obama has already been briefed this morning. five police officers are recovering from injuries also. no word on what condition they are in. at this hour the one thing that is still unclear is whether or not police got him. more on the developing story. 6:46. developments this morning as air france diverts two planes headed to paris, one of them diverted to salt lake city after taking

off from lax. the other left dulles airport and was diverted to nova scotia. picking up with news 4's kristen wright live at dulles. kristen? >> reporter: hey, good morning. we just got word from air france that those passengers who left dulles bound for paris last night and were diverted to canada will not be departing nova scotia until this evening due to crew flight time regulations. all right. a little trouble with kristen's signal there from dulles. we can tell you she was saying the flight was diverted to nova skoegs sha. the passengers were taken off and put in hotel rooms overnight. as we understand it, there were no problems found on the plane and we'll hear more about the next steps as the morning progresses. 6:47 our time right now. d.c. lawmakers should get a briefing from homeland security security secretary jeh johnson today. security is tightening after the recent threats against the district. the fbi is in overdrive this

latest. developing at washington college in maryland this morning, administrators have evacuated the campus because of a threat. classes are canceled for a third day today. police are searching for a student they believe has a gun. 19-year-old jacob marberger is a sophomore. his parents say he took a gun from their home over the weekend and disappeared. >> he had an upcoming honor board case. he got kicked out of his fraternity, had to rehouse into another facility. on that sunday night before he left he was confronted by a student government association about his affiliation with them. >> now the college is asking students to leave campus completely, to go home. a decision on when to reopen will be considered on a day-to-day basis. an 8-year-old boy is dead after a violent crash in prince gorges county. he was one of four children critically hurt following this crash in chillam earlier this month. the car he was riding in crashed into another car as it was
