of people are rushing off to their holiday destinations and we've got you covered all week long on news 4 and the nbc washington app. >> we just checked and crews did clear a bad accident on route 50 heading out of town today. state police say a vehicle sped off the highway at as vista road and struck a tree. it happened this afternoon. the victim was rushed to the hospital. the u.s. is in total solidarity with france, that is the message president obama delivered to francois hollande during his visit to the white house today. this visit is part of a whirlwind tour for france's president as he tries to strengthen the coalition going after isis. tomorrow he travels to germany then heads to russia on thursday. president obama says the only way russia can play a role is if it shifts focus from supporting bashar al assad to fighting isis. and new out of paris, nbc news learned the ringleader of

the attacks earlier this month returned to several of the scenes later that same night. a prosecutor says cell phone records show he stopped by the restaurant where gunmen opened fire and went to the concert venue where 89 people were killed. he made the return visits even as police swarmed the area investigating. world war iii was trending on twittered to after turkish forces shut down a russian fighter jet near the syrian border. vladimir putin called it a stab in the back. u.s. defense officials now say the plane was in turkish airspace for a matter of seconds before turkish fighters took it down. a russian pilot died and another person was killed during a rescue attempt. turkey says it warned ruf eed r many times before firing. nato is meeting on the issue. president obama says his primary goal is to prevent an escalation of tensions between two countries. virginia's governor

announced a new wide-ranging plan today to improve travel from stafford to the d.c. line including the bottleneck mess on i-395. terry mcauliffe is asking the state to extend the express lanes north to the d.c. line. he also wants to extend the lines on i-95 at the southern end in stafford county for two miles. a study released yesterday ranked a stretch of 395 in arlington as the nation's worst traffic trouble spot. the express lane rees remain fr for three or more. construction will start in two years. that area could be one of the choke points later this evening and the next 48 hours as hundreds of thousands from our region are expected to hit the roads for thanksgiving. what can you expect? doug and veronica have a look at the forecast. first, let's go to transportation reporter adam tuss live right now. >> reporter: they're saying tuesday is the new wednesday before thanksgiving. whatever you make of that.

apparently today is going to be very heavy. let's take a live look right now at the traffic on 270. yeah, pretty heavy out here now pointed in the northbound direction. we already saw really heavy traffic around the area today. take a look at the video of the inner loop of the beltway. congestion, accidents already making for a tough road for some. if you're leaving on the roads, aaa says well over 1 million people will be doing that with you. in fact, 90% of all travelers this thanksgiving in our area will be driving. to put that in perspective, 1 million people is like the entire population of fairfax county all leaving at once. so it's sure to be busy out here. let's take another live look at 270 as the traffic makes its way. tonight, important for everybody just to remember to take a deep breath. you are going to get where you need to go, and remember, there should be a nice meal waiting for you on the other end of the trip. guys, we're going to monitor the commute for you all night

can you expect? veronica is going to take a closer look at that if you're going to be on the roads or flying out of town, she has that coming up in about ten minutes. this is chris gordon in baltimore at the final hearing before the trial of baltimore officer william porter begins on monday. he is one of six baltimore police officers who will stand trial separately. today, the judge issued a ruling allowing the jurors to see the video of freddie gray being escorted to the police van in which he allegedly suffered his fatal injuries. all new at 5:00, we will talk to some residents here in baltimore and ask them if they believe that they could serve as fair and impartial jurors if they were selected in this trial. back to you. >> all right, thanks, chris. today we're learning more about the woman who doi died in a fire in fairfax county.

her na investigators say she was alone in her home in chantilly using a heating pad to stay warm. early saturday morning the pad caught fire and burned through the family room. as it gets co s colder more pe will be using space heaters, firefighters reminds everyone to be careful. a couple is missing if prince george's county and their families desperately need help finding them. 72-year-old rosa lee thomas and 76-year-old james everett ward were last seen driving a burgundy jeep liberty on sheriff road. thomas may need medication. in prince george's county chopper 4 shot video of a deadly accident in beltsville. a man ran over a man this morning on powder hill road. the car did stay there after the crash. police have re-opened the road. no word yet who it was. in light of this week's worldwide travel alert and increased kr ed terror threat i washington, should more people

be allowed to carry guns in the district? mayor bowser says absolutely not. the question comes after comments made by police chief cathy lanier about terrorists and how people should act if they come face to face with one of them. lanier said people should, quote, take a gunman out if they think they can before the police arrive. the mayor said that's no reason to put more guns on the street. >> i don't support increasing the numbers of gun illegal or otherwise in the ticket of columbia. i think that the chief described a very limited situation that could occur in the district and that's an active shooter situation. and i think she was referring to what all police departments are doing, making sure that people have a plan. >> the district has only issued about 50 permits since a judge's order struck down the city's prohibition in 2014. shots were fired at a black lives matter rally and several people were hurt and now suspects have been arrested. plus, a major city now

shore to the mountains and even national weather coming up in a few. >> all right, thanks, veronica. one of the three men accused of shooting protesters in minneapolis is now under arrest. the five victims are expected to survive. the shooting attack happened last night near a police precinct where black lives matter demonstrators and local activists have been camping out for more than a week. they are demanding answers following the death of jamar clark shot dead by a police officer during a scuffle early last week. his family is calling on the protest to end. a big development in another high-profile shooting. the chicago officer who shot a black teenager 16 times has been charged with first-degree murder. a judge denied bond for officer jason van dike and ordered the city to release video of the shooting by tomorrow. last year officer van dike shot a 17-year-old named laqaun mcdonald and was captured on his dashcam. city officials have been trying to keep the video from going public because they're afraid it will start protests in chicago.

trump is doubling down on his controversial 9/11 claim, how he's defending his comments about seeing muslim americans cheering of the terror attacks. and fast cash for the holidays. inside the world of secret shoppers. is it legit? one woman says it is and she's raking in the dough. 11 days after the worst attack in france since world war ii, french president francois hollande arrived in washington today for a high-level meeting a meeting with high stakes. he's looking for help in the fight against isis. steve handelsman is live at the white house. steve, tell us what did the president say today? >> reporter: well, pat, all this is overlaid by this apparently accidental shoot-down, meaning the turks shot down a russian warplane, they did it on purpose, the whole thing constitutes in the view of this white house an accident. president obama said if the russians focus more on is swis, accidents like that wouldn't happen, fewer mistakes. now this anti-isis effort is in

trouble, an effort the french president came here to try to strengthen. leaving france on high alert, president francois hollande joined president obama to vow a better coordinated war against isis. >> it must be destroyed and we must do it together. >> translator: we need a joint response. >> reporter: hollande goes to moscow this week but his plan to get russia into the coalition may have been shot down in syria. with the russian warplane today. the turks. u.s. allies say the jet was attacking pro-western rebels and flew into turkish airspace and fired on after ten warnings. the two russian pilots bailed out. rebels claim they killed one. russian president vladimir putin called the shoot-down a stab in the back. mr. obama begged the russians and the turks to talk. >> and take measures to discourage any kind of escalation. >> reporter: as the french step up their air war against isis along with the u.s., the russians could retaliate by

like a narrative, something i could describe because basically you're the eyes and ears of that busine businessowner that's not there. >> reporter: if this sounds like a job for you, she warns keep your eyes and ears alert because there are plenty of fraudulent secret shopper jobs out there. >> i was so happy, get into this business and being secret shopper. >> reporter: she thought she hit the jackpot when she was finally offered a secret shopper job through e-mail. >> they said you're going to get $1,900. then i'm going to get -- >> reporter: when the check arrived in the mail -- >> i got a bad feeling about it. >> reporter: the instructions said part of her job meant wiring money to a third party. that's when she double checked with her bank and got the bad news. it was a scam. >> i wanted it to be real. >> reporter: legitimate secret shopper jobs are are posted online by reputable merchandising companies. some authentic companies ask secret shoppers to pay for their gas on assignments.

prosecutors are looking for what they're calling extra prison time for a man arrested in the murder of a pastor's pregnant wife. if convicted prosecutors want larry taylor to face up to an additional 20 years in prison because of vanessa blackburn was 12 weeks pregnant when killed. taylor broke into her home earlier this month and shot blackburn in the back of the head. a judge entered not guilty pleas for both men today. also members of a helicopter flight crew are confirmed dead

after a crash at ft. hood army base in texas. the crew was on a training flight when the chopper went down before 6:00 last night. the soldiers haven't been identified yet but they were part of the division west first army. cause of that crash is under investigation. well, with the threats from isis still out there, state department has issued a worldwide travel alert. we'll show you what that means for local airports. donald trump raising more eyebrows by doubling down on his

right now, we're waiting to see how russia responds after turkey shot down one of its fighter jets. turkey says the jet crossed into its airspace, and officials warn the russian pilots multi. times before firing. vladimir putin is calling it, a quote, stab in the back. new video shows american warplanes destroying nearly 300 isis oil tanker trucks in a strike on monday. the planes first topped leaflets telling the drivers to run then they launched two dozen bombs and sprayed the trucks with machine gun and cannon fire. trucks were gathered at a fuel collection point on the syria/iraq border. back here at home it has been a busy afternoon at reagan national airport as people head out of town for thanksgiving. the state department issuing a worldwide travel warning, getting away for the holidays

new poll numbers in the republican presidential race. donald trump is back on top. there's now another candidate in second place. nbc's senior political editor mark murray with more insight. let's first take a look at a brand new quinnipiac poll. it shows trump with 25%. ted cruz at 23%. ben carson falling to third with 18% among republican likely republican iowa caucusgoers. followed eed by marco rubio at . rand paul at 5%. jeb bush with 4%. a big jump for cruz, mark, and big drop for carson. >> those are the two big headlines. important to note what the context was this for poll. coming after the paris attacks. we've seen donald trump leading in almost every republican poll since the paris terrorist attack. what we noticed is ted cruz now ends up having a 13-point jump in this quinnipiac poll, clearly in second place, between he and donald trump. ben carson, ten points down since october. and so really donald trump's

numbers going up, ted cruz going up, ben carson going down. >> trump raised eyebrows again with comments made over the weekend this time about 9/11. let's take a listen. >> i saw people getting together and, in fairly large numbers, celebrating as the world trade center was coming down. i saw them on television and i read about it on the internet. >> comments about 9/11. nothing he says seems to move his numbers. will that? >> well, you know, he has said a lot of things have been factually challenged through this entire presidential campaign. as you mentioned it hasn't hurt his numbers. i will point out, though, next news, we ended up looking through all of our archives arounded 9/11, found no such thing, no evidence to support that claim. donald trump keeps trucking away. it's important to note we still have two months to go and donald trump has done a great job of being able to latch on, still be in the news whether it's controversial comments or other news he's been making but the

something off the ground and charged at them. they shot and wounded him. he's been charged with assaulting an officer. the last thing you want to do on thanksgiving is make your guests sick. consumer reports shares some tips to make your job simpler and safer. you know, 80% of turkeys cooked at thanksgiving are bought frozen. so here's your first don't. don't leave your turkey on the counter to thaw out. do allow enough time for it to defrost in the refrigerator. don't wash your turkey after it thaws. you're likely to spread bacteria across the koubcountertops, you hands, and the sink where you're going to be prepping other food. don't put stuffing inside the turkey. you want to cook that separately. contamination is not worth the extra moisture. don't rely on popup thermometers. a turkey is cooked through and safe when it reaches 165 degrees. do consider an instant read digital thermometer.

tomorrow. another nice day. into the 50s. yes, we're talking about sunshine. we start the day tomorrow, though, back in the 20s in many locations. leesburg, look at that, up around areas like frederick, maryland, 31. 31 around fredericksburg. upper 30s i think east of i-95 for tomorrow. so it's going to be cold. you'll still need the coat starting out. by the afternoon we are going to warm and it's going it be a gorgeous day. in fact, here's the next change for us. remember today that change came after 1:00 when we got above 50 degrees and kept rising. now the next change after 1:00 tomorrow, we're above 60. a gorgeous day. a few high clouds. by tomorrow, late afternoon, i think we're still around 54, 55 degrees but just some high clouds will be moving in. thanksgiving day, the day after, we're stuck with sunshine. 57 to 62. it's going to be a good day. a good day to even get out and enjoy yourself. as we get into early friday morning, you know, typically this is the time of year when we bottom out in the 20s and 30s during the overnight. now early friday, sunshine.

the gunman video is now in jail. he confessed to shooting a good samaritan. >> the mayor called it domestic terrorism. he's accused of shooting a tulane medical student, when he tried to help a woman being dragged down the street. the suspect fired a second and third time. the gun jammed. that spared the victim's life. the charges could include attempted murder, kidnapping and robbery. >> those of us that are are hardened from seeing a lot of this stuff. >> because it looked like -- >> he was going to kill him. there's no question. the guy that did this is a
