police car, a taxi and an suv. this happened just after midnight in northeast. you are looking at some video of it. news 4's derrick ward is following developments live at h and 8th street. what have you learned, derek? >> reporter: well, there are a lot of pieces that they have to deal with here, quite literally. you can see the scene. here is a part of the police car, actually a part of the taxicab and what's left of the storefront. but take a look at the scene earlier, it was about 12:15 we are told when this had accident happened at the intersection of h and 8th northeast. questions remain about whether the police car was responding with its emergency lights and siren or whether it was actually on a call. we do hear about another accident a short distance away, possibly a hit and run. whether this is what -- or how this incident started we don't know. we do know five people were injured, all of those injuries are described as minor, everyone suspected to pull through, now it is just about the

investigation and the reclaiming of this storefront. we are told that this business had been out of business or close to being out of business but nonetheless still significant damage from this overnight accident. we are live in northeast, derrick ward, news 4. back to you. we now want to move it over to the weather and the midwest where they are getting slammed with snow. up to a foot has fallen across cedar falls in iowa, 6 to 10 inches are expected in the chicago area and we just checked and there are a few flight canceldaa1jjr' and out of dulles international and reagan national airports. expectd to continue through the would he cannend. >> none of that white stuff expected here. we, though, are feeling the freeze this morning. that's for sure. >> i know, but we are going to get our first real taste of winter, isn't that right, tom. >> yeah, by monday morning down right frigid. we started off subfreezing this morning. those flight cancellations are mainly in and out of chicago and detroit later today and part of st. louis, too.

part of the day will be delayed there, too, with flights coming and going as that snowstorm hits there, we just have cold weather here, it's down near freezing now, getting out of the 20s where we were earlier in morning, now into the low 30s, much of maryland and virginia. out in west virginia, western maryland still a little sbloe freezing there, right around the immediate suburbs and inside the beltway we are right around 40, low 40s right around the bay. don't have any rain or snow here locally but there is that snow moving through ohio, indiana into kentucky and it is all rain but north all snow, the area in white around chicago no you moving into southern michigan. a little bit of a breeze in morning, live view from our camera overlooking union station, cold morning, chilly afternoon then a dry pattern setting up for the thanksgiving week. we are following breaking news. belgium's terror alert raised to its maximum level. >> and the prime minister told reporters this morning the threat there similar to what happened in paris, terrorists

potentially targeting shopping centers, large gatherings, public transportation systems. heavily armed soldiers and police are patrolling key locations and intersections in the city at this hour. all the metro stations there are closed until tomorrow afternoon and all major events have been called off. now, all of this comes one week after those horrific attacks in paris. this morning we're learning turkish authorities arrested three people with suspected isis ties. they are believed to be connected to the attacks in france. security followed one of the men as he checked into a luxury hotel in turkey. they detained him along with two other syrian suspects, all three we can tell you are being held in jail. around here in response to those attacks terps fans headed to college park will notice more security at today's football game against indiana university. fans can expect to see more k-9 dogs and uniformed officers, backpacks will not be allowed and fans can expect to go through some strict security. all new in morning, we're

learning about a fairfax county man seriously hurt in an early morning house fire. the victim called 911 around 4:30 when he couldn't get out. crews were able to rescue the man as well as his dog, the dog was taken to the man mall hospital, expected to be okay, officials say the fire was smoky but no i think maar damage. all the heightened security we've been telling you about comes after an extremist group overtook a hotel in the west african country of mali. 20 people killed in that capital city, terrorists held more than 100 people captive. about a dozen americans were among those rescued at the radisson hotel. a former al qaeda commander is claiming responsibility. mali's government is in a state of emergency and has declared three days of mourning. and one of those victims is 41 why he recalled anita ashok datar. she is from takoma park, maryland. >> she was inside the radisson when terrorists stormed in, as newsq0á4's jackie bensen explai datar was there on a mission to help others while her life was

cut short. >> reporter: speaking during an official trip to mall sla president obama addressed the loss of life. >> on behalf of the american people i want to extend our deepest condolences to the people of mali and the victims' families, including at least one american. these were innocent people who had everything to live for and they will be remembered for the joy and love that they brought to the world. >> the grieving friend here in takoma park read a statement authorized by the family. >> we are devastated by the loss of our wonderful daughter who was doing the work that she loves. we have no further comment at this time and ask that you respect our privacy. >> reporter: news that the hostage situation in mali had claimed the life of an american citizen turned to shock waves in d.c.'s public health nonprofit community. anita datar was a board member of a nonprofit working to connect women in underdeveloped countries to quality healthcare services. her family in new jersey issued a statement that says in part we

are devastated that anita is gone. it's unbelievable to us that she has been killed in this senseless act of violence and terrorism. anita was one of the kindest and most generous people we know. reaction to the tragedy in mali also from that country's ambassador to the u.s. denouncing the violence and those responsible. >> islam is peace. islam is peace, mali is maybe 85, maybe 90, maybe 95% of muslims that is peaceful muslims and what we want is american people to know that, to understand that and not make any confusion between the jihadists and the muslims. >> jackie bensen reporting there. a prince georges county church wants your help to take guns off the streets today. the first baptist church of glenarden is working with police for a gift cards for guns program. people can turn in guns and receive gift cards ranging from $50 to $150.

this was the chaotic scene at a high school football game in miami. it ended early after gunshots sent players and coaches doing what you see right there, running and ducking for cover. accordingky to the miami herald less than three minutes were left in the game while shots rang out. no reported injuries. new cases ofkk e.coli have been linked to e coally, california, new york and ohio, the majority of the illnesses have been in oregon and washington state. most of those restaurants have reopened, so far 45 people have been affected and 16 had to go to the hospital. the cdc is trying to figure out the specific food linked to the

a 16-year-old facing life in prison for killing a cop in southern california. abel diaz is charged as an adult. police say he murdered downie police officer ricardo galvez during an attempted robbery. he was shot inside his car in the police parking lot. the 29-year-old had just finished his shift on wednesday night. two other suspects are expected to be charged on monday. in new york a woman nine months pregnant is stabbed to death. her baby surgically removed by the killer. this all happened after police say she got into a fight with

coming up tomorrow on "meet the press" chuck todd going to be taking a closer look on how the reacting to the isis threat. a passenger on the united airlines flight that chris christie was on was removed before takeoff. the plane was headed from san francisco to boston yesterday morning. police say that the passenger was taking pictures of the crew with his cellphone. they also spotted a picture of a cellphone that looked like it was rigged with wires. the passenger was removed and everybody was rescreened. police found the man had as no criminal history and made no threats. i love this story happening today. more than two dozen foster children going to enter permanent homes this weekend. today is the 29th annual adoption day at superior court in the district. each child and his or her family will be introduced and a judge will then sign their final adoption decree. the event is designed to encourage residents to consider adopting or fostering a child.mk
