newsroom. the man is carrying what looks to be on a a binder. he raises his hand in triumph and secret service agents all over him. >> they think he left his vehicle in hanes point and walked to the white house. >> our team coverage begins with derek ward live in the north lawn. >> derek? >> good evening. they have identified that fence jumper. his name is joseph caputo. we don't have an address for him, an age and certainly, we don't know why he jumped the fence, but indeed he did earlier this afternoon and i had this intense moment. >> an otherwise uneventful thanksgiving day in d.c., this type of incident that happened all too often happened again at the white house. >> this man came to see the sights when the jumper started winding his way through the crowd. >> climbing. he was climbing like crazy and

then he was all, like, woo! >> the unidentified man was arrested before he made it to the executive mansion and police immediately cleared lafayette park across the street. incidents like this brought in high-profile security and it was a different feel. in georgetown, fewer people than usual and there is a police presence near the four seasons hotel. they were responding to a tradition and free food for first responders and other public servants who aren't working today. >> some of them ordered the food and they come and pick it up 50 at a time and we just have the s.w.a.t. team here. >> another tradition for some, visiting the smithsonian museum. they were open today and while terrorism was on people's minds that didn't keep them away. >> we didn't want it to stop us and while the sentiment isn't unanimo unanimous, and we had family in town last week and they opted

not to come. though most people we spoke to are confident with the message from the mayor. >> we have heightened vigilance and we follow the precedent and the secretary of homeland security who told people to be city smart. >> washington feels very safe. >> it doesn't mean you let your guard down because there's always the unexpected. >> i'm glad they did. again, joseph caputo has been taken into police custody. we don't know why he did it. lafayette park was cleared and they cleared it immediately after the incident and they put this crime scene tape up and we don't know what unfolded and hopefully in the ensuing days and it will make a court appearance and whether the president and the first family were in the white house when this happened. we're live just off lafayette square. back to you, chris.

>> i'm sure we'll learn more about him in the coming hours and our team coverage continues with meagan fitzgerald and they found what they think is the suspect's car. what are you hearing? >> reporter: you know, chris, law enforcement officials are confirming to us tonights that that ford taurus was found in the corner sparking space. behind me here is that of the white house fence jumper joseph caputo. that car had connecticut license plates with -- on it. secret service officials were out here at around 3:30 this afternoon and they were investigating that vehicle. they were taking pictures. they openeded up the doors. they went in and outside of the car. they even popped the trunk and looked throughout the trunk, as well. it was around 4:30 when that taurus was loaded on to a flatbed and towed away. to give you some context, we're about three and a half miles away from the white house. it's still unclear as to how caputo got there, but eric, that is part of what officers are investigating right now. >> meagan fitzgerald, thank you

very much. this is the first time somebody managed to make it over the fence since federal crews started making security upgrades to the white house perimeter over the summer. new spikes atop the fence went up in july. the national park service is still in the process of enhancing other security points around the white house. overseas, the alert level in brussels has been lowered by a notch. the prime minister says there's no longer an imminent threat to belgium and it didn't explain how and why that changed. belgian police are searching for suspects linked to the attacks in paris and the new alert level still means the attacks are possible and likely envelopes containinga i white powder triggered an anthrax alert and that turned out to be nothing more than flour. tonight a maryland family is thankful to learn two missing siblings in their 70s are safe. someone found james everett ward and his sister rosalie thomas

sleeping in their jeep 200 miles away from their home in landover. they disappeared monday afternoon and police were worried about them without medication. they still don't know why they drove that far, but they are fine and in good health. >> we are following developments in the chicago police shooting including threats to shut down the city's shopping districts tomorrow. protesters are planning a huge rally and they're outraged after seeing video police shooting a black teenager 16 times. president obama says he's deeply disturbed by that video, as well, which shows the moments leading up to laquan mcdonald's death. a warning some of you may find this video disturbing, but we want to take you to tina orlando in chicago. >> dash cam video showing 17-year-old laquan mcdonald shot by police 16 times as he walked down the street with a knife in his hand. the officer who pulled the trigger, 37-year-old jason van dyke. he's charged with first-degree

murder. in newly released dash cam video we are seeing the first time some of what officer van dyke saw that night in 2013. it showed mcdonald running in front of the vehicle just 30 seconds before the fatal shooting. the officers pursued him until the shooting happened at 9:57 p.m. and just to the right of the vehicle and out of the frame. >> we then see more officers arriving on the scene and their hustle slow because shot his been fired. another police vehicle arrives and the dash cam video showing the lifeless body of laquan mcdonald in the streets. this is dash cam video from another police vehicle. it was the first vehicle to respond to the call, but the dash cam doesn't start rolling until almost five minutes after the shooting takes place. >> officer jason van dyke's lawyer says he feared for his life and the shooting was justified because he felt threatened. >> as the holiday rush begins,

fairfax county police are going after people who are trying to commit credit card fraud. search warrants we pulled show police at fair oaks mall arrested potter and donovan web, the pair from new york are accused of trying to buy several items from a macy's store. the scheme included thousands of dollars of high-end purchases from various shopping malls including tyson's. our holiday team coverage continues. mark segraves was at today's turkey bowl and doug kammerer, and the forecast is looking pretty good for everybody headed out shopping. >> not bad at all and one of the warmest thanksgivings we've seen in quite some time. high temperature in d.c. at the airport and 64 degrees today and a lot of people over the 60-degree mark and 65, fredericksburg and 56 a little cooler over toward annapolis and what about your overnight forecast and if you're going to be hitting some of the shopping areas and 53 degrees around 7:00

wilkins. that's the man there. they're calling him a suspect. >> we have new details on an e. coli outbreak that's gotten 20 people sick. costco says the latest fda test results showed the source of that bacteria appears to be a tainted vegetable mix in the rotisserie chicken salad sold at the stores. costco took the chicken salad off the shelves about a week ago, but if you've got it in your refrigerator, you want to pitch that. the food and drug administration a prpproved a ne flu vaccine. their systems don't react well and puts them at severe complications. fluadshould be, available next year. it contains a booster that stimulates the system so the vaccine itself is more effective. >> tens of thousands of catholic states drove, riding in the popemobile in kenya, the pontiff blessed the crowd as he arrived

and now your storm team 4 forecast. >> just a beautiful thanksgiving across our area. take a look. this is the bethesda turkey chase. the 10k run kicked off at 8:30 this morning and the weather could not have been better for this race and just really just all day long and abundant sunshine and they got to low to mid-60s across the area and it was spectacular out there. look at all of the people out running this morning and trying to work off everything that we ate during the afternoon today. let's take a look and show you what's happening out there. 54 degrees and winds out of the southeast at 3 miles an hour and it is just spectacular and here it is the end of november and

temperatures are still in the 50s as the sun has gone down and 51 in fredericksburg. 53 over toward annapolis. no rain to talk about and once again we continue to be on the dry side for sure. very dry conditions. that's going to continue, too. take a look at the sat right and radar. you can see the clouds trying to work in, but they can't get in past the mountains. we are dry from boston all of the way down the coast here. the exception back toward the middle part of the country and we talked about this earlier in the week and around chicago, kansas city and got toward dallas and currently seeing snow and they picked up a couple of inches and not a big storm out there and if you have travel plans this is the area to watch out for and let's take a look at this and future weather, i want to show you what's happening here and watch out for some areas of fog. we could see some fog early tomorrow morning in some areas and then the sun comes out and then it gets really warm. really warm for this time of year and the average temperature, we're going to be 10 to 15 degrees above average and we stay on the warm side,

and this is saturday now and notice the cloud cover, saturday at 1:00 and still on the warm side and then we start to get into a chance for shower activity late saturday into sunday. if you're driving on sunday, i-95 up toward philly and maybe 68 or 64 out to the west and you may run into shower activity, but that's all it is, let's show you the wider view and temperatures in the 50s in the area on sunday, but the wider view does show the problem areas, and denver cold and we could see temperatures around 20 degrees and it could be some flight delays around the dallas area, and most of the country still not having too many problems, not nearly as good though as it was yesterday. >> high temperatures, look at these temps and 68 in d.c., and 65 in leesburg, and a beautiful, beautiful afternoon on your friday. if you're getting out to do some shopping, looking good. 65 on sunday and a chance for

to you. >> reporter: the chemotherapy does what we've come to expect, takes the hair for some time right to the immune system. >> sometimes you feel sick afterwards, but it's fighting off fin's cancer. ♪ this is my fight song >> it's a familiar war for 4-year-olds carla acosta. that's the fight song she's singing. >> i can go really high. i can almost touch a cloud. >> really, she loves just about anything that keeps her moving because brain cancer kept her in the hospital for months when she was a toddler. >> like, for my brain. it's, like, in your head. it's in your head. >> your brain, right? >> yeah. >> in simple words on her swing set, she explained to me why her brain required medicine. >> because -- because it needs help. >> she was otherwise perfectly healthy and one night her arm started twitching at bed time and within four days she'd had

brain surgery and then after that process of surgery she had 20 days to get healthy enough to start intensive chemotherapy. >> scarlet, can you say no more chemo? >> carla's mom recorded the day she finished her treatment. >> say hooray! >> yay! no more chemo! >> do you want to go for a walk? >> reporter: the celebrating continued for scarlet just last week, a clean scan more than two years in remission now. >> could we imagine having two healthy, healthy kids playing in the backyard like this? >> i think that's the hope that you have to hold on to every day. >> is that your -- >> in this season of gratitude, the two families tell me their thanks is for the children's national, nurses like emily schroeder. >> what kind of condition typically are the children and if they're here with you in this unit? >> if they're here with us it's

usually they're actively. over the course of exhausting 12-hour shifts mostly on her feet, emily's retrieving the life-saving medications, keeping her own fatigue hidden. >> i always try to go in with a smile. it is tough sometimes, but i always find the energy. >> they'll listen in to find that loving energy. >> are you ticklish? yes, you are, yes, you are. >> for many of us, we'll enjoy the holidays with family, emily will be making the rounds. >> seeing how happy they are with all of these different activities that we get to do makes up for it. >> it's a gratitude that runs in a circle. this nurse, grateful for her patience. >> it seems so far away in many ways. >> yeah, it does. >> do you remember spending thanksgiving at the hospital last year, finney? >> no.

the beautiful night out there, can't believe that we started out the week so cold and now we're in upper 60s and some areas close to 70 tomorrow and i keep looking and you may not like this, but i keep looking for a storm on the horizon and something to give me something to watch for, but there is nothing out there. right now across our area, temperatures quite nice. 54 degrees under clear skies and 53 right now at 7:00, 51 around 9:00 and cooler around 11:00 coming in around 49. it is 48 in gaithersburg, and a very nice evening and all across the region and if you're getting up early, and if you're doing some of the shopping starting off very mild for this time of year and average temperatures are in the upper 30s tomorrow and upper 40s at 6:00 a.m. and rather nice at noon and 68 degrees at 4:00, and i would not be surprised to see it out in fredericksburg.
