overnight after demonstrations in the streets after release of a dash cam video was released. the teen was shot 16 times by a chicago police officer. protests were largely peaceful and there is no damage to private property. the protesters expected to stage more demonstrations today and in the days ahead. >> thanks. > > we're learning new information from minneapolis this morning after a black man who died in police custody is being laid to rest. jamar clark was shot. his funeral is happening right now. you're looking at more than 100 demonstrates who rallied outside a police precinct last night. i'm kristin wright live in

northern virginia where i-95 is moving nicely in both directions near the dale city rest stop. a few minutes ago, though, it wasn't. you'll get that right now because 47 million people in the u.s. are traveling for thanksgiving and most of them are driving. aaa says 42 million people are taking road trips for thanksgiving. that is more than last year. we have been driving 95 this morning. we did hit a couple slow spots. one near route 123 in prince william county. barely moving there. other stretches, though, of 95 in northern virginia doing great and moving along. that's certainly putting people at the rest stop here in dale city along the interstate in very good moods. they're on their way and really have had no problems driving through the d.c. metro area. >> the traffic was basically zero. i was surprised. you know?

hour. he is currently meeting with his national security team. they're discussing homeland security in the wake of the attacks in paris. that is scheduled to start at 11:40. we'll bring it to you live when it happens. >> i'm melissa mollet. a man just sentenced for attempted murder in montgomery county. 70 years. that's the sentence we learned for rupert stamps. he will spend 70 years in jail. he was found guilty of attempted murder and armed robbery for his part in two armed robberies last year at a cleaners in gaithersburg. two employees were shot. stamps' nephew also facing charges. chris gordon just called with that breaking information. one person is dead after an early morning crash in loudoun county. a ford f150 pickup truck crossed

the center line and into the path of a tractor trailer. that crash shut down 15 until before 7:00 this morning. the driver inside the pickup died. the driver of the tractor trailer survived the crash. the cause remains under investigation. now to new information after the terror in paris. the brother of one of the suspects is urging him to turn

jeans. >> right now police in prince george's county are looking for a brother and sister who are missing. rosa thomas and james ward are both in their 70s. they were last seen on monday afternoon in landover. police say they were last seen in a burgundy jeep. a jeep liberty with maryland tags. thomas may be without medication, if you have information, police would like to hear from you. 19 people in seven states including virginia are sick with an e. coli infection linked to cost costores. the sources ate rotisserie chicken salad from those stores. if yyou purchased that, don't et it. >> it's a thanksgiving tradition that's been feeding families for years. and what kind of weather you can expect for thanksgiving and beyond.

ste stedmon bailey was shot in the head overnight. police in miami have been searching for a light colored car, possibly a buick in connection with the shooting. they say bailey was in the car with four other people including two children. another car drove up and the people inside started shooting. in addition to bailey, another man was shot and rushed to the hospital with the life threatening injuries. a baby boy will be okay after someone left him at a nativity scene in new york city. a custodian said he heard the boy crying and found him monday afternoon. he says the boy was only a few hours old. his umbilical cord was attached. families are calling in offering to take care of the child. >> it means people care. they are willing to come in and help and give this new life a future. >> right now new york city police are looking for the baby's mother. church-goers say surveillance

cameras caught a woman on monday coming in with the baby and leaving without the boy. protests in moscow after the downing of a ruian fighter jet. today protesters threw eggs and stones and broke a few windows at the turkish embassy. this after turkey shot the plane down on tuesday. one pilot died. russian forces got the other one to safety ain a rescue operatio. turkey said the plane ignored warnings that it crossed into the country's airspace. search team also get more help looking for that missing malaysian plane. a third ship will join the deep sea search for mh370. 239 people on board when it disappeared from kuala lumpur to beijing last summer. the new third ship is equipped with a camera that's inside and an underwater drone attached to it it will reach the remote search area sometime next week. bright sunshine, still chill

let's talk about main routes and then alternates. tons of people will be taking 95 north and southbound here this weekend for thanksgiving holiday. just consider route 1. consider bw parkway. check the phone, check the apps, see what is your best bet for when you are leaving whenever you end up leaving here around the holiday. looking at 66. lots of people headed probably westbound there on 66 this weekend. always consider 50. consider the dulles toll road, and there's a jam near the beltway. talking about 95 in virginia. on thursday, for thanksgiving, 95 express lane also remain northbound all day long. friday the express lanes will be southbound. that normal reversal starting at 11:00 a.m. this corridor ends up being a mess. you can try route 1, may take you longer but you may not be

room. maureen meade was placed on administrative leave last month. she was charged after students found a phone in the locker room. it showed athletes changing clothes. developing in baltimore, police say a student remains in critical condition after a stabbing inside a high school. that stabbing happened at renaissance academy yesterday and the suspect is in custody. the baltimore sun reporting that a student at the same school was taken into custody last week after bringing a loaded gun into the building. kitchen fires are a big problem on thanksgiving day. there are about 1,300 kitchen fires every year on thanksgiving day. that's compared to about 400 on a÷.] normal day. safety experts say avoid wearing loose clothing and long sleeves near stovetops and ovens.

saturday, cooler into next week. a reason to be thankful this midday. this snow is far, far away from us across the country in california. it's causing a lot of accidents in northern california. some drivers told nbc it took them more than three hours to go 15 miles. the combination of freezing rain and wet snow made driving particularly dangerous. shocking video of a car driving into and right through a restaurant here. that car plowed into this pizza joint in california. this was last night. if you look closer, you can see it hit a man, someone else and it drove them several feet in there, not to mention the tables and chairs. the car severely damaged. police said amazingly nobody was seriously hurt. they also did not arrest the driver. the big day almost here. first millions of people are hitting the roads, rails and skies on the big travel day of the year. why security is such a big

they were mostly peaceful. we'll be watching for the others that are planned for today. and a funeral for a black man who died in police custody is happening now. jimarr clark was shot and killed a week and a half ago. protests have been going on since then. clark was handcuffed say witnesses at the time he was killed. it's not only chicago and minneapolis but the use of police force is under more scrutiny than ever all over the country. we wanted to give an idea of how police are used in the train of force tactics. it's a discovered complex series of judgment calls and they have to happen quickly. we reached out to a couple different agencies. prince george's county police invited me into the police academy. they showed how officers are trained to get a situation or person under control. it's a training scenario every officer goes through every year, making the call on drawing a gun and firing at a suspect in prince george's county officers are taught to consider several other steps before a bullet

leaves the chamber. >> they have to have a clear understanding. there's a lot riding on it. >> reporter: sergeant bill gleason runs the specializes training unit. he said training starts with dozens of hours in the classroom, ethics, constitutional law, and videos of what's right and what's not. in the field officers professional presence is usually enough to defuse a situation. >> walk away. domestic assault. turn around, place your hands behind your back. >> we teach using verbal techniques as we do using physical techniques. >> that can include what most of us consider yelling, short and firm commands. >> cross your ankles. >> you don't obey those veshrba commands, now i can put my hands on you, sir, back away. >> that's where things can get

more complex. officers are trained to meet resistance with the appropriate level of force considering all the factors in any one encounter to get control. that could mean a strike with a hand or baton, control hold or a takedown like this. >> pepper spray falls under active resistance. now you start flailing, pushing, the officer will back away, create distance, give a verbal warning, i'm about to spray you, get on the ground. >> gleason says officers are constantly and quickly assessing an encounter and finding the appropriate responseg?my which be a taser. >> most of the taser deployments are people who are physically assaulted towards the officer or another person. that's justification for use of the taser. >> in this simulator, officers are given all the necessary gear and tested.

we know he met with his national security team this morning as he has been doing for the last several weeks, in particular since the attacks in paris. so we anticipate this morning he will come out and give us all of us an update on some of the goings on in those meetings, and also talk to us about what posture security teams, homeland security teams have been in as we anticipate the thanksgiving holiday here. we have been telling you al morning about some of the holiday travel that is well underway around the region. we've seen pictures of airports across the country that are full and busy. tom has been telling us about the fact that it seems air travel is normal at this point in the holiday rush, if3/ñk you will. but still we expect the president to come out and talk about some things we'll be seeing if we're traveling on the roads, moving through airports, at amtrak stations and a lot of things we won't see as law enforcement and some covert operations are very much in play

new york city. a brand-new video that came out this morning that didn't necessarily try to articulate any particular threat on any place in the country. it did mention american leadership, according to this propaganda video, lack of leadership. the president is stepping out today to talk about what leaders have put in place to deal with potential threats. it's worth pointing out there have been no credible threats. in the united states as we go to the thanksgiving holiday. >> we've been telling people to add time, especially if they're traveling by air because security will be tight at the airports all around the country. they're saying you should arrive at airports at least two hours ahead of your scheduled flight to allow for that security check. we're waiting for the president. we expect him to come and step in front of the cameras any minute now to talk about national secur

>> today you've been monitoring what's happening overseas, reporting on a russian plane shot down yesterday by the turkish. that's something the president is learning about today as well. >> i think the president knew a great deal about what happened with the turkish plane and the russian plane yesterday, as well. but i think he chose his words cautiously because this is so incredibly sensitive. this was the first time in decades that a nato country shot down a russian plane. so you saw the president sort of not wanting to go there. not wanting to blame turkey, not wanting to blame russia, just calling on all sides for calm. but i think the real concern right now that the american people want to hear about is what pete was just talking about. there's a sense, at least that isis feels, that it has momentum.
