developing right now at 6:00, gunfire erupts in adams morgan. we are live with what we're learning about the victim. >> she was the kind of person that everyone was drawn to. she was very smart. >> for the first time, we are hearing a friend share her pain about the local woman killed in the mali terror attack. and breaking news, flames break out of one of the tallest buildings in the country. >> news4 at 6:00 starts now. we begin with a developing story. somebody shot in busy adams morgan this afternoon. news4's darcy spencer is live with the shooting investigation. darcy, what are you hearing? >> reporter: well, erika, the investigation is centering on the house here behind me on belmont road just off 18th

street. as you mentioned, near the busy night life area. it happened in broad daylight where many neighbors feel safe. the shooting around 3:30 this afternoon off 18th street in between columbia road. police confirm a man was shot and he was listed as unconscious. homicide detectives were called to the scene. we don't know if the man is still alive, even if he was transported to the hospital. at this point, police are not telling us whether the shooting happened outside or inside the house. online real estate websites list this as a multifamily building, worth nearly $2 million. let's hear from one woman who lives near the area. >> i definitely live in an area where night life is prevalent. it's not something i'm concerned about because i'm not part of it. if it's something happening midday on my street, that's something i'm concerned about safety wise. >> reporter: you can see that the investigation is continuing

here on belmont road. police at this point have not released any suspect information. back to you, erika. >> thank you, darcy. we now want to go to breaking news out of chicago, the city's iconic john hancock building caught fire this afternoon. flames broke out on the 50th floor of this 100 story building. fire was seen shooting through the window of the floor. one person was injured. right now the hancock tower staff is not evacuating the building. but building security is working to get everybody away from the effected floors. and right now on storm team 4 radar, tracking a line of rain to our west. as this continues to make its way toward our area, it's going to fall apart. it will just bring us for the most part some clouds overnight tonight and during the morning hours tomorrow. so here's your planner right now. we're at 51 degrees, heading out this evening. you'll still want the warmer coat, 9:00, temperature around 49.

waking up tomorrow morning, 6:00 a.m., temperature of 40. most of us try, a small chance of a sprinkle or two. east of i-95 by 8:00 a.m., more clouds around d.c. and areas to the east. more sun if you're in areas to the west, like leesburg, frederick and loudoun county. as we move into the afternoon hours, the winds pick up and overall temps are cooler than today. i'll let you know how cold it will feel tomorrow afternoon when you factor in the winds in my full forecast in about ten minutes, erika. >> thanks, amelia. right now the city of brussels is on lockdown. many bars closed, the subway shut down and heavily armed police roaming the streets, all because of warnings of a, quote, imminent paris-style terror attack in the belgian capital. officials raised the threat alert for the city to its high left yefl. at least one paris attacker crossed into belgium the morning after the attacks. police still haven't found him. the security situation will be reassessed tomorrow.

condolences pouring in as friends and loved ones remember the woman from takoma park killed in the terror attacks in mali. anita datar's family say they are devastated, that she is gone. she was one of 19 people killed friday when grenade-throwing gunmen stormed the radisson blu hotel. two of the islamic extremists were killed in the siege. datar was a public health expert working for an international development firm here in d.c. she grew up in new jersey. >> since we went to high school together, i run our facebook page for our high school class. so we're all obviously in shock. and we're trying to organize anything we can to help her family or to remember her. >> datar leaves behind a 7-year-old son. her family says she died doing what she loved, working to promote education, health care and tolerance. security was tight at bird stadium this afternoon before the university of maryland

football game. these are some pictures of the security lines after the game had already started. agents were checking and tagging any bags that entered the stadium, which slowed things down a lot. you'll see highlights from the game later in sports. five people, including two d.c. police officers had to go to the hospital after an early-morning crash. a police cruiser flew into that building you see there. two other vehicles and a taxi also involved. the crash happened just after midnight near eighth and 8 streets northeast. police say everybody is expected to be okay. it's not clear what led up to that crash. those express lanes on 95 in the beltway in virginia could soon be coming to 395, as well. virginia's transportation secretary says he wants to extend the lanes all the way to the d.c. line. here's a look at where the new lanes would go. it's the part of 395 that's currently in blue, right now this stretch of road has hov lanes in it. officials want to add tolls to the road, which would change,

depending on traffic volume. they also want to expand the road to three lanes. and we've got more details on how the lanes work and what's next for the project on the nbc washington app. just search express lanes. pure panic at a high school football game. find out what had players and fans running for cover. and as the debate over syrian refugees rages on, these protesters wanted to make sure their voices were heard.

over 300 guns are off the streets right now, thanks to the gift cards for guns event in maryland. you're looking at some of what prince george's county police recovered today. people brought their guns to the first baptist church. in return, they got gift cards worth $50 to $150 depending on the type of gun. this is part of the police department's initiative to cut back on gun violence. people were able to turn in the guns unanimously. after the terror attacks in paris, there are new calls not to accept syrian refugees into the u.s. maryland governor larry hogan is among the governors not wanting to accept the refugees. his words sparked a protest outside the white house today. >> stop the hate! >> holding signs that read "refugees welcome" the group called on leaders to allow the

refugees in. and they are speaking out against those who make a link between the refugees and terrorist attacks. >> there is a tie that they're making with the terrorist actions, even though there has not been one refugee that has come into america that has been convicted of terrorist action. >> the group is also asking people to contact their elected officials and ask them to accept syrian refugees. some of you enjoyed the 18th annual montgomery county thanksgiving parade in silver spring today. because of the chilly forecast tomorrow, amelia says maybe it's a good day to stay indoors. that is, inside the grocery stores, to maybe get some of that thanksgiving day shopping done. we'll take a look at your turkey day forecast, coming up. a special welcome home to a new resident in

with residents saying hello and banking officials hand you the keys to your new home. all that's appropriate. this isn't just your average homecoming. this is about a special effort to get that house habitable and to get a wounded warrior into it. >> how do you feel today? >> overwhelmed. >> reporter: army veteran jeremy horsily was wounded by an ied. his determination to serve only grew longer. he helped other returning vets adjust. it's his turn. >> the neighbor hood is great so to have an opportunity like this is amazing. >> it's wonderful. and i know for jeremy it's going to be very special in a week or two when his family joins him and those children. >> reporter: turning this formerly vacant house into a dream home could have been a nightmare, were it not for an army of volunteers. >> the whole basement was mold. we replaced probably 40 sheets of sheetrock, did the lighting. >> it's a privilege for us to do that. in some ways, it seems very

small, given their service to the country. >> reporter: horsily's parents, it's a dream come true as well. it means their virginia-born family won't be quite as spread out any more. >> they're on the east coast now, not the west coast. >> reporter: in bowie, derrick ward, news4. scary moments on a friday night high school football game. that at a high school football game in miami. gunshots outside the stadium parked panic inside. somebody shot this cell phone video of the chaotic scene as the players ran off the field and people in the stands ran for cover. of course, we just mentioned gunshots outside the stadium. this happened on the campus of miami dade college. fo fortunately, nobody was hurt. winter has come to iowa. people there saw their first winter storm of the season. snow blanketed the state last night, and this morning the central part of the state saw between 4 and 8 inches of snow. and more than a foot of snow fell in northern iowa.

the good news for folks there, warmer weather is in the forecast. and even though that's iowa, that somehow has an impact on us here, right? >> yeah, exactly. so when i showed you the radar, the storm team 4 radar tracking that line of rain. it's the same system as it moves here. the rain is going to fall apart and bring us clouds. but more importantly, it will have an impact on our temperatures. it's cold tomorrow, and breezy by the afternoon. so when you factor in the winds, it adds that additional chill. temperatures continue to tumble on monday. monday morning downright frigid. as we look to thanksgiving, we start to warm up. and right now it's looking like really nice weather for thanksgiving. wait until you see the seven-day forecast. overall, you'll like it. our next chance of rain is next saturday. tomorrow, despite the chill, the weather really having a low impact on your day. we'll start off with some clouds, finish with sun. it will be blustery later in the day so you do want to locate that warmer coat if you haven't already done so.

but you'll need the sunglasses as well. right now at 51 degrees. winds out of the southeast at 12 miles per hour. so a bit breezy in spots overnight tonight. again, really noticing the winds from around the midday and afternoon hours. so here's your hour by hour forecast for your sunday. 7:00 a.m., the temperature around 44 degrees. more clouds around washington and areas to the east of i-95. further to the west, more sun. we're noticing the wind by noon with a temperature of 48. clouds it continue to break up as we head on into the afternoon hours. so 3:00 our high temperature 50 degrees. but it will feel more like 40 when you factor in gusts up to about 25 to even 30 miles per hour. you might want the wind breaker. 7:00, winds start to diminish, but still breezy. and it turns cold as skies are clear and dry air over our area. 7:00 p.m., a temperature of 43. temperatures continue to tumble. and this is monday morning as we head back to work and school a few days before the thanksgiving holiday begins.

30 in washington. that's not so bad when you compare to the suburbs. 24 in gaithersburg. 23 in manassas and 25 in leesburg. widespread freezing conditions on monday morning. and we only warm to a high of 45 degrees. however, it's sun-filled and dry. after monday, we start to warm up. tuesday, a high of 51. wednesday, a high of 56. still plenty of sun. and if you're planning on traveling wednesday in the mid atlantic, looking really nice. temperatures right on track for this time of year. in fact, for the most part, pretty quiet travel weather if you're heading down to the carolinas, georgia, florida. a little bit cool there. but the weather not impacting travel. the chance of showers in the middle part of the country. and tracking some snow out west, and in areas of montana and parts of the dakotas, as well. now on thursday, thanksgiving, look at this. the high of 60 degrees. we continue to warm on friday. a high of 62. saturday, there's that chance of rain. mainly during the morning and midday hours right now. otherwise, it's breezy and

cooler. and that will set us up, erika, for a chilly but dry sunday. next sunday, a high temperature around 40 degrees. >> all right. thanks, amelia. nbc 4 has a long-standing commitment to promoting adoption. today more than two dozen foster children enter permanent homes at the 29th annual adoption day in the district. news4's barbara harrison was there to introduce each child and their new family as a judge signed the paperwork at superior court. barbara talked to one adoptee who has been looking for a family since he was 9 years old. today he finally has somebody to call mom. >> probably outside of being born, it's one of the best days of my life so far. >> it is overall so much more rich and joyous having him in my life. it is great. and it brings tears to my eyes talking about it. i am so proud of him. >> and while the children today now have loving homes, there are plenty of other children who are not that lucky. you can learn more about how to

michigan wins 28-16. of expect to see a heated battle at point guard tonight with the pistons playing against the washington wizards. detroit point guard reggie jackson received a $5 million contract this past summer. sounds great, right? not in the eyes of john wall. when the wizards point guard got wind of the deal, he told reporters, quote, people talk about me getting $80 million but now people get $85 million who have not made an all star team. john has made two all-star teams and won the slam dunk contest in 2014. jackson goes head-to-head for the first time since comments were made. expect sparks to fly in detroit. >> right now we don't worry about what they're going to do. we just play it our way. if the defense wants to pack it, we've got to make the pass and knock down some shots. we've got to attack. i'm not too worried about what they're doing. i always worry about what we're going to do. >> you can catch the wizards in
